What splits the fine line between desire and expectations? Is it a thing you can see? Is it a thing you can film?
Film at Lincoln Center’s new retrospective supposes that if any of those questions have answers, they might reside in the cinema of Edward Yang. Moving from “A Rational Mind”––the title of their 2011 retrospective of Yang’s work––to “Desire/Expectations” reframes those questions to be more diffuse, less singular. A rational mind could answer in the affirmative or negative; a slash indicates that desire and expectations may occupy the same terrain simultaneously.
“A rational mind” is also, perhaps, an accusation a Yang character could lob at another, especially in A Confucian Confusion (1994), a workplace farce that subjects a “culture company” in 1990s Taipei to the contradictions of Confucian teachings. In turn (or simultaneously), the film interrogates Confucian-influenced, consumer-friendly spaces––like 1990s Taipei––to rethink old-world molds of tradition and expectation.

“Clone High,” the animated MTV cult classic about a high school devoted to teenage clones of historical figures from creators Phil Lord and Chris Miller (the “Spider-Verse” franchise) and Bill Lawrence (“Ted Lasso”), returns with new episodes on Max 20 years after the cancellation of its sole season. The core group has thawed to confront a more complicated world of social media and new cultural norms, where “Riverdale” has replaced “Dawson’s Creek” as the coming-of-age template, complete with slightly more adult humor and even sillier situations — and fewer executive notes since the creators now wield greater power.
Back are Abe Lincoln (Will Forte), Cleopatra (Mitra Jouhari replacing Christa Miller), JFK (Chris Miller), and Joan of Arc (Nicole Sullivan). They are joined by new clone classmates Harriet Tubman (Ayo Edebiri), Frida Kahlo (Vicci Martinez), Confucius (Kelvin Yu), Topher Bus (Neil Casey as a canceled Christopher Columbus), and Sacagawea (Jana Schmieding). After 20 years, “Clone High” has returned with a second season after the teen animated series about a high school for clones of famous historical figures was revived by Max.
Created by Bill Lawrence, Chris Miller and Phil Lord, the show picks up two decades later after Abe (Will Forte), Cleo (Mitra Jouhari taking over for Christa Miller), JFK (Chris Miller) and Joan (Nichole Sullivan), among others, were frozen in the season 1 finale before the show was canceled over controversy related to one of its central characters, a young version of Gandhi (originally voiced by Michael McDonald).
While the series sees the main foursome returning after being thawed out in a very special season 2 premiere, Gandhi is not among them. In fact, the character is no longer part of the series, with “Clone High” revealing that he is still frozen.
Although he doesn’t physically return, there are several nods to...

Nearly exactly two decades after being frozen in a meat locker, the students of Clone High are finally thawing out for a pinch-us-we’re-dreaming Max revival. Well, almost all of the students.
As revealed in the first of two episodes now available to stream, the hard-partying, impossibly horny clone of Mahatma Gandhi (voiced by Mad TV‘s Michael McDonald) will remain in the freezer for the foreseeable future. Fans will surely miss the presence of Abe Lincoln’s beloved sidekick, but the decision to exclude him from the revival was a no-brainer for Clone High‘s creators.

"Clone High" was a clever, silly animated show about genetic clones of famous historical figures — like Abe Lincoln, George Washington, and Marie Curie — getting sent to high school for an experiment. It served as a parody of high school dramas of the early 2000s like "Dawson's Creek" and "The O.C." And yet, the show quickly built an entertaining high school story of its own that was just as compelling, with the high concept shenanigans also letting the interpersonal romances breathe and shine.
The show was unceremoniously canceled by MTV due to both low ratings and protests about the portrayal of Gandhi in the series. Since then, creators Bill Lawrence, Phil Lord, and Chris Miller have all gone on to do rather impressive things. Lawrence co-created "Ted Lasso," and Lord and Miller helped revolutionize American animation with "Into the Spider-Verse."

Phil Lord and Chris Miller, directors of hits like "21 Jump Street" as well as the producers of "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse," are at the top of the food chain in Hollywood these days -- but it wasn't always that way. Earlier on in their careers, when they were green, they made a little animated show called "Clone High" for MTV that, despite gaining critical acclaim and a loving audience, lasted just one season. Now though, the show is coming back on HBO Max, and we've got a brand new teaser trailer for the revival of this cult classic.
Lord and Miller have put their powers to use to bring back their beloved series, with original voice actors Will Forte and Nicole Sullivan returning as well. Lord is also back as Scudworth, Miller as JFK and Mr. B, Christa Miller as Candide Sampson, Donald Faison as George Washington Carver, and Judah Miller as Scangrade.

Long before Phil Lord and Christopher Miller became household names with "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse" and Bill Lawrence took the sitcom world by storm with "Ted Lasso," the trio was responsible for a controversial animated comedy that lasted just one season. "Clone High" was a wild idea; a high-concept animated MTV sitcom about a high school full of clones of famous people that also served as a parody of teen shows at the time, it ultimately went off the air after its depiction of a clone of Gandhi inspired a hunger strike in India, according to Grantland.
Despite its short shelf life and bumpy history, "Clone High" achieved a bit of a cult status after it ended, and now, it's set to return with a stellar new cast and a few fan favorites. A first look at the upgraded version of the series debuted at WonderCon, where stars Nicole Sullivan...

This article contains massive spoilers for "John Wick: Chapter 4."
There's an ancient saying: "Before you set out on revenge, first dig two graves." The axiom has been attributed to everyone from Confucius to James Bond, but while its origins are indeterminate, its sentiment is evergreen. Revenge is a deadly business that will likely consume the soul — if not the life — of anyone who seeks it.
John Wick (played with brooding soulfulness by Keanu Reeves) can attest to the truth of that saying, as can many of his friends and enemies. In the latest installment of his saga, "John Wick: Chapter 4," the daughter of Wick's friend Shimazu (Hiroyuki Sanada), Akira (Rina Sawayama), observes that "everything he touches, dies." Another of Wick's on-again, off-again allies, Winston (Ian McShane) pleads with John to know where his roaring rampage of revenge will end. John himself, as ever, isn't sure of the particulars.

Alejandro Jodorowsky sees filmmaking as an art, not a business. He expands on this in the very title of his latest film: Psychomagic, A Healing Art. The film is a personal documentation of Jodorowsky’s theory of trauma therapy, called Psychomagic, in action. We can trust Jodorowsky when he calls action, though beware when he calls cut as his wife, artist Pascale Montandon, who has been his cinematographer on all his films, may keep the cameras rolling. Performance art is an effective placebo to confront psychic suffering and film does it in real time, breaking the wall between reality and performance. Those are real tears on the screen.
