Weekend box office looks incredible for Hunger Games. After a huge take of over $19.7 million from Thursday night midnight showings alone, Lionsgate's winning Hunger Games added another $48.5 million on Friday, turning the day's total cume to over $68.2 million. Most impressive. This is now Lionsgate's sixth highest grossing film ever after just one day, but wait for Saturday and Sunday and you're likely to see it almost make $150 million come weekend box office estimates. This is the biggest March opening ever and also the largest for a film which isn't a sequel. Gary Ross directs, as well as adapting the script with novel writer Suzanne Collins...

Not everyone loves "The Hunger Games." For Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson and Elizabeth Banks, that might seem like a problem, but Banks is here to set the record straight. "[People ask] 'Are you worried about the haters, these people that don't like us?'" Banks said during Moviefone's special "Hunger Games" unscripted session. "I feel like all of us have to be like, 'We committed.' Suzanne Collins wrote the book, and she's happy. So we're happy." Or as Josh Hutcherson responded: "Haters gonna hate." Watch the clip above to find out more -- including what Banks thought when she was cast as Effie Trinkett -- and head here for all things "Hunger Games." Photos:...

We never really learn what catastrophic event occurred that led to the restructuring of North America into Panem, the post apocalyptic continent that is the setting for Suzanne Collins‘ Hunger Games trilogy. For that matter we aren’t really that certain what Panem looks like, and only have a vague idea of how the nation is set up.

For my money, “The Host” is an even better novel than “Twilight.” But the important thing here is author Stephenie Meyer’s money–and she managed to turn both books into huge bestsellers.

Josh Hutcherson has said that he "fell in love" with his Hunger Games character Peeta. In an interview with MTV News, Hutcherson revealed that he was immediately taken with Peeta and that the role resonated with the type of person he is. He said: "For me, Peeta is an amazing character. I fell in love with him right away. What's crazy is that I've never seen a character that's so much of who I am as a person. "I just feel like his self-deprecating humour, his outlook on life, how he doesn't want things to change him - that's really part of who I am as a person. The actor, who won the lead role in the on-screen version of Suzanne Collins's dystopian trilogy alongside Jennifer Lawrence and Liam Hemsworth, said that it was important to remain unaffected by fame. A pre-title scroll, set to a classical thundering score, quickly establishes what seems to be a dystopian alternate-universe-Japan. The nation collapsed leaving 15 percent unemployed and 800,000 students boycotting school. The government passed something called the Millennium Educational Reform Act, which apparently provides for a class of ninth-graders to be chosen each year and pitted against one another on a remote island for three days. Each student is given a bag with a randomly selected weapon and a few rations of food and water and sent off to kill each other in a no-holds-barred game to the death. With 48 contestants, only one will go home alive. Yes, this has been often noted as the “original Hunger Games”; whether or not the author of that series (Suzanne Collins) borrowed heavily from Kinji Fukasaku’s near masterpiece or the novel by Koushun Takami...

Kudos must be given to Lawrence who successfully embodies the female protagonist of the movie and to writer/director Gary Ross for infusing the film with enough heft and style. The result is an entertaining vision of a dystopian future.

Adaptations of young adult literature illustrate the divide between what we feel comfortable letting young audiences read about and what we feel comfortable letting them watch. Gus Van Sant’s excellent adaptation of Blake Nelson’s young adult novel, for instance, received an R rating due to a violent image, shutting out a lot of potential viewers before they even got a chance to see it. Suzanne Collins’ grisly, dystopian Hunger Games trilogy was always going to be a tough squeeze into the restrictions of the PG-13 rating, but it looks like Gary Ross found a way. U.K. viewers ...

Taylor Swift's other "Hunger Games" track, "Eyes Open," has hit the 'Net nearly a week before the official soundtrack drops.
Whereas "Safe & Sound" is sparse and gloomy, Swift's second "Hunger Games" soundtrack contribution is more epic and upbeat, at least musically. The lyrics still touch on many of the darker themes of the film, meaning that she sings about the loss of innocence and the need to stay strong in the face of adversity.
"Yesterday we were just children/ Playing soldier just pretending/ Dreaming dreams with happy endings," she sings on the track, which has been posted on Perez Hilton's website. Wes Bentley looks fit and happy; he's prone to laughter and slightly embarrassing admissions;such as the fact that he's been mistaken for Tobey Maguire so many times, he's even signed the other actor's autograph on occasion. It's good to see Bentley back on the big screen, his bright eyes full of mischievous glee as gamesmaker Seneca Crane in the hotly anticipated adaptation of Suzanne Collins' bestseller "The Hunger Games." After bursting onto the scene in 1999 as sensitive teen Ricky Fitts in "American Beauty," Bentley appeared to be the next big thing. Instead, he succumbed to a drug and alcohol addiction that left him broke and virtually unemployable. In 2009, Bentley got sober and began looking for work. Los Angeles, California (X17online) - Seven seconds of footage from Hunger Games has been cut from the UK version of the film in order to achieve a PG-13 rating. The movie, starring Jennifer Lawrence, Liam Hemsworth, and Josh Hutcherson, was originally slated to receive a 15 certificate, which is the equivalent of an R rating, so four scenes of violence and injuries were cut out. After Lionsgate made the adjustments, it was rated 12A, which signifies 12-year-olds rather than 13-year-olds can go see it without supervision. The rating will open the film up to a much larger movie-going public upon its release on March 23. The consumer advice tag states: "Contains intense threat, moderate violence and occasional gory moments." Hunger Games is based on the novel by Suzanne Collins - the first in a trilogy - centered on a group of teens struggling to survive a televised game show where only...

