Editor’s Note: Spoilers ahead for the ending of “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.”
Quentin Tarantino’s longtime first assistant director William Paul Clark didn’t start out in the pictures — he climbed his way up the ranks after wanting to escape the hollow life of being a stockbroker. Going back to 1994’s “Pulp Fiction,” he’s been the keeper of many of Tarantino’s secrets, and there are many, as the filmmaker is notorious for keeping his scripts under lock and key, going to lengths as great as supervising the investors reading his scripts.

“I can’t imagine making a movie without him.” That’s what Quentin Tarantino said about first assistant director William Paul Clark, whose roots with the writer-director go back to Pulp Fiction. Since then, Clark has worked on nearly every Tarantino picture while also facilitating great work by a wide array of directors from Mark Pellington and Gregg Araki to Terry Zwigoff and Barry Levinson. As an enthusiastic cinephile with an infectious passion for both making and watching movies, Clark seems to have had the time of his life working with Tarantino on last year’s Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood. The Directors Guild of America has nominated Bong Joon Ho for “Parasite,” Sam Mendes for “1917,” Martin Scorsese for “The Irishman,” Quentin Tarantino for “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” and Taika Waititi for “Jojo Rabbit.”
The DGAs are seen as a stepping stone to the Oscars, where the last six best director winners also went home with an Academy Award. Last year, “Roma” filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón scored the feature film directing award, beating out Bradley Cooper for “A Star Is Born,” Spike Lee for “BlacKkKlansman,” Adam McKay for “Vice,” and Peter Farrelly for “Green Book.”
Three female filmmakers — Mati Diop for “Atlantics,” Alma Ha’rel for “Honey Boy” and Melina Matsoukas for “Queen & Slim” — were recognized by the Directors Guild in the first-time feature film award category differing from the Golden Globe Awards and the BAFTA Awards, which both failed to nominate female directors this year.

Hot on the heels of the Producers Guild announcing today (as well as BAFTA last night), the Directors Guild of America has followed. The DGA, along with the aforementioned PGA, combine to be reliable Oscar predictors, so this morning/afternoon is proving to be a vital one, especially as Academy Award voting closes tonight. So, you should be paying close attention to these Guilds. DGA is a strong indicator of Best Director, that goes without saying. Highlighting the lineup for the DGA were the expected names in the main category, such as Bong Joon Ho for Parasite, Sam Mendes for 1917, Martin Scorsese for The Irishman, and Quentin Tarantino for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. The final slot was the one everyone had their eye on, and the Guild went for a surprise. Instead of Noah Baumbach for Marriage Story, Greta Gerwig for Little Women, James Mangold for Ford v Ferrari,...

The Directors Guild of America’s feature-film nominations contain a lineup of acknowledged masters including Martin Scorsese for “The Irishman,” Quentin Tarantino for “Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood,” Sam Mendes for “1917” and Korean auteur Bong Joon Ho for “Parasite.”
Taika Waititi may not have been mentioned in their company when he was best known for making comedies and horror flicks like “What We Do in the Shadows” and “Hunt for the Wilderpeople,” but he joined the ranks of those other directors on Tuesday morning when the Directors Guild nominated him for “Jojo Rabbit.”
But the slate of nominees also means that the DGA will face some of the same questions that were aimed at the Hollywood Foreign Press Association when it nominated an all-male slate of directors for the Golden Globe.

The 19th annual Hollywood Film Awards will be launching the awards campaigns of contenders both big and small, but few are bigger than Quentin Tarantino’s new movie The Hateful Eight. Manifest Destiny #7
Written by Chris Dingess
Art by Matthew Roberts
Colored by Owen Gieni
Published by Image Comics
One great thing about Manifest Destiny #7 is that it assumes new readers will be picking it up. Using the device of Meriwether Lewis’ diary, it introduces the various members of the Lewis and Clark expedition and some of the people they’ve picked up along the way. However, the comic isn’t all exposition and describing characters. There is some beautiful art from Matthew Roberts and Owen Gieni, who show how strange the American West would have been to explorers in the early 19th century. Roberts’ facial work is a little inconsistent with some character seeming like caricature, and others more like actual humans. But Dingess’ script is tight and easy to follow with some bits of humor and moral ambiguity to keep the journey interesting.

Casey Affleck is one of the great American actors of his generation, yet he is still a performer that everyone seems to underestimate. He has made a career of compelling lead turns in films like Gone Baby Gone and The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, and is also a reliable character actor. Last year, he was the biggest scene-stealer of the lacklustre Out of the Furnace, while almost nobody saw him in the evocative western Ain’t Them Bodies Saints, which he was terrific in as well. Now, the actor who has certainly outgrown being referred to as a certain someone’s brother, has signed on to another period western, Lewis and Clark, which will be a six-hour miniseries for HBO.

2012 was such a remarkable year for lesbian and bisexual women that we're already psyched on 2013. Here are 50 reasons why.
1. Gay weddings

With marriage equality becoming a reality in more and more states by the minute, it's going to be a good year for the men-loving-men and women-loving-women who have been waiting to say "I do." Some of them for their whole lives.
2. Homophobia isn't profitable anymore

This fact was learned the hard way by Boy Scouts of America when they lost funding from both the federal government and big businesses because they refused to accept gay scouts and leaders.
3. Kyrsten Sinema

The Arizona Democrat was the first openly bisexual woman to be elected to Congress. She will begin her first term this year.

Lewis (Griffin Dunne) is a history professor at a community college who has been existing at unfathomable depths below his potential for many years. We can only assume that Lewis is stuck in this demeaning position for one of two reasons: lack of confidence or to focus on his magnum opus, an exhaustive 6,000+ page book on William Clark's slave, York. Well, Lewis is about to finally get his big break. With a promising publishing deal -- albeit with a podunk academic press -- in the works, Lewis has been invited to present his research on York at a conference in Portland, Oregon. So, Lewis commences his cross-country drive to Portland with his two teenage kids -- Zoe (Madeleine Martin) and Jack (Devon Graye) -- slouched, unwillingly in his backseat. Divorced, Lewis sees this road trip as an opportunity to bond with his estranged children; at the very least, he...

The Hamptons, New York — The past is never history in Justin Schwarz's The Discoverers, a family-reconciliation tale in which three generations of estranged relatives are forced to stick together on a historical reenactment of the Lewis and Clark expedition. More warm-hearted than funny, Schwarz's feature debut benefits from an intelligent script and sympathetic lead performance by Griffin Dunne, though commercial prospects are modest. Dunne plays Lewis Birch, a history prof whose career is foundering thanks to his inability to complete a mammoth book about York, a slave who belonged to William Clark on the 19th-century expedition

Theo James, the man who played Kemal Pamuk, Lady Mary Crawley's ... momentary lapse in all of her senses on "Downton Abbey," has been cast in Greg Berlanti's CBS drama "Golden Boy," replacing the previously-cast Ryan Phillippe as the male lead, according to TV Line.
Phillippe has reportedly gotten cold feet and dropped out of the project, so James is stepping in as Walter William Clark, an ambitious young police office who becomes a hero after busting a major drug ring, and perhaps starts to rise a little too quickly within the department.
The executive producers of the show are Berlanti ("Brothers & Sisters," "Dirty Sexy Money") and Nicholas Wootton ("NYPD Blue"). The project also stars Chi McBride ("Boston Public," "Pushing Daisies") and Kevin Alejandro ("True Blood").
Do you think the Us viewers are ready for the devastatingly handsome charms of Mr. Pamuk? Tally ho.

Ryan Phillippe’s loss is Theo James‘ gain.
James, an English actor who played David in Underworld: Awakening as well as Lady Mary’s Turkish one-night stand gone bad on Downton Abbey, has replaced Phillippe as the star of Greg Berlanti’s CBS drama pilot Golden Boy.
He’ll play the lead role of Walter William Clark, a young, ambitious police officer who rises quickly within the department — maybe too quickly — after breaking up a major drug ring and becoming a hero. Phillippe was originally cast in the role but dropped out after getting cold feet.

Edward Norton and director John Curran have teamed up once again to develop a new miniseries for HBO that will tell the story of the famous historical Lewis and Clark American expedition.
Norton and Curran previously worked together on a film called The Painted Veil, Curran then went on to direct a film called Stone. Nether one of the films was very successful.
This will make for a great miniseries on HBO! I always thought of how awesome and hard it would have been for this group of explorers to head out into unknown territory not knowing what to expect. What a great adventure that must have been!
Norton recently revealed the news to the Av Club,
…we’re trying to make this big—HBO is doing all these historical miniseries, which I think they’ve done an amazing job with a couple of them. We’re trying to produce...
