Stephen King fans are a little protective over "The Dark Tower," the author's sprawling epic that began with "The Gunslinger" in 1982, and it's hard to blame them. It took King 22 years to complete the saga, with gaps of up to five years between each book, so it's been a part of many fans' lives for decades. Not only that, but there is the awful 2017 "The Dark Tower" feature adaptation from director Nikolaj Arcel that just didn't quite cut the mustard. While Idris Elba was certainly an interesting and potentially great choice for the embittered gunslinger Roland Deschain, Arcel's movie tried to condense too much of King's novels into too little screentime, and the film was ultimately a flop.
Mike Flanagan, the director behind fantastic King adaptations like "Gerald's Game" and "Doctor Sleep," has stepped up to take the reins and try to create a "Dark Tower" television series that does the beloved saga justice.

The long-awaited Adaptation of Stephen King's Magnum Opus topped the weekend box office. The Dark Tower barely edged out Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk pulling in more than $19M dollars. That's great news for fans of the movie, but for true Stephen King fans that number 19 might raise a few eyebrows.
That's because the number 19 is important to The Dark Tower series, especially in the last three books. In the books Roland Deschain and his group start seeing the number everywhere: names that have 19 letters, numbers whose digits add up and total 19, and branches that spell out the numbers, etc.
These instances are pointed out on the Dark Tower Wiki:
Eddie Dean flys in Delta flight 910 to New York. 9 + 10 add up to 19.Alice is told to tell Nort nineteen to find out what is on the other side after death. When Jake Chambers visits Calvin Tower's bookstore, The Manhattan Restaurant of the Mind,...

The world learned today that a judge has granted freedom to presidential assassin John Hinckley Jr., the man who in 1981 attempted to kill Ronald Reagan in an ill-conceived “love offering” to Taxi Driver actress Jodie Foster. The news may come as a shock to many, but those who have been keeping close tabs on the Hinckley case knew that this day was inevitable. In May, Washingtonian writer Eddie Dean penned an eerily compelling article entitled “How John Hinckley Lives Now,” detailing the 61-year-old Hinckley’s current lifestyle and describing in detail the surprising amount of freedom and autonomy he had already been granted in recent years.
The “bohemian” son of a well-to-do family, Hinckley traveled to Los Angeles in the 1970s to pursue his dreams of a music career. That’s where he saw Taxi Driver 15 times and became obsessed with Foster. After his infamous assassination attempt, Hinckley ...

Let's just pull the band-aid right off: Oy, Eddie Dean and Susannah will not be in The Dark Tower. If you've never read a single page of Stephen King's sprawling fantasy epic about good and evil forces questing to reach what is essentially the center of the universe, their absence won't mean a thing. But, if you're a fan of the series, you're probably scratching your head a bit. So let's break down why this is a big deal, but also why it may be the film's secret weapon against some haters. Why it's a big deal: In The Dark Tower the good guys are a "ka-tet" of strangers united by fate consisting of Roland (the leader), Jake (a young boy with a psychic gift), Oy (a dog-like creature that can kind of talk), Eddie (a...

The big screen adaptation of Stephen King's The Dark Tower continues to pick up steam. The long-in-development film added sizable stars Matthew McConaughey and Idris Elba a few months back, and it's supporting cast is still getting rounded out.
The Hollywood Reporter broke the story yesterday that Fran Kranz, who played Marty in Drew Goddard's The Cabin In The Woods, has signed on to play Pimli Prentiss. This means Kranz will be the right-hand-man to McConaughey's Man In Black.

After all these years of impatiently waiting, Stephen King's The Dark Tower series is finally going into production! Sony Pictures announced at CinemaCon that the first film has already started principal photography with director Nikolaj Arcel (The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo).
Idris Elba is set to play Roland, the Gunslinger, Matthew McConaughey will play the villain Flagg a.k.a. The Man in Black, and Breaking Bad's Aaron Paul is said to be taking on the role of Eddie Dean.
This is such a gritty, dark fantasy world that has only lived in my imagination from reading the book. I can't wait to start seeing images and video footage from this film. I'm so excited to see how this story is going to be brought to life. This franchise has the potential to be huge! If the studios and filmmakers do it right it will be.

