The birthplace of such recent gems as Hannah Ha Ha, Retrograde, The Civil Dead, Yelling Fire In An Empty Theater, and Waiting for the Light to Change, the Slamdance Film Festival returns for its 29th edition, kicking off January 20 in Utah and January 23 online. One title that especially caught our eye is Love and Work, the latest from Pete Ohs, who last directed the SXSW hit Jethica. Starring Stephanie Hunt, Will Madden, Frank Mosley, Alexi Pappas, and John S. Davies, we’re pleased to exclusively premiere the film’s first teaser ahead of a Slamdance debut on January 20.
Here’s a synopsis:
Diane arrives at the shoe factory looking for a job. She meets the boss, nails the interview and gets hired on the spot, immediately joining a small team of co-workers led by a helpful Texan named Fox.
She’s great at her job but before her first day of work ends,...

We return with another edition of the Indie Spotlight, highlighting recent independent horror news sent our way. Today’s feature includes details on a Wes Craven art exhibition, the first sighting of Megafoot, a 100 zombie films graphical print, first photos from Australian Horror film, Barrow, an interview with actor, writer, and filmmaker Sean Stone, and much more:
The Horror Legacy of Wes Craven Exhibit Details: “Wes Craven has been feeding our collective horror consciousness since 1972, when his first feature, “The Last House on the Left,” debuted. That film was gritty, raw and terrifying, it still causes a guttural reaction some 40 years later. In his career, Wes has created some of the most memorable moments in horror cinema, from the torture scene in “The Serpent and the Rainbow,” to the Johnny Depp’s explosive scene in “A Nightmare on Elm Street,” to the first glimpse of Michael Berryman’s savagery in “The Hills Have Eyes.

With domestic rights to S-vhs (review) locked up by Magnolia, Screen Daily is now reporting that Paris-based Memento Film International has picked up international rights to the found footage horror flick following its premiere in the Midnight section of the Sundance Film Festival last week.
“We’re already big fans of the first one, which was super scary and smart,” said Memento head of international sales Tanja Meissner. “This one takes it to another level. The talent of the directors involved and the new orientations on the found footage exercise makes this second installment a sure bet for theatrical releases around the globe.”
S-vhs is produced by The Collective, Salient Media and Brad Miska and Tom Owen’s Bloody Disgusting.
Synopsis:

Thank you, Magnolia for picking up the second installment of the killer VHS anthology.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Magnolia brought the U.S. distribution rights, after S-v/H/S premiered in the midnight section of the festival, for more than $1M.
The project was directed by Simon Barrett, Adam Wingard, Edúardo Sanchez, Gregg Hale, Timo Tjahjanto, Gareth Huw Evans and Jason Eisener. The screenwriters were Barrett, Tjahjanto, Evans, Eisener, John Davies and Jamie Nash and the film stars Wingard, Lawrence Levine, L. C. Holt, Kelsy Abbott and Hannah Hughes.
I can’t wait to see how much more carnage old VHS tapes can cause. We’ve covered a lot of news about S-v/H/S over the past month. Watch the trailer below and find out more about the film here.

Good news has come out for those of you excited to see the second installment of a budding anthology franchise! It's looking like S-vhs (review) has found itself a home with the folks who brought you the original flick, V/H/S! Yay, no-brainer!
Deadline is reporting that Magnolia Pictures is wrapping up a deal worth north of $1 million for S-vhs after an auction that included Lionsgate and Drafthouse. The deal beats the sum for the first film, V/H/S, which Magnolia also released.

One of my favorite parts of the Sundance Film Festival is the Park City at Midnight movie line-up. This is where they put on a lot of the horror, sci-fi, comedy and other genre type films. They've also announced the movies that will be a part of the Spotlight and New Frontier sections.
Once again it looks like we've got a lot of solid films to look forward to. Of course there's going to be a few duds in the mix, but for the most part this looks like it's going to be an exciting year at Sundance. I can't wait to watch these movies!
Look over the list, read about the films, and let us know which movies sound interesting to you that you'd like to more know about!

