The celebrated Scottish director Kevin Macdonald is known for his magisterially mounted, adult-inclined works of fiction that are shaded in politics and personal hardships. His movies have leaned toward Oscar glory (Forest Whitaker won Best Actor for his terrifying turn in The Last King of Scotland), while other films have displayed his particular talent for singling out narrative greatness in true-life stories (Marley most recently, and Life in a Day and Touching The Void before it).
His latest film, How I Live Now, which was released last year, is being released on DVD on February 10th – and to celebrate that fact, he dedicated some of his precious time to give HeyUGuys the lowdown on why young actors are better than old ones, his fondness for pulling the rug from beneath the viewer, and what the future holds for him (submarines, apparently). Beware: minor spoilers ahead.

She’s Having a (Demonic) Baby: Netto’s Genre Combo Debut Unexpectedly Enjoyable
“Not every child is a blessing,” warns the tagline for Brian Netto’s film debut, Delivery. While meant to be eerie in relation to the subject here, everyone is more than likely aware of the bitter but truthful sentiment it really is, as Netto’s (familiar) exploration of the supposedly celestial joys of parenthood are delightfully skewered with this genre blend of found footage and pregnancy horror. In fact, it’s a seamless transition Netto uses, stapling the low brow film subgenre with low brow pop TV techniques to create a pulpy and sometimes fascinating creature as slickly and manipulatively edited as well as all the material it’s aping.
A happily married couple living in 2009 North Hollywood, Rachel and Kyle Massey (Laura Vail and Danny Barclay) have had some difficulties on the well-worn road of procreation,...

Autism Friendly Films aims to make cinema outings a stress-free experience for children with autism and their parents
Tommy and Daniel Copeman love movies – Harry Potter, Transformers, Indiana Jones – but trips to the cinema are rare. Like many people with autism, Tommy, 13, finds the darkness, flashing lights and noisy sound effects of the big screen frightening, often so much so that he has to leave a film halfway through.
Ten-year-old Daniel, who has Asperger's syndrome, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and also suffers from anxiety, enjoys the experience much more than his older brother, but finds it hard to keep still or quiet throughout the film. He likes to talk to the characters on the screen, and can be obsessively observant of small details. Watching Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull at the cinema, he swore he had spotted a spider crawling over the screen, and then wanted to tell everybody about it,...
