Kate Winslet went all in for her portrayal of war correspondent and photographer Lee Miller.
As the lead star and producer of the eponymous biopic “Lee,” Winslet dedicated herself to embodying Miller’s tenacity both onscreen and off. Oscar winner Winslet personally paid the crew’s salaries for two weeks during the indie film shoot, with the feature being helmed by former collaborator and famed cinematographer Ellen Kuras.
“Lee” charts a pivotal decade in the life of American war correspondent and photographer Lee Miller (Kate Winslet) including her work during WWII. The film shows how Miller lived her life at full-throttle in pursuit of truth, for which she paid a huge personal price, forcing her to confront a traumatic and deeply buried secret from her childhood.

Dev Patel’s bone-crunching action film, Monkey Man, is swinging onto digital platforms faster than Atefeh Safaei can throw a punch. According to the film’s official Twitter account, Monkey Man comes to digital to rent or buy tomorrow, April 23rd! Despite underperforming at the box office with $28M+, Monkey Man is a hit with critics and fans. On Rotten Tomatoes, Patel’s directorial debut is 88% on the Tomatometer, with an 84% Fresh Audience Score.
Competition is fierce at the box office in 2024, with original films struggling to make a dent. Monkey Man opened alongside The First Omen, one of the horror genre’s most well-reviewed films in recent memory. Still, Monkey Man‘s most formidable opponent is Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, which reigns supreme with $485M+. The New Empire opened one week ahead of Monkey Man, gobbling up most of the action-oriented box office. With Monkey Man coming to digital,...

Dev Patel directs, co-writes and stars in Monkey Man, an ultraviolent revenge thriller which was rescued from Netflix and given a theatrical release by producer Jordan Peele. A blend of John Wick-style violence, Indian mythology and a palpable Slumdog atmosphere, it’s an exciting debut for Patel that delivers several pulse-quickening punches and then rips out your arteries for good measure afterwards.
The script makes good use of an unconventional structure, whereby we meet a character known as “Kid” (Patel) as he attempts to execute a poorly thought-out revenge plan against local corrupt cop Rana (Sikandar Kher), in the fictional Indian city of Yatana (effectively standing in for Mumbai). After the attempt fails, Kid is a wanted man, so he hides...

As a movie lover, one of the most wonderful pleasures of this passion is discovering new filmmakers with their own identity, style, and message. There’s almost always something special about a feature film debut from an unknown director, but when it’s from a highly popular actor with an overwhelmingly positive public opinion, the expectations surrounding the movie inevitably change. Dev Patel directs, writes – along with Paul Angunawela and John Collee (Hotel Mumbai) – produces, and stars in Monkey Man, whose story described as “John Wick in Mumbai” was deemed too heavy for the Indian audience by Netflix, prompting Jordan Peele (Get Out) to watch it, buy it, and give it a theatrical release window, so impressed he was.

Kid Cudi is celebrating the release of Dev Patel‘s directorial debut!
The 40-year-old rapper hosted a special screening of the 33-year-old actor’s new movie Monkey Man on Friday evening (April 5) held at AMC The Grove 14 in Los Angeles.
Inspired by the legend of Hanuman, an icon embodying strength and courage, Monkey Man stars Patel as Kid, an anonymous young man who ekes out a meager living in an underground fight club where, night after night, wearing a gorilla mask, he is beaten bloody by more popular fighters for cash. After years of suppressed rage, Kid discovers a way to infiltrate the enclave of the city’s sinister elite. As his childhood trauma boils over, his mysteriously scarred hands unleash an explosive campaign of retribution to settle the score with the men who took everything from him.

History may not look more favorably upon many directorial debuts than Dev Patel’s inaugural feature Monkey Man. The film is both a wholly entertaining action film and an emotional, rewarding tale of revenge and dramatic character growth and development.
The story of Monkey Man concerns itself with the legend of something called Hanuman – which is the embodiment of strength and courage – that is supposed to serve as a vessel of retribution for those unable to achieve so themselves. At this point, the character of Kid (Patel) is introduced as a young man trying to earn a living participating in an illegal fight club wearing a gorilla mask. Through a series of flashbacks, it is revealed that Kid has been scarred by some rather brutal childhood traumas. The result of these incidents initiates and fuels his methodical quest for revenge against the men who destroyed the idyllic life he once enjoyed.