Sundance Film Festival 2013 announced its initial line-up last night, with a very promising slew of films competing in the Us and World Dramatic and Documentary categories, as always.
Tonight, we have more news from Park City, Ut, with the announcement of the films that will be screening in the Spotlight, Park City at Midnight, and New Frontier categories.
Rising young star, Alice Englert (Ginger & Rosa, Beautiful Creatures), will be heading to the festival in the Park City at Midnight category with Jeremy Lovering’s horror, In Fear, which has a very tense and promising synopsis.
Ben Wheatley’s Sightseers will be getting its long-awaited Us premiere, having debuted at Cannes earlier this year, and been earning critics’ praise ever since. Steve Oram and Alice Lowe co-wrote the film and star in the leads, and with the ever-brilliant Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World), there’s...

Something nice happened to us while we were preparing the schedule for Ebertfest 2012, which plays April 25-29 at the Virginia Theater (above) in Champaign-Urbana, Ill. We'd invited Patton Oswalt to attend with his "Big Fan. He agreed and went one additional step: "I'd like to personally choose a film to show to the students, and discuss it." That sounded to me like a splendid idea, embodying the spirit of this festival, which combines the love of good films with volunteerism. This is a rare festival where no business takes place. No films are bought or sold. No deals are signed. It's simplicity itself: We join in a classic 1920 palace, 1,600 of us, and watch a film as it should be seen, on a vast screen with perfect sound. Then we talk about them afterwards. The festival and the theater come to us through the work of countless volunteers from the University and the community of Champaign-Urbana.

Most moviegoers can agree on one thing: there were way too many movies this year. If you’re (un)fortunate enough to live in New York, you had the opportunity to see around 600 new features come and go; the rest of us didn’t get that many fewer. That means that anyone who’s been put in a position to make a top 10 (or top 15, or top 20…) had to make some sad cuts. So we thought it appropriate to highlight some of the year’s most memorable individual moments, scenes, and sequences, from movies that may or may not have made our individual year-end lists. Some were from movies we didn’t love; some are from movies we didn’t even like, but all stood out. Which is no small feat considering just how insane the release calendar has become.

The Film:
It was only after I woke up the next day, did I realize that I had the best acid trip of my life. Let me recall: After 86 minutes, my trip wasn’t over. Whatever Jason Eisener gave me hasn’t stopped. I was in this room and the walls were breathing, yet it was raining rainbow-colored VHS tapes from a hidden collection behind the curtain of this video store. The clerk was sweaty and he laughed. I stumbled along, as the fluorescent lights radiated a mirage of colors. As I slowly picked up the VHS cover of Street Trash, a whirlwind came from behind. I turned and saw Margaret Thatcher. She was tall and bearing, as she pointed her finger at me. “No, not that!” She scolded. Just as I turned cold, a buck shot ripped through her and she fell into her own blood.
“Welcome to Scumville!

Hobo with a Shotgun took old school grind house fans by storm and now I’ve finally witness it on this 2-Disc Collector’s Edition.
The movie stars Rutger Hauer as a nameless hobo in search of a nice town to start over in and to call his home but he picks the wrong town with Hope Town, which is actually pretty much hopeless, that’s right people.
Hauer takes the wrong jump off the train. He walks into a town that is more post-apocalyptic than anything that has to do with the word hope. He meets up with Abby (Milly Dunsworth) a hooker with a heart of gold, yes you’ve heard that before haven’t you. He actually saves her a few times and they form a weird bond. The hobo meets up with town gangster known as The Drake (Brian Downey), his twisted sons and their gang...

As subtle as its title, Hobo with a Shotgun is an in-your-face orgy of Seventies/Eighties grindhouse exploitation elements that goes way over the line in terms of blood and gore and good taste. That said, it’s bound to find a large audience that can’t get enough of the sicko stuff.
Rutger Hauer is mad as hell and is not going to take it anymore in Hobo with a Shotgun.

