Production is officially underway for Obsessed, a new, Broadway-bound Diane Warren bio-musical: Producers announced today that licensing deals are set for songs that will be featured in the score, including the Taylor Swift hit “Say Don’t Go.”
A successful developmental workshop was held in New York City last year, directed by three-time Tony Award-winner Kathleen Marshall with a book by two-time Tony winner Joe Dipietro. Michael Cohl and Irit TenHengel, who announced the licensing deals today, formed a partnership to produce the musical on Broadway.
A full production schedule, casting and additional creative team will be announced soon.
Although a list of songs to be included in the musical was not released, producers said they secured rights to Warren-penned songs made famous by, in addition to Swift, Beyonce, Cher, Aerosmith, Toni Braxton, Celine Dion, Whitney Houston, Lady Gaga and more.

Urban legends are mostly just that, the stuff of legends. They can inspire some people to do horrifying things and create urban legends of their own. Very often, these stories get the movie or show treatment whether they hue close to anything factual or not. One of the most famous examples of this urban legend which has a serial killer acting out some of the most famously told tales. Often movies that use the “inspired by” tag don’t have much to do with their source material like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre being merely inspired by Ed Gein. What happens when a legend inspires a movie and then the real story comes out years later?...

Over the years, Keith Richards has relied on a knife as a way to get his point firmly across. At a Rolling Stones concert in the 1980s, he even threatened to go after Donald Trump with the weapon. Richards and the rest of the band were unhappy with Trump’s presence at a concert venue. After their tour producer struggled to get Trump to leave, Richards offered to take matters into his own hands.
Keith Richards made his unhappiness with Donald Trump clear by pulling out a knife
In 1989, The Rolling Stones put on a pay-per-view concert in Atlantic City. Tour producer Michael Cohl booked the Trump Plaza Hotel and Casino as the venue, but the band was uncertain whether they wanted to be associated with Trump. As a result, Cohl made sure to include the stipulation that Trump could not promote the show himself or attend the concert in the contract.

It has been said that success has many fathers, but failure is an orphan. Evidently, Congressman George Santos didn’t understand the memo. He once claimed he was a producer on the troubled Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark Broadway musical, which was notorious for its many troubles and is considered one of Broadway’s biggest flops.
Bloomberg is reporting that Santos claimed his affiliation in 2021 while speaking with potential donors in his run for Congress. The claim was shot down by the show’s lead producer Michael Cohl, who claimed that Santos was never a part of the show, and that his name never appeared in the playbills for it.
The revelation is just the latest fantasy spun by Santos, whose long list of fabulist tales encompasses his alleged education, job history, sexuality, and claims that his mom died on 9/11.

Disgraced Rep. George Santos (R-n.Y.) has been acting out a fantasy life for years, but his latest lie puts him directly in the theater. Sources tell Bloomberg that the Long Island congressman courted donors by falsely claiming he had been a producer on Broadway’s disastrous Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark musical.
The musical, which made its debut in 2011 and ended its run in 2014, was widely considered a major flop. Why did Santos select that particular show as the basis for his imaginary Broadway career? We don’t know.

As Harvey Weinstein finds himself cast in the most anticipated production of the year — his own trial — I watched in horror as actress Annabella Sciorra told her story in technicolor. I can’t say I am surprised, though. It is a page from Harvey’s take no prisoners playbook that I got to see up close when I made two documentary films about him. Canadian filmmaker Barry Avrich, 52, always has had a passion for documentaries about difficult men. He has profiled subjects including Rolling Stones promoter Michael Cohl, writer Dominick Dunne and famed Canadian lawyer Edward Greenspan and now is working on a film about the Bronfmans. "He put his hand on my shoulder with his thumb in my neck," recalls Avrich, "and said, 'The film won't be made, whether I'm alive or dead.' A few years ago, the Broadway production Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark experienced setback after setback on its way to becoming the most expensive Broadway show of all time. Many actors were injured because of the high-flying technical stuntwork needed to pull of the Spider-Man moves, director Julie Taymor was forced out of the project, and the score (by Bono and The Edge, of U2) had to be reworked multiple times.
S2BN Entertainment, the company behind that production as well as the cancelled Marvel Experience live show, is teaming with Hasbro and Chinese company Dmg to finance a live-action event in China called Transformers Live, which will be based on the Hasbro toys and presumably, to some extent, the subsequent Michael Bay movies. A few years ago the Broadway show "Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark" made headlines for all the wrong reasons - notoriously running into production troubles due to the difficulty of its stunts and lots of retooling of its score and book - ultimately becoming one of the most expensive Broadway productions in history.
Now the company behind that, S2BN Entertainment, is teaming with China's Dmg Entertainment to produce a live-action attraction based on the "Transformers" franchise and being performed in China where the films are very popular.

