U.S. actor and comedian Steve Martin and the state government of Australia’s Northern Territory have thrown their weight behind “Honey Ant Dreamers,” a feature film about the Indigenous art industry.
The film will portray the story behind the birth of the ‘Western Desert Art Movement’ told for the first time, through a First Nations lens. In the Western Desert outpost of Papunya, tribal groups fought to preserve their law, culture and identity by painting their Tjukurrpa, or things which were most precious to them. The sacred stories were once painted on their bodies and in the sand, but later migrated to boards and canvas. Propelled by the entrepreneurial efforts of traditional elder Kaapa Tjampitjinpa, these works have taken the global art world by storm.

The newly formed social impact film division of the Minderoo Foundation will “most likely” have a core diet of feature documentaries but is also open to other genres that facilitate social impact storytelling, according to executive producer Richard Harris.
Minderoo Pictures has been established with an initial commitment of $10 million to support screen projects that address the global challenges championed by the Perth-based philanthropic organisation.
The first four projects include a feature film collaboration between Academy Award-winning documentary filmmaker Louie Psihoyos and Josh Murphy, Robert Connolly’s feature Blueback, Michael Cordell and Emily-Anyupa Butcher’s Honey Ant Dreamers, and First Born, produced by Workshop TV.
Established by Andrew and Nicola Forrest in 2001, the Minderoo Foundation has since gone on to commit $2 billion to a range of global initiatives, ranging from ocean research and ending slavery, to collaboration in cancer and arts and culture projects.

Nick Murray.
Cjz MD Nick Murray has a cautionary message for those who are calling on the Federal Government to double the Producer Offset for TV productions to 40 per cent: Be careful what you wish for.
Murray opposes that move, arguing it will increase producers’ borrowing costs and risk losing the Screen Australia-mandated margins to producers on the Offset: 10 per cent for dramas and 15 per cent for documentaries.
“I don’t see the benefit to producers,” Murray told Screen Producers Australia CEO Matt Deaner in a webinar today.
Cjz funds the Offset on its shows via a bank credit line secured against the houses of Murray and Cjz partner Michael Cordell. If the Offset were doubled, he says that would mean doubling the credit line, which he doubts the bank would approve.
For producers who cash flow the Offset from Australian and UK lenders, he predicts the higher borrowing costs would not be sustainable.

(L-r): Nadine Garner, Sophie Wright, Nick Russell, Stephen Curry and Paul Denny in ‘Mr Black’.
Cjz MD Nick Murray and CEO Matt Campbell are grappling with three major issues facing the screen industry as the company ramps up its production and development slates.
They identify the challenges as the rising cost of drama budgets; a shortage of top-class writers given the talent drain to the Us and UK; and finding original concepts for factual and factual entertainment shows.
Murray questions why drama is more expensive to produce than comedy, observing: “I don’t know that the additional money that goes into drama is necessarily visible on screen to the audience.
“The costs of drama are going up and we need to be making it cheaper. There are work practices which make it impossible to make drama at the price it should be made at. We should be employing people differently or with more flexibility,...

Mandy McElhinney as Gina Rinehart in 'House of Hancock' (2015). Cordell Jigsaw Productions.
The two-year saga of Gina Rinehart.s battle with Channel Nine over House of Hancock (2015) came to an apparent end last month with the broadcaster unreservedly apologising to the mining magnate.
The two-part miniseries, about the life and family of Lang Hancock (initially advertised as a true story but later featuring a disclaimer with the word .fictionalised.), had been dogged by legal action since it first went to air. After the final episode was broadcast, Rinehart issued a statement listing 20 .glaring errors.. These fell in broadly three categories: sheer inaccuracy, portraying her as an unloving daughter, and implying unfair business practices.
Now Channel Nine has publicly acknowledged that .Mrs Rinehart had a close and loving relationship with her father Lang Hancock.. The Sydney Morning Herald and news.com.au have variously reported that the show won.t be streamed,...

An Australian program, Go Back To Where You Came From, has won the Best of Rose d.Or at the prestigious television festival held each year in Lucerne, Switzerland, for the first time ever.
The three-part documentary series apparently had the unanimous support of the 10-member judging panel; it was eligible because it won the award for factual entertainment, one of the 12 categories included in the awards.
Produced by Cordell Jigsaw, Go Back to Where you Came From offered six Australians the chance to walk in the shoes of refugees as they undertook a 25-day journey typical of the arduous path some refugees take to get to Australia to claim refugee status.
It was a smash hit for Sbs, taking the mantle of top-ranked show for 2011.
In a statement, Sbs managing director Michael Ebeid said he believed Go Back to Where you Came From has set a new standard for Sbs Television.

Michael Cordell, executive producer of production company Cordell Jigsaw, has hit back at a Daily Telegraph article that accused the production company of not paying key cast of an observational documentary.
Cordell was accused of not paying the 33 individual lifeguards that appear on his show Bondi Rescue, now in its seventh season on Ten, despite the production being a documentary and doing so would create a conflict of interest within the production.
Cordell said in a statement: “We have huge respect for the boys down at Bondi and weʼve made every effort to ensure theyʼre part of Bondi Rescueʼs success.”
“It would be a conflict of interest to actually employ the lifeguards to appear in the series. Nor would Waverley Council ever permit it. However, there are very concrete agreements in place that benefit both the Council and the lifeguards.”

Bondi Rescue's cast members receive no payment for their involvement in the show, it has been revealed. Bosses of the award-winning documentary series, which has run for seven series and appears in 13 countries, have admitted that all 33 of the lifeguards appear on a "gratis" basis and apparently only receive on average a $$60,000 (£40,000) salary per year. One of the cast members, who chose not to be named, told The Daily Telegraph: "Obviously we are not in this industry for the money and love what we do. But after a while you start to think, 'Hang on. A few people are making a lot of money here and we're not seeing anything'."
