He started out as a writer for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. He also worked as a freelance photographer and magazine editor.
As a child,

He had six toes amputated in 2001, the lingering result of having suffered frostbite while flying bombing missions in World War II.

in the mid-1960s as a photographer for the United States Information Agency and became his photographer of choice.
