Like elsewhere, football fever has gripped India too with a majority rooting for all-time favourites Brazil, while the remaining seem to be divided between holders France and Lionel Messi-led Argentina.
When there is so much enthusiasm for the sport in India, the big question is: Why can’t a country that has started producing Olympic champions qualify for the football World Cup?
Every time a World Cup takes place after four years, Indian fans have precisely one question — when will India play in the game’s showpiece event?
And the answer is always the same — given the standard of the game back home, India will never play in the World Cup.
Maybe Indian football can benefit if the truth that is hidden behind this brazen answer is brought out.
Indian football officials probably do not allow this truth to come out. Even those who are critical of the plight...

Demba Ba has rejected the chance to return to the Premier League and opted for a move to China, according to Sky Sports.
West Brom were willing to make Ba their highest paid player but it appears he will instead follow in the footsteps of Drogba and Anelka with a move to Shanghai.
The Ex-Chelsea and Newcastle striker was one of Tony Pulis’ top summer targets but will join Tim Cahill and Mali international Mohamed Sissoko at Shanghai Shenhua.
The deal was reportedly a record for the Chinese Super League and believed to be in the region of £11 million.
The Senegal international, who reportedly signed a three-year deal at the Chinese club, enjoyed past spells in England with West Ham, Newcastle and Chelsea before a move to Turkish giants Besiktas where he scored 27 goals in 44 appearances.

For quite some time, Everton’s reputation has been one of a selling club. While the bigger clubs around them were able to spend vast fortunes on recruitment, Everton were forced to sell before they could buy.
That often led to them selling off their prized assets for large fees and spending the money to fill out a squad that was desperately lacking in quality in certain areas. No deal highlights this more than Wayne Rooney’s transfer to Manchester United, while the club also did well out of deals for the likes of Mikel Arteta and Jack Rodwell.
During the David Moyes era at the club, he was often forced into spending very little money but trying to build a squad that was capable of competing towards the higher ends of the Premier League. It was arguably a job that the Scot did well, with...

Jose Mourinho revisits Goodison Park for the first time in 6 years and much has changed since he was last in the away dugout at the impressive ground. Only 2 Everton players have survived from their 2006-07 campaign under David Moyes. Tim Howard was on loan from Manchester United and Leon Osman, who played in midfield in that season alongside Mikel Arteta, Tim Cahill and Lee Carsley.
There have been impressive changes at Chelsea too in that time. Petr Cech, Ashley Cole, John Terry and Frank Lampard are the only ‘old guard’ that remain in the Chelsea side, an impressive feat in an ever-changing team. Since then, Frank Lampard has become Chelsea’s all-time top scorer as well as also making his 100th appearance for England (as well as Ashley Cole, who currently has 105 to his name)
What makes for most intriguing reading however is that Chelsea had 3 current...

Ever since it was announced that David Moyes was going to succeed Sir Alex Ferguson at the end of last season there has been constant rumours that the Belgian might be following the Scot to Old Trafford. Everton have recently rejected a £28 million bid for him and England left back, Leighton Baines.
Since arriving in the Premier League from Standard Liège for a fee of £15 million Fellaini has made a huge impression as his 6’4 frame is a threat to any defence in the league and his black haired afro is a common sight on match day at Goodision Park. Although through most of his time on Merseyside he has been a good performer, it was last season that Fellaini managed to break through as he scored 11 goals in the league and had some out standing performers as he played in a more attacking position following the departure of Tim Cahill.

Sundays mean one thing: Sunday papers. Sunday papers mean one thing: transfer gossip – lots of it.
The Rumour Mill
Both the Sunday People (which is linked with the Mirror) and yesterday’s Mail Online claim that Frank Lampard is to reopen talks with Chelsea over a new contract, just a day after becoming the second-highest ever goalscorer for the Blues.
The People also reports that Manchester City have placed a bumper £45m bid for Edison Cavani from Napoli – leaving Mario Balotelli‘s future at the club in the balance. AC Milan are said to be interested in the Manchester City troublemaker, but will not make a move until the summer.
The Sunday Mirror says that Arsene Wenger is interested in a number of players – most notably Wigan midfielder James McCarthy, who the Gunners value at £8m.
Luka Modric could be on his way back to the Premier League, also according to the Mirror.

