The CW’s new meta-mystery Cult brings us into a world that most visitors to this website happen to know pretty well: The realm of overly obsessive pop culture fandom. It’s a sometimes fun, sometimes scary, always interesting shadowland where enthusiasm for fantasy takes the most peculiar forms: Ardent ‘shipping, colorful cosplay, mad theorizing by know-it-all bloggers who give themselves fake PhDs and are rarely correct about anything. (Such hacks! Such frauds!) Created by Farscape’s Rockne S. O’Bannon, a scribe with genre smarts who clearly knows much about the benefits and beautiful weirdness of fandom, Cult imagines...

In his novel "Illusions: The Adventures of a Reluctant Messiah," author Richard Bach (best known for "Jonathan Livingston Seagull"), writes, "If you will practice being fictional for a while, you will understand that fictional characters are sometimes more real than people with bodies and heartbeats."
That idea is taken to an extreme in the drama "Cult," premiering Tuesday, Feb. 19, on The CW.
The idea of a story within a story is not new, but in "Cult," there's the "fictional" world, the "real" world and a world that lies somewhere between the two.
When the events and characters of a tale enter the mind of a reader, listener or viewer, they blend with the memories, attitudes and personality already there, creating a version of the story that exists for that person alone.
But some stories, for whatever reason, have a strong influence on many minds. While it's usually benign, there's always...

Chicago – Man, “Cult,” premiering tonight on The CW at 8pm Cst, is a weird, weird show. One can see the pitch that convinced producers to fund this misfire but it was never developed into anything entertaining or believable. Not unlike last week’s disastrous “Cult,” this show can’t decide if it’s camp or meant to be taken seriously, and so ends up in the chasm in between where shows go to die.
Television Rating: 1.5/5.0
Hold tight for this plot description. “Cult” is the name of a show on The CW within a show called “Cult” on The CW. In the fictional show “Cult,” Billy Grimm (Robert Knepper of “Prison Break”) leads a group of followers who conform to his every need and follow his every order. The CW's latest series, "Cult," has drawn its fair share of comparisons to Fox's "The Following," as both shows center around a charismatic leader who compels his followers to commit heinous crimes in his name. While "The Following" explores obsession from the perspective of an FBI agent, "Cult" sees an investigative journalist named Jeff Sefton (Matt Davis) drawn into a web of intrigue after his brother Nate disappears under mysterious circumstances. Jeff learns that the fans of Nate's favorite TV series (a show-within-a-show also called "Cult") may be taking their obsession a little too far.
The concept is unabashedly meta, exploring the ways in which fans engage with their favorite shows -- sometimes in extreme ways. The series will follow Jeff's "real-world" search for his brother, along with Skye (Jessica Lucas), a research assistant for "Cult" who also believes that there may be more to the show and its fans than meets the eye.

It’s February and the month of love, yet there is an interesting trend of spine-chilling thrillers filling-up the TV landscape these days. One of the funnest thrillers of the season is the CW’s new series Cult. While promising that there is nothing supernatural about it, the show offers a refreshing look at how every day things can be scary and terrifying all on their own. Trust me on this: you’ll never look at buttons the same way again.
So here are five reasons why we think Cult will become one of you new favorite TV addictions:
Cool Cast
Helming the quartet of stars featured on the show, Matt Davis (formerly, Alaric on The Vampire Diaries fans) portrays Jeff Sefton, an investigative reporter in search of his missing brother. Cult, the CW’s new series premiering on Feb. 19, has a show-within-a-show premise that might need a little more explaining. Luckily, actress Alona Tal stopped by The Hollywood Reporter’s video lounge to talk about the new mystery drama. “Cult is about a show called Cult that is very successful,” says Tal, 29. Photos: Midseason 2013: TV's Newest Series Within the show, an Lapd detective named Kelly Collins is trying to bring down the leader of the cult named Billy Grimm. Kelly also used to be in the cult. We're back with Part Two of our roundtable interviews for The CW's new series "Cult," which premieres February 19th. Today we have on tap co-stars Jessica Lucas, Robert Knepper, and Alona Tal.
Lucas, who plays Skye Yarrow, provided some information on her character and the show. "I play Skye, a research assistant on the television show," Lucas said. "She's the one who first starts to notice that weird things are happening with the fans of the show. She grew up with a journalist father so she's very inquisitive by nature, refusing to take no for an answer, and then she meets Jeff (Matt Davis); when Jeff's brother disappears, that gives her a reason to look deeper into the show. She's got a partner in crime to help her do that."
Thus far, Skye has not developed a ton of backstory, but that is certainly coming. "I think there's a lot...