Director Jason Eisener's Hobo With a Shotgun was a bloody entertaining film of insanity, one I recommend you watch as soon as you get the chance. If for some reason you haven't watched the movie yet on On Demand, then you should be happy to hear that it's being released on Blu-ray and DVD on July 5th! This is a must own movie for me, and as you know, with DVD's come an ass-load of awesome extras and special features to go through!
Here are the details:
Magnet (distributed by Magnolia Home Entertainment) has officially announced plans to bring the 2011 Jason Eisener directed film Hobo with a Shotgun starring Rutger Hauer and Robb Wells to Blu-ray Disc on July 5th. Tech specs for the release haven’t been officially announced and the title is not yet available for pre-order over at Amazon but stay tuned and we’ll keep you updated.

After building up a quite a buzz on the film festival circuit, action movie Hobo With a Shotgun has been given a July 7 release date on DVD and Blu-ray by Magnolia Home Entertainment.
From new director Jason Eisener (The Rite), the film stars Rutger Hauer as a homeless vigilante, who, like the title suggests, is armed with a pump-action shotgun and blows away crooked cops, pedophile Santas and other scumbags. Awesome!
Along with Machete, a trailer for Hobo won the Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez Grindhouse Trailer Contest and was featured in Grindhouse, leading to the filming of the full-length movie.
Hobo With a Shotgun will be released in three versions: a single DVD ($26.98), Two-dvd Collector’s Edition ($29.98) and Blu-ray ($29.98). For a limited time, the two-dvd and Blu-ray versions will include a downloadable digital copy.

After Miss Cooke has a heart attack, supply teacher Mr Walmsley is called in to take over a class of “future felons of America”. Left with lesson plans merely stating “read whatever”, Walmsley is unafraid of his arrogant pupils describing them “as interesting as a fever blister” and being disciplined on his first day for threatening a kid. Through Walmsely’s experiences writer-director Andy Anderson explores the hypocrisy of current morés in education, fulfilling the dreams of many abused inner-city teachers in his 1998 film, Detention.
Faced with students who call him “Mr Fuck You” and “arsehole”, Walmsley is fighting a losing battle. Witnessing a student trying to sexually assault a teacher and later hearing how the psychotic girlfriend of this pupil seriously beat the same teacher, Walmsley formulates a clever plan - “The Push Start Programme”. Almost untraceable with his empty wallet, temporary address and disinterest in collecting pay cheques,...

It'll be going out wide soon but for fans of Jason Eisener eager for a look at the feature version of his Hobo With A Shotgun there's no need to wait. Twitch has just been given an exclusive first look at the first production still from the film and, yep, there's Rutger Hauer as the Hobo, wielding the titular shotgun. Hopefully I'll be able to show you some of this in motion soon. It's looking pretty amazing.
(Halifax, May 5, 2010) - Rutger Hauer has been combing the streets of Halifax and Dartmouth as a grizzly-looking Hobo in the gore-action-comedy, Hobo With A Shotgun, now in its third week of production in Nova Scotia.
"We're being very naughty and very dirty and very ugly. We're not trying to make anything pretty. We're not trying to charm anybody. We're saying this is an ugly movie," Hauer said on set, during a break in filming.

Stage West presents Liz Lochhead's wry and funny Good Things.
49-year-old Susan is going through what is generally described as a bit of a rough patch. Her husband has left her for a much younger woman, she has lost her job, her father is slipping into senility, and her teenage daughter is behaving like-well-a teenager.
Now she's volunteering in a resale shop, and maintaining a (mostly) cheerful determination not to fall into victimhood, in Liz Lochhead's comedy Good Things, beginning Thursday, October 29 at Stage West's Vickery playhouse.
Susan's co-workers, the nurturing and possibly gay Frazer, and the micro-managing Marjorie, are eager to see Susan's life sorted out in appropriately fairy-tale fashion. They've encouraged her attempts at online and speed-dating, though she herself is less than enthusiastic.
