Live productions of the Tony Award-winning musical Memphis, will be filmed in the coming weeks, for a planned nationwide theatrical run in this spring.
Recall, last spring, I posted an entry announcing that the musical had drawn Hollywood’s interest – specifically, Justin Timberlake was said to be interested in adapting the musical to film, likely as a starring vehicle for himself; and director Oliver Stone, a big fan of the show, had been meeting and talking with David Bryan, one of the show’s creators and its composer, expressing his interest in making a film out of it.
But neither of those two potentials are connected to the theatrical distribution of live recordings, planned for this spring.
The musical stars Chad Kimball and Montego Glover (pictured bottom-right) as a young white rocker and black singer in love, in the 1950s segregated South.

Zac Efron and Justin Timberlake are reportedly both eying the same role in the possible film adaptation of the hit Tony-winning Broadway musical Memphis, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Both actors traveled to the Big Apple to check out the show — Zac Efron twice — and are reportedly interested in the lead role of ’50s-era radio Huey Calhoun, based on the real life of Memphis DJ Dewey Phillips. Oliver Stone has been spotted taking in the musical this past spring, and his rep confirmed that the director met with one of the show’s writers, keyboardist David Bryan, about doing a film adaptation, but nothing has surfaced past that. Meaning no studio, writers or development is happening yet.

In a pairing that will send tween slash fiction writers wild, Zac Efron and Justin Timberlake are said to be competing for the lead role in the film adaptation of Tony-winning Broadway musical "Memphis" reports The New York Post.
The pair have been spotted in the audience of the show and are reportedly interested in the lead role of '50s-era radio DJ Huey Calhoun.
The production, which won Best Musical at this year's Tony Awards, is based on the life of Memphis disc jockey Dewey Phillips, one of the first white DJs to play black music in the 1950s. Chad Kimball played Calhoun in the stage production.
Oliver Stone has been spotted in the audience as well and has met with show writer David Bryan about the film adaptation, but nothing official in any capacity has yet been set. If Stone gets it, Timberlake is reportedly the "JFK" director's top choice to star.

Zac Efron will possibly compete against Justin Timberlake for a lead role in the film adaptation of a Broadway play "Memphis". 22-year-old Zac is reportedly interested to star as a 1950s Memphis radio DJ Huey Calhoun, which was played on-stage by Chad Kimball, while "SexyBack" singer Justin is said to be mentioned as potential character to play the role.
Besides reporting that Zac hung out with the cast during the intermission when he made his second visit in the Tony-winning musical performance on Tuesday night, August 17, a witness further added to NY Post that the "Charlie St. Cloud" heartthrob has gushed over the female lead role Montego Glover. The onlooker said, "When Montego came over, Efron said, 'I just can't stay away from the show'."

Zac Efron is seemingly not ready to hang his dancing shoes for good. The actor who has been struggling to ditch his "High School Musical" image reportedly wants to play Huey Calhoun, a lead role in "Memphis", should the Broadway musical is adapted into a feature film.
The 22-year-old actor is said to have seen the show twice with his latest visit on Tuesday, August 17. While watching the performance, he was accompanied by girlfriend Vanessa Hudgens and Adam Shankman, a judge on "So You Think You Can Dance" and the producer of Efron's films "Hairspray" and "17 Again", New York Post reports.
But Efron is not the only one who wants to step in the shoes of Chad Kimball, who takes the lead role on the stage show. Justin Timberlake is allegedly also circling the role, though there is still no concrete plan to make the big screen version.

First off, we're not just talking about the city. This is a Broadway show created by David Bryan off the novel by Joe Dipierto. The story is set on a disc jockey Huey Calhoun, a caucasian who ends up being the first one to play african american music back in the 1950s. Yes, I wanted to be politically correct there. Anyways, you're probably wondering what's the big deal with "Memphis". It's a huge play, so what. Well, it just so happens that "Memphis" is getting the big screen treatment soon enough and two guys want the lead role for themselves. Zac Efron and Justin Timberlake are both licking their chops, wanting the part. The other real problem is the fact that nobody's announced that there actually is a big screen adaptation of "Memphis" going on. Then again, Tony award winning shows turned big screen feature isn't something that's completely alien to us.