Cult, The CW's mid-season television offering, begins February 19th and the network has released a lengthy promo as a sneak peek. The show - which embraces a "meta" approach - stars Matthew Davis and Jessica Lucas.
Here is how The CW describes it: Investigative journalist Jeff Sefton has learned to laugh off his brother Nate's relentless string of obsessions, especially his latest rant that a hit TV show intends to harm him. However, when his brother mysteriously disappears, Jeff takes Nate's paranoia seriously, and in the process uncovers the dark underworld of the TV show "Cult" and its rabid fans.
The only person who seems willing to help Jeff with his investigation is Skye, a young research assistant for "Cult," who has also started to grow suspicious of the increasingly dark happenings surrounding the show. The fictitious show, centered on the cat-and-mouse game between charismatic cult leader Billy Grimm and Lapd detective Kelly Collins,...

The CW has finally announced the premiere date for "Cult": Feb. 19, 2013.
The creepy, show-within-a-show suspense thriller will replace Emily Owens, M.D. , in the Tuesday 9 p.m. time slot. The CW recently announced that the freshman medical dramedy starring Mamie Gummer would end after its 13th episode.
"Cult" stars Matt Davis ("The Vampire Diaries") as Jeff Sefton, a reporter investigating the mysterious disappearance of his brother, one of many obsessive fans of the interactive TV series "Cult." It's very dark and very meta, with many tongue-in-cheek references to the, um, devoted fans of other CW series. "Cult's" fans, however, take their devotion to deadly extremes.
Sefton partners up with the show's research assistant, Skye Yarrow (Jessica Lucas), to delve into the dark underworld of "Cult." Also starring are Robert Knepper ("Prison Break") as fictional cult leader Billy Grimm/actor Roger Reeves and Alona Tal ("Supernatural") as fictional Lapd...

Don't worry: Matt Davis won't be gone from The CW for too long. Although he's done on "The Vampire Diaries," the actor is heading back to the network at midseason for the creepy-sounding new drama, "Cult." Joining him is AnnaSophia Robb, who stars in the "Sex and the City" prequel "The Carrie Diaries." Both shows will hit The CW sometime in early 2013.
Unfortunately, we haven't seen any photos of Davis in his new show, but we do have a shot of Robert Knepper as Billy Grimm/Roger Reeves and Alona Tal as Kelly/Marti in the new series. The CW has also released two new photos from "The Carrie Diaries" -- the first shot of the pilot was released back in March.

With the goofy snooze-fest known as "The Secret Circle" being put out to pasture (along with our guilty pleasure "Ringer"), The CW network has picked up two new genre-themed television shows to get your ghost. Now if only they can move "Supernatural" back to Thursday.
Deadline reports that The CW has picked up "Cult" from Warner Bros. TV and "Beauty and the Beast" from CBS Television Studios.
"Cult" centers on Skye (Jessica Lucas), an inquisitive young production assistant on a wildly popular television show called Cult. After a rash of disappearances and a likely murder, she joins Jeff (Matt Davis), a journalist blogger whose brother was among those gone missing, in investigating the rabid fans of the series who might be re-creating crimes seen on the program in real life. In the show, star Andrew Leeds' character is named Kyle and is the network Creative VP recently assigned to Cult.
