An anthem written by Andrew Lloyd Webber is one of 12 new pieces of music commissioned by King Charles for his coronation.
Lloyd Webber said he was “incredibly honoured” to have been given the opportunity to compose a new number. “My anthem includes words slightly adapted from Psalm 98. I have scored it for the Westminster Abbey choir and organ, the ceremonial brass and orchestra.”
The maestro also said he hoped the anthem “reflects this joyous occasion” when the new king is crowned.
Lloyd Webber, 74, was among those who travelled to Buckingham Palace to pay respects to Queen Elizabeth II, after her death in September last year.
In a tribute posted to Twitter, he honoured the queen as “the most extraordinary ambassador” and thanked her for “all she has done”.
King Charles’s coronation is scheduled to be held on 6 May, and he has selected the musical programme for the ceremony at Westminster Abbey.

Andrew Lloyd Webber, the English composer who created the scores for blockbuster musicals such as “Cats,” “The Phantom of the Opera” and “Evita”, has written the anthem for King Charles III’s coronation, adapting a piece of church music that encourages singers to make a “joyful noise.”
The work by Webber is one of a dozen new pieces Charles commissioned for the grand occasion taking place May 6 at Westminster Abbey. It includes words adapted from Psalm 98 and is scored specifically for the abbey’s choir and organ.
“I hope my anthem reflects this joyful occasion,” Webber said in a statement distributed by Buckingham Palace.

Things get intense in the latest clip released by Netflix for their upcoming original series “Ozark.” The series follows the aftermath of financial advisor Marty Byrd’s fallout with a drug cartel that leaves him and his family in danger.

The dark drama stars Jason Bateman (“Horrible Bosses,” “Arrested Development,” “The Gift”) and Laura Linney (“The Truman Show,” “The Exorcism of Emily Rose,” “Primal Fear”) as Marty and Wendy Byrde, a couple who lives in the suburbs of Chicago. Their seemingly picturesque lives take a turn when Marty’s dealings with a drug cartel go awry and the family has to relocate to a summer resort community in the Missouri Ozarks.

Jim Jarmusch. Photo courtesy of the Lisbon Estoril Film Festival. This interview took place on an auspicious morning after the U.S. elections. The setting was placid: an oceanside terrace in the small casino town of Estoril, twenty minutes outside of Lisbon, where Jim Jarmusch was attending Paulo Branco’s Lisbon Estoril Film Festival. Despite the harrowing mood, the subject was focused and insightful, talking about his working method, collaborators, and the poetic influences and resonances for his latest film, Paterson, which opens in North America this week.Notebook: I wanted to start by talking about technical matters.Jim Jarmusch: Sure.Notebook: I’m curious…do you use a shot list?Jarmusch: No. Because, say, we go to the location, and it’s 4pm, and we’re shooting the next day at 9am… and now the light is coming from a different place, and maybe it rained overnight, and everything’s different.

It was another year full of great classical music. Here are my favorites from 2014, new releases only, no reissues.
1. Magnificat/Philip Cave The Tudors at Prayer (Linn) This superbly programmed and performed album contains eight Latin sacred choral works (specifically motets, mostly votive antiphons and psalm motets) by John Taverner (c.1490-1545), Thomas Tallis (c.1505-1585), William Mundy (c.1529-1591), Robert White (c.1538-1574), and William Byrd (c.1540-1621). Active during the period of greatest religious upheaval in English history, they kept writing richly layered polyphony despite changing fashions (though the later composers listed would also provide chordal English-language anthems as needed). The mightiest work here, Mundy's Vox Patris caelestis, leads off the program. The text, speaking as it does of "flowering vines" and their "heavenly ambrosial scent," practically begs for an elaborate polyphonic setting, and Mundy provided one that is among the most exquisite works of the 16th century.

It's been eight years since I wrote about my favorite classical Christmas music. So here's a look at some of the finer Christmas releases since then. As before, I try to spotlight some less familiar Christmas music while still including old favorites.
Monica Piccinini/Christina Kuhne/Ursula Eittinger/Alberto ter Doest/Thilo Dahlmann/Cologne Academy/Michael Alexander Willens Francesco Durante: Neapolitan Music for Christmas II (cpo)
I've got to get my hands on vol. I, because this is wonderful. Durante (1784-1755, an almost exact contemporary of J.S. Bach, was considered one of the greatest church composers in Naples at that time, and also taught such future famous opera composers as Pergolesi and Paisiello (Durante was himself a student, in Rome, of Pasquini).
Even Bach, always interested in the Italian masters, found Durante's work worthy of study. One of the tropes of Italian Christmas music was a pastoral mood celebrating the shepherds,...

Holiday travel is awful. You're lugging around a bulky coat. The lines at the airport are unbearable. And there's always someone insufferable on your plane (and, usually, sitting right next to you). But it doesn't have to be an express jet to hell. This year, WestJet pulled off the sweetest "miracle" for passengers, with a little help from Santa and his elves (er, their employees). Santa asked passengers what they wanted for Christmas - only to find their presents coming down the baggage shoot when they arrived at their destination. Plus: Another video that will make you weep, more that will make you laugh,...

It was playing Bach that brought Canadian pianist Glenn Gould worldwide fame when his recording of the Goldberg Variations – at the time, 1955, a rather esoteric corner of the repertoire – and certainly a hefty percentage of his albums over the course of his career were devoted to the German Baroque master's keyboard output. But in celebrating the 80th anniversary of his birth on September 25, 1932 (and looking forward with sadness to the 30th anniversary of his death of a stroke on October 4, 1982), it's worth remembering that he was interested in many more composers. I didn't have to make too much of a conscious effort to diversify this baker's-dozen list until I got down to the last two spots. (All the recommended recordings were issued by Columbia Records/CBS Masterworks/Sony Classical.)
J.S. Bach: Goldberg Variations, Bwv 988; Sweelinck: Fantasia in D major; Schoenberg: Piano Suite Op.

My usual explanation in this space: I am especially interested in piano and choral music, plus symphonies, so that’s what I get the most promos of. Other stuff obviously gets through my filters, but the percentages of what comes in inevitably affect what comes out, i.e. this list. That said, in terms of number of centuries spanned, rather than genres or formats or whatever, I think I'm covering as much or more musical territory than most critics. By the way, look for a shorter list of my favorite classical reissues of 2012, to follow in a day or two.
1. Tokyo String Quartet, Jon Manasse, Jon Nakamatsu Brahms: Piano Quintet, Clarinet Quintet (Harmonia Mundi) There were recordings this year that were more important in terms of bringing new repertoire to light, or featuring young artists, or bringing classical into the 21st century, or being more controversially newsworthy. Examples of all of those follow.

Opera star Joyce Didonato was a double winner at the 2010 Gramophone Awards in London on Friday, October 1, taking home the prestigious Artist of the Year title. The American mezzo-soprano beat the likes of Placido Domingo and Lang Lang in an online fan vote to scoop the top prize, while she also walked away with the award for best recital for her rendition of Rossini's "Colbran, the Muse".
Argentine cello player Sol Gabetta was named Young Artist of the Year, while Dutch star Andre Rieu was awarded the Specialist Classical Chart title. British group The Cardinall's Musick landed the Recording of the Year accolade for its take on William Byrd's "Infelix Ego", and celebrated Austrian pianist Alfred Brendel was honoured with the Lifetime Achievement award.
