The biblical thriller Mary has reportedly wrapped production in Morocco, and Deadline reveals that the film will feature Sir Anthony Hopkins in another royal role after portraying the former King of Asgard, Odin, as well as Lear in the Prime original film, King Lear. Hopkins plays King Herod in the thriller that’s directed by DJ Caruso, whose credits include Disturbia, Eagle Eye and the Vin Diesel actioner xXx: Return of Xander Cage. He joins newcomer Noa Cohen, who plays the titular role. Cohen was chosen after a worldwide casting search and happened to grow up an hour away from where Mary was born in Israel. Cohen can be seen in the Israeli YA series My Nephew Bentz, Infinity and the 2022 feature Silent Game.
The plot synopsis, per Deadline, reads,
“In coming-of-age story Mary, the title character is shunned following the otherworldly conception of her child and forced into hiding.

It was 2017 the last time we saw Vin Diesel‘s action hero Xander Cage in xXx: Return of Xander Cage, but a fourth movie just got a little closer with some big news, and the Fast & Furious star has been getting fans excited on social media. According to Deadline, xXx 4 is on the upcoming slate of production company The H Collective, although production could get delayed due to the ongoing WGA and SAG strikes. It was previously reported that D.J. Caruso would return as director, with Diesel starring alongside Jay Chou (The Green Hornet) and Zoe Zhang (Eternal Wave). There is also a holdup due to a lawsuit from Weying Galaxy Entertainment, which claims H Collective and Diesel breached a contract on the production rights for xXx 4. Marcia DeRousse, who came to the aid of the supernatural as Dr. Patricia Ludwig on the HBO drama True Blood, died Saturday in Altadena after a long illness, a publicist announced. She was 70.
She wrote on Facebook in April that a fall in her doctor’s office was going to “lead to my death,” adding that the spill “caused my hiatal hernia to move to an area where it is now dangerous.”
The 4-foot-4 DeRousse made her big-screen debut alongside fellow little person Billy Barty in the Warner Bros. film Under the Rainbow (1981), also starring Chevy Chase and Carrie Fisher. She also was in the movies Tiptoes (2002) and D.J. Caruso’s The Disappointments Room (2016).

The episode of Revisited covering Disturbia was Written, Narrated, and Edited by Kier Gomes, Produced by Tyler Nichols and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
The suburbs can be a scary place. The quiet and seemingly peaceful neighborhoods can sometimes be the living place of the very worst of secrets. You’re neighbors all seem to keep to themselves but the lonely old man across the street may just be hiding something sinister only a few feet away from where he waters his lawn. After all, the scariest of things are often found in the least likely of places, which is partially what makes them scary in the first place. And in the case of 2007’s Disturbia (watch it Here), nothing will send you into a deeper spiral of fear and paranoia than being trapped in close proximity to the neighborhood boogeyman- and what’s worse is… nobody believes you.

Vin Diesel is a man of many franchises, some of which he himself has spearheaded. Alongside the hugely popular Fast & Furious, those franchises include the Pitch Black and XxX film series, the latter of which began his action star career. The initial 2002 film saw Xander Cage (Diesel) as an extreme sports enthusiast and rebellious stuntman working as a superspy for the National Security Agency, which tasked him to infiltrate a terrorist organization. The third film in the trilogy came in 2017’s xXx: The Return of Xander Cage, which saw Diesel return to the enter stage following the unsuccessful 2005 sequel starring Ice Cube. The Return of Xander Cage made over $346 million worldwide off a $85 million budget. Although a fourth film was announced by Diesel and director D.J. Caruso with The H Collective and Diesel’s own One Race Films production company, there’s currently a lawsuit preventing the movie from going forward.

