Yesterday afternoon, the ranks of Oscar voters grew substantially, with some welcome diversity added in for good measure. Yes, the Academy sent out invitations for new membership about 24 hours ago, with 683 names getting the coveted tap on the proverbial shoulder. Again, what made it so interesting to note is that AMPAS seemed to actively seek out women, minorities, and younger artists, hoping to make the demographics of the Academy slightly less centered on older white males. It won’t suddenly change the makeup of the Oscar nominations or upend how the Academy Awards go down next year, but it’s a slow step in the right direction, and that’s worth applauding for sure. As you can see below, in addition to basically all of last year’s Oscar winners, the new members are a diverse slate. Among the names you’ll see in the acting branch now are John Boyega,...

“Introducing the Academy class of 2016,” reads the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences website announcement of its invited new members Wednesday. And while joining that august organization is a singular honor, many say they were surprised to learn of their inclusion — mainly because they hadn’t applied for membership. Traditionally, that’s a laborious process that can take years before you get recommended by peers, vetted by your branch, and finally invited. Every year it’s a shock that someone like, say Tina Fey, IFC’s Arianna Bocco, last year’s Oscar-winner Margaret Sixel (“Mad Max: Fury Road”), or Oscar marketer Lisa Taback, wasn’t already a member.

Filmmaker Fanny Veliz talks about her film Homebound and the struggle to find a place in Hollywood.
Once upon a time, independent filmmaking consisted largely of unestablished filmmakers and actors who struggled to get their cinematic vision in front of the viewing public. Not any more. Today, independent filmmaking has been hijacked by A-list stars who use crowdfunding to raise millions for their movie. Even the Spirit Awards, originally founded to recognize independent filmmaking, are now obsessed with celebrities and films released by big-studio subsidiaries that enjoy mainstream success.
However, there are still true independent filmmakers out there, who still endure the challenges of filmmaking outside of the Hollywood machine. Filmmakers who offer something other than the usual mainstream fare. Filmmakers like Fanny Veliz.
Veliz is an actress whose filmography includes roles in the film Wassup Rockers and the TNT series Southland, but she found her calling behind the camera.

Bye Bye Stevie. It looks like Shane (Alexander Gould) was right: Nancy (Mary-Louise Parker) is bad at everything - including being on the run. We've reached the midway point on Weeds Season 6 and Esteban (Demián Bichir) has finally caught up with Nancy, or at least his two most faithful henchmen, Ignacio (Hemky Madera) and Cesar (Enrique Castillo), have. After capturing Doug (Kevin Nealon), it was only a matter of time before the Mexican mafia caught up with the Botwins. In Weeds Season 6 Episode 5, "Boomerang," Cesar and Ignacio kidnap Shane Botwin. Now, Nancy has no other choice but to come crawling back to Esteban with their son Stevie. Actually, Nancy has another choice - she can simply abandon Shane and continue running. While this may seem like jumping-the-shark for the number one soccer mom of soccer moms, Nancy has proven that her well being comes first. After spotting ...

Weeds Season 6 Episode 4, “Bliss,” showed us two things. First, Cesar (Enrique Castillo) and Ignacio (Hemky Madera) will be closing in on the Botwin family soon. They’ve got Doug (Kevin Nealon) prisoner so it’s only a matter of time before the Botwin’s and the Esteban (Demián Bichir) crime family reconnect. Second, Nancy (Mary-Louise Parker) can’t escape the law or the drug game. We had just saw in Episode 3, “A Yippity Sippity,” a man in the hotel lobby trying to pick up Nancy with an FBI (Federal Bureau of Interested in you) pick up line. Now, in Episode 4, “Bliss,” the cops have stopped Nancy on the way out from a marijuana trimmings pick-up. Is this the end of Nancy’s life on the run? And, how soon will she be forced to reconnect with her husband? We are just at the one-third mark for the season so expect...

Cesar (Enrique Castillo) and Ignacio (Hemky Madera) are officially back on Weeds! We caught a brief glimpse at our favorite Mexican mafia duo, during the closing moments of Season 6 Episode 3, “A Yippity Sippity.” In Episode 4, “Bliss,” the two were back in full form. Ignacio and Cesar tortured Doug (Kevin Nealon) as only they knew how, by threatening to cut his balls off. It was a joy to see Ignacio play bad-crazy cop and Cesar playing the even-worse-monotone cop. Together the two are like Abbott and Costello, if Abbott and Costello were Mexican gangsters. Ignacio and Cesar's reunion in Season 6 is nothing less than comedic perfection. Unfortunately for Doug, not knowing the whereabouts of the Botwin family can result in a quick bullet to the head. Doug makes a call to Andy (Justin Kirk) and leads the two up north. However, he failed to tell his captives that ...

