Frank Grillo knows what he wants.
The erstwhile Crossbones of the MCU has crafted a niche for himself as a contemporary Charles Bronson over the last decade, parlaying mainstream buzz from projects like “The Purge 2” and Mma drama series “Warrior” into a string of superior indie action movies — even if he himself shies away from Bronson comparisons when speaking about his career.
“Not that I’m comparing myself to Charles Bronson, because I couldn’t,” Grillo told IndieWire during a recent interview over Zoom, adding with a laugh, “Charles Bronson never took his shirt off on a soap opera.”
With respect to Grillo, Bronson simply didn’t have the same range. Grillo emerged from a three-year run on “Guiding Light” in the late ’90s to a decade as a working actor before landing a juicy supporting role in the Liam Neeson-starring “The Grey.” Then came 2014 and his role...

Looking to keep his post-Oscar slap career resuscitation on more of an upward arc following the under-seen Emancipation, Will Smith is adding a new action thriller to his To Do list. He's now attached to star in Sugar Bandits.
This is a film that has been in development at Universal for a few years now; Joe Carnahan was rumoured to direct back in 2013, but he's nowhere to be found in Variety's story on Smith's jumping aboard.
Chuck Hogan, who worked on The Town and TV's The Strain remains attached, adapting his novel Devils In Exile. The script will focus on an Iraq War veteran named Neal Maven (Smith) who returns from the conflict with little hope of a good job or a satisfying future.
He teams up with a group of fellow vets to target the ill-gotten gains of Boston's drug trade, putting them firmly into the crosshairs of criminal types.

The EFM (European Film Market) continues to heat up, with another promising project hitting the scene. Will Smith will star in the biggest-budgeted project at the show, Sugar Bandits. With a reported budget that circles $80 million, Sugar Bandits follows “a former Special Forces solider who joins an elite, vigilante squad aiming to wipe out the drug trade in Boston, but soon learns things are not what they seem.”
Sugar Bandits has sat on the Hollywood sidelines with Universal setting director Joe Carnahan on the project. However, it’s now heading to EFM, where filmmakers scope out independent projects. Sugar Bandits is based on the screenplay and novel Devils In Exile by Chuck Hogan, with Smith and Jon Mone producing through Westbrook Studios. Ryan Shimizaki oversees the project, with Stuart Ford joining the production effort through AGC Studios, which is financing the film entirely. Additionally, Richard Abate produces via 3 Arts Entertainment.

It’s hard to imagine nowadays, but humans weren’t always at the top of the food chain. And with our ancestors being preyed upon by larger mammals and even our fellow humanoids, it stands to reason that we’d develop a generalized fear of the dark. That’s why it makes sense that cold places where the sun doesn’t routinely rise are naturally suited for spooky stories.
This is precisely what showrunner Issa López had in mind when she came up with HBO’s True Detective: Night Country, a brand-new murder mystery that returns the anthology show to its horrific roots. And with new episodes dropping weekly, we’ve decided to help viewers get an additional fix of frigid frights by recommending six arctic thrillers to watch after Td: Night Country.
As usual, don’t forget to comment below with your own arctic favorites if you think we missed a particularly spooky one.

If a writer options their screenplay for a fee tied to the film’s budget and that budget is later increased, is their manager obligated to disclose the bump and renegotiate their pay if the manager is also a producer on the project?
The answer to that question appears to be no, at least in the case of screenwriter Kurt McLeod, who sued Zero Gravity Management alleging it had a conflict of interest when it negotiated his deal for writing Copshop.
U.S. District Judge Fred Slaughter, in an order issued on Tuesday, found that Zero Gravity and its founders Eric and Mark Williams won’t have to face a suit accusing them of prioritizing their payout for producing Copshop to the detriment of their client by failing disclose that the budget for the movie had been substantially raised. Lieutenant Reginald Barclay was an outlier among "Star Trek" characters. First appearing in the "Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "Hollow Pursuits", Barclay was a timid fellow, unable to converse with his co-workers and always late for his shifts in engineering. He was occasionally able to offer unique and helpful insights to engineering problems, but no one liked working with him because he was so awkward. Barclay found solace on the Enterprise's holodeck, where he recreated holographic versions of his co-workers that he could dominate or romance without consequences. When Counselor Troi (Marina Sirtis) discovered Barclay's proclivities -- including a sexualized holographic recreation of herself -- she informed the lieutenant that he might have some deep-seated issues that they weren't addressing in his therapy.
Barclay was an outlier because he wasn't bushy-tailed and capable all the time. Most characters on "Star Trek" have an impressive set of starship-operation skills or...

“The Continental” boasts that it’s “From the World of John Wick.” But the Peacock spin-off is thankfully uninterested in providing a microwaved version of the same story. Instead, the miniseries takes its cues from stylized crime auteurs, folks like Joe Carnahan or Guy Ritchie who have as much fun, if not more, with their eccentric character archetypes, rat-a-tat banter and bold needledrops as they do with any blood shed on screen.
But “The Continental” merely aspires to these authors of cinematic cool. And in its Icarus-esque reach, what it faintly grasps only reminds us how hard it is to make something look easy.
Over three sprawling, 90-minute episodes, “The Continental” is centered on a simple story, one that has roots as recent as “The Raid” and as far back as “Rio Bravo” – or more accurately, John Carpenter’s riffs on “Rio Bravo” like “Assault on Precinct 13” or “Escape From New York.

