The debut feature of Argentine filmmaker Pedro Cristiani is titled Deus Irae, and Deadline has shared a bloody first-look image from the upcoming horror movie today (seen above).
XYZ Films just recently acquired the North American sales rights to Deus Irae, while Deadline reports this morning that Reel Suspects has taken world sales rights on the movie.
Deus Irea follows “Father Javier, a priest living a fractured existence. On one side, he assists families who claim to have witnessed miracles, and on the other he belongs to a trio of excommunicated priests who hunt the possessed down to exorcize them under their own terms: with Bibles, fire and shotguns.”
“But when the only way to crush Evil is by becoming something even worse, he must question how much of his own humanity — or sanity — he’s willing to sacrifice in order to defeat the Devil.”
The film is based on the same-titled short film.

Exclusive: Paris-based genre specialist Reel Suspects has taken world sales rights on Argentinian filmmaker Pedro Cristiani’s directorial feature debut horror Deus Irae.

The cast features Pablo Ragoni, Gastón Ricaud, Sabrina Macchi, Jorge Prado, Agustín Rittano and Agustín Rittano.
The horror is an extension of Cristiani’s 2010 short of the same name which played multiple festivals.

Blood Window, Argentina’s rapidly growing Latin American genre film market, part of Buenos Aires’ Ventana Sur meet-mart, will hold a showcase at Cannes Festival’s Cannes Film Market from March 11 – 14.
Seven works in progress, currently in post-production, will be presented as part of Upcoming Fantastic Films, where ten-minute clips will accompany the presentations. Three finished films will also screen, aimed at representing the best of recent genre Latin American genre filmmaking, with two more participating in the Market Screenings.
Although Blood Window’s beginnings are steeped in blood and gore, the current body of films representing the market goes far beyond the traditional slasher flicks Latin America has nearly perfected, with films of fantasy, science fiction and a slew of different thrillers now participating – an indication of the festival’s maturation and growth.

If you have not already done so, please check out the first two installments of this series “Watch 15 Great Horror Short Films” and its follow-up “Watch 13 More Great Horror Short Films” not only because you’ll love them but also because films and filmmakers mentioned in those articles are referenced in this one.
Short form horror aficionados will also want to check out a recent article I wrote called “The Greatest Horror Anthology Film Segments of All Time”.
As you readers know, the horror short film is an artistic endeavor that can serve as a film industry calling card. A perfect example of this is the recent announcement of the feature film version of Can Evrenol’s superb horror short Baskin.

Following up on my previous article, “Watch 15 Great Horror Short Films,” which received a very positive response, I’ve researched and collected 13 more superb horror short films. As with the first article, I limited the choices to stand-alone live-action horror short films not produced for an anthology film and the selections were narrowed down by availability.
In further keeping with the criteria of the first article, animated horror short films and horror-comedy short films were excluded from consideration as both of these categories would make good subjects for their own individual articles. Sorry, Brutal Relax and Fist of Jesus fans.
It should also be noted that a number of highly regarded horror shorts readers might clamor to see in an article like this such as Ryan Haysom’s Yellow continue their long festival runs and have not been posted for online viewing and were therefore not considered for this piece.

The anthology horror film is back in the wake of the success of chapter-style horror films like The Theatre Bizarre (2011) and its announced follow-up, V/H/S (2012), the soon-to-be-released sequel V/H/S 2 (2013) and The ABC’s of Death (2012).
While this movement generates a good deal of conversation about the fondly remembered Amicus productions of the 1960’s and 1970’s like Dr. Terror’s House Of Horrors (Freddie Francis, 1965), Torture Garden (Freddie Francis, 1967), The House That Dripped Blood (Peter Duffell, 1971) and Asylum (Roy Ward Baker, 1972) among others, the comparison is not exactly accurate across the board.
While the segments of V/H/S are unified by shared visual style and a wraparound story, The Theatre Bizarre and The ABC’s of Death come off as collections of essentially unrelated horror short films loosely bound by a flimsy wraparound segment in the case of The Theatre Bizarre or a basic concept as...

It's been quite some time since we last heard any updated on the horror short Deus Irae. Pedro Cristiani's short film looked like a great supernatural/religious thriller which featured some pretty spectacular practical effects. The trailer revealed that indeed that was the case as was reaction from the short which played at Toronto After Dark last year.

Trailers are an under-appreciated art form insofar that many times they’re seen as vehicles for showing footage, explaining films away, or showing their hand about what moviegoers can expect. Foreign, domestic, independent, big budget: I celebrate all levels of trailers and hopefully this column will satisfactorily give you a baseline of what beta wave I’m operating on, because what better way to hone your skills as a thoughtful moviegoer than by deconstructing these little pieces of advertising? Some of the best authors will tell you that writing a short story is a lot harder than writing a long one, that you have to weigh every sentence. What better medium to see how this theory plays itself out beyond that than with movie trailers? Deus Irae Trailer I don't know where things went from ho-hum to invoking the word "holy" in a two sentence expression many would blasphemous but...

Few things excite me more than supernatural thrillers featuring demons, the occult and religion. There’s something about that mixture that proves a wicked cocktail of awesomeness that appeals to me. Enter Pedro Cristiani’s Deus Irae.
In Cristiani’s film, the Deus Irae are a secret order of priests who protect the world from the dark kingdom that lies just beyond our world. The creatures that inhabit it are on always on the lookout for a way into our world, awaiting the opportunity to do so via the weak and innocent. Father Marcos encounters one such case, a woman who is possessed by one of these creatures but during the exorcism, he becomes infected. Desperate to find a cure, he begins a search for answers, a search that leads him to uncover the dark origin of the Deus Irae.

While ostensibly nothing new, Federico Cueva's second feature as director (his first was Sultanes del Sur) will interest many of our readers, following in the footsteps of many Heaven versus Hell films loaded with action. No, we're not thinking Legion, we're thinking something leaning more towards the arthouse end. The script is written by Pedro Cristiani, one of the writers on the fantastic Argentian subway scifi flick Moebius, and yes, we're excited. We've got a concept poster and a synopsis as the project is still in development, but that's it for now.
