It seems there's a new portmanteau of an actor's name and the word "renaissance" cropping up all the time. In the early 2010s, we had the "McConaissance" and now Oscar winner Brendan Fraser is enjoying his own "Brenaissance." Michael Keaton, however, escaped the dreaded portmanteau when he re-ascended to superstar status with 2014's "Birdman." And he's since maintained that status with memorable turns in everything from the Oscar-winning "Spotlight" to Hulu's excellent chronicle of the opioid epidemic "Dopesick" — even debuting in the MCU as Vulture in "Spider-Man: Homecoming."
Soon, Keaton will be returning as Batman in "The Flash," some 30 years after walking away from the role. He's also gearing up for his directorial debut with "Knox Goes Away", which means that the 71-year-old is still a very busy man.
Now, according to a Deadline report, he'll be starring alongside Mila Kunis in "Goodrich," which looks set to bring Keaton...

Refresh for updates…On Monday, a number of prominent Hollywood figures took to social media to mourn the closure of Arclight Cinemas.
“Well this sucks,” tweeted Knives Out and The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson. “Every single person who worked at the Arclight loved movies, and you felt it. Sending love to every usher, manager and projectionist who rocked that blue shirt and made it such a special place.”
Meanwhile, Barry Jenkins—the Oscar winner behind Moonlight, and upcoming Amazon series The Underground Railroad—simply tweeted, “F**K.”
Writer-director Gina Prince-Bythewood, too, felt the hurt, tweeting, “This is so painful. The Arclight is my go-to. Clean, great sound, assigned stadium seating, great popcorn, usher movie introductions. A true movie-going experience.”
Roland Emmerich, the writer-director behind films including Midway and Independence Day, thanked ArcLight and Pacific Theatres (which is also closing) for the “many wonderful cinematic experiences” they provided.

While Nomadland picked up Best Picture at the Critics Choice a couple of weeks back—a pretty reliable Oscar top prize indicator—at Sunday night’s SAG, it wasn’t even nominated in that category. Instead, that prize went to Aaron Sorkin’s The Trial of the Chicago 7, possibly bolstering its chances at the Academy show on April 25th.
The ‘Best Picture’ prize at SAG is actually awarded to the Best Ensemble Cast in a Motion Picture, and in accepting the award on behalf of the all-star cast, Frank Langella, who played Judge Julius Hoffman, recalled Martin Luther King’s words:
“God give us leaders, said the Reverend Martin Luther King, before he was shot down in cold blood on this very date in 1968—a profound injustice. The Trial of the Chicago 7 began 18 months later, ruled by a corrupt judge—me. Aaron Sorkin was determined to tell their story...

Michael Keaton is already in the history books as being cinema’s greatest Batman, but the actor made history again on Sunday night when he, as a member of the cast of “The Trial of The Chicago 7,” became the first person to ever win three film ensemble Screen Actors Guild Awards. The “Spider-Man: Homecoming” actor previously won as a member of the casts of “Birdman” (2014) and “Spotlight” (2015), both of which went on to win the Oscar for Best Picture.
“The Trial of the Chicago 7,” which received three SAG nominations in total and was leading Gold Derby’s combined odds to win ensemble heading into Sunday’s ceremony, had been the frontrunner all season long. It easily triumphed over the competition, which also included Lee Isaac Chung‘s “Minari,” a semi-autobiographical film about a Korean-American family starting a farm in Arkansas that several of Gold Derby’s Editors actually predicted to win instead.

Updated with full winners list: The Trial of the Chicago 7 won the Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture prize, SAG’s version of Best Picture, at the 27th annual SAG Awards on Sunday night. It was one of 13 awards honoring the year’s best film and TV acting performances.
The late Chadwick Boseman and Viola Davis took the best leading male and female actor in a motion picture honors for Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. In the supporting actor category, Yuh-Jung Youn took the trophy for Minari and Daniel Kaluuya for his role as Fred Hampton in Judas and the Black Messiah.

If The Trial of the Chicago 7 wins the SAG Award for Best Ensemble, it would mark a precedent-setting third time that Michael Keaton has been in the winners circle, previously in eventual Best Picture winners Spotlight and Birdman. Deadline caught up with an actor willing to share the spotlight, hang onto certain things — a Batman reprise in The Flash — and try his first TV series for Hulu, in Dopesick, a drama about the insidious rise of addictive prescription Opioid pain killers. In The Trial of the Chicago 7, Keaton’s turn as former US Attorney General Ramsey Clark is pivotal in showing just how desperate the U.S. government and a federal judge wanted to imprison protesters at the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago. They disregarded Clark’s testimony about his investigation that would have upended the entire trial by pointing the finger at authorities for inciting a riot. Keaton...