Zac Efron and Justin Timberlake are seemingly vying for the lead role in a theatrical adaptation of the Broadway musical, Memphis.
While there has not yet been an official announcement about a film version, Oliver Stone sparked buzz about the project when he attended the musical earlier this year.
A rep for Stone has reportedly confirmed that he’s met with the show’s writers, Joe Dipietro and David Bryan, to talk about the possibility of an adaptation.
Memphis is loosely based on Memphis disc jockey Dewey Phillips, one of the first white DJs to play black music in the 1950s. Since it opened in 2009, the musical has attracted mainly positive reviews, and walked away with four Tony awards at the 2010 ceremony.
Efron, who has previous musical experience, would likely be the safest choice but, if rumours are true, Oliver has his sights firmly set on Timberlake.

What a pro. As Jon Bon Jovi was nearing the end of a 2 1/2 hour concert in his homeland New Jersey on Friday night, he injured his leg during a performance of the song "Glad All Over" from the Dave Clark Five. Despite his injury the world famous Jersey boy finished out the show with style, and a sense of humor. "My calf muscle just blew out! Whoa!" he told the crowd. "I got another leg. I don't need this one." Throughout the rest of his performance, he assured the audience that he was okay by flexing his foot and saying, "Don't you worry folks. I got nowhere to go. I'm old. What can I tell you? But I'm still good lookin'!" He finished the concert with an encore of "Livin' On A Prayer," then was assisted off of the stage by the bands keyboard player David Bryan. Jon Bon Jovi recently suffered a torn calf muscle on stage. The Bon Jovi frontman limped during a final set of the band's concert at New Jersey's New Meadowlands Stadium. The rocker, who often jumps up and down during his concerts, injured himself reportedly when singing "Glad All Over".

We've been fans of Broadway since the first time our dad brought home a cast recording of Walking Happy. We were hooked. We grew up on Fiddler on the Roof, Pippin, La Cage aux Folles, Oliver, Annie, Godspell, and the like.
So, while we still prefer a good-old fashioned musical, we're glad the New York stage and the Tony Awards have become more inclusive these days. It used to be Broadway was an exclusive club that only the Sondheim and Lloyd Weber inner circle could penetrate. But in recent years Hollywood stars have risen to prominence on the Great White Way and even rock and rollers have moved onto 42nd Street. And now, thanks to Glee, Broadway stars are TV household names.
While we still love the shows of yesterday, we're excited that by opening up the genre to more familiar faces, theater has gained new fans and bigger audiences.

Lurking away in the dark reaches of the internet is a Pdf file for what some believe is the next Alien movie, the prequel film that Ridley Scott is prepping for 20th Century Fox. But is the Alien Harvest screenplay legitimate or is it a piece of fan fiction? Six months after the script leaked online the question still remains unanswered, and with the latest bits of information that Scott himself said publically last night, the mystery has deepened still further.
Here are the known facts as best as I've been able to sort them out:
Sometime in early January 2010 the Alien Harvest Pdf file was uploaded to the Scribd file sharing website. The 122-page script is credited to Jon Spaights, the screenwriter hired to write the untitled Alien prequel that Ridley Scott was developing at Fox. "Memphis" won best musical at Sunday's Tony Awards and three of its seven other bids -- score (Joe Dipietro, David Bryan), book (Dipietro) and orchestrations (Daryl Waters, Bryan). This tuner about the segregated south of the 1950s was the only traditional book musical in the top race this year. The other three contenders -- "American Idiot," "Fela" and "Million Dollar Quartet" -- all used existing songs to tell their stories. Each of those shows won at least one award as did several of the musical revivals in a season that failed to produce a juggernaut like last year's "Billy Elliot," which danced off with 10 Tonys. "Fela" won choreography (Bill T. Jones), costume design (Marina...