Moving forward, Disney will try to make fewer, cheaper movies while “focus[ing] on improving the quality of our films,” Bob Iger promised analysts on a recent earnings call. While Iger has made promises to Wall Street about this before, it’s an issue that has raised alarm bells over the course of the summer as a slew of Hollywood tentpoles have failed to become profit-gushing blockbusters, in part due to their exorbitant budgets.
The likes of “Fast X,” “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny,” “The Little Mermaid” and “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts” ended up costing so much above the norm — at least in relation to their likely theatrical revenue — that they may not make money (or produce sequels) even with objectively decent box office.
Tom Cruise’s “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One” is on track to take in just $165 million domestically and $550 million globally despite strong reviews and solid buzz.

After bidding adieu to Drax the Destroyer with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Dave Bautista has set his next movie: action-comedy The Killer’s Game.
Lionsgate has come aboard the long-in-development project, acquiring worldwide distribution rights and setting J.J. Perry, the stuntman who made his directorial debut with Day Shift, to helm the feature.
Lionsgate will launch sales of Game at the Cannes film market, with production to begin this summer.
Based on a novel by Jay Bonansinga, Game follows a veteran assassin named Joe Flood (Bautista) who is diagnosed with a life-threatening illness. In order to set up his loved one financially, he authorizes a kill on himself. However, after ordering the kill, he finds out that he was misdiagnosed and must then fend off the army of former colleagues trying to take him out.
Rand Ravich and Simon Kinberg wrote the script, which has recent rewrites by James Coyne.

For a high octane action film starring Vin Diesel as an extreme athlete version of James Bond, "XXX3: Return of Xander Cage" is much more entertaining than it has any right to be. With "Fast X" quickly approaching to help kick-off the summer season, it's clear Diesel has learned that, sometimes, there is safety in numbers. Having a huge cast around you helps take the pressure off of the actor at the top of the call sheet, and Diesel embraced the idea of having a team of some of the best action stars in the world come on board for the third adventure of Xander Cage.
Directed by DJ Caruso, the culmination of one of the most ridiculously entertaining action franchises in recent memory featured a stacked cast that included Donnie Yen, Ruby Rose, Samuel L. Jackson, Kris Wu, Toni Collette, and Thai boxer extraordinaire Tony Jaa as a bleach blonde villain named Talon.

For most of its existence, the Internet Movie Database's Top 250 movies of all time list has been led by Frank Darabont's "The Shawshank Redemption." In this age of online polling, when bots are used to inflate the scores of comic book movies, there is something reassuring about a 142-minute movie about friendship and hope outranking the likes of "The Dark Knight" and "The Avengers." Based on the Stephen King novella from the anthology "Different Seasons," the film boasts a unique, yet confident rhythm that pins the viewer to their seat even if it's their fifth or sixth time through. It certainly helps that people know there's a happy ending coming, but that's still a long haul for a movie set almost entirely in a prison.
The memory of arriving at that perfect runtime proved valuable to Darabont when he found himself struggling with the pace of his third King adaptation,...

Nice vistas and a scenery-chewing Famke Janssen aren’t enough to save this absurd scriptural rehash from movie hell
The latest from evangelical Christian producers Pinnacle Peak – formerly Pure Flix, the money behind the surprisingly enduring God’s Not Dead series – is an adaptation of a Francine Rivers novel that remaps the biblical tale of Hosea on to a western goldrush setting. That synopsis suggests a level of creative imagination and ambition, possibly something like Michael Winterbottom hauling The Mayor of Casterbridge further west for 2000’s The Claim. Yet this movie thinly scatters a parable’s worth of plot across 134 minutes and resembles HBO’s Deadwood recut for Sunday-school purposes: pious, puzzling and punitive, with a sternly wagging finger never far from entering the frame.
Let us give Pinnacle Peak this: they’re getting mildly more sophisticated about delivering The Message. DJ Caruso, a studio director of the mid-00s thrillers Taking Lives and Disturbia,...