The film adaptation of Stephen King's fantasy novel series "The Dark Tower" began principal photography in South Africa this week ahead of a February 17th 2017 release.
Idris Elba will play Roland the Gunslinger, while Matthew McConaughey will play the Man in Black. Aaron Paul is rumored to be on board as Eddie Dean, but that's not confirmed at this time.
Nikolaj Arcel helms the project which has spent years in development hell and has only now, finally, begun filming. The first in a potential franchise, the film is believed to be using many elements from the third book in the series which is where the novels began laying out a story arc in earnest.

A couple of years ago we learned that Breaking Bad star Aaron Paul was in talks to join the big screen adaptation of Stephen King’s The Dark Tower. The actor previously said that he had “a ton of meetings” when Ron Howard was still attached to direct to take on the role of Eddie Dean.
A lot has changed since then. The movie is now set up at Sony Pictures and is being directed by Nikolaj Arcel (The Royal Affair), and as of right now the film stars Idris Elba in the role of Roland and Matthew McConaughey as The Man in Black, who is the villain in the story.
We now have word from Blastr that Aaron Paul has actually been cast in the film. The site says the information came from someone inside the production and that they can confirm it. But still, we are going to treat it as a rumor.

Last night, news broke that Aaron Paul might be getting the role of his dreams in The Dark Tower, after years of lobbying and meeting to star in the role of Eddie Dean. Well, it looks like the Breaking Bad star has read those very same reports, and has a couple of things to say about the possibility. Aaron Paul took to Twitter this evening, in what looks like some high visibility maneuvering designed to grease the wheels for his casting. The first tweet shows Paul referencing an item covering the original scoop from Blastr, with the following response: This is beautiful news. https://t.co/Ktf0SV8HIy. Talk about wish fulfillment. Aaron Paul, who starred in AMC's Breaking Bad- considered by many to be one of the finest TV shows ever produced- has had a dream role in mind for quite sometime. You may have heard about the big screen adaptation of Stephen King's The Dark Tower that is inching its way towards production. You have also heard about how it's taken forever for everything to come together, with several studios, writers, directors, and actors coming and going from the ambitious project. What you may not know, is that Paul is something of a super fan, and he's been lobbying for the role of Eddie Dean in the book. A new report claims that Paul may have finally snagged his dream gig.
If true, this would be the end of an odyssey that began back in 2012 when Paul made his intentions very clear:

The Dark Tower is fast becoming a pleasant reality, as a string of announcements have put the long suffering project back on the road to reality. An even better sign is the possible news that Aaron Paul's lobbying during an earlier iteration of the Stephen King adaptation may have paid off, as sources claim his beloved role of Eddie Dean is in the bag. Be careful before you get too excited about Aaron Paul's possible role in The Dark Tower, as even Blastr is taking the news with as much salt as they can spare. Still, without 100% confirmation in their hands, the site trusts their sources enough to put out the good word that the New York junkie from our side of the door will be yelling "Yeah, bitch!" when he crosses over into the world of Roland the Gunslinger. Here's a quick history lesson on how we...

But this September, Marvel will release the first issue of a new series that will delve into a new corner of King’s Dark Tower saga.

I really wish it wasn't taking so damn long for Stephen King's The Dark Tower to get to the big screen. I love that story, and I love the plan that Ron Howard, Akiva Goldsman, and Brian Grazer came up with to bring it to life. There was supposed to be a trilogy of films and a TV series in between each film to tell as much of the story as they possibly can. Now it looks like we'll be lucky to get one movie.
Several major studios have stupidly passed on the movie, and right now they are looking at getting independent financing, but that is going to take some time. Regardless of all the bumps in the road, the movie is still moving forward. We have an update on it from Goldsman in an interview with Collider.

This week while promoting his film Hellion (above) at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival, actor Aaron Paul revealed an interesting tidbit of news about a gestating, ambitious project that just can't seem to get off the ground. The story behind "The Dark Tower's" road to becoming a movie is long and filled with many twists and turns. J.J. Abrams was interested in adapting the Steven King series of novels as far back as 2007, though he later dropped out. Ron Howard was also connected to the films, but Universal eventually pulled their support from the project and Warner Bros. passed.
That doesn't mean all hope is lost, however. AICN caught up with "Breaking Bad" star Aaron Paul at Sundance and he reveals that meetings have taken place to put him in the franchise, which includes a trilogy of movies and a possible TV series, as the character Eddie Dean.

