That's the premise for an ambitious new Australian short film set in the period leading up to the Holt's famous disappearance at Victoria's Cheviot Beach.
The Defector is written, directed and produced by Scott Mannion and executive produced by Antonia Barnard, Nick Cole, Greg Dick and Simon de Bruyn, who describes the short as "an Australian spy film made to world class standards."

Mad Max: Fury Road has completed principal photography after a six-month shoot in Namibia and South Africa.
It is the fourth film in the Mad Max series, which originally made Mel Gibson a star, and will attempt to revive the apocalyptic franchise after almost 30 years. Fury Road follows Mad Max (Tom Hardy), who is caught up with a group of people fleeing across the Wasteland in a war rig driven by Imperator Furiosa (Charlize Theron), according to a report by South Africa.s National Film & Video Foundation.
The film has had a long gestation and hit several stumbling blocks on its way to production. It was officially revived in October 2009 when director George Miller announced that pre-production was underway in New South Wales before the location was unexpectedly shifted to Namibia.
The production also suffered budget overruns and schedule delays, according The Hollywood Reporter, prompting producer Denise di Novi to supervise on-set.

The Australian Cinematographers Society last month accredited four cinematographers to receive its prestigious Acs designation. The successful cinematographers were: Aron Leong (Qld), Dan Freene (Nsw), Robert Hill (Sa) and John Bean (Qld), who was awarded posthumously. They join 332 other cinematographers accredited by the Acs since 1963 and are now able to use the Acs designation after their names. Ten applications were made by cinematographers who wished to be accredited this year, the society said, but 80 per cent of the judging panel had to vote in favour of an applicant to qualify for the Acs designation. The judging panel, chaired by Ron Johanson Acs, was comprised of: David Burr Acs, Richard Malins Acs, Peter James Acs Asc, Tim McGahan Acs, Alan Cole Acs, Ted Rayment...

Encore visited the Geelong set of Simon Wincer’s new project The Cup which, although shot on a tight schedule, he hopes will be ‘the movie that stops a nation’ when it’s released in 2011.
The Cup tells the story of Damien Oliver (played by Stephen Curry), winner of the 2002 Melbourne Cup with the horse Media Puzzle and the support of Irish trainer Dermot Weld (Brendan Gleeson). Oliver’s brother (Daniel MacPherson) was killed one week before the event in a horse racing accident in Perth – which also reflects the way their father died 27 years ago.
Us journalist Eric O’Keefe heard of Oliver’s story and contacted Wincer, trying to get more information from his Australian friend to write a magazine article. Wincer looked into it and rang him back saying “This is a movie!”
Wincer is, of course, no stranger to horse-themed projects, from 1983’s Phar Lap to the 2008 CBS miniseries Comanche Moon.

Director Simon Wincer is about to start production of his new horseracing film The Cup, but he admits that the project has been particularly difficult to put together.
“I’m glad that we’re up and running, because it’s certainly tried my patience a number of times,” Wincer told Encore.

Wincer and Eric O’Keefe started working on this project in 2003, and it’s taken seven years to make it happen. The $17.5m film was financed in 2008, but fell apart due to the global financial crisis.
Win some, lose some. That’s what The Cup has experienced in its long journey.
Ray Winstone was attached to the project, to play Irish trainer Dermot Weld.