Shut In is, as I’m sure you’re aware, the new film from Ben Shapiro and his website The Daily Wire. I was initially impressed by the reviews it was getting. Then I noticed how many of them were from sites that, even if they didn’t call themselves conservative, right wing, or even political, had a very obvious point of view. Comments about “beta males”, Hollywood’s “liberal agenda” and complaints about “woke culture” abounded. So, as with their previous. film, Run Hide Fight, I decided to watch it and see if it was a decent thriller or propaganda.
Jessica is a former meth addict struggling to stay straight and raise her two young children. She also wants to sell the house her grandmother left her, move away and start over.

It’s Peter Parker’s world, we’re just living in it.
After a brief hiatus to let another movie sell a few tickets, “Spider-Man: No Way Home” has unseated “Scream” and reclaimed the top spot on domestic box office charts. Now in its sixth weekend of release, Sony’s comic book sequel added another $14.1 million from 3,705 North American venues this weekend, enough for first place.
It’s rare for any film to secure the No. 1 slot in its sixth outing, though “Spider-Man: No Way Home” didn’t have much in the way of competition. In fact, you would be forgiven if you’d never even heard of this weekend’s two new nationwide releases — Universal’s faith-based romantic drama “Redeeming Love” and the Gravitas Ventures fantasy adventure “The King’s Daughter,” which was filmed eight years ago (and not in a Richard Linklater/ “Boyhood” way). Two new wide releases open this weekend, but we are looking at another weekend dominated byScream and Spider-Man: No Way Home. The face-off between the two franchise films has animated an otherwise quiet January, and while Scream swiftly displaced Spidey from the top spot last weekend with a steady lead at $30 million compared to $20 million, this weekend’s rematch could be a close one. Spider-Man, going into its sixth weekend, has seen drops in recent weeks of around 40%, and another similar drop this weekend would put it around $12 million. That’s right where Scream would be at with a 60% drop, so this weekend’s number one could go in either direction. “Scream,” the hit sequel in the long-running slasher series, will keep terrorizing audiences over the weekend.
Only one movie, Universal’s faith-based romantic drama “Redeeming Love,” is opening nationwide, and the poorly reviewed film, which combines a gold-rush setting with a parable about redemption and the oldest profession, isn’t looking like it’ll put up much of a fight on North American box office charts.
That means “Scream,” which debuted at No. 1 last weekend with $34 million over the extended Martin Luther King Jr. holiday frame, should have no trouble staying victorious. The R-rated horror film is tracking to earn $14 million (give or take) in its second weekend of release, representing a standard 50-55% decline from its traditional three-day opening.
Though “Scream” is expected to retain its leading spot, Sony’s comic book behemoth “Spider-Man: No Way Home” won’t be far behind. Now in its sixth weekend of release,...

Remember Vincent Gallo? After a steady career acting, Gallo really broke out in 1998 with the release of his indie darling, “Buffalo ‘66.” Five years later, he returned with another directorial effort, the controversial drama, “The Brown Bunny.” But since then, he’s been a bit under the radar, with smaller acting roles and lesser-known directorial gigs. Well, it appears the actor-filmmaker is set to star in his most high-profile film in a decade, “Shut In,” but the feature is already bound to be controversial, well before it hits theaters.

Cult and controversial actor-director Vincent Gallo is returning to acting after a near decade-long absence from features.
Quietly, Gallo took on one of the lead roles in D.J. Caruso’s movie thriller Shut In, which is the first original movie from conservative media outlet-turned film producer The Daily Wire, which just revealed the casting.
The project marks Gallo’s first feature acting role since 2013 film The Human Trust. The actor-filmmaker, now 60, is best known for directing controversial indie movie The Brown Bunny (2003) with Chloe Sevigny and Christina Ricci starrer Buffalo 66 (1998). In 2010 he won the best actor prize at the Venice Film Festival for his turn in Jerzy Skolimowski’s well-received movie Essential Killing.
Gallo is also known for making incendiary and provocative comments. His website — described by The Daily Wire as “satirical” — has come under fire for discriminatory passages. As an avowed Trump fan and a political conservative,...

