Derek Hough is one of the most celebrated choreographers in Emmy history, and this year he picked up not one but two more nominations. Can he win again? He has two trophies on his mantel already, and to date no one has ever taken home more than three. Scroll down to watch his nominated routines at the bottom of this post.
One of Hough’s nominations is for a pair of exhibition routines he choreographed for “Dancing with the Stars” last fall: a paso doble to “Uccen” and a tap dance to “Let’s Fall in Love for the Night.” He didn’t compete for the Mirror Ball Trophy this past season, but joined as a full-time judge after British panelist Len Goodman was unable to travel back to the US due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Hough won both of his past Emmys for “DWTS,” on his own in 2013 and...

Tony Charmoli, a leading television and Broadway choreographer and director who won three Emmy Awards from the 1950s through 1970s and worked with stars from Mitzi Gaynor and Shirley MacLaine to the costumed characters of Sid & Marty Krofft’s Lidsville and, later, Justin Timberlake and Beyonce, died August 7 at his Hollywood Hills home. He was 99.
“My darling Tony, who passed away peacefully over the weekend, was a wonderful gift in my life, and in the lives of all who knew him,” Gaynor wrote in a tribute posted on Instagram. “He choreographed and directed all of my CBS TV specials, and virtually all of my stage shows and tours between 1973 and 2013. More than that, Tony was a warm and special presence in my life, and a good and true friend who knew my soul.”
Premiering as a Broadway dancer in 1947’s Dear Judas, Charmoli performed in two more productions – Make Mine Manhattan and Love Life,...

“So You Think You Can Dance” contestant-turned-choreographer Travis Wall earned his 10th Emmy nomination this year for the Fox competition series. That puts him within striking distance of not one but two Emmy records. His nominated “Sign of the Times” routine tackled America’s gun violence epidemic in emotional fashion. Watch it above.
See‘So You Think You Can Dance’ judge Mary Murphy’s sad reaction to a cancelled season: ‘We were given the green light. We were all excited’
Before this year’s contenders were announced, Wall had been tied with Derek Hough as the second most nominated choreographer in Emmy history at nine apiece. Now Wall stands alone in second place in the record books. Only one other person has been nominated in this category more times: the legendary Debbie Allen with 11 bids. So Wall just needs one more to share her all-time record.
But that’s not all.

“So You Think You Can Dance” has won Best Choreography at the Emmys 11 times, far more than any other program in history. Two of those awards went to Travis Wall, who is nominated again this year for the ninth time. If he wins his third prize, he’ll tie the all-time record for the most awards won by an individual in this category. And one of his nominated routines, “It Takes a Lot to Know a Man,” was called a “masterpiece” by “Sytycd” judges, so it might be tough to beat. Watch it above.
Performed last summer by “Sytycd” contestant Darius Hickman and all-star Taylor Sieve, the contemporary routine was inspired by Wall’s experience of coming out as gay and the bullying he and others face as a result. Hickman and Sieve swapped traditional gender roles in the routine, which judge Twitch called “a work of art” and Mary Murphy...

“It was a week after Charlottesville and there was a lot of angst in the studio with the dancers and the producers,” explains Travis Wall about the “Strange Fruit” routine he choreographed last summer on “So You Think You Can Dance.” “I felt helpless in a way where I wanted to speak louder than I possibly could.” Now he’s nominated for Best Choreography at the Emmys for the eighth year in a row, for that routine as well as for “Change is Everything,” a duet between “Sytycd” all-star Robert Roldan and season 14 contestant Taylor Sieve. Watch our exclusive video interview with Wall above.