Earlier today we reported that Breaking Bad's Aaron Paul has had a "ton of meetings" regarding the role of Eddie Dean in Ron Howard's take on The Dark Tower. Now obviously if actors are taking meetings, that means there's finally some movement on the ambitious movie/tv crossover adaptation, so The Schmoes did some digging and turned up the following. "Ron Howard is going to make this with Mrc and Imagine for around 60 million or so. And he’s likely doing this next. There’s going to be a TV series as well since it’s Mrc and I’m thinking it may end up being at Netflix." Oh, and one more thing: he hears Liam Neeson is interested. Now he didn't elaborate, so we're just assuming it's for the lead role of Roland Dechain..after all there aren't really any other main roles Neeson could play. That's...

I've been curious about what's currently going on with Ron Howard's feature film adaptation of Stephen King's The Dark Tower series. It's been awhile since we've heard anything. The film was announced back in 2010, and the last we heard it got delayed. Over the years both Javier Bardem and Russell Crowe have been reportedly attached to the project as the lead character, Roland Deschain. Now it looks like another actor could eventually end up being cast. During a recent interview with AICN, Breaking Bad star Aaron Paul says he's been meeting with Howard for the character of Eddie Dean, which would be pretty badass!

Since the end of AMC's "Breaking Bad," actor Aaron Paul has been in demand for various film and TV projects, one of which being "Need for Speed" opening in March.
Now, speaking with AICN, he revealed he's also been in consideration for the elaborate film trilogy/two-season limited series adaptation of Stephen King's fantasy saga "The Dark Tower". Specifically he seems suited for the role of Eddie Dean, a character introduced in the second book. He says:
"I've had a ton of meetings on that. I just had a general sit down with Ron Howard, who is a huge fan of the show (Breaking Bad), which is such a crazy thing to even think that Ron Howard even knows who I am. They're definitely planning on making it. I'm excited. Their goal is to do three films, but also have a television element to it, which will be very interesting.

My prayers to the Man Jesus have been heard. Now let.s hope they are answered. As a huge fan of both Breaking Bad (so brilliant) and Stephen King.s Dark Tower series (probably the best story he.s ever told), I.ve been steadily tracking the process of . and obstacles facing . the ongoing adaptation of the multi-part literary franchise. Ron Howard has been involved with the project in assorted stages, and it seems he took a series of meetings with an ideal actor for Eddie Dean . Aaron Paul, bitches! We.ve heard this before. But Paul was in Sundance recently promoting a new film, and was asked by Ain.t It Cool News about the Dark Tower books and whether he.d ever been considered for Dean. The character is a strung-out junkie pulled into a mystical realm by the story.s main hero, Roland, a gunslinger. Dean becomes...

To say “Breaking Bad” was a great launching pad for Aaron Paul’s career is probably the understatement of the century. Now, the show may have landed him another amazing gig, according to Ain’t It Cool News. AICN caught up with Paul at Sundance where he is promoting “Hellion” and when the possibility was raised, Paul [...]

Back in September, Ron Howard renewed Stephen King fans' hope for an adaptation of King's beloved series, "The Dark Tower," revealing that he and screenwriting partner Akiva Goldsman were still hard at work on bringing the books to the big screen. Now, actor Aaron Paul has rekindled interest in the project with the recent revelation that he's been in touch with Howard about taking a role in the movies.
Ain't It Cool News caught up with Paul at the Sundance Film Festival, and asked if rumors that he was up for the part of Eddie Dean were true.
"I've had a ton of meetings on that," Paul told the site. "I just had a general sit down with Ron Howard, who is a huge fan of the show (Paul's recently-wrapped series "Breaking Bad"), which is such a crazy thing to even think that Ron Howard even knows who I am.