Other than the atypical black carpet, last night’s Hunger Games film premiere at L.A.’s Nokia Theatre was a very by-the-book affair. No, it wasn’t boring. With Oscar nominees Jennifer Lawrence, Stanley Tucci, and Woody Harrelson, rising stars Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth, plus the sparkling Elizabeth Banks and Wes Bentley walking the sleek carpet — not to mention hordes of screaming, sign-wielding fans — the premiere was an extraordinary, this-is-really-real moment. It was also a chance to pay homage to author Suzanne Collins, whose thrilling mix of action and emotion elevated a young adult novel to a global phenomenon.

Despite a few impressive looking trailers and clips, many on Cbm don't seem to have high hopes for Gary Ross' adaptation of the wildly popular first novel in the Hunger Games series by Suzanne Collins. But if there are worries that we are looking at another Twilight type disaster, maybe these very positive first reactions will raise your expectations a little.. I asked a few of them how they thought the movie would go over with those that haven't read the book (I haven't myself) and I was assured that it wouldn't make a difference. Of course we won't have a proper sense of the critical reactions until the full reviews hit, and remember John Carter also received the same initial good word. Now while I personally happened to enjoy that movie a lot, those early reactions ultimately proved not to be an accurate account of the final critical consensus.

It’s when Katniss presents her skills to the Gamemakers, who will give her a score designed to entice or deter sponsors for the tributes going into the games. Here’s how Suzanne Collins describes it:
“It’s excellent shooting. I turn to the Gamemakers. A few are nodding in approval, but the majority of them are fixated on a roast pig that has just arrived at their banquet table. … Suddenly I am furious, that with my life on the line, they don’t even have the decency to pay attention to me. Now it's time to get into his thoughts on the impact of Suzanne Collins' best-selling trilogy as a whole and what he thought about reading them for the first time knowing he might be bringing Crane to life on the big screen.
"I think they're fantastic novels. She's a great writer, very poetic at times, and I love that," Bentley told MTV News. "What struck me first was that it was politically sophisticated, a level at which you don't see in adult novels. I also found it very exciting,...

If you.ve read Suzanne Collins. Hunger Games series, or have glimpsed some of the Capitol residents in the trailer in their outlandish costumes and make-up, then you know that height of fashion among the Capitol elite seems to be elaborate hair styles and colors, and colorful make-up, which is worn by men and women alike. Color is glamour, and that adds a nice bit of contrast between the wealthy Capitol and the struggling, working-class districts. This line is drawn nicely in the books and based on what we.ve seen so far, it looks like it will come through just as well in the film. Some cool looking flash ads have made their way online (via HungerGamesTrilogy.Net) and all three of them feature characters from the film in ads that showcase personal grooming items. The first has Cinna (Lenny Kravitz) showing off Liquid Skyliner, the .Official eyeliner of...

For our fellow "Hunger Games" fans who obsess over Suzanne Collins' brilliant books and their upcoming film adaptations as much as we do, there are so many things to love about the story that it's difficult to pick just one or two (or five) things we're looking forward to seeing when the movie opens March 23. But two of the most intriguing elements involved in the book-to-movie translation are what the Capitol will look like and how star Jennifer Lawrence will sound singing Rue's Lullaby.
MTV News was lucky enough to get a few hints about those specific topics during our recent chat with Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson, both of...

Elizabeth Banks has claimed that the Hunger Games movie is a "very faithful adaptation" of the popular book series. The actress, who plays Effie Trinket, insisted that fans of Suzanne Collins's 2008 novel will not be disappointed with the big screen version. "Everything that's in the book is in the movie," she told E!. "We didn't take any liberties. It's a very faithful adaptation." Banks added that she expects audiences to be startled by the emotional depth of the film. "I think you're going to be surprised how moving it is," she predicted. "It's extremely moving." The Man on a Ledge star previously said that she felt "gratified" (more)...

The odds are in your favor today as you prepare, not to fight to the death in a televised winner-take-all tournament, but instead to watch the newest and probably the hottest Hunger Games trailer yet! I must warn you, if you about to enjoy this video with a hard core Hunger Games fan, you might want to stand back and give he or she some room. They might start jumping up and down madly, or burst into tears. Yes, it’s that good!
The danger of the Games is finally brought to the forefront in this new trailer. You can see the madness of day one in the arena when all the tributes are loosed at the same time. You can see the training period as Katniss and Peeta watch the careers, who will surely kill them. There are even tender shots of Gale.

