Former President Donald Trump’s hush money trial reached the end of its second week as the prosecution’s first witness, former National Enquirer publisher David Pecker, returned to the stand on Friday.
Defense attorneys sought to challenge Pecker’s narrative of Trump’s alleged involvement in suppressing “embarrassing” stories in the 2016 campaign.
Throughout the week, Pecker testified that Trump and his then-lawyer, Michael Cohen, had requested him to serve as their “eyes and ears” and uncover whatever salacious stories could harm Trump’s candidacy. Pecker also said that he was asked to publish negative stories about Trump’s opponents. In cross-examination, Trump’s attorney, Emil Bove, aimed to undermine Pecker’s credibility and highlighted instances in which he had mixed up dates and suggested that the passage of time could affect his memory.

There were many memorable cinematic performances that came from actresses in 1999 (Annette Bening in American Beauty, Samantha Morton in Sweet and Lowdown, Julianne Moore in Magnolia). And then there was a truly iconic turn from Reese Witherspoon as Tracy Flick, the terrifying antagonist in Alexander Payne’s sharp political satire, Election.
A cunning, ambitious and oh-so-annoying foil to her teacher and would-be mentor, Omaha-area social studies instructor Jim McAllister (Matthew Broderick), Tracy is at times the worst — for example, when her affair with Mr. McAllister’s best friend is discovered, the teenager has no qualms about abandoning him entirely — and in other moments, Tracy can be the absolute best. At least, she insists on that top slot, no matter what: having the highest grades, getting into the best college, winning a high school election — she’s destined for greatness, which in the time Election takes place means winning the office...

When someone drops an F-bomb on Saturday Night Live, it’s generally pretty newsworthy. But for some viewers, “the ‘Gd’ term” is equally offensive.
That’s the lesson Brooke Germain, an editor at The Nevada Sagebrush, learned when she filed a Freedom of Information Act request to receive all complaints that the FCC had received about SNL going back to the start of 2023. She has since posted the full file to the public records platform MuckRock—and, well, there’s a common theme.
In January of 2023, Colin Jost joked on “Weekend Update” that while Joe Biden and Donald Trump were embroiled in very different classified document scandals, both “made Hillary Clinton want to blow her Goddamn brains out.”
A viewer from Cumming, Georgia, emailed the FCC:
“Please note watching Saturday Night Live 01/21-22/23 over the air on Wxia 11 Atlanta, Ga the ‘Gd’ term was used, and I am not ok with this to begin with.

You can’t please all the people all of the time — even if you’re as popular as Taylor Swift. Having attained a somehow higher level of mega-celebrity with her record-breaking Eras Tour and a closely followed romance with Travis Kelce of the Kansas City Chiefs (who are headed back to the Super Bowl as the defending NFL champs), the singer now faces the perplexing wrath of Maga conspiracy theorists who have decided the league and the relationship are rigged to help Joe Biden’s chances in the 2024 presidential election.

Kelly Clarkson voiced her strong opposition to the recent Arizona Supreme Court abortion ruling reinstating a total ban from 1864 and described it as “insane” and a step backward for the country.
In an interview with former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on her daytime talk show, Clarkson expressed her disbelief at the decision and emphasized the need for progress. “Did you ever think in your lifetime that we would see that happen? It’s just insane to me the thinking that went on in 1864 — it’s a very different world,” Clarkson said.
Clarkson’s remarks came in response to a ruling by Arizona’s Supreme Court, which reinstated an 1864 law that criminalizes abortions. The law allows for a minimal exception only when the life of a pregnant person is at risk. Clinton agreed and called the law “horrifying in every way.”
Clinton said, “I feared it would happen, but I hoped it wouldn’t happen.

Kelly Clarkson shared her own challenging pregnancy stories amid last week’s Arizona Supreme Court decision to allow the state to prepare to enforce a near-total abortion ban based on an 1864 law.
On Monday, Clarkson spoke to former Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton about the Arizona court decision on The Kelly Clarkson Show. Clinton was on to promote Suffs, the Broadway musical about the women’s suffrage movement in America, which the former secretary of state is involved in as a producer.

“Where’s Melania” became a consistent question from the press for some months now; however, it looks like she’s allegedly had a change of heart where Donald Trump’s presidential campaign is concerned.
It seems that she’s now “all in” when it comes to his bid to once again become the next U.S. President, and according to one source, everyone will see her on the campaign trail a lot more.
A “Much Different” Melania Trump
Republican Party insiders revealed to Page Six that since the recent Florida fundraiser, a very different Melania Trump has arrived on the scene.
In fact, the inside source notes that Melania surfaced as the main star at the Republican fundraiser that took place at John Paulson’s $100-million Palm Beach house.
They note that her usual “serious” demeanor had vanished, and Melania seemingly never stopped smiling while being talkative and charming to all guests.

