It’s an historically lucrative time to be in the horror business, and not just because the 11th installment of “Halloween” has made $128 million at the domestic box office on a reported $10 million budget.
Last year was the genre’s highest earning ever, as titles like New Line’s “It” and Jordan Peele’s groundbreaking “Get Out” raked in cash. Streaming series like Netflix’s “The Haunting of Hill House” and “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” have been showing impressive staying power on social media after the initial binge rush.
Naturally, the industry is seeking similar content across mediums to fill their pipelines — and an annual industry survey of the hottest unmade horror projects has just been released.
The Blood List surveyed 71 C-suite level executives in film and television for the “most-liked screenplays and pilots in the horror, thriller, sci-fi and dark-comedy genres,” according to Blood List creator Kailey Marsh, whose...

The Vampire Diaries, Season 5, Episode 13: “Total Eclipse of the Heart”
Written by Rebecca Sonnenshine and Holly Brix
Directed by Darren Genet
Airs Thursdays at 8pm (Et) on The CW
The completion of Katherine’s possession of Elena’s body and the return of Enzo both proved to be pivotal moments in last week’s episode of The Vampire Diaries. With Katherine fully ingrained into Mystic Falls, and Damon once again out hunting, the possibilities of fracture among the show’s core group was high. This week’s episode once again picks up on the aftermath of the two situations, in a suspenseful outing that brings both Tyler and Bonnie into the fold.
The potential of Tyler going up against Nadia is a promising one. As one of the last two remaining hybrids in the world, Tyler is in a unique position of power that he has yet to fully explore.

The Vampire Diaries Episode 513
“Total Eclipse of the Heart”
Written By: Rebecca Sonnenshine & Holly Brix
Directed By: Darren Genet
Original Airdate: 6 February 2014
In This Episode…
Stefan finds Aaron’s body in the trunk of Damon’s car, and Damon in the house, hungover and sleeping in a rock star mess. “So Elena breaks up with you and your first response is to go on a killing spree?” The answer is, obviously, yes. Stefan thinks that Enzo is a bad influence on his brother, so he attacks him while he is burying Aaron. After the tortures he endured at the hands of the Augustines, Enzo isn’t scared. Stefan wants him to leave town.
Damon and Enzo have one more on their kill list: Wes Maxfield. Trouble is, no one can find him. They capture the head of campus security, figuring that she has been colluding with Wes over the dead students.

The Vampire Diaries, Season 5, Episode 6: “Handle With Care”
Written by Caroline Dries and Holly Brix
Directed by Jeffrey Hunt
Airs Thursdays at 8pm (Et) on The CW
Turning Silas mortal at the end of last week, in true Vampire Diaries fashion, reconfigured the stakes once again. As he had gotten what he needed from Katherine, Silas’ fight with Qetsiyah over the purgatory for supernatural beings became the central conflict once again; this week’s episode turns the focus to the search for the anchor, in another strong entry into the season that fixes up a major issue.
One of the best aspects of the episode is the course correction it undergoes with regards to the female characters on the show. While the last few weeks have seen the women unfortunately be nothing more than puppets to the whims of the male characters, this week allows them to...

In This Episode...
Silas is now a witch and he is excited to die. He seems poised to keep his promise: he will bring Bonnie back before killing himself. Or as he kills himself - I don’t know how it works. But first he must find and destroy the anchor so that the supernatural purgatory falls. Naturally Tessa doesn’t want the anchor destroyed, and for the past 2000 years she has left it in the possession of the Travelers, who also don’t want Silas to be reunited with Amara. She won’t reveal why, but the Travelers keep the anchor moving and she doesn’t know where it is. Silas was able to get enough out of Tessa’s mind to know that the anchor is in a warehouse in New Jersey.

One upcoming comic book-movie adaptation that we haven't had any news of lately is an adaptation of the Top Cow title Magdalena. But thanks to MTV, we just got an update from the screenwriter herself.
The movie already has a cast, a writer, and a director. Magdalena chronicles the adventures of a direct descendant of Mary Magdalene named Patience, who protects the world against evil using a variety of supernatural powers. Writing the script is Holly Brix (The Butterfly Effect 3: Revelations) and set to direct is Japanese filmmaker Ryûhei Kitamura, who made his Us debut with The Midnight Meat Train. Set to star as Patience is Step Up actress Jenna Dewan, along with Luke Goss as her mentor, Kristof.
Even though Brix hasn't officially begun writing the script, here's her take on how the movie will go:
Obviously, I read all the comics and we talked about different versions of the story,...

There's an under-the-radar project we haven't written about yet called Magdalena. It's an adaptation of a Top Cow comic book that already has a cast, a writer, and a director. MTV just talked with the screenwriter, Holly Brix, who talked openly about what she's planning to do, even though she hasn't even officially started writing. Here's one of her better answers about choosing a story. "Obviously, I read all the comics and we talked about different...

It looks like Top Cow’s “Magdalena” is really moving along at a brisk pace, with its two leads already cast (Jenna Dewan and Luke Goss) and a director in Japanese wunderkind Ryuhei Kitamura onboard. So what’s next? Um, the script, for one. That’s the job of screenwriter Holly Brix, who recently talked to MTV about what she has plans for the movie, script-wise. Says Brix: It’s definitely a supernatural action movie, so I think ‘DaVinci Code’ is a good reference as far as all the Catholicism in it. But in addition to that story, it’s also a really straightforward action movie. There’s not a lot of secret codes to unlock and that sort of thing. She adds that while Dewan, who will play Patience in the movie, is the female lead, Goss’ Kristof, Patience’s trainer and mentor, will also have a big part,...

Last we heard from the "Magdalena" camp, the upcoming adaptation of the Top Cow property had landed "Midnight Meat Train" director Ryûhei Kitamura to helm the project, with "The Butterfly Effect 3: Revelations" writer Holly Brix penning the screenplay.
Chronicling the adventures of a direct descendant of Mary Magdalene who protects the world against evil using a variety of supernatural powers, "Magdalena" already has its stars in "Step Up" actress Jenna Dewan (playing the heroine, Patience) and "Hellboy II" actor Luke Goss (playing Patience's mentor, Kristof). Last year, we featured a week of video interviews with Dewan (we've embedded some of them in this post), and now we thought we'd check in with the new "Magdalena" writer to see where the project's at these days—and where she's planning to take it.
MTV: Where is the film at right now? Where are you in the process?
Holly Brix: Right now,...

ABC Family has greenlighted "The Cutting Edge: Fire & Ice," the fourth installment in the MGM-produced ice skating franchise that started with the 1992 feature "The Cutting Edge."
Following a direct-to-video sequel "The Cutting Edge: Going for Gold," the franchise moved to TV with ABC Family's 2008 movie "The Cutting Edge: Chasing a Dream" starring Francia Raisa as hockey player-turned-figure skater Alex Delgado.
In "Fire & Ice," Alex segues into teaching after her skating career comes to an abrupt halt when her partner on and off the ice is injured.
This time around, Raisa is joined by Brendan Fehr, who stars as James Van Behr, the smoldering bad boy of speedskating, who pairs up with Alex. The film chronicles the duo's grueling practice regimen and tempestuous relationship as they prepare for competition.
Stephen Herek ("Mr. Holland's Opus") is directing from a script by Holly Brix. Craig Roessler, Sara Berrisford and Hudson Hickman are exec producing.
