Long Awol from Home Video — the last time I peeked it was an unwatchable pan-and-scanned laserdisc — this early Charles Band opus came at a time when the purveyor of third-class horror thrills could command a budget. A rather phenomenal list of ’70s special effects hopefuls collaborated to give the show lasting appeal, mainly by including some stop motion monsters from a parallel dimension. An average American family spends a chaotic night battling bizarre phemoneema… phelomea… stuff that’s leaked into our reality through that nuisance Sci-fi catch-all, a Time-Space Warp. A pair of big name stars twenty years past their sell-by date endure all manner of rubber critters, zipping flying saucers and green-glowing supernatural artifacts!

Released 40 years ago today, Brian De Palma’s 1976 adaptation of Stephen King’s debut novel Carrie remains a masterpiece of modern horror. It is a teenage pop nightmare of a film, a dreamy exploration of horrors both real and supernatural. Expertly directed, gorgeously photographed and acted with total sincerity by a cast of then-newcomers, it remains one of the very best King adaptations despite being first out of the gate.
Know how I know De Palma’s Carrie is a brilliant adaptation and one of the best horror movies ever made? Because other filmmakers have tried adapting it three other times across three other decades: Katt Shea in 1999 (with The Rage: Carrie 2, basically a Carrie remake and the best of the lot), David Carson for SyFy in 2002 and, most recently, Kimberly Pierce in 2013. None of them come close to touching the 1976 original.

In the Special Editions, the Rebo Band were big victims of George Lucas' digital wand. Here's how CGI changed them - seemingly forever...
In 1997, Star Wars began its ineluctable turn to the digital side. A New Hope, re-released in January that year, marked the first of George Lucas’s Special Edition revamps of his blockbuster saga; then 20 years old, the original 70s print was decaying. Effects shots were damaged. Darth Vader’s once imposing black mask and cloak had faded to a wan shade of pale blue.
To combat the ravages of time, Lucas embarked on an expensive and lavish restoration of the movies, improving the quality of the sound, re-balancing and correcting the colours and placing them back where they belonged: on the big screen. While fans were delighted at the prospect of seeing Star Wars in theatres again, Lucas’ reissues didn’t stop at...

From Star Trek: Generations through to Star Trek: Nemesis - here are 47 nerdy spots in the Next Generation films...
Since Star Trek: The Motion Picture in 1979, the Star Trek cinematic outings have proved to be a smorgasbord of references and famous actors (or those who would go on to be), and often had complex behind the scenes events that stopped some rather, ahem, fascinating moments making it to the final version. We found lots of nerdy spots in the first six films here.
This time out we look at the films featuring the cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation and choose 47 factoids. Granted, there's a lot more than that of interest, but we've tried for ones that you might not be aware of.
Oh, and there are some major spoilers...

Could anyone have guessed when Stephen King published his first novel Carrie in 1974 that it would spawn no fewer than four big screen adaptations? Brian De Palma’s 1976 version remains the first and best, but each subsequent filmmaker who comes at the material seeks to find something new and unexplored in King’s book. Of the two remakes and one sequel released in the last 16 years, only one movie has succeeded in being different enough to justify its own existence. It’s The Rage: Carrie 2, and it’s being packaged with the 2002 made-for-tv remake on a new double feature Blu-ray from Scream Factory.
By now you already know the story of Carrie White, a shy and awkward teenage girl raised by a religious zealot mother and possessing some major telekinetic abilities. When some kids at school decide play a big, bloody prank on her the prom, Carrie retaliates with...

Sometimes, high school can be a virtual hell. Mileage varies by the individual, of course, but in a place where acceptance at a lunch table can be akin to finding an oasis in a desert, there's more weight on the shoulders of many teens than just their backpack straps. Such is the case for Ewen High School student Carrie White, the telekinetic titular character of Stephen King's seminal debut novel published in 1974.
Carrie has been adapted for the screen multiple times for multiple generations, and Scream Factory is giving the Generation Y versions a high-definition upgrade, with their Carrie and The Rage: Carrie 2 double feature Blu-ray now set to hit shelves with an official release date and bonus features, including two new audio commentaries.

Because we were obviously in desperate need of a new "Blob" movie, cinematic auteur Simon West ("Con Air," "Lara Croft: Tomb Raider") has signed on to helm yet another remake of the 1958 drive-in classic, which was previously remade in 1988 by director Chuck Russell. Kevin Dillon starring vehicles were all the rage back then, obvs. Did we ask for this? I don't know, I think I'm good honestly. But since it's happening and there's pretty much nothing we can do about it, take a trip back with me as I revisit a few more horror films Hollywood just couldn't keep their hands off of - and judge which of the versions is the best. "King Kong" The 1933 classic was first remade in 1976 with Jessica Lange and Jeff Bridges, who starred opposite the robotic ape from the Universal Studios tram ride. Nearly 30 years later Peter Jackson decided to remake it as an epic three-hour film,...

Rumours suggest that original cuts of Star Wars are heading to Blu-ray. But how likely is that? Ryan weighs up the possibilities...
For many Star Wars fanatics, the special edition release of the Original Trilogy back in 1997 was a bittersweet moment. On one hand, it offered us the chance to see George Lucas's space opera films in their natural habitat: on a huge cinema screen.
Then there's the restoration to consider: Lucasfilm took the original Star Wars negatives from its archives and cleaned them up, removing years of dirt and scratches, and restoring the colours to their original balance. Thanks to the efforts of people like effects supervisor Dave Carson and his team, Darth Vader's outfit was once again black and imposing, not an embarrassing shade of faded blue.
During this process, however, George Lucas decided to make a number of small yet significant alterations: the insertion of new effects shots,...

President Barack Obama has condemned the violence in Ferguson, Missouri, criticizing the use of excessive force by police trying to temper riots that have rocked the town for days. "I know emotions are raw right now in Ferguson and there are certainly passionate differences about what has happened," Obama said in a news conference Thursday afternoon. "But let's remember that we're all part of one American family, we are united in common values and that includes the belief in equality under the law, respect for public order and the right to peaceful public protests." The conflict began after the reportedly unarmed Michael Brown,...

The original, 1976's Carrie, based off of a book written by Stephen King ("Misery"), was directed by Brian De Palma and starred Sissy Spacek as Carrie White. A great film. But, I wanted to point out that I recently watched the 2002 remake. It was a television movie, directed by David Carson and starred Angela Bettis in the lead role. But, it's not the direction of the film or the acting that stood out, it was the writing. So, after the film ended I felt compelled to see who had made all these small but clever changes from the original feature film, that gave it that je ne sais quoi. Lo and behold, it was Bryan Fuller. Who is the creator of two of my favorite series, Pushing Daisies and more recently, Hannibal. Why do I bring this up? For one, anyone that likes Carrie should give the 2002 remake a...

Like it or not, a remake of Carrie is well on its way, and the search for the Stephen King-created crazy-ass psychokinetic teenaged lunatic has been narrowed down to two possible choices. Read on for details.
According to New York Magazine's Vulture, the two main contenders are 15-year-old Chloë Moretz (Kick-Ass) and the 24-year-old Haley Bennett (Lawless). But wait! There's more! The site also reports that for the role of Carrie's unhinged fundamentalist mother, director Kimberly Peirce has approached Jodie Foster and is interested in Julianne Moore. Interesting. Tell us what you think below.
Carrie was previously turned into the 1976 film that starred Sissy Spacek, John Travolta, and Amy Irving with Piper Laurie as the repressive mother. In addition, in 2002 David Carson directed Angela Bettis as Carrie and Patricia Clarkson as her mother in a TV movie version written by Bryan Fuller.

We checked out a cool Lovecraftian short film entitled The Black Goat, written and directed by Joseph Nanni, recently and got word that there are big plans in store for the six-minute creation. The title of the film refers to Lovecraftian character Shub-Niggurath (also known as The Black Goat of the Woods with a Thousand Young) from the Cthulhu mythos.
Creator Nanni is currently working to turn The Black Goat into a feature film. During an interview on Undead Backbrain, Nanni said, “We’re in development and have a rather major distributor working with us. We haven’t talked cast yet, although Adam Wilson (Manson, Ending The Eternal) is locked in to play the lead. Production design has started, but I still may reach out to some Lovecraft luminaries for concept design.”

Until the release of the all-new, re-branded, back-to-the-beginning Star Trek in 2009 (dir. J. J. Abrams) commentators all over the world, from hardened Trekkies to critics landed with the job of reviewing the next Trek movie, were unanimously agreed on one thing: even-numbered Trek movies were better than the odd-numbered ones. This could vary from a mild assertion that the even-numbered films tended to be more enjoyable to the insistence that there was nothing of any value whatsoever in the odd-numbered films, but the general point was agreed. Perhaps it’s true that the even-numbered movies have tended to be particularly good – but I want to suggest here that the reverse is not true, and the odd-numbered movies as a whole are not actually that bad.
It’s easy to see how this notion came about; the two worst Trek films by far are both odd-numbered movies. Star Trek: The Motion Picture (dir.

Back in the day, designing an issue of Filmmaker meant two or three weeks of long evenings sitting around our office in the DGA building on 57th street with our beloved designer Wayne Van Acker. Wayne passed away a few years ago, but I thought of him today when I saw this notice that designer David Carson is returning to print journalism with a new magazine titled, appropriately, Carson. We were — and still are — closet design geeks, and we always held up certain designers as our heroes. Neville Brody was the one we could all agree on, with me remembering his great design for the now-defunct U.K. magazine The Face back in the ’80s. But the ’90s were the days of David Carson, whose radical typography and conceptual approach to print design was making waves in advertisements, in the pages of Ray Gun magazine, and in his own books.

The Guests of Honor list for the 2010 World Horror Convention is shaping up nicely. Editor Stephen Jones, one of the event's organizers, just informed us that artist Dave Carson was just announced as the second Artist Guest of Honor, joining the previously announced Les Edwards, and Author Guests of Honor Tanith Lee and David Case. Lee is an especially welcome guest, as she is one of the horror field's consistently sharpest, and most prolific, voices, and she has not attended many conventions in recent years. Carson is known best for his acclaimed H.P.Lovecraft illustrations, which have adorned many of the author's short stories. He's also illustrated work by Ramsey Campbell, Karl...