Relatively early in Dev Patel’s shaggy revenge flick Monkey Man, Bobby (Patel) finds himself with a wad of cash in a back alley shack looking for a gun. His grimy arms dealer, unveiling his wares, immediately asks him if he likes John Wick, and offers him a Chinese replica of a gun that Keanu Keeves’s Wick used in one of the films, to which Bobby asks if he has something smaller so that he can be a little closer to his target.
That’s an almost innocuous scene in the grand scheme of Patel’s feature directorial debut, but it’s the perfect encapsulation of the film’s ethos. Where the John Wick films are globe-trotting orgies of brutal, blood-soaked revenge, Monkey Man, as written by Patel, Paul Angunawela, and John Collee, is far more intimate, literally and figuratively. Eschewing sweeping, panoramic wide shots, almost as if it were allergic to them,...

Chicago – Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com appears on “The Morning Mess” with Scott Thompson on Wbgr-fm on April 4th, 2024, reviewing “Monkey Man,” a new film by co-writer, director and lead actor Dev Patel (“Slumdog Millionaire”). In theaters on April 5th.
Rating: 4.0/5.0
Patel portrays Kat, a mysterious man who wrestles in the underground pits of Yatana (a fictional Mumbai). His wrestling character is based on the Hindu god Hanuman, a half monkey/half man protector. His weird persona is not without a plan, as he uses his underground contacts to infiltrate the VIP room in a private club, where he seeks revenge on the corrupt lawman who aided a religious leader in a takeover of his childhood home, brutally killing his mother. Kat continues to train as the Monkey Man to exact a specific revenge.
“Monkey Man” is in theaters on April 5th. Featuring Dev Patel, Pitobash, Sharito Copley, Vipin Sharma and Sikander Kherr.

Dev Patel is Kid in ‘Monkey Man’ (Photo Credit: Akhirwan Nurhaidir © Universal Studios)
Oscar nominee Dev Patel poured his heart and soul into Monkey Man, and his unwavering commitment resulted in a film that masterfully blends adrenaline-pumping action with thought-provoking social commentary. Patel’s feature film directorial debut hits an occasional rough patch, but when it’s firing on all cylinders, it’s incredibly entertaining.
It’s hard to believe that the same Dev Patel who made his breakthrough in Slumdog Millionaire has now become a badass action star. The opening scenes introduce his character, Kid, as a brawler wearing a gorilla mask, his hidden face serving as a punching bag in an underground fight club. Winning isn’t his goal; earning cash is why he is in the ring. The more blood that flows from his beaten body, the higher the payment he receives from the club’s owner,...

Actor Dev Patel, who became a household name with his portrayal of Jamal Malik in Danny Boyle’s Slumdog Millionaire, is now looking forward to his directorial debut, Monkey Man. The actor stars alongside Sharlto Copley, Sobhita Dhulipala, Sikandar Kher, and more, in the action-thriller. He not only directed the movie but has co-written the script with Paul Angunawela and John Collee.
Monkey Man premiered at South by Southwest on March 11, 2024, and opened to a positive response from the critics and the audience. The ones who managed to watch the movie have praised the actor’s hard work and dedication toward the project. But like it is said, success does not come easy, and working on the movie had its own challenges for the actors and the crew. He recently shared how he decided to write the script for the movie himself.

Actor/director Dev Patel opens this two-minute look behind the scenes of Monkey Man by quoting a quote from the film: “The pain will leave you once it’s finished teaching you.” Patel, who made his feature film directing debut with the action thriller, learned that lesson the hard way, breaking his foot and his hand during shooting.
“I poured all of myself into this. Every frame, every beat, every detail…and it’s been a ferocious process making this film,” explained the Oscar nominated actor.
Joining Patel in front of the camera are Sharlto Copley (District 9), Pitobash (Million Dollar Arm), Vipin Sharma (Hotel Mumbai), Sikandar Kher (Aarya), Adithi Kalkunte (Hotel Mumbai), and Sobhita Dhulipala (Made in Heaven). Ashwini Kalsekar (Ek Tha Hero), Makarand Deshpande (Rrr), Jatin Malik, and Zakir Hussain (Duranga) also star.

