Thirty years after “Homicide: Life on the Street” hit the airwaves, a UK filmmaker and podcaster and a Baltimore camera assistant decided it was time to revisit the groundbreaking drama that garnered numerous awards during its seven seasons on NBC. Their new monthly behind-the-scenes podcast, Homicide: Life on the Set, premieres in March, focusing on creators and crew, including engaging conversations with camera, lighting and sound techs, creators, writers, actors, directors and more, including Jean de Segonzac, Tom Fontana and Kyle Secor.
“In early 2023, I started researching and developing a concept for a UK-based police film,” filmmaker Chris Carr said. “Always a huge fan of ‘Homicide,’ especially its gritty, cinéma-vérité shooting style, I started looking for a camera crew member to interview about how the show was shot. Kelli Giddish, who plays Detective Amanda Rollins on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, is leaving the show. The actress joined the NBC drama in its 13th season and will depart in the middle of the upcoming 24th season.
Speculation has been rampant of late that Giddish may be looking to turn in her badge. “I wanted to address the chatter I’ve seen online and let everyone know that this will, indeed, be my last season on Law & Order: Svu,” she said in a statement. “Playing Rollins has been one of the greatest joys and privileges of my life. NBC’s Law & Order franchise will open the 2022-23 by doing something it has never done in its long history.
All three shows in the brand — the original L&o, Svu and Organized Crime — will come together for a single story spanning their season premieres on Sept. 22. It’s a first for Law & Order but not for executive producer Dick Wolf, whose teams have pulled off similar three-show events on NBC’s Chicago dramas and CBS’ FBI franchise.
Law & Order showrunner Rick Eid and Chicago Pd’s Gwen Sigan wrote the feature-length telecast. Franchise veteran Jean de Segonzac directs the first two hours; Alex Hall helms the third.

Elementary, Season 2: Episode 15 – “Corpse de Ballet”
Written by Liz Friedman
Directed by Jean de Segonzac
Airs Thursday nights at 10 on CBS
The biggest strength of Elementary as a series is perhaps how well it draws on the relationships of its characters or else how it delves into their individual lives. Even if some episodes have crime plots that are a bit lacking, Sherlock and Joan can almost always elevate the material to make an episode stand out in a way it otherwise wouldn’t have. “Corpse de Ballet” continues in a trilogy-like series of episodes that have wonderfully unique plots – this time focusing on the murder of a bisected ballerina – but those interesting moments around the plot that usually involve the main characters are all but absent, making the episode suffer more than the average Elementary entry.

The Americans Season 1, Episode 4 ‘In Control’
Directed by Jean de Segonzac

Back when The Americans was announced, I wondered how much of ‘historical’ drama it would desire to be. The different approaches of Elizbeth and Phillip to handling the growing tension between the two countries in the aftermath of the shooting is slightly problematic: Elizabeth’s tunnel vision continues to paint her as loyal to a fault, pulling the audience’s emotions to side with Phillip, who approaches...

In the cottage industry that was "Law & Order," one show remains: "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit."
And this alone proves procedural shows can shine. Stories make sense, writing is tight, and actors are sharp. The result is a gritty drama celebrating its 300th episode Wednesday, Oct. 24.
Though the show shoots all over New York, its home base is a cavernous studio on a Hudson River pier. Here, actors, directors and producers speak with Zap2it while shooting the milestone episode.
This plot, as expected, deals with an excruciating topic -- kidnapping. As a dad bends down to retrieve a $20 bill on a subway platform, a stranger snatches his 7-year-old son and jumps onto a departing train.

The cops are off and running, stopping at nothing until they find the perps. Three actors have starred on the show since the 1999 premiere: Mariska Hargitay, Richard Belzer and Dann Florek as Detectives Olivia...