Former President Bill Clinton plans to debut a memoir about his experiences after his presidency, with with publication date set for November 19.
In a statement, the former president said that the memoir, Citizen: My Life After the White House, “is the story of my twenty-three-plus years since leaving the White House, told largely through the stories of other people who changed my life as I tried to help change theirs, of those who supported me, including those I loved and lost, and of the mistakes I made along the way.”
Alfred A. The talent behind the upcoming musical The Ghost of John McCain should not save a front row seat at its premiere for the late senator’s daughter Meghan McCain, as the former cohost of The View and outspoken pundit took to Twitter this week to denounce the forthcoming off-Broadway show, slam its producers and wish it has no success whatsoever.
On Wednesday, it was announced that the show is slated for a fall premiere at New York’s Soho Playhouse. The self-described “serious and satirical musical” was written by Scott Elmegreen with music and lyrics by Drew Fornarola, and its producers include political strategist Jason Rose and Max Fose, a former McCain campaign consultant.
“This is trash,” McCain wrote of the musical, adding that it’s, “Nothing more than a gross cash grab by mediocre desperate people…I hope it bombs.”

British Lord Justice Mark Warby denied former President Donald Trump’s request to appeal the dismissal of his case against Christopher Steele and his company, Orbis Business Intelligence, in a London court.
Steele is a former British spy who worked at the Russia desk for Britain’s secret intelligence service, formally known as MI6. His work on the so-called Steele Dossier alleged salacious details about Trump’s private life and suggested that he worked with Russia to influence the 2016 election.
The ex-president sought permission to appeal the judgment in his data privacy case. In February, Judge Karen Steyn ordered Trump to pay 300,000 British pounds to the Orbis Intelligence Business for their legal costs in bringing a frivolous lawsuit.
Steele told reporters, “We now look forward to receiving the interim payment from Donald Trump and a further costs award once the court has adjudicated the details.”

Clinton went on to make the case for her candidate of choice, Biden, by drawing a snap comparison of the two: “One is old and effective and compassionate, has a heart, and really cares about people. And one is old and has been charged with 91 felonies. I don’t understand why this is even a hard choice,” she said. About six weeks back, Beyoncé announced plans to release a country album titled Act II: Cowboy Carter. “This album has been over five years in the making,” she wrote on Instagram. “It was born out of an experience that I had years ago where I did not feel welcomed…and it was very clear that I wasn’t. But, because of that experience, I did a deeper dive into the history of Country music and studied our rich musical archive.”

This week, Donald Trump publicly declared that New York Attorney General Letitia James should be “looked at” by the authorities, as the former president raged over her office’s sprawling civil fraud case against his family’s business empire.
Behind the scenes, various lawyers in the Maga upper crust — including several close to the former president — have been crafting specific, novel legal schemes that a Justice Department could use to go after the New York prosecutor, three people familiar with the matter tell Rolling Stone. Nearly five decades before Kamala Harris ran for the U.S. presidency in 2020, Shirley Chisholm was the first Black woman to run for president in 1972. She had also made history in 1968 becoming the first Black woman elected to the U.S. congress serving in the House of Representatives. The Democrat’s slogan in her first campaign was “Fighting Shirley-Unbought and Unbossed.” Serving in the House of Representatives until 1983, Chisholm introduced numerous pieces of legislation and was at the forefront of the fight for racial and gender equality and the plight of the poor. She was also the founder of the National Women’s Political Caucus.

I thought I was safe to boldly pronounce my initial 2024 Tony Awards predictions, but then Sufjan Stevens appeared to stomp all over them. As David Buchanan and I convened to discuss where we thought the musical nominations were headed this season, news broke that Off-Broadway’s dreamy dance show “Illinoise” will transfer to the St. James Theatre just in time to compete at this year’s ceremony. The show, based on Stevens’ seminal album, has thrown our Tony predictions into disarray. Watch our full video slugfest above.
“Illinoise” marks the 15th new musical of the 2023-2024 season. That’s more new tuners than any Broadway season since 1975-1976. Theatergoers this year are indeed spoiled with a glut of new shows, but predicting the coveted Best Musical category has become a titanic task.

Donald Trump likes weddings—he really, really likes weddings. As the story goes, in 2010 he was so miffed at not being invited to Chelsea Clinton’s wedding that he tried to crash the party.
Bill and Hillary Clinton were invited to Donald and Melania Trump’s wedding in 2005, and apparently The Donald assumed that he would be on the guest list that included Oprah Winfrey, Steven Spielberg, and Barbra Streisand.

