Chicago – Social history is often the seed for actual history. The simple story of two youth gangs in England in the early 1960s – The Mods and The Rockers – is grist for the incredible social history film, “Quadrophenia.” The new Criterion Collection Blu-ray DVD release of this 1979 classic will satisfy any side of the ardent rock admirer, especially those of the magnificent rock group “The Who” – the film is based on their lesser known 1973 rock opera of the same name.
Blu-Ray Rating: 5.0/5.0
This was originally produced by The Who Films, and The Criterion Collection creates a lavish package with background information and the history of the clash between the mid-1960s British youth of “The Mods” – a clean cut style associated with the music of “The Who, as well as soul, R&B and the Mersey Beat – and “The Rockers,” who favored more of the direct, Marlon-Brando-in-”The-Wild-One” motorcycles and 1950s rock.

Synopsis: Di Chandler (Rupert Penry - Jones) and his team investigate a series of brutal killings and maimings, which Buchan believes mirror Kray killings of the 1960s. It.s been a year since Di Chandler failed to capture the ripper, and he is still considered to be a pain in the arse, and somewhat of a joke to the higher ups, but one person he seems to have won over is DS Ray Miles (Phil Davies), who has gained a respect for the upper class Di as a brother in arms, and the fact that Chandler opted to stay with an mortally injured DS Miles instead of chasing after the Ripper for a bit of Glory has endeared him...

In early 2009 fans of crime drama were treated to the excellent three part drama Whitechapel, which saw Rupert Penry Jones, who is best known for his role in Spooks, take on the role of idealistic and obsessive Di Joseph Chandler. The first series focused on a serial killer, who was mimicking the infamous Ripper murders in exact detail, and had Di Chandler leading the hunt with the aid of an eccentric expert on Jack The Ripper, and a cynical and world weary DS Ray Miles (Phil Davies). Whitechapel, which took its initial inspiration from the infamous Whitechapel murders even used an unusual first-person perspective flashback viewpoint to illustrate some of the murders within the story. Only ever...

Bisexual Horror: Gaze and Desire in David DeCoteau’s The Sisterhood by Heidi Martinuzzi
Traditionally, horror films have been made for a straight, white, male audience. Most film studios release their horror movies with young males, aged 14-22, in mind and tend to create storylines to accommodate their perceived tastes; gratuitous amounts of blood and sexualized female nudity. While mainstream cinema has included gay storylines and filmmakers in increasing numbers in recent years, horror movies have invariably catered to a static audience and excluded gay characters (except as villains and comic relief.) This reluctance to sell and make queer horror movies has relegated those films to low-budget releasing and production budgets through select studios like Here!...
David DeCoteau is a queer filmmaker in the low-budget b-movie industry, having directed and written nearly one hundred films involving some level of exploitation of either the male or female body. At the beginning of his directing career,...
