Australian cricketer Phillip Hughes died Thursday from a "catastrophic" injury to his head, two days after being struck by a delivery during a match. Australia captain Michael Clarke, trying to compose himself several times, read a brief statement on behalf of Hughes' parents, brother and sister at a news conference at St. Vincent's Hospital that was broadcast live around Australia. "We're devastated by the loss of our much-loved son and brother Phillip. Cricket was Phillip's life, and we as a family shared that love of the game with him ... We love you," Clarke read, holding back tears before leaving the room.

Channel 4 aired its one-off documentary Doggy Styling earlier this evening (December 30).
The programme followed British hopeful Su Eld-Weaver and her pet Dobby taking on the Americans in the fascinating, bizarre and somewhat disturbing craze of dog-grooming competitions.
Poor mutts were seen dressed up, trimmed and painted so that they resembled anything from Bert and Ernie to Pinocchio and Tory politician John Selwyn Gummer. Well, not that last one, but we wouldn't have been surprised.
Digital Spy has collected just some of the best reactions to the documentary across Twitter.
Some of these dogs look awful. They should be put down.

Well the first Ashes Test between Australia and England is done and dusted and it must be said that anyone who thought that it would be a replay of the walkover in England earlier this year was given a rude shock. From the third session on the first day it was difficult to say that England won a single session during the Test Match. With the Second Test just under two weeks away, there is time for the Poms to regroup and regather, but there is no doubt that they are coming up against a hardened Australian unit that will go to Adelaide full of confidence and fire after totally dismantling England in four days- despite the heavens conspiring to stop them.
So, what else did we learn about the series from the Gabba Test? Read on…

Alastair Cook lifts the urn as England celebrate their 3-0 series victory over Australia.
You may have been forgiven for thinking the fifth and final Test match at The Oval would be a damp squib, after all the outcome would not affect the series following Australia’s capitulation at Durham, although England were in search of an historic and unprecedented 4-0 Ashes series win.
This was not the case however. From England’s surprise decision to hand all-rounder Chris Woakes and left arm off-spinner Simon Kerrigan their debuts, to an outstanding knock from Shane Watson, this match delivered more than what most expected.
Australia won the toss on the first day and unsurprisingly batted first, with the aforementioned Watson in super touch scoring timely runs ahead of the return series down under which commences on the 21st November.

On the eve of this Ashes series the England selectors took the decision to drop Nick Compton and promote 22-year old Joe Root from the middle order to opener.
Compton had averaged 46.40 during the tour to New Zealand in March, but in the return series on home soil he managed just 39 runs in 4 innings with a highest score of just 16.
Root himself has opened for Yorkshire ever since he made his debut for the county back in 2009.
His first taste at the top of the order for his country was in England’s warm-up game at Chelmsford against Essex where he looked shaky at best, particularly against 20-year old fast bowler Tymal Mills, managing scores of 41 and 26.
I mentioned in a previous article that facing the new ball in International Cricket is a different proposition entirely to that at domestic level and frankly it showed.

Result: Match Drawn
Aus 527-7 dec & 172-7 dec v England 368 & 37-3
England retained the Ashes thanks to a Day 5 washout, drawing the Third Investec Test against Australia at the Emirates Old Trafford in Manchester.
As the gloom drifted towards Old Trafford this morning, the inevitable result of a draw was all but sealed. You would be chastised for thinking any more optimistically, but up until last night, the rain clouds managed to stay away from Manchester. Australia happened to make great use of their time at the vastly changed ground, but it just wasn’t enough to snatch 10 England wickets in the tiniest of dry windows on the fifth day.
Australian captain Michael Clarke had the most perfect of positions just after Tea on Day 4, leading England by 300+ runs with nearly 4 sessions to bowl. With both Ryan Harris and Peter Siddle bowling superbly in the series so far, and with...

