He and Gaspar Henaine "Capulina" were proud of their movie Cascabelito (1962), which was based on a story written by Campos. They said it was "the first one that has real quality." Henaine was a cousin of Emile Kuri, who worked for Walt Disney. Campos and Henaine met with Kuri in Los Angeles to discuss the possibility of making a Viruta and Capulina movie for Disney. They also planned to send Kuri a print of Cascabelito so Disney could see their best work.
His paternal grandfather, Roberto Campos Pedroza, was a shawl vendor from La Piedad, Michoacán, Mexico.
He was a great-great-grandson of the 24th President of Mexico, Juan Nepomuceno Álvarez y Hurtado de Luna (1790-1867). His maternal grandmother, Mercedes Contreras Álvarez, was a granddaughter of Álvarez.