Max’s political dramedy The Girls on the Bus is less about the commonly depicted cutthroat world of politics and more about the unique friendships that can be cultivated in such a high-pressure environment along the way.
The series, based on journalist Amy Chozick’s 2018 memoir Chasing Hillary, follows four female journalists — played by Melissa Benoist, Carla Gugino, Christina Elmore and Natasha Behnam— as they cover the successes and scandals of the presidential primary while on the campaign trail. Though each of the women come from different backgrounds and harbors different opinions from each other on controversial topics and are sometimes in direct competition with each other, they nevertheless find themselves foraging a bond during their travels.
The title of the series, which comes from a singular chapter in Chozick’s book, is a nod to Timothy Crouse’s 1973 book, The Boys on the Bus, which detailed life on the...

Christopher Nolan has been the recent recipient of the Oscar for Best Director and Best Picture for last year’s war biopic Oppenheimer. The film had a dream run during awards season this year, winning the top awards at the ceremony. However, this was Nolan’s second nomination as a director, with his first coming a few years ago for the war drama Dunkirk.
The World War II drama about the evacuation of British soldiers from Dunkirk Beach lost the Best Director Award to Guillermo Del Toro, who won for Shape of Water. Back then, Nolan had reportedly been hopeless about the ceremony and blamed Harvey Weinstein’s aggressive Oscar campaign for Shakespeare in Love for ruining the Oscars.

Don’t hold your breath, but Jimmy Kimmel hasn’t closed the door to having former president Donald Trump on his show.
The late-night comic has been one of Trump’s most visible critics, and has frequently drawn the ire of the former president, who once called him a “wacko last-place loser.”
Still, asked by CNN in an interview published Friday whether he’d welcome Trump back as a guest on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Kimmel replied “I would absolutely have him on the show.”
He went on to say of Trump, “there are a lot of questions I would like to ask him, and I would like to get actual answers. I think most of the interviews that he does don’t require those.”

The office of Former First Lady Michelle Obama has declared that she has no plans to run for president in this year’s election.
On March 5, Obama’s office ended talks of her possible run for president in a bid to silence frequent speculation and wishful thinking about her taking the Democratic nomination from President Joe Biden.
“As former first lady Michelle Obama has expressed several times over the years, she will not be running for president,” Crystal Carson, the communications director of the former first lady’s office, declared in a statement. “Mrs. Obama supports President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris‘ re-election campaign.”
This statement comes after Republicans like Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Georgia), Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and former presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy publicly encouraged the idea that Obama could replace Biden on the ballot.
Many Republicans and conservative commentators fueled speculation that Obama could come in at the last minute,...

Oscar nominations were announced in Los Angeles at 5:30 a.m. on Jan. 23. The backlash began by sunrise. Barbie received eight nominations, including for best picture, but where were individual nods for director Greta Gerwig or star Margot Robbie, the A-list architects who constructed a billion-dollar blockbuster out of an $18 plastic doll that was born in 1959? Barbie fans went berserk online, denouncing the Academy for what they saw as a sexist snub. Breathless press coverage of the controversy dominated the news cycle for days, and even Hillary Clinton weighed in to support her shunned sisters.
By Jan. 26, producer Lynda Obst had heard enough. “I have to write about this misplaced horror,” Obst unloaded on Facebook, offering a history lesson pulled from personal experience, reminding her readers that comedies rarely fare well at the Academy Awards in top categories. Ongoing protests in Berlin against the war in Gaza — a conflict triggered by the Hamas attacks on Israel on Oct. 7 — reached former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and attendees of the Berlin Film Festival’s European Film Market this week following concerted efforts by some international cultural workers to boycott and target German cultural institutions.
Clinton, in town for the Feb. 19 World Forum event organized by Cinema for Peace, was met by loud protests, criticizing U.S. support for Israel, as she began speaking on stage. Cinema for Peace organizers dismissed the action, saying: “Seven out of 1,000 guests expressed a different opinion, not a special occurrence to comment on in a democracy with free speech.”
The event followed a Feb. 18 protest at the EFM, where activists laid down on the front steps of the Gropius Bau drenched in mock blood with a sign reading, “Welcome to the Red Carpet.

