Justice Smith, last seen in Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, and The Holdovers breakout Dominic Sessa are ready to take over the magic stage.
The duo have closed deals to join Barbie actress Ariana Greenblatt in Now You See Me 3, Lionsgate’s latest installment of its heist-with-magicians thrillers.
The trio are the newcomers to the caper, with original cast members Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Isla Fisher, Dave Franco and Morgan Freeman expected to reprise their roles as thieving illusionists.
Plot details are being kept up a sleeve but the new feature will once again delve into the world of the illusionists and the bickering and sneaky quartet known as the Four Horsemen while introducing audiences to a new generation of magicians.
Ruben Fleischer will be sitting in the director’s chair when cameras roll. Eric Warren Singer, Seth Grahame-Smith and Mike Lesslie wrote the script while Bobby Cohen and Alex Kurtzman produce.

The Now You See Me films brought a new twist on the heist movie concept by making the team a group of magicians who were able to use their sleight-of-hand expertise in their plans. Though the films haven’t broken the box office, they have become a humbly successful franchise from Lionsgate, and both movies have been able to showcase an incredible ensemble cast. The director of action films such as this summer’s Fast X, Louis Leterrier, helmed both movies and brought a certain amount of fun with some of the more outrageous logic. However, Ruben Fleischer, who directed the movie’s stars Woody Harrelson and Jesse Eisenberg in the Zombieland movies, will be stepping in the director’s position for the third entry.

Exclusive: Imagine Entertainment chairmen Brian Grazer and Ron Howard have started an innovative offshoot program to supplement the films they make. In an effort to streamline the movie development process, they’ve thinned the ranks of creative executives and will instead empower entrepreneurial producers who ordinarily take their marching orders from those gatekeeper execs.
Imagine has begun a “Pod” system of producer deals that will start with Now You See Me producer Bobby Cohen, and Julie Oh, who in 2016 joined Imagine as New York-based vice presidents of development and will now be a producer there. Imagine’s core movie business will continue to be steered for Grazer and Howard by Karen Lunder, who in August was named Evp and empowered to oversee the projects that Grazer and Howard produce, and Howard directs.
Cohen, Oh, and several others who are in negotiations to join will come under the Imagine umbrella in producer deals.

The screenwriter of the amazing Fargo series on FX, Noah Hawley, is apparently writing one of Universal Picture's monster horror films. There are no details on which monster he'll be working on. In Deadline's report, it just says, “Hawley, while readying another season of Fargo, is separately scripting an untitled project at Universal that will be part of that studio’s classic monster franchise push.”
The studio is hoping to build a cinematic universe with these monsters. Alex Kurtzman and Chris Morgan are currently developing a plan to relaunch the studio’s classic monsters starting with the Mummy, which Jon Spaihts (Prometheus) wrote for Kurtzman to direct. That movie will be released on June 24th, 2016. According to Kurtzman, some of the monsters will get their own movie, but other monsters will appear in other films, as secondary characters. They just need to figure out how to balance that out.

Less than two weeks after Universal Pictures and Imagine Entertainment acquired the rights to adapt author Anne Rice's entire The Vampire Chronicles series, a director is apparently in early talks for the first film.
Well, that didn't take long.
Per The Wrap (who did post a disclaimer that Imagine told them the story is "completely untrue" but nonetheless stands by its story), The Fault in Our Stars' Josh Boone is said individual, and he's being eyed to both write and direct.
The new film won't be a remake of Interview with the Vampire but instead is expected to draw from the second and third books in Rice's series - The Vampire Lestat and The Queen of the Damned - and will likely be faithful to the source material. Hallelujah!
Boone is currently prepping his three-hour adaptation of Stephen King‘s The Stand for Warner Bros. and CBS Films.

Universal Pictures and Imagine Entertainment are planning feature film adaptions of Anne Rice's "The Vampire Chronicles" book series. The deal covers Rice's existing and future novels along with "Tale of the Body Thief," which was adapted into a screenplay by Rice's son, Christopher. Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman ("Star Trek") will produce the project along with Brian Grazer ("24: Live Another Day"). Universal is bringing back some familiar vampires. The studio has picked up the rights to author Anne Rice's novels in The Vampire Chronicles series, which includes Interview with the Vampire, the book that was adapted to the big screen in 1994 and starred Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt.
There's no word on a reboot of Interview With The Vampire, but now that this news is out, a reboot seems inevitable. However, we don't know where the producers will pick up, or begin from.
Brian Grazer will produce along with Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci (who apparently are joining forces again).
Universal and Imagine Entertainment have rights to all existing and future novels in Rice's Vampire Chronicles series, including a screenplay for Tale of the Body Thief, which was written by Rice's son, author Christopher Rice. Other books in the series include Interview with the Vampire and the upcoming Prince Lestat.