S2BN Entertainment chairman Michael Cohl adds: "Fans will experience intense action, beautiful visual moments, an emotionally engaging story, lots of humor and rousing music."

Justin Matthew Sargent is to begin playing Peter Parker/Spider-Man in the Broadway musical "Spider-Man Turn Off The Dark" Monday night, producers said. Reeve Carney, the show's original Peter Parker, played his final performance Sunday night so he can start shooting the new Showtime drama series "Penny Dreadful." Sargent is best known for his portrayal of bartender-turned-rock-star Drew in Broadway's "Rock of Ages." "We looked for our new lead in Los Angeles and New York. During Justin's rehearsals as the alternate Peter Parker/Spider-Man, we realized this is the guy to take over for Reeve. He is one of Broadway's great rockers," producers Michael Cohl and Jere Harris said in a joint statement Monday. The blockbuster musical "Turn Off the Dark" features music and lyrics by Bono and The Edge of U2, and a book co-written by Julie Taymor, Glen Berger and Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, with direction by Taymor and Philip William McKinley.

The most disappointing thing about awesome conventions and epic theme parks for this Alabama girl is the distance they are from my home. Each one is a fully planned trip. The best thing about The Marvel Experience is that it combines convention and theme park and then travels!
The Marvel Experience is the love child between Marvel and entertainment company, Hero Ventures. The Marvel Experience will feature 3D animated movies and a 4D motion ride all inside a traveling 50,000 square foot dome which will travel to 20-24 cities across the United States and will most certainly make it to a city near you (and me!). Here’s the press release.

Ticket scalping. It's the bane of concertgoers everywhere unless you're the one with the extra money to pay triple face value to get into your favourite band's sold-out show.
Does Michael Cohl, the super-promoter responsible for world tours from the likes of The Rolling Stones, Michael Jackson, U2, The Who and Barbra Streisand ever think scalping will be snuffed out?
"No," Cohl says frankly. "I don't think it'll ever happen. I'm sure they were scalping tickets to the lions and the Christians."
For Cohl, the former chair of concert giant Live Nation and current head of theater and concert promotion company S2BN Entertainment, scalping is the result of a mistake — band's didn't charge the right amount for their tickets the first time around.
"I think that's an accident when they do it [charge an amount that scalpers can exploit]," says Cohl, who'll be doing a celebrity interview as part of Canadian Music Week in Toronto on Friday,...

The lawsuit brought by Julie Taymor against producers of the Broadway musical, Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark, is back on for now. In August, Taymor and producers including Michael Cohl's 8 Legged Productions told a New York federal judge that they had reached a preliminary settlement. The case was then dismissed. But in the months since, the parties have been having trouble putting the final touches on the deal that would resolve dueling claims. Taymor is suing on allegations that the musical continued to make use of her creative contributions even after she left. 8 Legged has brought counterclaims

It seems like things might finally be settling down regarding Broadway’s Spider-man: Turn off the Dark. On Thursday, the Associated Press reported that Julie Taymor and Spider-Man’s producers have reached a tentative settlement in the Taymor lawsuit.
In November Taymor filed a lawsuit against Spider-Man's main producers, Michael Cohl and Jeremiah J. Harris, claiming that her copyrighted script was continuing to make a profit and she was left without proper compensation, despite having been fired from the production in March 2011. In a countersuit, Cohl and Harris said that Taymor did not abide by her contract and “could not and would not do the jobs she was hired to do,” according to the NY Times.
Perhaps the undisclosed settlement will mark a close to the seemingly never-ending saga of this Broadway production. Within just weeks of the musical's premiere in 2010, four performers were injured during the show, including the...