First Investec Ashes Test Match, Trent Bridge
England won by 14 runs
One of the best test matches in recent memory, images of Edgbaston in the 2005 Ashes came rushing back. Ebbing and flowing between each session, the spectators at Trent Bridge, Nottingham never really knew who had the upper hand. From Siddle’s opening bowling spell on Day 1 to Ashton Agar’s record breaking 98 on Day 2, it was at first Australia’s game to lose. Then Pietersen (64) and Ian Bell (109) counter attacked brilliantly, soaking up a lot of pressure to leave Australia 311 to win. When Anderson took the ninth wicket before lunch on the last day, it seemed an English victory was inevitable. But as Haddin batted superbly, relying on great support from Agar and Pattinson, the required runs kept getting lower and lower.
Australia looked like they were going to pull off the impossible. With 20 to win at lunch, English heads were faced downwards.

What a Test match! Shades of Edgbaston in 2005 were clearly evident for every player and supporter whether they were present in Nottingham or watching the drama of the last four and a half days unfold on their TV screens.
From questionable umpiring to an outstanding 98 from debutant Ashton Agar, to a phenomenal recovery spearheaded by Ian Bell to a ten-wicket haul from Jimmy Anderson. This match had it all.
I wrote on the eve of this Ashes Series that we shouldn’t overlook the Australians, that they were a side with much to prove and that they would pose a real examination of England’s credentials. If this Test Match is anything to go by then that most certainly will be the case.
It is difficult amid the tension of the final day to recall the events four days ago. It seems an age too that England captain Alastair Cook...

The first three days of this Ashes series so far has produced some outstanding, at times unpredictable cricket and several momentum swingers. From Australia removing England for a measly 215 inside the first day, to a superb spell of bowling that saw Australia fall from 75-4 at the close of the first day’s play to 117-9 – trailing at that stage by 95 – to the incredible record breaking innings by debutant Ashton Agar who played brilliantly for his 98 batting at number 11 which helped Australia to 280 all out and a lead of 65.
England were wobbling too until Ian Bell and Stuart Broad (day three controversy aside when he should have been given out on 37 by umpire Aleem Dar) came to the crease hitting 109 and 65 respectively to guide England to 375 all out just before lunch on day four, setting Australia 311 to claim victory at Trent Bridge.

It is an important summer for both England and Australia. It always is when it comes to Cricket’s greatest rivalry – The Ashes. Australia enter the five match series on the firing line and with several doubts about their credentials both here and back home, while last month Cricket Australia took the drastic decision to fire coach Mickey Arthur cancelling his contract two years early, possibly as a direct consequence of the fact that the former South Africa coach had reportedly lost the dressing room.

Claudia also claims Omarosa called her a ‘stupid b***h’ on the red carpet.
All-Star Celebrity Apprentice alums Omarosa and Claudia Jordan took their on-screen feud to the red carpet Sunday night, trading words moments before the Bet Awards kicked off in Los Angeles.
Omarosa reportedly called Claudia a “stupid b***h,” and when the war of words escalated from there, Omarosa’s mother, 65, stepped in and punched Claudia in the arm, according to TMZ. At that point, security guards hurried over to break up the fight.
Claudia says she filed a police report for assault against Omarosa’s mother after the incident.
Claudia tweeted, “Wow, that awkward moment when you’re assaulted on the red carpet.”
Family Feud: Omarosa Claims ‘Claudia Started It’
Despite Claudia’s claims, Omarosa insists Claudia started the fight by pushing her 65-year-old mother. She says her mother has also filed a police report.