It's been a while since we heard anything substantial regarding Ron Howard's ambitious take on The Dark Tower, but now almost by chance we have an update from an actor who may well be involved in the production. While chatting to Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad, Need For Speed) at Sundance about his new film Hellion, AICN's Quint mentions that he's always thought he'd make a great Eddie Dean in a Dark Tower adaptation, and not only does Paul confirm that one is still on the cards, but also reveals he's had "a ton of meetings" regarding that very role. Here's the guts of their conversation. Quint: For what it’s worth when I watched the first season of Breaking Bad I immediately thought you’d be perfect as Eddie Dean in a Dark Tower movie. I don’t know if you’ve read those books… Aaron Paul: I have not read them all.

Stephen King's "The Dark Tower" has had a difficult time in its journey to the big screen. The plan for the series film and TV outing was announced back in 2010 and since then there have been little developments, until now. In an interview with Ain't It Cool News , after being told he should play the role of Eddie Dean, Breaking Bad 's Aaron Paul says he's had meetings with Ron Howard about the series "I've had a ton of meetings on that. I just had a general sit down with Ron Howard, who is a huge fan of the show (Breaking Bad), which is such a crazy thing to even think that Ron Howard even knows who I am. Warner Bros.. planned adaptation of Stephen King.s massive The Dark Tower series has stalled. Last we heard, the studio passed on an elaborate plan that would have spread King.s story across multiple feature films and a television series. But even though the project.s on the shelf, that hasn.t stopped fans in high places from speculating on the franchise.s future. Case in point: Breaking Bad Emmy winner Aaron Paul took to Twitter last night to claim that playing reformed junkie Eddie Dean in King.s story is a .Huge dream of mine.. Those of us who.ve read King.s story promptly had our brains melted by the mere suggestion of Paul playing Eddie. It.s so perfect a casting choice that Damon Lindelof chimed in with the Tweet, .You would be the best Eddie ever.. And he would. Dean is a New York junkie pulled...

Ron Howard's ambitious adaptation of Stephen King's Dark Tower may never get made at this rate, but Aaron Paul is happy to volunteer for one of the saga's biggest roles in reformed junkie Eddie Dean. A fan suggested the part to Paul on Twitter, and apparently he's thought it through. "Trust me. Huge dream of mine," he wrote. Lost's Damon Lindelof, once attached to the adaptation, cosigned Paul as "the best Eddie ever." King has called Breaking Bad "an American classic" — care to weigh in, Uncle Stevie?...

New York, NY – If you've ever been to a Skrillex concert, you'll know that tickets can be hard to come by and there's a good chance your standards of personal space were replaced by fist pumping teens as you find yourself questioning the fire code in between sets. Last month we ran an excerpt from The Wind Through the Keyhole provided by publisher Donald M. Grant. Today, Simon & Schuster released their own excerpt which contains additional text.
Stephen King’s latest book in The Dark Tower series will be released on April 24th. The Wind Through the Keyhole features Roland Deschain in his early days and is said to bridge the gap between books 4 and 5.
—
Foreword
Most of the people holding this book have followed the adventures of Roland and his band—his ka-tet—for years, some of them from the very beginning. Others—and I hope there are many, newcomers and Constant Readers alike—may ask, Can I read and enjoy this story if I haven’t read the other Dark Tower books? My answer is yes, if you keep a few things in mind.
First, Mid-World lies next to our world, and there are many overlaps.

No car this holiday weekend? So you’re stuck in the city and can’t find your way down the shore or out to the island. Fear not. Instead of wasting away the days frying on your co-op’s sweltering rooftop listening to a senior’s book club yap while you’re daydreaming of a better life, why not join the 25,000 others who’ll be dancing their cares away right in your backyard? There’s still time to grab tickets and join in on inaugural Dance Here Now Festival. Pacha Nightclubs presents the first of its kind event on NYC’s Governors Island this weekend, July 1-4, bringing together world class acts, top notch sound and one hell of a view.

Last week, Stephen King fans were disappointed to learn that Ron Howard's plans to turn King's seven- (and soon to be eight-) book epic into a hybrid film-and-tv project might be derailed by budgetary concerns. Universal -- which signed on as a distributor -- apparently balked at the proposed cost of the ambitious plans.
But, according to the Hollywood Reporter, Howard and his partners on the project have committed to bringing down costs. The script is in rewrite -- so will this mean fewer special effects or less realistic Billy Bumblers?
Another possibility: A smaller budget could scare away Javier Bardem -- the actor had reportedly signed on to star in the project. Also rumored to be circling a role: "The Walking Dead's" Norman Reedus who, according to MTV News, is up for the role of junkie-turned-gunslinger Eddie Dean.

