During the First World War, he joined the Royal Army Service Corps. He later joined the Royal Engineers finally where he reached the rank of major. He was sent home in 1917 after being wounded, and was awarded the MC (Military Cross) for his services during World War I. He ended the war as secretary of the Chemical Warfare Committee.