If you watched the 2010 Tony Awards—and that’s a very big if, considering it was the night of the True Blood premiere and game 5 of the NBA finals—you probably saw a few strange things: Host Sean Hayes tonguing Kristin Chenoweth, Green Day playing a mini-concert, and Oscar winners Denzel Washington and Catherine Zeta-Jones making off with two of the four major acting awards. The night’s biggest winner was, uncharacteristically, a play: the Mark Rothko homage Red, which took home six awards including Best Play. Onstage husband and wife Denzel Washington and Viola Davis were big winners, claiming the night's Best Actor and Actress prizes for a Play for Fences, which was also named Best Revival. Scarlett Johansson was a first-time Tony Awards winner for her Broadway debut in A View From The Bridge and Catherine Zeta-Jones was named Best Actress in a Musical.
Green Day's American Idiot was a double winner.
There were also special awards for British playwright Alan Ayckbourn and actors Marian Seldes and David Hyde Pierce.
The show was a true celebration of all things musical and theatrical with highlights including a show-stopping performance by Glee stars Matthew Morrison and Lea Michele, a dramatic rendition of Send in the Clowns by Zeta-Jones and stunning segments from hit musicals Fela! and La Cage aux Folles.
Green Day helped give the big show a rocking start as they performed two songs from their American Idiot musical.
It was couple's night in the audience with Johansson joined by husband Ryan Reynolds, Michael Douglas supporting his wife Zeta-Jones and Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith and Antonio Banderas and Melanie Griffith turning out.
Even Jay-z, who had performed at the Bonnaroo festival in Tennessee on Saturday, and his wife Beyonce dressed it up for a night at the theatre awards.
Host Sean Hayes was perfect, cracking jokes at the expense of some of his movie star audience members and dressing up as both Annie and Spider-Man for added laughs.

Accepting the kudo, the 55-year-old actor shared, "My mother always said man gives you the award and God gives you the reward. I guess I got both tonight." Bon Jovi bandmate David Bryan picked up two Tonys in quick succession as he won both the orchestration award and the score race. He shared the first with Daryl Waters edging out among others grand slam champ Jonathan Tunick ("Promises, Promises"). His Tony bookend for score is shared with co-lyricist Joe Dipietro. The score category was missing several of the musical maestros behind this season's contenders for the top award. The Tony Awards require nominated scores to have at least 50% original material. That ruled out both "American Idiot" and "Fela!" Dipietro got his own matching Tony when he won the book prize. In his wry acceptance speech, he mentioned the New York Times which...

"Memphis" won for best musical at the 2010 Tony Awards, but was shut out in the acting categories. The show, which tells the story of a collaboration between a white disc jockey and a black singer in the segregated South of the 1950s, also won for best book, best original score, and best orchestrations. Memphis came into the Tonys having bested the competition in the Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle awards, and was considered by many to be a favorite. Also favored to win was "Red," which was named best play. The play about the painter Mark Rothko led all productions with six awards—including best featured actor, which went to Eddie Redmayne, best direction, scenic design, lighting design, sound design. The winning color was "Red" and the place to be was "Memphis" on Sunday during the 64th annual Tony Awards.
John Logan's two-character biodrama "Red," about American abstract expressionist Mark Rothko, took home the night's largest haul, winning six awards, including top-play honors. It also won for Michael Grandage's direction and for featured actor Eddie Redmayne as the artist's assistant and verbal punching bag.
The production originated at London's Donmar Warehouse, marking the fourth time in five years that the top-play prize has gone to a transatlantic import.
Accepting that award, lead producer Arielle Tepper Madover said, "It is our duty as actors, directors, designers and fellow producers to do just what Rothko did, to inspire, engage and foster new artists to fall in love with our craft and make it their own."