Things aren't looking good for "The Dark Tower," Ron Howard's ambitious film trilogy and television adaptation of Stephen King's best-selling novel series. After getting off to a nice start with Oscar-winning actor Javier Bardem in the lead role of Roland Deschain, it now appears that the plug might be pulled over rising budget costs and some creative concerns.
But until official word comes down the line telling us that the Gunslinger's journey is completely off the table, we'll keep our eyes out for future "Dark Tower" developments... which brings us to today's tease of a potential new cast member.
Casting rumors are a dime a dozen these days, so when we were browsing "The Walking Dead" star Norman Reedus' IMDb page last week, we didn't pay too much mind to his supposed attachment to "The Dark Tower" as recovering junkie turned gunslinger Eddie Dean. We caught up...

The Stephen King Dark Tower franchise machine is starting to build up some exciting momentum with the recent news that Javier Bardem is very close to signing on for the project as the iconic lead character of the series, Roland Deschain. This mixed but widely approved casting news has now been followed up with the very positive sounding announcement from Deadline.com that Mark Verheiden has joined the solid looking talent forming behind the camera and will Co-Write and Executive Produce alongside Akiva Goldsman.
Mark Verheiden is a very talented and experienced writer with a proven track record for strong TV series contributions, it’s what the Dark Tower films and TV series need to give a voice to the stunning and complex source material that will hopefully stay true or as close to the seven Dark Tower books that the fans will expect. Verheiden has previously written and Executive Produced the likes of Heroes,...

For months, Javier Bardem has been in talks for the role of Roland the Gunslinger in the big-screen version of The Dark Tower, and sources close to the production say he is just weeks away from finalizing the deal. But with that key component in place for Ron Howard’s adaptation of Stephen King’s fantasy epic, which will span three feature films and two TV miniseries, it’s time to take a closer look at who should play some of the other key roles in Roland’s ka-tet (King’s word for the team joined by fate for the...

In another post about my dream cast for The Dark Tower, the seven-part series by Stephen King about to be adapted for the screen by director Ron Howard, I put Kevin Zegers in the role of Eddie Dean. But, it was a tough call as many actors could do a fantastic job playing the wild but charming junkie who joins the Gunslinger's ka-tet.
To start, I've heard many suggest the actor who recently exploded with 500 Days of Summer and Inception, Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

From Viggo Mortensen to Javier Bardem, there are plenty of names floating around for the coveted role of Roland Deschain in "The Dark Tower." Ron Howard certainly has his work cut out for him in terms of finding his gunslinger, perhaps the single most adored figure in all of Stephen King's catalogue.
But Roland isn't the only major role that Howard needs to fill. There are other integral players from the nefarious Man in Black to recovering drug addict Eddie Dean. Then, of course, there's Susannah Dean.
King has said before that he always envisioned Angela Bassett as an ideal actress for Susannah, but given Bassett's current age, her casting doesn't seem likely. It seems especially unlikely given a new rumor that the part of Susannah is Naomie Harris' for the taking.
The New York Post has the rumor, stating quite simply and without attribution: "'Pirates of the...

The La Times’ Hero Complex ran an impressively in-depth article exploring Ron Howard‘s barely in the works, multi-platform adaptation of Stephen King‘s über-tale, The Dark Tower (and I wrote up a post examining what details Deadline could pull from Howard). Now Moviefone explores the supposed shortlist of leading men in consideration for the lead role of Roland of Gilead, the last gunslinger of a quasi-futuristic (and weirdly familiar) world, with his all-consuming quest to find the Dark Tower.
The role call (ha! get it?): Viggo Mortensen, Daniel Craig, Hugh Jackman, and Jon Hamm. All of these actors are stars, they’d all give the role a nice weight, and – perhaps most importantly – they’d attract the kind of budget required to pull off what Howard and producer-writer Akiva Goldsman have in mind.
