English librettist, translator, and dramatist. He studied at Eton and
Cambridge (where he founded the Amateur Dramatic Club) and set out to
become an attorney, but found his talents lay in writing farce,
pantomime, burlesque and extravaganza for the London stage. He was
knighted in 1902.