Lenny Kravitz has revealed that he was immediately drawn to his Hunger Games character Cinna. The 'American Woman' rocker revealed that while he has been offered several roles in recent years, it was not until he read the script for the adaptation of Suzanne Collins' young adult dystopian trilogy that he decided to return to acting. "I thought it was really good storytelling. I'm very much into stories. The character was interesting. I like [director Gary Ross's] previous work. And I said, 'Yeah, let's go,'" Kravitz recalled to Rolling Stone. "[Cinna]'s very streamlined, he's very quiet. He knows what he's doing. He's confident. He's got a big heart. I just liked the way he moved - very smooth." Kravitz (more)...

Rolling Stone has just posted the above brand-new Hunger Games photo, featuring Cinna and Katniss’ last moment together before she enters the arena, making us almost Kristen-Bell-sloth-level excited that there’s only 50 days (and a few hours) before the movie is out. It’s the kind of quiet scene that could be screwed up in a movie adaptation that’s filled with all that action and drama, but we think Gary Ross, Jennifer Lawrence and Lenny Kravitz just might get it right. Especially when we hear Lenny describe his character to Rs: “He’s very streamlined, he’s very quiet. He knows what he’s doing. He’s confident. He’s got a big heart. I just liked the way he moved — very smooth.”
The rocker reveals that he took the role because he admired Suzanne Collins’ storytelling in the book. “I’m very much into stories. The character was interesting.

Let the "Hunger Games" parodies begin.
Harvard Lampoon is one of the first out of the gate with a mock trailer to the non-existent movie adaptation of their upcoming book (got all that?), "The Hunger Pains," which chronicles the plight of inept heroine Kantkiss (not "Katpiss") Neverclean, a young girl living in the telemarketing district of Peaceland who is forced to compete in the violent annual Hunger Games.
The trailer features a rather spirited performance from Katie Amanda Keane as Effie Trinket stand-in, Effu Poorpeople, and a handful of celebrity cameos, including Lily Tomlin as Kantkiss' proud mama. The gags are hit-or-miss (mostly the latter), but that final shot might actually make you laugh out loud.
One thing's for sure -- this will probably end up being more tolerable than any "Hunger Games" spoof that will surely be a part of "Not Another Epic Movie" or "Scary Movie 5" or whatever...

The CW is currently in a pilot-ordering frenzy. The teen-centric network has orded three very interesting new pilots, including one that very reminiscent of Suzanne Collins' "Hunger Games" trilogy.
While Katniss Everdeen herself will not be stepping onto the small screen any time soon, the new CW pilot, based off another series of books by Kiera Cass, "is an epic romance set 300 years in the future which centers on a poor young woman who is chosen by lottery to participate in a competition to become the next queen of a war-torn nation at a crossroads," reports EW.com.
Elizabeth Craft and Sarah Fain will serve as executive producers and writers for the project.
Meanwhile, the network also ordered a new J.J. Abrams drama, called "Shelter." The new Abrams drama is reportedly set at a historic New England summer resort where, according to EW.com, "the staff attend to the practical,...

It.s a good day to be a Hunger Games fan. Those of us who are looking forward to the film adaptation of Suzanne Collins. novel got a glimpse of Katniss and Peeta dressed up for the opening ceremonies earlier today, and now there.s a new poster to look at. The photo we shared earlier, showed District 12 tributes Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) and Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) dressed for the opening ceremonies of the games. Their coal-inspired costumes and styled-up hair almost allow us to think of what.s ahead for them as one big show, which is probably more or less how the Capitol treats the Hunger Games. This poster sets a different tone, reminding us that the .Game. ahead is a life or death situation, as kids from various districts in the future-set nation of Panem enter the arena with the hope of making it out alive. Most won...

The Web nearly caught fire Thursday (January 19) when Entertainment Weekly debuted the first image of "Hunger Games" characters Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) and Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) in their parade costumes, snapped mere moments before District 12's heroine becomes (quite literally) the Girl on Fire (we see you with that lit fuse, Cinna!).
Of course, fans of Suzanne Collins' best-selling novel know that the textured black suits are meant to reflect the duo's coal-mining community, brought to sartorial life by their savvy stylist (played by Lenny Kravitz).
"This is one of those moments where Cinna's character syncs up with the creativity of our costume designer Judianna Makovsky," director Garry Ross told EW.

"Twilight" is so last year.
Ok, maybe not, but Hollywood always has its eye peeled for the next big thing — and right now, that's shaping up to be "Hunger Games," the franchise based on Suzanne Collins' bestselling young-adult novels about a nationally televised battle in which teens compete to the death.
Though the first installment won't hit theaters until March 23, the sequel is already in the works. Word around Tinseltown is that Simon Beaufoy, the scribe behind two little films you may have heard of called "Slumdog Millionaire" and "127 Hours," has started the script for "Catching Fire." Beaufoy is tapping away at his MacBook (just a guess) under the supervision of Gary Ross, the director behind the first "Hunger Games" movie who is also set to direct the sequel, The Wrap reports.