“The Girls on the Bus,” Max’s long-in-the-works journalism dramedy series from the producers of “The Flight Attendant,” finally has a trailer.
The series follows four women as they work as embedded political reporters on a presidential campaign trail. There’s idealistic Sadie McCarthy (Melissa Benoist), who works for a respectable newspaper; Grace (Carla Gugino), a veteran reporter whose hard-nosed style gets scoops and makes enemies; Kimberlyn (Christina Elmore), a Black conservative who works for a right-wing news channel; and Lola (Natasha Benham), who thinks traditional journalism is ancient and social media is where it’s at. Though they’re all very competitive and different from each other, they develop a close bond as they work within the pressure cooker environment of the campaign trail.
The cast also includes Scott Foley, Brandon Scott, Griffin Dunne, and Mark Consuelos.

In her Time profile for the magazine’s annual Women of the Year list, published on Wednesday, Greta Gerwig broke her silence on her surprising Barbie Oscars snub for best director, as well as Robbie’s omission from the best actress category.
“Of course I wanted it for Margot,” said Gerwig. “But I’m just happy we all get to be there together.” The filmmaker pointed out that while she and Robbie didn’t get individual nominations, Barbie is up for eight Oscars, including best adapted screenplay and best picture. “A friend’s mom said to me, ‘I can’t believe you didn’t get nominated,” recalled Gerwig. “I said, ‘But I did. I got an Oscar nomination.’ She was like, ‘Oh, that’s wonderful for you!’ I was like, ‘I know!'”
Earlier this month, Robbie commented on the snubs while speaking with the Los Angeles Times, sharing a response similar to Gerwig’s.

Sharon Stone has never been afraid of a risk, fashion-related or otherwise. The Basic Instinct star took a risk when she supported AIDS research in the ’90s. She also faced a huge challenge when her vertebral artery ruptured in 2001, requiring a seven-hour procedure that saved her life.
So, style risks likely don’t seem so serious to Stone these days. This was evident when she appeared at the Cinema For Peace Gala on February 19. The 65-year-old’s outfit was surprising enough that a notable political figure called her out on stage.

Troy, Michigan, is quintessential suburbia: strip malls, banks with drive-thrus, and jewelry stores. Though just 30 minutes outside of Detroit, Troy feels a world away from the Motor City, with its blocks of boarded-up houses and abandoned stores. In a social media post on Valentine’s Day, she shared a photo of herself cozying up to Alex Soros, the son of influential philanthropist and billionaire George Soros.
The Instagram photo, originally posted by Soros, shows the couple snuggled together in a romantic booth adorned with rose petals at a restaurant in Paris. A lively sticker hat wished “Happy Valentine’s Day” hovered atop the image.
Abedin is 47 years old and nearly a decade older than her new boyfriend.
Abedin and Weiner, known for a series of high-profile scandals, ended their marriage seven years ago. Weiner gained national attention in 2011 when he inadvertently tweeted a link to an explicit photo of himself. Although he initially denied any involvement, he eventually admitted he engaged in explicit...

Maybe you’ve heard that conservatives are building a parallel economy. Rather than wait to stage another boycott when the next major beer or sneaker brand inevitably goes “woke,” you establish businesses that, from the outset, explicitly tout traditional values. Don’t like Bud Light anymore? Sounds like you need super-patriotic Ultra Right beer. Can’t stand Nike? Check out Unitus, a sports apparel company that “champions faith, family, and freedom” and sells shoes with Bible references printed on them.
In theory, there’s no product you couldn’t politicize this way,...

Jaka Bizilj, the founder of the Berlin-based Cinema for Peace Foundation which organized the airlift from Russia of opposition activist Alexei Navalny after his poisoning in 2020, has responded to his sudden death in an Arctic Circle jail on Friday.
“Seeing the kind of treatment that they were giving him, I’ve been afraid for months that they were going to kill him,” Bizilj told Deadline.
He suggested the writing had been on wall for Navalny ever since the death of Wagner mercenary group leader Yevgeny Prigozhin in a plane crash in August in the wake of his aborted coup over the summer.
“The Prigozhin case, the uprising, showed that Russia is not as stable as we all believed. After the killing of Prigozhin, Navalny was next on the list… I don’t think Putin saw him as an immediate threat but he was afraid of him in the long run,...

Greta Gerwig’s Barbie and David Fincher’s Fight Club seem worlds apart. While Fight Club is often seen as a celebration of tough-guy attitudes, it’s actually a critique of toxic masculinity. Whereas Barbie, based on the eponymous fashion dolls, is successfully wrapped up in the traditionally girly hue.
The difference between the two films (besides 25 years of cultural change) is mainly how they convey their message. Fight Club ends tragically, with the main character causing chaos in society.
On the contrary, Barbie gives its characters more control and shows a way to find a better sense of self. Yet, both are linked by one main goal—criticizing a society where men hold more power.