EA Sports have just unveiled their brand new TV ad for this year’s upcoming football epic FIFA 13, and it features some very familiar faces, including Messi, Joe Hart, Tim Cahill and one man whose absence in today’s Transfer Deadline Day merry-go-round is a tragedy – Harry Redknapp.
The former Tottenham manager, unceremoniously binned at the end of last season after an insipid run by his team is ironically pictured taking tactical lessons from an adolescent FIFA expert in one of the best sequences of a very good TV advert.
Exciting stuff.

According to the Daily Mirror, Liverpool midfielder Charlie Adam may be on the verge of becoming the first player to cross the Liverpool divide since Gary Ablett 20 years ago and for a knockdown price of just £5million, with compatriot David Moyes poised to make a sensational move to bring him to Everton.
The report states that Moyes is in the market to replace Jack Rodwell who joined Manchester City earlier this week in a £15m move, and that the low asking price has attracted Moyes, whose brother Kenny is Adam’s agent. Adams is available as Brendan Rodgers is offering his services around behind the scenes, as Adams is unlikely to start under the new boss despite having only joined the club a year ago for £9m.
If Moyes were to land his man, it would come at the second attempt as he wanted Adam to join him at Everton...

Everton’s 2011/2012 Premier League campaign ended with a string of attacking performances and encouraging victories that left most bluenoses sighing into their scarves, bemoaning another slow start and a lack of summer transfer activity as the perpetual thorns in their frustrating side. It took the winter arrivals of loan stars Landon Donovan and Steven Pienaar, and the January signings of Darron Gibson and Nikica Jelavic to kick-start a season that had looked bleak in August when former talisman Mikel Arteta took his creative flair and deep brown eyes to pastures new, leaving the Toffees stuck for ideas and scrambling around for kneejerk hope.
This time around, David Moyes has moved quickly to avoid another panic, securing the services of free agent and Ranger’s (insert apprpriate word here) Steven Naismith: a player who, if he avoids injury, may be the long term replacement of Tim Cahill, as a similarly flexible and feisty poacher man.

With David Moyes’ team not reaching their full potential this season and with Martin O’Neill wanting to make his first season as Sunderland manager glorious, both sides will be giving everything tonight in their F.A Cup Quarter-final replay. Swansea will be looking to extend their excellent recent run of form against an Everton side who find themselves in a tough run of closely knit fixtures.
The Swans have reached their peak position thus far in the season, at 8th place, after three consecutive wins and three consecutive clean sheets. The wins have also dispelled the doubters of Swansea who stated that their inconsistent away form and match-ups against teams who could match their style of play could be their downfall.
However two away wins against Wigan, with 10 men, and convincingly against Fulham plus a landmark victory over then leaders Manchester City has certainly raised their stock to the point of some media experts even tipping them to secure a top 7 finish.
The focus for the players and the fans though will be reaching safety, something which looks pretty much guaranteed but a point or more at the Liberty...

Team news ahead of today’s Premier League clash between Everton and Chelsea at Goodison Park. Kick-off is at 3pm and is not televised anywhere in the UK.
Everton’s treatment table still reads key players Phil Jagielka (knee), Jack Rodwell (hamstring), Leon Osman (knee) and Seamus Coleman (thigh) as unavailable. Though there is some good news with the return of Tim Cahill who has shaken off a foot injury and should play.
Transfer window signing Nikica Jelavic will likely make his Goodison Park debut for manager David Moyes.
For Andre Villas-Boas’ Chelsea, Frank Lampard and John Obi Mikel have fought their back to fitness and could return after overcoming their respective calf and hamstring injuries.

A lot of Newcastle United fans (me included by the way) thought Monday Night’s live televised fixture away at Stoke would be the venue for Newcastle United’s amazing unbeaten run to come to an end but a stunning performance and real grit shown from The Mags saw them win in style at a ground where very few visiting sides take all three points. Sir. Alex Ferguson will be thankful that the Premier League fixture list Gods have given him the 12pm early afternoon kick-off today at Goodison Park as The Red Devils travel to Merseyside looking to forget Sunday’s humiliating 6-1 derby defeat as soon as possible. The objective of the game for United today is not to play pretty, it’s just to get points on that table and get back to dominating the division they way they started the campaign.
Lately they have been dropping points they weren’t at the beginning. Man United have dropped seven points in their last four league games and although points shared with Liverpool and Stoke on away trips don’t sound too bad, the home defeat to Man City means a win today is important, not just for the title challenge but for psychological reasons.
Some would say Everton are their for the picking.

Chelsea put in another strong performance to overcome Everton at Stamford Bridge, as they ran out 3-1 winners. The Blues were efficient with possession – rather than throw wave after wave of attacks at the Toffees their moves were precise and effective. Goals from Daniel Sturridge, John Terry and Ramires helped Andre Villas-Boas’ team to victory. Apostolos Vellios got a consolation for the visitors who were second best for most of the game.
Everton are usually something of a bogey team for Chelsea, the last time the Blues managed to beat the resilient Toffees was the Fa Cup final back in 2009, and David Moyes’ side took four points from the two league meetings between the two last season.
But Andre Villas-Boas has been biding his time, waiting for the Manchester clubs to slip up. With United dropping two points earlier in the day against Liverpool the Blues could move within a point of the Red Devils.

David Moyes’ men have always been up for the challenge against Chelsea and have a great record at the ground, drawing their last five meetings here, as well as getting revenge on their Fa Cup final defeat by knocking them out of the competition on penalties here last season. Liverpool will travel across Stanley Park to face their local rivals Everton at lunchtime today live on Sky Sports, in what is English football’s most played fixture.
The game at Goodison Park will be the 216th in all competitions between the two neighbouring teams and promises to be a fast paced, heavy tackling affair. Everton, who have the home crowd advantage, will be looking for a third successive Merseyside derby without defeat, as they picked up a 2-0 win in this same fixture last season and also managed a 2-2 draw at Anfield. The Toffees have only lost one home game in the Premier League since November and the Reds haven’t won an away game outside of London since March.
Although being strong in front of their own fans, David Moyes’ men lost their first game of the season...

What better place to start this week than at the beginning? Kind of like Genesis, nothing to do with Phil Collins mind, I refer to that story of God creating the world in seven days. I’m not here for theological debate mind you, despite being told I am quite the pub philosopher.
Following a similar tack to Genesis, with Arsene Wenger assuming the role of God, the Frenchman plucked Arsenal from the doldrums of Bruce Rioch. Light from where there was once only dark, creating stars from nothing and so on and so forth.
The simile would be even more fitting if Genesis then detailed God’s master plan of removing the stars and replacing them with eco-friendly, energy saving light bulbs, a result of the seventh day resting on transfer deadline day. Why one would only be able to purchase light bulbs during the transfer window I don’t know,...

Like the vagrant at a bus stop that won’t leave you alone, here I am to give you my Premiership round up for week four of the Barclay’s Premier League. I feel like this should be followed by a dramatic orchestral score, alas, this is a single media experience.
Following a brief break in play for international fixtures, Liverpool looked to maintain their bright start to the season away from home to Stoke City.
With several years of careful buying, dogged support and astute management from Tony Pulis, the Potters have firmly established themselves as a solid top flight team. Having spent well on players such as Jonathan Woodgate, Wilson Palacios and Peter Crouch, they have improved a side that reached the Fa Cup final last season and already boasts the likes of Ryan Shawcross, Kenwyene Jones and Jermaine Pennant.
Much to the disappointment of the travelling Merseysiders on Saturday afternoon,...

Aston Villa v Wolves
Prediction: 1-1
Wolves have won all three of their games this season and will go into this derby match high on confidence, however Villa are also in good form despite losing Downing, Friedel and Young over the summer. With both teams having only conceded one goal each, this could a very tight game.
Wigan v Qpr
Prediction:0-1
Wigan are probably the most underwhelming side in the league and will further prove it this weekend. Qpr should be buoyant, free from the shackles of the Carling cup, about to sign philosopher Joey Barton and recently taken over by Tony Fernandes who has offered many fans part refunds on their season tickets. It may not be the most entertaining of games but Qpr should just about come out on top.
Blackburn v Everton
Prediction: 1-2
Everton will have been very disappointed to lose to Qpr last week...

Like an old friend you haven’t seen for a while, the Premiership is back. Last week was a novelty, stirring the old emotions, nostalgia in the air, recounting those glorious moments from seasons passed. Now, already it’s taken for granted, consumed once again by the utter banality that is the routine of existence. Still, we love it all the same right?
On that cheerful note, here is the weekend round up.
The first game to kick off the day was every pie seller’s dream, the Tyne-Wear derby. It was the 145th time these two had met in a competitive fixture, not particularly anything in the way of a landmark number but still, I’m never one to pass up on the sharing of pointless trivia. Sunderland have spent the majority of the Premiership years living in the shadow of their once (sort of) illustrious (kind of) neighbours,...

Just like Americans, it turned out Australians also love couple Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens who maintain a low profile when it comes to their romance. The pair, who began dating when they first filmed "High School Musical", was named the Cutest Couple at 2010 Australian Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards.
Efron and Hudgens fought off strong contender, one of most beloved couples, Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart. Efron and Hudgens also beat out the likes of newly-married couple Orlando Bloom and Miranda Kerr as well as newly-reconciled pair Liam Hemsworth and Miley Cyrus.
Moreover, YouTube sensation Justin Bieber landed Hottest Hottie nod at the event, which was held at the Sydney Entertainment Center on Friday October 8, leaving Taylor Lautner as well his ex-girlfriend Taylor Swift and Australian native Rachael Finch empty handed.
Joining Efron and Hudgens as well as Bieber in the winner list was host of variety show "Rove", Rove McManus,...

Thirty-eight days before the games began, famed photographer Annie Leibovitz gathered; Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo, Ivory Coast’s Didier Drogba, Cameroon’s Samuel Eto’o, Ghana’s Sulley Muntari, the U.S.A.’s Landon Donovan, Brazil’s Kaka and Pato, Italy’s Gianluigi Buffon,...

Clive Owen has admitted that he got "very shy and tongue-tied" in the presence of footballer Steven Gerrard and musician David Bowie. Owen, a Liverpool Fc supporter, said that crossing paths with two of his idols are the only times he has ever been starstruck. "I've met a lot of big actors and don't really get phased - but David Bowie and Steven Gerrard, I was in trouble!" he said. "I have Gerrard's shirt from a derby game which [Everton player] Tim Cahill got for me. He grabbed (more)...

Both Jeff Parker and Steve Lieber are well-known in the world of comics. Parker, a veteran writer of such titles as Marvel Adventures Fantastic Four and Guy Ritchie’s Gamekeeper and Lieber, the artist responsible for drawing the monster hit Whiteout, have worked side by side as partners in Portland’s Periscope studios for years. But they’ve never worked on a project together before. That is, until now.
This year, the two have teamed up to create the five-issue miniseries Underground, which hits stores in September and is published by Image Comics. Parker and Lieber were nice enough to share some pages of the new book — which are featured at the end of the interview. I also had a chance to chat with the creators a bit about the new book, their inspiration for creating it, Steve’s reaction now that the Whiteout movie is finally on the way and more.
