Oscar-nominated British documentary-maker Tim Hetherington, 40, co-creator of the Sundance-winning documentary Restrepo, was killed covering fighting between Muammar Gaddafi's forces and the opposition.
Chris Hondros, 41, a Us Pulitzer finalist who works for Getty Images, was also killed. His work has appeared in magazines and newspapers around the world. His awards include World Press Photo honours and the Robert Capa gold medal, one of the highest prizes in war photography.
The British photographer Guy Martin, who works for the Panos agency, was critically injured. The fourth man was reported by the New York Times to be photographer Michael Christopher Brown, but his condition was not said to be life-threatening.

Benghazi, Libya (Ahn Entertainment) - The co-director and producer of the Oscar-nominated Afghan war docu-film "Restrepo," Tim Hetherington, was killed in Libya on Wednesday. He was working with other journalists when they were caught in the intense fighting between Muammar Gaddafi's forces and rebels in Misrata.
Pulitzer Prize-nominated photographer Chris Hondros was also killed in the attack. They were working with two other photographers and preparing sandwiches for refugees when they were caught in the battle in Misrata. Hetherington was rushed to a nearby makeshift triage tent next to the Hikma hospital, but was pronounced dead 15 minutes later, according to the Washington Post.
Hondros, who worked with Getty Images, was hit in the forehead with shrapnel that passed through the back of his head. He died later after spending several hours in a coma.

We have terribly sad news to bring today. Details are still coming in, but it has been reported that photo journalists Tim Hetherington and Chris Hondros have been killed in Libya today. Hetherington is best known for co-directing the Oscar-nominated documentary Restrepo. He is pictured above (on the right) with fellow director Sebastian Junger.
