You know that when prolific director Doug Campbell is involved in a thriller, it’s going to be a ridiculously good time. So although The Manny, written by screenwriters Tamar Halpern and Scotty Mullen, isn’t on the same level as this year’s She’s Obsessed with My Husband, it’s still got plenty to recommend.
Lani McCall (Joanne Jansen) is a food vlogger on the rise. She’s on the cusp of signing a major network contract, thanks to love interest Zack (Brendan Morgan), but her recent divorce from unreliable husband Darren (Jamaal Grant) has left her in a precarious child care situation.
Lani tends to rely on assistant/producer Mercedes (Hailey Summer), but it’s not a sustainable situation. What she really needs is a nanny for her son, Jaylen (Ashton Ayres); ideally as soon as possible.
Enter Morgan (Michael Evans Behling), a hunky 23 year old who cooks,...

Lifetime’s interest in stalking this month continues with screenwriter David Chester’s bonkers She’s Obsessed with My Husband. Directed by Doug Campbell with a lurid, campy touch, the film is a delightful romp that only falters when it focuses too much on its least interesting character in the third act. Aside from that misstep, however, this Lifetime property is an absolute blast.
The film opens with the usual attention-grabbing set piece. On their 19th wedding anniversary, Mason (Zach De Nardi) discovers his wife Violet (Alissa Filoramo) looking at pictures of her high school sweetheart Garrett. When Mason confronts Violet, ripping her beloved picture in the process, she strangles him with his own tie.
While it is disappointing to learn later that this isn’t a murder (though it does result in divorce), it’s a very amusing way to begin the film. What is even more delightful is...

Stalked By My Doctor.Recently I was flipping through the seasonal calendar at a Boston-area repertory cinema, and a program dedicated to the enterprising feminist filmmaker Joyce Chopra caught my eye. I wondered how Chopra’s six-decade career, spanning everything from short-form documentaries and TV movies to Sundance-winning features and stage plays televised for PBS, would be condensed into a curated selection of screenings. In fact it would only be two: Smooth Talk (1985), one of Chopra’s two theatrically-released features, and Joyce at 34 (1972), a short documentary that she co-directed with Claudia Weill early in her career.I’m not ignorant of the creative merits or historical importance of these films, nor the rights/access issues resolved by Criterion’s recent physical release of a 4K restoration of Smooth Talk, which includes Joyce at 34 as a special feature. But as I look at rep theater programs across the country and see...

The King in the North? I see what you did there, Brewery Ommegang. Created with Jon Snow in mind, King in the North is a new stout beer filled with dark, roasted goodness, and it will be the last in the very cool Game of Thrones-inspired beer series Royal Reserve Collection that can be purchased through the brewery.

We’re always good for a gooey Lifetime Movie with 2009’s Accused at 17, Mti has got one that reads like it fits the bill—well, the title does at least.
Mti will issue the mystery-drama Accused at 17 on DVD on Aug. 2 for the list price of $24.95.
Nicole Gale Anderson (r.) is in a helluva lot of trouble in Accused at 17.
Here’s what it’s all about: When high school teenager Bianca (Nicole Gale Anderson, Make It or Break It) finds out her boyfriend has cheated on her with a classmate Dory (Lindsay Taylor, Hitman’s Run), she’s furious and out for revenge. Bianca and her best friends, Fallyn (Janet Montgomery, Black Swan) and Sarah (Stella Maeve, The Runaways), team up to play a prank on the girl to make her pay. Whenever a new cast member is announced for Wes Craven's new Scream sequel, we kind of assume they're due a knife in the ribs from Ghostface. If that's the case then the bodycount's going to be sizeable, since Anthony Anderson and Marielle Jaffe are now reportedly joining Scream 4's Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox, David Arquette, Emma Roberts, Hayden Panettiere, Rory Culkin, Lake Bell and Nico Tortorella. It's a high-profile gig for the early-career Jaffe, who so-far only has a role as one of the eight 'Aphrodite Girls' in Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief under her belt. She'll also shortly be seen in Doug Campbell's kidnap-drama Locked Away.Anderson is a more familiar face, from Transformers, The Departed, and Andrzej Bartkowiak's action 'trilogy' (Romeo Must Die, Exit Wounds, Cradle 2 the Grave). Most intriguingly (and amusingly) though, he's also a veteran of the Scream-ripping Scary Movie franchise,...

"Christine Conradt reveals the art of being a screenwriter"
by Michael Aaron Gallagher of StayFamous.Net
If you’ve ever found yourself lost in the on-screen magic of motion pictures, captivated by a dramatic action sequence, laughing out loud in a theater, or simply falling in love with a romantic line spoken by your favorite movie star, chances are you had to remind yourself that it’s all a fairytale, a world in which the actors merely play a part that has been written for them.
But where do those words come from and who imagines them?
Christine Conradt, screenwriter for the new film “Accused at Seventeen,” starring former Golden Globe nominee Cynthia Gibb, Nicole Gale Anderson (of the Disney Channel original series “Jonas”), and Reiley McClendon (“The Flyboys”), recently explained that the process of writing a screenplay for a film or television series is often a collaborative effort.