Universal Pictures has launched a new trailer for Dev Patel’s directorial debut in the action thriller ‘Monkey Man.’
Inspired by the legend of Hanuman, an icon embodying strength and courage, Monkey Man stars Patel as Kid, an anonymous young man who, after the horrific land dispute massacre of his childhood village, was left orphaned on the streets of the fictional city of Yatana. Kid now makes a meagre living in an underground fight club where, night after night, wearing a gorilla mask, he allows himself to be beaten bloody by more popular fighters for cash.
But when, after years of patience and contained rage, Kid discovers a way to infiltrate the enclave of the city’s sinister elite, his childhood trauma boils over, and his scarred hands unleash an explosive campaign of righteous revenge against the men who took everything from him.

Dev Patel’s directorial debut is getting closer… and here’s the trailer for Monkey Man, which is heading to cinemas shortly.
Now that Road House has released (although not in cinemas sadly), we can sate our thirst for bone-crunching action – for a little while at least. However, the next film on the horizon to offer artfully-filmed fisticuffs is Dev Patel’s Monkey Man, and judging by this new trailer, the film is taking no prisoners in its quest to be the most memorable action film of 2024.
Monkey Man is the Lion star’s directorial debut and you have to admire a kind of creative force like Patel: when he wasn’t landing these kind of roles in Hollywood, he simply went out and came up with a story (along with credited screenwriters with Paul Angunawela and John Collee) and then made the film himself. When you see the...

Universal and Jordan Peele’s Monkeypaw Productions are getting set to unleash director Dev Patel’s Monkey Man, which has been earning rave reviews on the festival scene.
Meagan Navarro wrote in her SXSW review for Bloody Disgusting, “Monkey Man presents Dev Patel as a new action hero, a tenacious underdog with a penetrating stare who bites, bludgeons, and stabs his way through bodies to gloriously bloody excess. More excitingly, the film introduces Patel as a strong visionary right out of the gate.”

Dev Patel is hopped up on the visual language and legacy of action cinema in Monkey Man, a walloping sucker punch of a debut feature from the star of Slumdog Millionaire and The Green Knight. Based on Patel’s original story, written alongside Paul Angunawela and John Collee, and produced by Jordan Peele through Monkeypaw Productions, the film is a blood and sweat slicked coming out party not just for a sharp new directorial talent, but a self-styled action star that no one expected.
Set in the fictional city of Yatana, Patel stars as Kid, a haunted young man who barely makes a living in an underground fighting ring. Drawing strength from the tale of Hanuman, the Hindu ape deity his mother told him tales of as a child, Kid dons a gorilla mask and takes falls against more popular fighters to make cash to scrape by. Dev Patel shined with his latest action flick Monkey Man. The British actor has appeared in a few action movies before but Monkey Man has taken the actor to a new height pushing his limit in the movie that revered the style of John Wick.

After watching the trailer of the movie, fans have associated the fight scenes resembling what we all have witnessed in the John Wick franchise, in their stylistic approach anyway. Wild theories have formed surrounding the idea of influence from the Chad Stahelski movies. Patel discards them all.

