Exclusive, Updated with PGA statement: More than 2,300 film and TV producers on Tuesday are delivering a message to the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers: leave us out. The group delivered a petition to AMPTP President Carol Lombardini this morning demanding the dropping of the “P” from the acronym of the organization that just concluded a brutal negotiation with the WGA, and hopefully is in the final stages of a SAG-AFTRA deal after one of the longest strikes in Hollywood history.
Taking them out of a labor fight they were never part of is just the first step in what producers hope will lead to a redrawing of rules that leave them without health care, and being the last to be paid despite them being the early catalysts for film and TV projects.
The producers have amassed 2,338 signatures since June, when they first posted a petition on Change.

Netflix clearly is determined to play the major-studio game of big, star-driven action franchises. Extraction, its current sequel, another Russo Brothers’ franchise The Gray Man (with the promise of more), Red Notice and many others represent big-screen-type entertainment designed ultimately for people to watch on their couches at home.
This kind of stuff, while skillfully and expensively executed, still works best at Imax rather than your living room, but the streamer is convinced that it will goose subscriptions, so expect more of movies like Heart of Stone, a convoluted spy thriller loaded with James Bond-style action set pieces but with a wonder woman in the name of Gal Gadot in the center of it all. Taking a cue from Charlize Theron’s Netflix franchise The Old Guard, this is a female-driven enterprise where the men, namely Jamie Dornan’s complicated bad guy, take a back seat for the most part.

Billy Ray and Todd Garner are back for Week 5 of the WGA standoff on Deadline’s Strike Talk podcast. Click below to listen.
This week, Strike Talk looks at the role of independent producers. While often characterized as being pitted against writers by the companies, they are actually natural allies to the writers. The adage is it starts on the page, but often producers are the catalysts for getting projects hatched. Most only get paid when films and series commence to production. They are also the first ones to take haircuts when financiers decide budgets have to be shaved. Unlike writers, independent producers have no collective bargaining entity fighting for minimums and backends for them.
Joining in the discussion about the producer plight, and whether they should come under the same guild as writers and other creatives for more might at the bargaining table, are Mockingbird Pictures principals Julie Lynn and Bonnie Curtis.

“Heart of Stone” got its first sneak peek as part of Netflix’s Tudum event, with Gadot hyping the “extremely epic” film alongside co-stars Jamie Dornan and Alia Bhatt. Exclusive: Apple Studios’ Raymond and Ray has added Maribel Verdú and Oscar nominee Sophie Okonedo to the cast alongside Ewan McGregor and Ethan Hawke. The pic is now filming in Virginia.
The Rodrigo García-directed movie follows half-brothers Raymond (McGregor) and Ray (Hawke) who have lived in the shadow of a terrible father. Somehow, they still each have a sense of humor, and his funeral is a chance for them to reinvent themselves. There’s anger, there’s pain, there’s folly, there might be love, and there’s definitely grave-digging.
Verdú will star as Lucia, a partner and caretaker to Raymond and Ray’s father. Her character is described as one having the innate strength and alluring personality that will mend the broken family in the wake of the father’s death. Okonedo plays Kiera, a no-nonsense nurse and a source of comfort for Raymond and Ray’s father in his final days.

The Juliana Margulies-led “Dietland” has been canceled after one low-rated season, AMC announced on Thursday.
“‘Dietland’ is bold, original and brave,” the network said in a statement. “We are beyond proud of our partnership with Marti Noxon, Joy Nash, Juliana Margulies, Skydance and everyone else involved in bringing Sarai Walker’s story to the screen. Similarly, Aisha Tyler and our friends at Embassy Row delivered a unique companion show that led with fresh voices and important topics. ‘Dietland’ garnered critical acclaim and passionate fans but unfortunately we will not be able to continue with a second season.”
The critically-acclaimed series, from executive producer and showrunner Marti Noxon, starred Joy Nash and Margulies in an adaptation of the novel of the same name by Sarai Walker.

AMC is rounding out its cast for Dietland, its 10-episode straight-to-series darkly comedic drama based on Sarai Walker’s novel. Campbell Scott (House of Cards), Alanna Ubach (Coco, Girlfriends Guide To Divorce), Kelly Hu (Arrow), Marc Blucas (Underground), Ami Sheth (Blindspot) and Jen Ponton (30 Rock) are set in recurring roles opposite leads Julianna Margulies and Joy Nash.
Dietland, from Marti Noxon (UnReal), Skydance TV and AMC Studios, is set against the backdrop of the beauty industry. It follows Plum Kettle (Nash), an obese woman who is preparing for weight-loss surgery when her world is upturned by two rival feminist factions. Caught between old ideas and radical new extremes, Plum must decide for herself what it means to be a revolutionary as the “war of the sexes” becomes literal.