Here’s the easiest prediction to make about this year’s Tony Awards, which will be presented June 13 at NYC’s Radio City Music Hall: Host Sean Hayes will almost certainly make some reference to the hullabaloo about being too gay to play a straight man in the musical Promises, Promises. The CBS broadcast will also have an excuse to present a production number from his show even though it didn’t snag a nomination for Best Revival of a Musical. (There’s talk that the show will open with a medley of “pop songs you might not know are on Broadway.

Though the economy was still in dire straits, Broadway carried on during the 2009-10 season, with visits from such high-voltage marquee names as Hugh Jackman, Daniel Craig, Christopher Walken, Denzel Washington, Jude Law, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Liev Schreiber, and Scarlett Johansson. A little group called Green Day rocked Broadway's world with the stage adaptation of the band's hit album "American Idiot," Twyla Tharp paid tribute to Frank Sinatra in "Come Fly Away," and Elvis, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Carl Perkins formed a "Million Dollar Quartet." "Fela!," Bill T. Jones' combination dance party, concert, and musical biography, transferred to the Main Stem from its Off-Broadway run, as did Geoffrey Nauffts' tender and moving play "Next Fall." "Red" and "Time Stands Still" offered searing portraits of artists coping with crises, while Sarah Ruhl's "In the Next Room or the vibrator play" captured the repressive Victorian era. Broadway fare also...

I’ve seen a handful of plays and musicals on Broadway in recent months – including Race, Fela! and Fences – but the Tony Award-nominated Memphis is one that I haven’t seen; although, given what I now know about it, I might check it out.
First, there’s the story which, loosely based on Memphis disc jockey Dewey Phillips, takes place in the 1950s Memphis, Tennessee, and centers on a young white rocker named Huey Calhoun (Chad Kimball) who falls in love a black singer, played by Montego Glover (that’s her in the photo on the left, and below right), a Tony Award nominee for her performance in the Best Actress In A Musical category.
From the musical’s website: He’s a young, white radio DJ named Huey Calhoun, whose love of music transcends race lines and airwaves. She’s a black singer named Felicia Farrell, whose career is on the rise,...

Charlie Williams is a dynamic young dancer who’s making his Broadway debut in Memphis, the new multi-Tony-nominated musical by Joe Dipietro and David Bryan, and he sure knows how to put his best feet forward. Thanks to his fancy footwork, the Astaire Awards nominated him as part of the best male dance ensemble on the Great White Way.
What’s more, Williams boasts the picture-perfect looks of an Abercrombie & Fitch model, and has been named “Broadway Hottie of the Month” by Gaylifenyc.org. The 5-foot-9 charmer, who is refreshingly open and out as a bisexual man, also was crowned ''Mr. Broadway'' at ''The Broadway Beauty Pageant.'' Plus, he will be getting more exposure as the pinup poster boy for "Broadway Bares' Xx: Strip-opoly,'' Broadway Cares' annual burlesque show of sexy dancers on June 20 at the Roseland Ballroom.

Plus, he will be getting more exposure as the pinup poster boy for "Broadway Bares' Xx: Strip-opoly,'' Broadway Cares' annual burlesque show of sexy dancers on June 20 at the Roseland Ballroom.

Hollywoodnews.com: Justin Timberlake is interested in taking the Broadway musical “Memphis” to the big screen.
What exactly is “Memphis”?
For the non-New Yorkers “Memphis” is a musical by Joe Dipietro and Bon Jovi keyboardist David Bryan set against the early roots of rock and roll. “Memphis” follows the love affair and stories of a black Beale Street blues singer, Felicia, and a maverick white radio D.J., Huey Calhoun, who has an ear for the new sound.
“Memphis” opened on Broadway in October and was recently nominated for eight Tony Awards, including best musical. The show’s ingénue is Montego Glover who plays Felicia and is nominated for best leading actress in a musical. The L.A. Times thinks Glover has a good chance of trumping the category’s competition, particularly Catherine Zeta Jones who is up for “A Little Night Music” in the category.