Johnny Cash: Blood, Sweat and Tears (Columbia)
Some of Cash's '60s concept albums were burdened with much too talking between tracks; here the tribute to the American working man gets to mostly stand alone on its musical merits, and shines. Notably, it incluces the top version of the traditional "John Henry"” about the most legendarily heroic working man ever, and the version of "Casey Jones" here is classic as well. Politically and psychologically, Cash was the perfect man for this job.
1968
Byrds: Notorious Byrd Brothers (Columbia)
Sometimes transitional albums, confusing listeners expecting a group's earlier style, are underrated. Not so with this classic. It's true that it didn't sell as well as earlier Byrds LPs, nor did the single from the album chart very high, but for decades Notorious Byrd Brothers has been widely revered, and not just by fans; some critics have even anointed it as the band's best album.

Hot on the heels of news that Machete Kills would arrive this September, the cast for Robert Rodriguez's other fall sequel, Sin City: A Dame to Kill For has just landed a few more new members. The Playlist has word that Juno Temple, Jeremy Piven and Ray Liotta have all taken roles, but details on their characters are being kept under wraps. They join other new cast members like Josh Brolin taking over for Clive Owen as Dwight, Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Johnny, Dennis Haysbert replacing the late Michael Clarke Duncane as Manute and Jamie Chung replacing Devon Aioki as Miho. Yeah, that's quite the impressive cast. Meanwhile, returning cast members include Mickey Rourke as Marv, Jessica Alba as Nancy, Rosario Dawson as Gail and Jaime King as Goldie/Wendy. Still no word on whether Bruce Willis will come back, but we're doubting it at this point. Production is currently...

Battle to hold onto rights
The unexpected entry of stand-in Australian cricket captain George Bailey into Channel Nine’s attempts to hold onto the Australian broadcasting rights has underlined the network faces its toughest battle to regain them after three decades.
Bailey went on the offensive yesterday after Nine’s head of sport Steve Crawley complained about Cricket Australia’s decision to rest batting powerhouse Dave Warner, captain Michael Clarke and dropping Mike Hussey altogether – saying viewers wanted to see them in action.
Bailey took the extraordinary step – for a player – to say Crawley’s comments were an attempt to drive down the price of the next five year’s worth of broadcasting rights being negotiated at the moment.
His attack follows predatory comments by the Ten Network’s chief operating officer Jon Marquard last month that over the first half of this year Ten will vigorously pursue the rights...

"The Hunger Games" might not have been the top grossing or most acclaimed movie of the year, but it was the film that people cared about the most.
Google has released a list of its top trends for 2012, and "The Hunger Games" came out on top of the movies category. It makes sense, too: There was plenty of hype leading up to the March release of "The Hunger Games," with many positing that it could be the next "Twilight." It remains to be seen if the film series will have the same sort of staying power that "The Twilight Saga" did, but we'd argue that it has lived up to its expectations thus far.
We would have assumed that "The Avengers" would have placed higher on the list, but it actually was "Skyfall" that came in second in the top movie trends. Considering how successful that movie has been, it...

“Come on mate”
Cricket Australia has launched an ad campaign ahead of the Vodafone Test Series with Sri Lanka and South Africa, which begins next month.
Taglined ‘United by the moment’, the ad begins with Australian captain Michael Clarke encouraging his bowler with the words, “Come on mate”.
Julian Dunne, Cricket Australia’s senior marketing manager said: “Most fans who love cricket can remember a particular moment that ingratiated them with the game. Cricket has so much history, tradition and many moments that have helped shape our national psyche, from Bradman’s last innings to Warne’s 700th wicket to Michael Clarke’s 329 last season at the Scg. These moments become part of Australian folklore, they are moments you don’t want to miss and they help unite the country.”
Ben Coulson, Ecd at Gpy&R Melbourne, the agency behind the ad, said: “International Test Cricket has a wonderful way of engaging our national pride.