AMC has ordered a 10-episode adaptation of “Dietland,” the 2015 novel about weight loss and beauty, from executive producer Marti Noxon (“UnReal,” “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”).
The novel, written by Sarai Walker and released in 2015, takes place in the beauty industry and mixes character drama and revenge fantasy to explore society’s obsession with weight loss and beauty. Kirkus Reviews called the book “part ‘Fight Club,’ part feminist manifesto, an offbeat and genre-bending novel that aims high.”
Noxon, who will direct the first several episodes of the series, elaborated more about the show on Saturday at AMC’s portion of the Television Critics Association press tour. Noxon said she was concerned at first that she wouldn’t find a home for “Dietland,” which she noted features a “funny and poignant” story that “you can’t quantify.”
But it’s also dark: The main character is morbidly obese, and finds herself being pulled between two feminist cults.

“Funny” isn’t the first word that comes to mind when describing a film about eating disorders and the people who suffer from them, but Marti Noxon’s “To the Bone” manages to be both very funny and very moving, often at the same time. Loosely based on her own experiences with anorexia, the lauded writer and showrunner’s feature directorial debut is bound for a Netflix release after the streaming outfit picked up the film after its Sundance premiere earlier this year.
It was a good buy, and Netflix seems to be celebrating that with an equally as good trailer, one that plays on both the film’s humor and heart.

For her feature directorial debut, Marti Noxon goes deep. Her Sundance premiere “To the Bone” is based on her own experiences with eating disorders and recovery, framed around the darkly funny journey of a young anorexic named Ellen (Lily Collins) as she attempts a radical treatment that offers her what is likely her last chance at survival. (No, really, it’s funny.)
Noxon is already a major name in the television space, best known for writing and producing series such as the beloved “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” (where she was mentored by Joss Whedon) and recent smash hit “UNreal.” She’s dabbled in film before, including penning scripts for Rick Rosenthal’s late-’90s romantic comedy “Just a Little Harmless Sex” and the 2011 remake of “Fright Night.” But she’s never done anything quite like “To the Bone.”

James Cameron and Tim Miller's Terminator reboot is coming in November 2019. Here's everything you need to know.
Terminator: Dark Fate is the next installment in the time-traveling cyborg franchise, and it's not what you were expecting.
Franchise creator James Cameron has recruited Deadpool director Tim Miller "to direct a reboot, a conclusion" to the Terminator franchise, with Cameron acting as a "godfather." This is a loaded term, which hopefully is code for creative consultant as much as executive producer.
The previous franchise installment, Terminator Genisys has been terminated from the timeline (sorry), as has the two films and television series before that. Terminator: Dark Fate acts as a true continuation (and ending?) of the story that was started by the first two films in 1984 and 1991. And if that wasn't any clearer, the fact that it features the return of Linda Hamilton to the role...

Like so many indie movies, “Wakefield” was something of a miracle for writer-director Robin Swicord. It’s been more than eight years since “The Jane Austen Book Club” (an average statistic for women directors); in the meantime she received an Oscar nomination for “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” (she shared story by credit with Eric Roth). But for “Wakefield” to happen required infinite patience and no small amount of luck.
Swicord sent “Wakefield” over the transom to Telluride co-director Tom Luddy. “He loves the interesting movie,” she said. “He has broad taste, a love for European movies. I felt when I was cutting ‘Wakefield,’ ‘We are making an interesting, strange movie.'”

Hollywood’s summer blockbuster season may be in full effect, with marquee releases in the vein of Star Trek Beyond and Suicide Squad being readied for release over the next fortnight or so, but it won’t be long before moviegoers will be knee-deep in award-tipped science fiction.
Passengers, for instance, is one that immediately springs to mind – not lest because it stars Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence, arguably two of the most in-demand stars of the moment – while Julius Onah’s God Particle is also harboring plenty of promise. Further down the pipeline is Daniel Espinosa’s sci-fi thriller Life, which has now welcomed aboard Olga Dykhovichnaya and Ariyon Bakare (Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell) to its appropriately starry ensemble.
Set to launch into orbit in March of next year, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that Dykhovichnaya and Bakare will be rubbing shoulders with Jake Gyllenhaal on the International Space Station and,...
