Filmmaker Malcolm Clarke, a two-time Best Documentary Short Subject winner, is in production on Wuhan – A Season In Hell, a feature-length documentary about the ground zero of the coronavirus pandemic.
The film will chronicle the initial days of the global pandemic in Wuhan’s ERs and ICUs and the scale of the local outbreak, which saw 42,000 doctors and nurses across China volunteer to travel to Hubei Province to help battle the lethal disease.
Taking up residence in a secure hotel adjacent to the wet market where the virus is alleged to have emanated, Clarke and his team of 20 filmmakers were initially detained and forcibly quarantined by the local government, but ultimately gained exclusive access to the stricken city of Wuhan at the height of the Covid-19 crisis.

Vilifying China is one of Trump’s most hackneyed talking points. In his perennial hunt for an entity to attribute the economic hardships the United States is facing, the Asian superpower is always a prime candidate to take all the blame. Addressing such political mistrust, the feature documentary “Better Angels,” from two-time Oscar-winning director Malcolm Clarke (“Prisoner of Paradise”), argues that it’s only by setting our sights on civilians — referred to here as “accidental diplomats” — building cultural and economic bridges can vitriolic misconceptions about each other be demystified.
Experts and former dignitaries, speaking in classic talking-head interviews, explain that China’s ascent into global leadership is unstoppable, thus it’d be foolish for any country to not foster an alliance with them. Next, they establish that animosity between the American and Chinese governments is clearly hazardous to their interconnected futures, as it prevents productive cooperation. These statements are clear,...

Onscreen and behind the scenes, “In My Eyes” is the product of struggle. Getting the indie-produced, Chinese-made documentary about into the main Golden Goblet competition is therefore a significant triumph.
The film is the first full-length effort by director Han Yi, who spent six years tracking Gao Shengkan as he travelled the world. Blind since age 8, Gao is described as “stubborn, impetuous and intrepid.” Han made contact with Gao, who works as a masseur, after seeing him featured in a TV newscast.
After being abused by parents who regarded him as a burden, Gao tries to put his handicap behind him. Instead he struggles with a battle for personal fulfilment balanced against traditional Chinese societal demands that he take responsibility for the well-being of his entire family.
The film makers worked with a low-to-no budget, with pauses for fundraising extending the production period far beyond what they anticipated. Many of...

Directed by Rory Kennedy, Last Days in Vietnam focuses on the final weeks of the Vietnam War in April 1975 and the Americans who tried to rescue as many South Vietnamese refugees that they could — against White House orders — as the North Vietnamese Army approached Saigon. Kennedy has never been nominated for an Oscar, but her 2012 documentary Ethel, about Ethel Kennedy (Rory’s mother), was nominated for five Emmys. The Academy has announced the new class of invited members for 2014 and, as is typical, many of which are among last year's nominees, which includes Barkhad Abdi, Michael Fassbender, Sally Hawkins, Mads Mikkelsen, Lupita Nyong'o and June Squibb in the Actors branch not to mention curious additions such as Josh Hutcherson, Rob Riggle and Jason Statham, but, okay. The Directors branch adds Jay and Mark Duplass along with Jean-Marc Vallee, Denis Villeneuve and Thomas Vinterberg. I didn't do an immediate tally of male to female additions or other demographics, but at first glance it seems to be a wide spread batch of new additions on all fronts. The Academy is also clearly attempting to aggressively bump up the demographics as this is the second year in a row where they have added a large number of new members, well over the average of 133 new members from 2004 to 2012. As far as...

Michael Fassbender and Lupita Nyong’o of 12 Years a Slave were two of the 271 artists and industry leaders invited to become members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which determines nominations and winners at the annual Oscars. The entire list of Academy membership—which numbers about 6,000—isn’t public information so the annual invitation list is often the best indication of the artists involved in the prestigious awards process. It’s worth noting that invitations need to be accepted in order for artists to become members; some artists, like two-time Best Actor winner Sean Penn, have declined membership over the years.