Michael Keaton already holds one of the most important titles in the world as The Best Batman in Cinematic History. However, the versatile actor could potentially add another important chapter to his legacy with a win at the Screen Actors Guild Awards on Sunday, April 4. Nominated for Best Film Ensemble for Aaron Sorkin’s “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” Keaton would set a record by becoming the first person to win three film ensemble SAG Awards if the Netflix drama walks away with the top prize. The “Spider-Man: Homecoming” (2017) star previously won as a member of the casts of “Birdman” (2014) and “Spotlight” (2015).

Much like it did at the Golden Globes the day before, Netflix led the way with 30 total nominations. The Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture ensemble race features three Netflix dramas: Da 5 Bloods, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and The Trial of the Chicago 7 along with A24’s Minari and Amazon Studios’ One Night In Miami. Outside of Chicago 7 it is a fully new slate of films from the admittedly apples-to-oranges Best Motion Picture lists set by the Golden Globes on Wednesday.

Over half a century has passed since the events portrayed in the outstanding courtroom drama from Netflix, The Trial of the Chicago 7, took place and, given the current politically charged times, our relationship with authority and authoritarian rule hasn’t gotten any less prickly.
When first envisioned, the protest accompanying the Democratic National Convention in 1968, was intended to be a peaceful protest of the war in Vietnam. But, as most protests of the period went, this one quickly turned violent as police and members of the National Guard used force and violence to quell a supposed riot. The accused organizers of the alleged riot—who included Abbie Hoffman, Jerry Rubin, David Dellinger, Tom Hayden, Rennie Davis, John Froines, Les Weiner, and Bobby Seale—were subsequently charged with conspiracy and inciting a riot, resulting in one of the most infamous trials in American history.

Netflix has just released the first trailer for Aaron Sorkin’s “The Trial of the Chicago 7.”
The almost-two-hour-long drama follows the peaceful demonstration at the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago, which denounced American involvement in the Vietnam War, after it was met with force by members of the Chicago Police Department and National Guard. The demonstration soon evolved into a riot.
The trial lasted six months, as the Nixon administration fired accusations against the protestors, depicting them as criminals bent on crossing state lines to incite riots. The trial’s openly biased judge didn’t allow the jury to hear attorney general Ramsey Clark’s opinion that the police were to blame for the initial violence.
Comedy will be woven into the courtroom drama as well, Sorkin said in an interview with Vanity Fair, though the gravity of the story will still be its main focus.

“The whole world is watching,” we hear chanted repeatedly in the first The Trial of the Chicago 7 trailer. After riots, which may have begun due to the excessive force by the police, overtook the 1968 Democratic National Convention, the federal government tried to charge a group of counterculture activists with conspiracy in one of the most infamous trials in American history. Written and directed by Aaron Sorkin, and featuring an all-star cast headlined by Sacha Baron Cohen, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Mark Rylance, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, the Netflix film merits global consideration. Subscribers will have access to the film starting on Oct. 16

The Trial of The Chicago 7 was initially set to be released in September, but the deal between Paramount and Netflix pushed it back a few weeks.

Streaming giant Netflix has set an Oct. 16 launch date for Aaron Sorkin’s star-studded political drama “The Trial of the Chicago 7” — three weeks before the national election.
Netflix closed the deal on July 1 with Cross Creek Pictures for the drama, which recaps the trial that followed what were intended to be peaceful protests that turned violent at the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago. The organizers of the protest, including Abbie Hoffman, Jerry Rubin, Tom Hayden and Bobby Seale, were charged with conspiracy to incite a riot.
Netlix also released first-look photos on Wednesday on Twitter, noting the “big hair energy” on several of the stars. Mark Strong’s Jerry Rubin character appears to be smoking marijuana in a classroom in one shot.

Yes, it is a bit early to speculate on the state of the 2021 Oscar race, especially given that every day that the coronavirus pandemic rages on puts a damper on any indoor movie theaters actually screening films for academy voters as well as regular ticket buyers. Plus the opening dates of some potential blockbusters like Christopher Nolan‘s time-travel film “Tenet” keep shifting according to the surging cases of Covid-19.
It is likely more films may end up as VOD titles or on streaming platforms for now. But with the announcement that the eligibility period will be extended through February so that productions that had to shut down for safety’s sake can be completed, there is still a chance those featuring big name stars will be at least able to be seen before the 93rd Academy Awards ceremony will be held on April 25, 2021.

The eight actors listed below share a few things in common beyond their profession. They star in films that might be part of the Oscar conversation this year. And while each have been up for a Best Actor trophy previously — some more than once — they haven’t yet claimed an Oscar as leads. While the ongoing pandemic is upending life for everyone, including the entertainment industry and theater chains, it is hard to know exactly how the need for social distancing will affect screenings. Streaming sites and VOD will be more important than ever since the academy has ruled such films eligible for consideration, provided they had originally intended a theatrical rollout for those films.