Bruce Willis, Tom Hanks and Michael Bay, who gave Duncan his first break on Armageddon, are among those who have paid heartfelt tribute to the 'gentle giant'
Transformers director Michael Bay has paid a heartfelt tribute to prolific Oscar-nominated character actor Michael Clarke Duncan, who died on Monday at the age of 54.
Bay revealed how he spotted Bay in a gym and gave the 6ft 5", heavily built "gentle giant" his big break in blockbuster disaster movie Armageddon in 1998. The former bodyguard and ditch digger "sucked" when he first arrived on set to play astronaut Bear, but "became the most improved" by the end of filming, wrote Bay on his blog.
"I'm really bummed at losing such a great guy in my life today, Michael Clarke Duncan," said Bay. "I gave him his first big movie role in Armageddon as Bear. We found him in a gym. He cried at the...

American actor best known for his film role as the gentle giant in The Green Mile
Every character actor who has ever been typecast dreams of a role that will transcend the cliches of his image. For Michael Clarke Duncan, who has died aged 54 of complications from a heart attack suffered in July, that breakout role also drew on the hidden truth of his own personality, and the results were spectacular.
Duncan was nominated for an Oscar as best supporting actor in The Green Mile (1999), the film of the Stephen King story in which he plays John Coffey, a gentle giant with extraordinary powers, on death row for raping and killing two young girls. The film's climax, when Coffey, innocent of the crimes but having punished the real killer and an evil guard, goes to the electric chair telling Tom Hanks not to put a hood over his head because...

We take a look back at the work of the much loved star of The Green Mile, who died yesterday
Michael Clarke Duncan's move from bodyguard duties into acting was pretty seamless: lots of bit parts in TV shows and films like Back in Business, Bulworth and The Players Club came his way, all of the "bouncer", "body builder" and "security guard" variety. His big break came after he stopped real-life minding, and scored a role in Jerry Bruckheimer's epic space-disaster movie Armageddon. Though only one of the squad guys, he earned instant immortality with his "you the man" utterance in the final climactic sequence. (It's at 4:48.)
And anyone supposing he was the new Ving Rhames was put to rights in the scene where Duncan began frugging in leopardskin underpants - it's even more effective with the Spanish dubbing.
But it was his subsequent casting in The Green Mile,...

This was a particularly sad week for the musical world. We lost four greats: Chuck Brown, the godfather of Go-Go; country-rock pioneer Doug Dillard; supreme disco diva Donna Summer; and Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, who did more to promote art song than anyone else in the recording era.
Chuck Brown was the most innovative of them, and the funkiest. Born in 1936, he paid his dues as a guitarist in various R&B bands in the '60s. His funk band The Soul Searchers made two classic albums for Sussex, We the People (1972) and Salt of the Earth (1974). "Ashley's Roachclip" on the latter includes a drum break that became one of the sampled breaks in hip-hop; "Blow Your Whistle" from the same LP is also much-sampled.
It's debatable when Go-Go originated as a separate style; originally, it denoted merely party music or a dance club. But in live performance, in Brown's home territory in and around Washington D.

If franchises were baseball teams, then The Fast and the Furious would be the Oakland Athletics. As recounted in last year’s Moneyball, the A’s could never afford to pay superstar salaries. So, using a system known as sabermetrics, they put together a ragtag band of players: aging players who could make base hits, rookies who could read pitches, journeyman has-beens with the uncanny ability to just keep getting on base. None of these dudes was a star. But together, they made a franchise.
I submit to you that last year’s Fast Five is a model for Hollywood sabermetrics.

Michael Clarke is said to be "fanatical" about privacy in his new relationship with Kyly Boldy. The Australian cricket captain, who previously had a high-profile relationship with swimwear model Lara Bingle before their split in 2010, has reportedly changed since meeting Boldy last year. A friend of Clarke told Woman's Day magazine: "People call Kyly the stunning enigma - and the mystery is all Michael's doing. He pushes that, as he's so scarred after the very public and drawn-out break-up with Lara. "He's fanatical now about keeping what he and Kyly have together private for his own sanity. She doesn't mind because she's shy." Describing Bingle as a "party animal", the source also said that Boldy is more "reserved" and "rarely goes out" with Clarke but added that he (more)...