"You have no idea who she is!" Universal Pictures has debuted the second trailer for the film Redeeming Love, a passionate romance story from filmmaker D.J. Caruso and adapted from Francine Rivers' novel of the same name. Redeeming Love is a powerful retelling of the biblical book of Hosea against the backdrop of the California Gold Rush of 1850. Abigail Cowen and Tom Lewis co-star as Angel and Michael, the two young lovers are the center of this story of love against all odds, as they connect despite their differences. Opening in early 2022 in theaters. "Redeeming Love shows there is no brokenness that love can't heal." The ensemble cast also includes Famke Janssen, Logan Marshall-Green, Nina Dobrev, Livi Birch, Eric Dane, Brandon Auret, Jamie-Lee O'Donnell, and Josh Taylor. This looks like a passionate story of true love, but the religious aspects seem overwhelming. Enough to turn me away from wanting to watch this.

This might be stating the obvious, but Vin Diesel loves a franchise. The action star has the ninth installment in the Fast and Furious series in the can and awaiting release, he’ll make his seventh appearance as Groot when Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 arrives in 2023, a Bloodshot sequel was recently announced and he’s also part of James Cameron’s Avatar sequels, and that’s without even mentioning that he’s still developing a fourth Riddick and a second Last Witch Hunter.
xXx: Return of Xander Cage, meanwhile, marked his first time putting on the tattoos and comically oversized fur coat in fifteen years, and it was comfortably the best entry yet. The first movie is so painfully early 2000s that it hurts, while sequel State of the Union swapped out Diesel for Ice Cube and bombed hard.

If next year’s reboot Snake Eyes ends up bombing at the box office, and there’s every chance that it will seeing as it’s a spinoff focusing on a supporting character in a franchise that’s struggled to remain relevant, then Paramount should probably give up on the idea of making G.I. Joe movies.
Stephen Sommers’ The Rise of Cobra is entertaining if only for the fact that it plays exactly like a live-action version of Team America but isn’t in on the joke, while follow-up Retaliation was marginally better for making the wise to decision to both hire Dwayne Johnson and allow director Jon M. Surely, it can’t be long before we see a new addition to “The Film Critic’s Lexicon,” in the chapter devoted to such shorthand similes as “feels like a Hallmark movie,” “resembles an after-school special” and that old standby, “Tarantinoesque.” Chances are very good there will be something on the order of “good enough for lockdown” or “quarantine time-killer,” used to describe the sort of unabashedly derivative and instantly disposable genre fare that might find an audience among undemanding genre enthusiasts in search of something new — anything new — to watch while homebound.
And when that label does indeed appear, don’t be surprised to see a production still from writer-director Christian Sesma’s “Paydirt” alongside it as illustration.
A thoroughly mediocre but sporadically diverting mashup of elements cribbed from the cinemas of Guy Ritchie, Steven Soderbergh and, yes, Quentin Tarantino, “Paydirt” is a crime drama with darkly comical touches...

A spinoff to The Expendables starring Jason Statham’s Lee Christmas is reportedly in the works.
According to a report by The Illuminerdi, the film has been in “active development” for some time, and is not just in the various stages of non-production in which The Expendables 4 seems to have existed for several years. Dave Bautista has been jumping on board a lot of film projects recently! The guy is definitely keeping himself busy and he’s got another new film project lined up. It’s for an action thriller called Killer’s Game and it sounds like it could end up being a wild flick!
Bautista will play a hitman in the story who finds out that he has terminal cancer. So what does he do? He decides to put a hit contract on his own life. But, as you might expect there’s a little twist. He later discovers that the lab made a mistake and he’s actually in perfect health. This puts him in a position where he has to battle an army of assassins who are out to kill him.
The movie is being directed by D.J. Caruso and it’s actually based on a book written by Jay Bonansinga.