Josh Duhamel will join the ensemble of the survival thriller “Not Without Hope,” an adaptation of Nick Schuyler and Jere Longman’s best-selling book that will be written and directed by Joe Carnahan. Also joining the cast are JoBeth Williams, Quentin Plair, Terrence Terrell and Marshall Cook.
As previously announced, Zachary Levi (“Shazam!”) is starring in the film, which tells the real-life story of a tragic 2009 boating accident involving Schuyler, his friends Will Bleakley (Cook) and NFL players Marquis Cooper (Plair) and Corey Smith (Terrell). Levi will play Schuyler.
The search-and rescue-operation captivated national attention. Duhamel will portray U.S. Coast Guard Captain Timothy Close, who oversaw a crew that cut through the ocean to try to find the friends who went missing.

Christopher Nolan's "Oppenheimer" might be the most feverishly anticipated film of 2023. For starters, it's the latest film from one of the most reliably brilliant directors on the planet. Secondly, if you look at the cast, you'll notice that it features every working actor in Hollywood.
And then there's this: for a variety of reasons, J. Robert Oppenheimer, arguably the most pivotal figure in the whole of human history, has never been given justice in a motion picture.
Oppenheimer spearheaded the Manhattan Project, which produced the first successfully detonated nuclear bomb. This weapon of mass, fiery destruction was inflicted on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan as a means of bringing World War II to a definitive end. The objective was achieved so decisively that the weaponry has never been used again.
Oppenheimer is a fascinating man. He was thoughtful, well-read, and ultimately regretful of his creation insofar as their proliferation endangered the future of humanity.

Neeson and Cooper both starred in the film adaptation of the classic television series The A-Team starring Mr. T. The original 1983 program was about a group of ex-special forces on the run from the military for a crime they didn’t commit.
Neeson’s 2010 adaptation of the television series focused on the main premise of the show and expanded upon it. The star agreed to play the leader of the group Hannibal Smith after getting a taste of the film’s story.

“Shazam! Fury of the Gods” actor Zachary Levi added another headache to the DC Universe over the weekend. Levi, who led the original 2019 film, sparked backlash after appearing to tweet an anti-Pfizer sentiment January 29. “Hardcore agree,” he wrote in response to a tweet stating, “Do you agree or not, that Pfizer is a real danger to the world?” The original tweet came from Lyndon Wood, an entrepreneur and self-described “factual and truthful conspiracy theorist.”
Levi did not make any specific reference to Pfizer’s Covid-19 vaccine, but Twitter users were quick to chalk up Levi’s endorsement as anti-vax. Levi followed up the tweet with a link to a Department of Justice press release detailing a 2.3 marketing fraud settlement paid by Pfizer in 2009.
Peter Safran and James Gunn, the co-heads and CEOs of DC Studios which backs the “Shazam” films, addressed the controversy during their DC presentation on the Warner Bros. lot Monday.

After saddling up for The Harder They Fall, Jeymes Samuel brings Lakeith Stanfield and Omar Sy to his next feature project, The Book of Clarence. Legendary recently snagged the rights to the film directed, written, and composed by Samuel, with James Lassiter, Shawn Carter, and Tendo Nagenda producing. The Book of Clarence isn’t the trio’s first rodeo with Samuel. Lassiter and Carter were producers on The Harder They Fall, while Nageda served as a producer on the rough-and-tumble Western.
Speaking about The Harder They Fall, Stanfield played Cherokee Bill in the movie starring Idris Elba, Zazie Beetz, Jonathan Majors, DeWanda Wise, Edi Gathegi, Rj Cyler, Jacob Howard, Regina King, Danielle Deadwyler, and more. The Harder They Fall received positive reviews from most critics when it moseyed onto Netflix in 2021. The praise made Samuel a talent to watch and kept Hollywood interested in his next effort.

This… This is how you take a genre or story device and make it feel fresh! Let’s be honest the old re-living the same day over and over till it has a satisfying conclusion is a trope we have seen many many times. Groundhog Day and more recently Happy Death Day are a couple that spring to mind, so when I read the synopsis for Boss Level I did kind of shake my head. 1997 called and wants its Quentin Tarantino knockoff back. That’s the bottom line on Bullet Train, a new dark comedy/thriller directed by David Leitch. Overlong, tedious, and endlessly self-satisfied, this is a movie that thinks it’s funny to score a montage of violence to an Engelbert Humperdinck song (which is announced as it happens).
Even 25 years ago, the idea got stale fast as one Tarantino wannabe after another tried and failed to emulate the original. The film thinks it’s being clever, but the mix of pop culture-drenched, faux-savvy dialogue, ironic and plentiful needle drops, “look at me” cameos, and cartoon-y violence was a lot better back when Qt was first doing it.
Based on a novel by Japanese author Kōtarō Isaka, the movie is slightly enlivened by hard-working performances from Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Joey King, and Brian Tyree Henry, as well as some striking design and cinematography, but...

The early work of a string of directors comes to mind while watching Bullet Train, among them Quentin Tarantino, Robert Rodriguez, Guy Ritchie, Joe Carnahan and Timur Bekmambetov. The difference is that those filmmakers have mostly moved on from this kind of assaultive bloodbath, which pummels you into numbness with its onslaught of glib dark comedy, escalating carnage and over-the-top gore. David Leitch’s directing credits — Atomic Blonde, Deadpool 2, Hobbs & Shaw — have remained firmly tethered to his stunt background, occasionally with entertaining results. But his latest is so busy delivering violent action with a self-satisfied wink that its contorted plotting and one-note characters get real tedious real fast.

Ray Liotta, who starred in the Martin Scorsese mob classic Goodfellas, in addition to roles in Cop Land and Field of Dreams, has died at the age of 67.
A cause of death was not immediately available, but a rep for the actor confirmed to Rolling Stone that Liotta died in his sleep while on location in the Dominican Republic, where he was reportedly shooting the film Dangerous Waters.
Over a career that spanned 40 years, Liotta specialized in portraying tough-talking, no-nonsense characters often embroiled in the criminal underworld, or lighthearted variations of that character in comedies.
