Wow! Prime stop-motion animation from the heyday of monstrous science fiction, in a new restoration that puts a brilliant shine on those creepy crawly critters. Richard Denning fights giant arachnids while Mara (swoon) Corday frets and wrings her hands, waiting for the next kissing scene. The new scan clears up a lot of flaws, and gives us a much better look at the Lost Art of stop-motion magic.

A 1997 episode of Pokemon contains an unexpected homage to Ray Bradbury's The Fog Horn - the loose basis for a pivotal 50s monster movie.
There's a certain pleasure in spotting pop culture references in animated shows aimed at kids, whether it's unmistakeable allusions to Goodfellas in Animaniacs or The dude from The Big Lebowski showing up in an episode of Powerpuff Girls. An early episode of the animated TV series Pokemon, meanwhile, took the unusual step of spending a large chunk of its duration on paying homage to one of America's most distinguished genre writers.

I'll trade you two RKOs for two Warners', an even swap! This quartet of movie-magic wonderments offer a full course on old-school film effects wizardry at its best. Willis O'Brien passes the baton to disciple Ray Harryhausen, who dazzles us with his own effects magic for the first '50s giant monster epic. And the best monster thriller of the decade is offered at its original widescreen aspect ratio. It's all special enough to merit a mid-week review.