It's possible audiences were looking forward to summer's segue into fall because "Weeds'" sixth season premiere and Showtime's new comedy series "The Big C" aired on August 16. Both comedies are back with brand new episodes on September 13.
First up on "Weeds," Seattle hotel housekeeper Nancy's (Mary-Louise Parker) deal with the shady concierge to sell hash to the guests goes great...until she runs out of product. Will she be able to score some new supply to meet his insatiable demand? A bored Shane (Alexander Gould) lies to his new mommy playgroup and a terrified Doug (Kevin Nealon) lies to Cesar (Enrique Castillo) and Ignacio (Hemky Madera) during a cross-country interrogation about Nancy's whereabouts. Audiences will wonder, after this episode, if the Botwins could be in even more jeopardy.
On "The Big C", Cathy (Laura Linney) does what most people dream of: drains her 401k and goes on a spending spree.

If you've kept up to date with Weeds in Season 6, you have probably been wondering where the heck are Doug (Kevin Nealon) and Celia Hodes (Elizabeth Perkins). The two had been planning their own little drug consortium at the end of Season 5. In Weeds Season 6 episode 3, "A Yippity Sippity," Doug (spoilers if you didn't watch episode 3) finally returned at the end of the episode - only to be nabbed by Ignacio (Hemky Madera) and Cesar (Enrique Castillo). At Comic Con, Mary-Louise Parker had told us that Doug would eventually reconnect with the rest of the family. So we can assume that whatever happens with Cesar and Ignacio will eventually lead Doug back to the Botwins. In this behind-the-scenes video with Kevin Nealon, he discusses the evolution of his character Doug Wilson, and his need to clasp onto the Botwins.

HollywoodNews.com: The “Weeds” season six opener of “Thwack” unfortunately doesn’t live up to its pointed title, however, the good news is that creator Jenji Kohan is finally moving the Botwin family away from the Mexican border after they’ve overstayed the drama there for the last two seasons.
The episode, like many “Weeds” season openers, begins promptly after its finale’s riveting cliffhanger, but the pacing slows. Nancy gathers her chicks, err sons, after young teen Shane kills Pilar, the dastardly political consultant to her Mexican beau Esteban, with a croquet mallet. In season 5, Pilar was grooming Esteban as a candidate in the race for Mexico’s governor. She felt Nancy’s family was an unsavory part of his life. Thus, Pilar threatened to kill Shane and Silas. Feeling his mother’s luck was running out, Shane offed Pilar into the pool.

Showtime has just released a new trailer for Weeds Season 6. If you're looking for a trailer that contains no plot spoilers then turn around now; this trailer will reveal Jenji Kohan's new road map for Weeds. Let's start at the top. Weeds Season 6 takes place directly after the events in the season 5 finale. Shane (Alexander Gould) has just murdered Pilar and Nancy (Mary-Louise Parker) must once again transform into super-mom to save her family. It doesn't look as though Andy (Justin Kirk) will be hunting after Nancy this season. Dr. Audra Kitson (Alanis Morissette) will be returning in season 6. When we last left the couple, Andy had just proposed to Kitson only to abandon her at the hint of danger. Doug (Kevin Nealon) will be coming home to an empty house, except for Esteban (Demián Bichir) and Cesar (Enrique Castillo). Nancy is taking her children north ...

On August 16, Nancy Botwin (Mary-Louise Parker) returns for Weeds season 6. After the shocking events at the end of Weeds Season 5, long time Weeds fans may be in store for a similar story shift to the one that took place after season 3. Now that Shane (Alexander Gould) has killed Pillar, his childhood innocence has been completely demolished by creator Jenji Kohan. Will Shane begin the season in Juvenile Hall or be tried as an adult? Or will Nancy and Esteban (Demián Bichir) find a way to cover up Pillar’s death? That brings up another question. Can Nancy really return to Esteban’s arms after he proved to be coward in standing up to Pillar? We’re hoping Esteban sticks around if only to keep Cesar (Enrique Castillo) and Ignacio (Hemky Madera) on board. The teacher-student relationship between Ignacio and Shane was one of the best character dynamics that came ...

30 Rock -- Something happens when you assemble the right group of actors and give them the right words to say. It's called magic — or, in this case, the cast of 30 Rock. Once again, the ensemble is being recognized for its outstanding work. Obviously, Alec Baldwin, Tina Fey, and the inimitable Tracy Morgan anchor the group. But as with all great casts, the supporting players shouldn't be overlooked — where would Taxi be without Latka and Reverend Jim? Rounding out the noteworthy 30 Rock crew are Jane Krakowski, Scott Adsit, Katrina Bowden, Maulik Pancholy, Lonny Ross, Judah Friedlander, Keith Powell, Kevin Brown, Grizz Chapman, and the hilarious — even when he just stands there grinning — Jack McBrayer. The team magic was never more apparent than in the recent "Christmas Special" episode. As Kenneth (McBrayer) and Tracy (Morgan) listen in the background, Liz Lemon (Fey) delivers toys to a needy family, explaining that she found them through...