Kurtzman is in final negotiations to direct Universal’s reboot of The Mummy. Kurtzman, who with former writing partner Robert Orci wrote some of the biggest franchise players in the last decade, is already producing the movie with Chris Morgan.
Kurtzman and Morgan are weaving together a cinematic universe for Universal based on its movie monsters properties, and The Mummy is due to be one of the first one out of the gate, setting the tone and stage for the rest of the universe.
Plot details are still under wraps, but it was previously indicated that the new Mummy is set in the present and is not a horror play but rather an action-adventure tentpole with horror elements.

First it was Len Wiseman who left Universal's proposed reboot of The Mummy. Then it was Mama director Andres Muschietti who flew the Eqyptian coop. Now, producer Alex Kurtzman is throwing caution to the wind and directing the flick himself.

Comic-Con is a wonderful place, one where exciting scoops can emerge from unexpected places. Attendees at the panel for Alexandre Aja’s upcoming Horns, a Daniel Radcliffe-led horror comedy about a young man trying to solve his girlfriend’s murder (which looks amazing by the way), were treated to plenty of information about that project, but one well-placed question led to an update about an entirely different but also promising project – Universal’s comic adaptation Locke & Key.
Joe Hill, the comic-book artist whose novel served as the inspiration for Horns, delivered the news, confirming that the long-in-development project will in fact be a trilogy and is currently taking shape at Universal Pictures. Albert Torres, the screenwriter of Henry Poole is Here, the upcoming Akira remake and an announced live-action version of Ben 10, has been tapped to adapt the L0cke & Key comic-book series, which Hill co-wrote with Gabriel Rodriguez.

Watching Joe Hill's Locke & Key go from page to screen (big or small) has been nothing short of an exercise in frustration. That being said, some good news has come out of the San Diego Comic-Con regarding the haunting property.
During the Horns panel at the Sdcc Hill revealed that Universal Pictures is currently developing Locke and Key as a trilogy.
Albert Torres has been tapped to write Locke & Key, Universal’s adaptation of the award-winning supernatural comic book series by Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez. Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci, and Bobby Cohen are to produce, as is Ted Adams, the CEO and publisher of Idw Publishing, the company behind the comic.
Locke & Key tells of three siblings who, after the gruesome murder of their father, move to their ancestral home in Maine. They soon discover the house has magical keys that give the bearers a vast array of powers and abilities.

Screenwriting duo Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman have become a Hollywood dream team, penning such blockbusters as Transformers, Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen, Star Trek (2009) and Star Trek Into Darkness. But this twosome has been branching out into producing, and so have been seeking a scribe to adapt the graphic novel Locke & Key. It looks like they've finally found their guy. THR reports Albert Torres has officially been hired to adapt the award-winning comic book series Locke & Key into a thrilling screenplay for Universal. Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman are producing the project along with Bobby Cohen (Now You See Me) and Ted Adams, CEO and publisher of Idw Publishing, which released the comics. Universal is wasting no time in getting their adaptation of Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez’s Locke & Key off the ground. The studio acquired the rights to Idw Publishing’s supernatural graphic novel series last month and this week, they’ve brought on Henry Poole is Here scribe Albert Torres to pen the screenplay.
Torres’ resume is a bit lacking at the moment, though he’s reportedly been busy “tackling heavy-hitting tentpoles.” He worked on a draft of Warner Brothers’ own long-gestating graphic novel adaptation, Akira, as well as scripts for Silver Pictures’ Ben 10 and Paramount’s adaptation of the Dark Horse comic, Hyde.
The story of Locke & Key focuses on teenagers who go to live with their mother in her Massachusetts home after the murder of their father. Once there, the three kids find that the sprawling mansion, called Keyhouse, holds many secrets behind its closed doors, which...

Albert Torres ("Henry Poole is Here") has been selected to pen the latest attempt to adapt Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez's award-winning supernatural comic book series "Locke & Key" at Universal Pictures.
Set in a small Massachusetts village, the story follows a mother and her three children who move into their family estate after her husband is murdered. The vast estate has many areas only accessible by special keys, while a malevolent force within the house lures the husband's killer to the town to finish off the rest of the family.
Originally "Transformers" and "Star Trek" scribes Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman had planned to adapt the property into a single film. That collapsed, leading to a TV series adaptation. A Mark Romanek-directed pilot was produced but didn't get picked up to series.
Then in late 2012 came word that Orci and Kurtzman were planning to turn the property into a film trilogy at Universal.

Locke & Key tried to find life on the small screen, but the adaptation of the acclaimed comic book series never made it past the pilot stage. Fortunately for fans, Universal picked up the rights to the comics not too long ago and now they're getting serious about making the film as they've hired a writer to pen the script.
Locke & Key are among some of my favorite comics. They don't feature any superheroes, but it's a powerful story about dealing with loss, the supernatural, and figuring out what it means to grow up. If you haven't read it, the series from Joe Hill has wrapped up and all six graphic novels are available for purchase. I highly recommend them.
As such, I'm pretty excited to hear that Universal (thanks to THR for the scoop) have hired a writer for their big screen adaptation of the series:
