Moving through the lobby of a posh Santa Monica hotel one May afternoon, Jerrod Carmichael is not so much walking as strutting. Tall and slender, he’s wearing a black cashmere sweater, matching pants, loafers, an Afro pick, and an outsize smile. And then there’s the brooch: Stunning gold. Cursive font. The letter R. “I love it so much,” Carmichael says, gazing down to admire the pin. It was a gift from a friend a few weeks ago, for Carmichael’s 35th birthday. Ever since, he’s been “building outfits around it.

Not to be outdone by Marvel’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story Adaptation, Idw is getting back into the tie-in game when 24: Legacy makes the jump to the comic book medium with Rules of Engagement.
In the past, Idw has found much success with a variety of series tied to properties originating in television and video games. Whether it be G.I. Joe, Silent Hill, or Metal Gear Solid, they’ve offered something for just about anybody. And seeing as how this isn’t their first rodeo involving 24, it only makes sense continuing that proud tradition.
Perhaps this five-part limited series will make the new Fox show an easier sell. After all, when one becomes attached to Kiefer Sutherland’s Jack Bauer for so long, getting used to another character may take some time. Seeing as how newcomer Eric Carter’s background will be detailed in this project,...

August 6th and 9th, 1945 forever changed the course of history. When the first nuclear bombs were dropped in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan, World War II ended, but a new fear was born that dominated the thoughts of all men, women, and children for decades to come. The Cold War, atomic bomb testing, a cartoon turtle telling children to “duck and cover”, and this new technology that had the actual potential to literally end the world changed the perception of what was scary. Art reflects life, so cinema began to capitalize on these fears. Gone were the days of creepy castles, cobwebs, bats, vampires, werewolves, and the other iconic images that ruled genre cinema in film’s earliest decades. Science fiction was larger than ever and giant ants, giant octopi, terror from beyond the stars, and...

It’s a scorching summer afternoon in Athens, Ga., the last day of Athfest 2003, and a few hundred people wait in the middle of Washington Street for the next act to take the hastily assembled outdoor stage. Finally, about 20 minutes late, local shoulda-beens Bloodkin slither onstage, ghostly pale, disheveled and sweat-soaked, hiding behind mirrored aviator shades. Frontman Danny Hutchens is dressed head-to-toe in black, his long, brown hair starting to gray from years of diving headfirst into places deeper and darker than most civilians could dream. But even more frightening is the sight of Hutchens’ best friend and lifelong musical partner-in-crime, the Keith to his Mick,...

In Dallas, Erik Carter wants to change the world as performer and as playwright. Nathaniel Beaver works on stage and behind the scenes in University of Central Florida's student-run festivals. And in North Carolina, third-year student Jasmine Osborne is finally getting to perform, while at UCLA freshman Valerie Brandy is performing in a campus soap opera. Want to read more?