Boss Season 2, Episode 8: “Consequence”
Written by Paul Keables
Directed by Jean de Segonzac
Boss Season 2, Episode 9: “Clinch”
Written by Julie Hébert
Directed by Mario Van Peebles
Airs Fridays at 9pm (Et) on Starz
Closing in on the finale, “Consequence” and “Clinch” have some heavy lifting to do. The loose strands and split ends of the season so far need to be woven and trimmed to allow for a finale unburdened by exposition, mystery, and plot games. The first of these episodes is a let down: mostly functional (save for its climax), “Consequence” acts on its obligation to present the return of Kane as a brilliant puppet master, healthy and lucid. As storytelling goes, it’s a fine plan, yet the execution is clunky. Boss is clearly too big for its boots: it has a full hour to do its job, but the more it packs in, the more...

In the criminal justice-on-tv system, few procedurals have achieved as many episodes as Law & Order: Svu. This is its 300th story.
When NBC’s Svu airs its 300th episode on Oct. 24, showrunner Warren Leight says fans should expect to see some familiar faces.
But let’s get this out of the way now: Christopher Meloni, who left the show last year, won’t reprise his role of Det. Elliot Stabler. Diehard fans will however be treated to an hour that showcases three members of the original cast – Mariska Hargitay, Dann Florek and Richard Belzer – and rewards those who’ve been watching from the start.

Boss Season 2, Episode 5: “Mania”
Written by Kevin J. Hynes
Directed by Jean de Segonzac
Airs Fridays at 9pm (Et) on Starz
As “Mania” shows us this week, it’s when Boss strips its cast and plotlines down to an essential few that it truly gains momentum. The preceding episodes had a tough job to do: establish new characters and their motivations, and new plotlines, while also building convincingly towards Kane’s increasing madness. The general impression was that much of the work those episodes did was just that: work. Just as one example, the scenes that established Kitty’s part in the narrative this season were overwhelmingly functional and without substance and, because of that, felt largely inauthentic.
So in “Mania”, the audience and creators get to reap the rewards of all that piecemeal plotting. The gubernatorial mid-election debate between Zajac and Walsh offers the opportunity for a few...

Written by Dee Johnson

Boss, Season 2, Episode 2: “Through and Through”
Written by Bradford Winters
Directed by Jean de Segonzac
Airs Fridays at 9pm (Et) on Starz
Boss is back on our screens with a confident, clear renewal of its grand themes and dense plotting, and, as with Season One, we watch to see how the kingdom will come down. The opening scene of the second season voices the story’s central conflict and complication explicitly and in certain terms: Kane’s health will continue to rapidly decline, his judgement will begin to falter, and his behaviour will become steadily more irrational. As Dr. Ella Harris (brought back into the fold by Kane) insists, Kane’s best days are behind him, and no amount of hard-earned self-belief, sense of purpose, or self-awareness will provide immunity. Another core complication: Kane...

Actress Nicki Clyne has appeared in numerous genre-centric projects. While The Twilight Zone, Dead Like Me, The Dead Zone, Smallville, and Dark Angel all have spots on her resume, it was her role as Crewman Specialist Cally Tyrol on the acclaimed Sci-Fi incarnation of Battlestar Galactica that rocketed her into sci-fi stardom.
Starlog recently caught up with Clyne to discuss her life pre-and-post BSG, and find out what lies ahead...
Jason Anders/Starlog: So let's talk about growing up in British Columbia and your time in school; did you always know as a child in school plays that you wanted to act professionally, and at what point did you ultimately decide to put your energy into making a career out of your talent?
Nicki Clyne: I think on some level I always wanted to be an actor. I've been performing for as long as I can remember, whether it was on stage,...

Blair Vs. Chuck — It’s an Upper East Side face-off when Blair (Leighton Meester) and Chuck (Ed Westwick) both set their sights on a particular item up for bid at Sotheby’s and the personal stakes are high. Lost City Raiders aired on Scifi Channel on November 22nd 2008 to record breaking ratings. In fact, as it stands right now, Lost City Raiders is ranked Scifi's 5th most watched movie event of 2008. Of course, with the questionable quality of some of Scifi's original programming I wasn't too surprised to read that tidbit of information after viewing the film. Next to many of the films they produce, Lcr feels like a full fledged and fully realized Pa adventure film.
Many viewers seem to be comparing Lcr to Waterworld but instead, I say the film owes more to the rollicking adventure yarns of Indiana Jones. So, a word of warning to anyone who attempts to track this one down; to enjoy the Pa...