Dev Patel's feature directorial debut "Monkey Man" hit the ground running with its world premiere at South By Southwest ... but before the movie about an underground brawler hell-bent on revenge became a reality, the actor-turned-filmmaker says it was an idea he was hesitant to bring to life himself. /Film's Ryan Scott is attending SXSW in Austin this week, where Patel spoke about how he went from an actor and co-writer on the project to the man behind the camera.
"I was just trying to find a way to tell this story," Patel explained. "I wanted it out there. Originally, I hired a friend to write it." Paul Angunawela ("Keith Lemon: The Film") and John Collee ("Hotel Mumbai") are both credited as co-writers on the final product, but initially, Patel says two of them worked on it during an intense year-long process. Dev Patel (The Green Knight, Slumdog Millionaire) has much more on his mind than straightforward action homage with his high-octane directorial feature debut, Monkey Man. At the SXSW world premiere, Patel told the enrapt audience that he poured his soul into his hyper-violent actioner, and broke two toes, a hand, tore a shoulder, and battled an eye infection along with all the blood, sweat, and tears getting the film made. The effort shows in every frame.
While the violence onscreen is palpable and painful, it’s not the exquisite fight choreography and thrilling action set pieces that set Monkey Man apart but also its political consciousness, unique narrative structure, and myth-making scale.
Patel, who also produces and co-wrote the screenplay with John Collee and Paul Angunawela, stars as Kid. Inspired by the legend of Hanuman, told to him by his mother as a child, Kid earns money at an underground...

The fictional underground fight club in Dev Patel’s erratic directorial debut feature Monkey Man looks like many others: a dilapidated space crowded with bodies thrusting fistfuls of cash in the air while hurling insults at their least favorite contender. No amount of harsh overhead lighting can shake the shadowy atmosphere of the venue, which is run by a slippery figure (Sharlto Copley), who handles rupees with unnerving greed. Here, in this claustrophobic environment, a young man regularly subjects himself to humiliating defeats.
The fighter, a scrawny guy whose swagger looks put-on, hides his face in a monkey mask. It is an ill-fitting piece of headwear that stays permanently askew. They call him the Kid (Patel) and it soon becomes clear that these beatings are part performance and part masochistic ritual. Memories of his dead mother haunt him, and early flashbacks reveal a tranquil childhood interrupted by gruesome violence. The...

With a premise that is as simple or as complex as you’d like it to be, Monkey Man anoints Dev Patel as a new action director and star. Filmed on location in Mumbai and Indonesia in the height of the Covid pandemic and saved from a Netflix direct-to-streaming deal by Jordan Peele and Universal, this film about reinvention bursts with the same frenetic energy of a Danny Boyle or John Woo picture, with Patel––co-writer, director, star, and sometimes camera operator––throwing everything he has at the screen, and then some.
The plot, on one level, is a simple revenge tale unfolding for reasons revealed at the narrative’s midpoint. Inspired by the Hindu myth of Hanuman Patel’s unnamed Kid embraces this persona in wrestling matches that have left him battle-tested before he undergoes a profound spiritual awakening. So many films in the era of streaming have been relegated to the level of “content,” so it is incredibly exciting to see when a movie once set for streaming is “rescued” for a theatrical release. Filmmaker Jordan Peele saw the new action thriller Monkey Man, the directorial debut of actor Dev Patel, boarding it as a producer and pushing it for a theatrical release. And it’s good that he did, as the fight scenes in this film are top-notch, carrying it through its narrative shortcomings.
Monkey Man tells the story of an impassioned man who decides to take revenge decades after the murder of his mother and destruction of his village by corrupt government officials. Story-wise, this is a relatively straightforward revenge thriller, hitting many of the same beats that virtually every movie in the genre adheres to. However, Patel brings such a vibrant vision to his directorial debut,...

A couple weeks ago, Universal unveiled a trailer for the Dev Patel-directed, Jordan Peele-produced action film Monkey Man, which is set to reach theatres on April 5th. You can check that trailer out in the embed above, and as JoBlo’s own Steve Seigh described it, it’s “a tour-de-force of hand-to-hand combat, Jackie Chan-like environmental manipulation, and visuals that pop with color, blood, and broken bones!” Today, the Motion Picture Association ratings board announced that they have given Monkey Man an R rating… and this announcement comes about four months after the previous time they gave the film an R rating.
The other time the MPA gave Monkey Man an R was on October 25th. At that time, the film was branded with an R for “strong bloody violence throughout, rape, language throughout, sexual content/nudity and drug use”. Today, they revealed that a new cut...