Julie Taymor has settled her blockbuster lawsuit over her exit from Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark, the most expensive production in Broadway history. The Oscar-nominated director sued in November, alleging that producers including Michael Cohl's 8 Legged Productions continued to make use of her creative contributions even after she left. After the lawsuit was filed, 8 Legged brought counterclaims that stated she failed to live up to her obligations on the high-profile show. Attorneys for both sides informed a New York federal court that an agreement had been reached. On Thursday, the judge directed the clerk to

After first saying they had no plans to tour behind their 50th anniversary, it now looks like the Rolling Stones may play at least four shows this year to commemorate the occasion. Billboard is reporting, according to sources, that the Stones will play two shows in November: two at London’s O2 Arena and two at the new Barclays Center in Brooklyn. The paycheck for the four gigs: a whopping $25 million. Richard Branson and Australian promoter Paul Dainty will promote the shows. If that is true, that means that Michael Cohl, the Rolling Stones’ longtime promoter, would not be involved. He...

New York — Producers of Broadway's "Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark" were ordered Thursday to turn over any relevant information to a stuntman who claims he suffered a concussion, whiplash and two holes in his knees while performing as the comic book hero.
Justice Ellen M. Coin of State Supreme Court in Manhattan granted Richard Kobak's request that 8 Legged Productions, the producers of the $75 million show, hand over any memos, emails or any other evidence as he weighs pursuing a negligence lawsuit.
A spokesman for the producers did not immediately return a request for comment.
The stuntman's lawsuit is but one piece of unfinished business from the past that still hangs around a production that has turned the corner and this week welcomed its 1 millionth audience member. The show, which routinely makes more than $1.2 million a week, has become one of Broadway's top earners and won two Tony Award nominations, for best scenic design and costume.

The stuntman, Richard Kobak, claims in a series of papers filed earlier this year in state Supreme Court that he suffered the leg injuries in 2010 while filling in for another injured stuntman at the most expensive show in Broadway history.
He alleges that the rigging he used for the show's aerial acrobatics wasn't recalibrated for him and, as a result, he made 70 hard landings on stage during performances and rehearsals. He says the hard landings created a 1.4-millimeter hole in his right knee and a 9-millimeter hole in his left knee.

New York — Director Julie Taymor has hit back at her former creative partners in "Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark," arguing in court papers that she was the victim of a conspiracy to unfairly push her out of the production and that her one-time collaborators were secretly working on a rival script behind her back.
Taymor's legal team on Friday defended the Tony Award winner against claims in an earlier countersuit from producers, the latest installment in their bitter legal battle over financial rewards for Broadway's most expensive show.
"While secretly conspiring to oust Taymor and use and change her work without pay, the producers also fraudulently induced Taymor to continue working and to diligently make improvements," her team alleges.

Producers behind hit Broadway show Spider-man: Turn Off The Dark have agreed to pay full royalties to former director Julie Taymor.
Taymor, who was fired from the once much-maligned musical last March, maintained she had not been paid in full for her work on the show she helped to develop - and was still owed fees for helping to create the stage spectacular.
Executives at the Stage Directors and Choreographers Society lodged her formal complaint against producers in June and Taymor's lawyers pushed forward with a lawsuit on her behalf in November, alleging the director's creative rights had also been violated.
However, on Thursday both parties reached an undisclosed settlement and bosses at 8 Legged Productions agreed to pay Taymor full royalties from the time she signed up in 2009 until the day she departed in 2011.
Producers Michael Cohl and Jeremiah Harris of 8 Legged Productions, tell the Associated Press, "We are very happy to have reached an amicable compromise with the Sdc that will allow us all to move on."
Additionally, Taymor will be awarded an unspecified sum if the musical, which cost a reported $75 million (£46.9 million) to stage, recoups its original costs.
The show, which features music by U2 stars Bono and The Edge, opened under new direction in June after a number of setbacks and cast injuries.
Taymor's legal battle with the producers will continue on in a different capacity - the director is still seeking half of all profits derived from the sale, licensing or leasing of the rights to the original Spider-Man book.

New York — Producers of "Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark" have agreed to pay the hit Broadway musical's former director Julie Taymor royalties as part of a settlement that ends one chapter in the two sides' bitter legal dispute.
The Stage Directors and Choreographers Society and the show's producers, 8 Legged Productions LLC, announced the deal Thursday. No amount was disclosed.
Under the deal, producers have agreed to pay Taymor full royalties from November 2009 until she was fired in March after years of delays, accidents, critical backlash and ballooning costs which put the show's price tag at $75 million.
The settlement does not end a federal copyright infringement lawsuit brought by Taymor against the producers and a countersuit filed by them against Taymor and her company, Loh Inc. in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York.