Pop quiz: What do Chris Rock, Claire Denis, Eddie Vedder and Josh Hutcherson all have in common? Answer: They could all be Oscar voters very soon. The annual Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences invitation list always makes for interesting reading, shedding light on just how large and far-reaching the group's membership is -- or could be, depending on who accepts their invitations. This year, 271 individuals have been asked to join AMPAS, meaning every one of them could contribute to next year's Academy Awards balloting -- and it's as diverse a list as they've ever assembled. Think the Academy consists entirely of fusty retired white dudes? Not if recent Best Original Song nominee Pharrell Williams takes them up on their offer. Think it's all just a Hollywood insiders' game? Not if French arthouse titans Chantal Akerman and Olivier Assayas join the party. It's a list that subverts expectation at every turn.

The 86th annual Academy Awards were really fun to watch. Ellen Degeneres did a fantastic job hosting, and I enjoyed the show she put on. It was also insanely predictable, at least, for me it was. Overall, I'm happy with all of the films that won. My favorite win of the the night was Spike Jonze taking home the Oscar for Best Original screenplay for Her. That was such an amazing movie, and I really wanted it to win that award, but I wasn't sure it would happen. My favorite speech of the night came from Best Actor winner Matthew McConaughey. I was never really a big fan of his, but over the last couple of years he has sure blown up into an amazing actor who has starred in some really incredible films. Then that speech he gave last night won me over, and now I'm on team McConaughey.

London (AP) — The big winners on Oscar night may have been set in the 19th-century American South and outer space, but for many people across the Atlantic, this year's Academy Awards belonged to Britain. Best-picture winner "12 Years a Slave" has a British director — Steve McQueen — and star, Chiwetel Ejiofor, who lost out on an acting Oscar to Matthew McConaughey. "Gravity," which took seven trophies, starred Americans Sandra Bullock and George Clooney and had a Mexican director, Alfonso Cuaron, but it was made in London, using British special effects teams and post-production facilities. "It's very obvious the amazing quality and sophistication of the British film industry made this film happen," said Cuaron, who won a directing Oscar for the 3-D space thriller. Prime Minister David Cameron was quick to praise the British successes, congratulating McQueen in a tweet Monday and calling the wins for "Gravity" ''a tribute to the brilliance of British special effects wizards.

The Oscars honor the best performances on film, but the telecast is all about celebrating the best speeches. Here’s how we called it:
1. Dallas Buyers Club’s Matthew McConaughey, Best Actor
Running over three minutes, the Best Actor acceptance speech was a monument of pure unfiltered McConaughey-ness. He thanked God. He thanked his late father: “I know he’s up there right now, with a big pot of gumbo…he’s probably in his underwear, and he’s got a cold can of Miller Lite, and he’s dancin’.” He went on a very long tangent about how his hero is himself — or rather,...

I ‑‑ just as a film, as a lover of film, the filmmaking, the ‑‑ this heroic story of a man in this inhumane situation trying to get back to his family. I love this film. I love the filmmaking. It’s counterintuitive to the way we’re making films today. It’s a real achievement by Mr. McQueen here. I love this movie. I think it’s important. I think it’s important because it deals with our history that we haven...

Lupita Nyong’o, 12 Years a Slave
Yes! Thank you to the Academy for this incredible recognition. It doesn’t escape me for one moment that so much joy in my life is thanks to so much pain in someone else’s. And so I want to salute the spirit of Patsey for her guidance. And for Solomon, thank you for telling her story and your own. Steve McQueen, you charge everything you fashion with a breath of your own spirit. Thank you so much for putting me in this position. This has been the joy of my life. "The Lady in Number 6: Music Saved My Life" won the Best Documentary Short Subject Oscar at the 86th Academy Awards. Filmmakers Nicholas Reed (left) and Malcolm Clarke (right) took to the stage to accept their award and Clark had this to say:
"When I met Alice Sommer, I was struck by two things. Her extraordinary capacity for joy and her amazing capacity for forgiveness. For those of you who don't know it, the amazing Alice Sommer died one week ago today. She was 110 ... this really is for Alice."
Sommer was a Holocaust survivor whose extraordinary life is featured in the film, as she discusses music, laughter and remaining optimistic in the face of great challenges and hard times.
Reed writes of Sommer on the film's website, "Kids all over the world grow up on superheroes, what we, their parents, must remind them, is documentaries tell stories about 'real superheroes.

Here we are again after the Golden Globes, Mike Fleming and Anita Busch taking on the task of play by play during the most wide-open Oscar race we can remember. Even on the party circuit, industry insiders who usually have a grasp of who’ll walk away with Oscars were evenly torn between Alfonso Cuaron’s 3D masterpiece Gravity and Steve McQueen’s 12 Years A Slave. Then again, there were so many terrific films that got Best Picture nominations, and all of them have at least a puncher’s chance at an upset. Related: Oscars: Pete Hammond’s Absolute Final Predictions That includes American Hustle, where David O Russell co-wrote the Best Original Script nominee with Eric Warren Singer and got tour de force performances and nominations for Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence. Perfs so strong there was no room on the nomination roster for perennial Oscar nominee Jeremy Renner.

The Oscar nominations for the 86th Academy Awards have been announced but who will win and who should win? In a banner year for great movies, 2013 gave us thought-provoking and entertaining experience at the cinema. On Wednesday evening of Oscar Week, the Academy introduced the five films nominated for Best Documentary Feature and Documentary Short Subject at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills.
Host Rob Epstein introduced the event by welcoming the packed house to the “Temple of Films.” Represented by the nominees in both categories, the program included clips from all of the films nominated and panel discussions with filmmakers from each group.
First up were the Documentary Short Subject films.
On hand were nominees Malcolm Clarke and Nicholas Reed, directors of the “The Lady in Number 6: Music Saved My Life,” the story of 109 year old, Alice Herz Sommer, the world’s oldest pianist and Holocaust survivor who shares her story on how to achieve a long and happy life through music, laughter and optimism. It was apparent that both were still deeply affected by this woman who passed away on Sunday.

Netflix has gotten into the business of short documentaries. The company today acquired the rights to "The Lady in Number 6: Music Saved My Life," one of the five films nominated for best documentary, short subject at this year's Academy Awards. Born in Prague in 1903, she grew up in a well-to-do family whose friends included composer and conductor Gustav Mahler and writer Franz Kafka, and she became one of the most celebrated concert pianists in Central Europe. When the Nazis invaded Czechoslovakia, Sommer and her young son were transported to the Theresienstadt concentration camp. She not only survived, she helped others sustain hope...

Alice Herz-Sommer, believed to be the oldest Holocaust survivor, died at age 110 on Sunday, a family member said. There is a single thread running through these shorts, and it is deeply existential and irreducibly personal: How do we save ourselves? I’m “biast” (pro): nothing
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
There is a single thread running through all the Oscar-nominated short documentaries this year, and it is a deceptively simple question with no one simple answer, and not even one simple definition as a question. But it is deeply existential and irreducibly personal: How do we save ourselves? “Saving ourselves” will mean something different to everyone, with a different degree of urgency. It may encompass what we consider to be the core of our beings… or even the mere posing of the question may help us define who we consider ourselves to be. It would be remarkable if any of the definitions and answers in this stories coincided with your own.

The Oscar nominations for the 86th Academy Awards have been announced but who will win and who should win? In a banner year for great movies, 2013 gave us thought-provoking and entertaining experience at the cinema. On Oscar night, Steve McQueen.s .12 Years a Slave. will take home the top prize but Alfonso Cuaron.s .Gravity. will win all the technical awards including Best Director. Quite fitting since one provoked (.12 Years.) and the other entertained (.Gravity.).
And for those who know me, the Academy Awards is my Super Bowl! I.m a nerd when it comes to the Oscars! So I tried to predict the winners to help you in your Oscar pool.
And here's my complete and utterly fearless 2014 Oscar predictions:
Actor in a Leading Role
Christian Bale in .American Hustle.
Bruce Dern in .Nebraska.
Leonardo DiCaprio in .The Wolf of Wall Street.
Chiwetel Ejiofor in .12 Years a Slave.
Matthew McConaughey...
