Released by a train crash, a mysterious creature rampages through a small Ohio town. The military is on its trail, the local authorities are overwhelmed, and a group of local kids… who planned to spend their summer making a zombie movie… take it upon themselves to figure out what’s going on. That’s the set-up for director J.J. Abrams’ 2011 film Super 8 (watch it Here) – and it’s time for it to be Revisited.
Like many aspiring filmmakers, J.J. Abrams started making movies at a young age, casting his friends and shooting on Super 8 film. As a teenager, he was able to participate in a young filmmakers’ festival in Los Angeles. Newspaper coverage of that festival caught the attention of one of Abrams’ heroes, another director who had gotten started making Super 8 movies when he was young: Steven Spielberg. Although Abrams and Spielberg didn’t meet at that time,...

After last week’s offbeat slate of home media releases, things are back on track this Tuesday, with a wildly eclectic assortment of titles headed home just in time for the Halloween season. If somehow you haven’t been adding any of the Blumhouse movies to your home collections over the years, you can now play catch-up rather easily with their Blumhouse of Horrors: 10-Movie Collection. Vinegar Syndrome is once again doing the dark lord’s work with their releases of Pandemonium and The Caller, and Severin Films is showing some love to both Cruel Jaws and Massacre in Dinosaur Valley, too.
Scream Factory has put together a brand new collector’s edition Blu-ray for Ghost Ship that arrives this week, and if you’re someone who digs on “banana pants” cinematic experiences, you’ll definitely want to pick up Agfa’s Blu-ray for Sometimes Aunt Martha Does Dreadful Things.

"Well, what if I told you I had a plan? It's the only thing powerful enough to stop what's coming." Magnet Releasing has debuted the first official trailer for a very weird, global-scale indie sci-fi film of sorts titled Higher Power, about a gamma ray that gives a human on Earth some crazy impressive superpowers. This is very hard to describe, you just have to dive into the footage. The official description is fairly vague as well, only explaining that "when the Universe decides what it wants, it's pointless to resist." You'll get a sense of this in the trailer. Starring Ron Eldard as Joe Steadman, who reminds me a lot of a young Jeff Daniels in Dumb & Dumber. The cast includes Jade Tailor, Austin Stowell, Jordan Hinson, Colm Feore, Tom Wright, and Laura Margolis. This actually looks pretty cool, and a bit weird. It's worth a watch, for sure.

We revisit Drop Dead Fred, starring the late, great Rik Mayall...
Hey, snotfaces, what do you get when you mix Mary Poppins and Beetlejuice? Look no further than 1991's Drop Dead Fred, a fantasy comedy about an imaginary friend, which turns out to be about a woman's mental breakdown after years and years of emotional abuse.
If you're of a certain age and, much like Phoebe Cates' protagonist Elizabeth at the beginning of the movie, you haven't seen Fred since you were a child, you may remember it as a childhood staple that you were probably a bit young to be watching and for many, it might have been your introduction to Mayall's comic stylings. However, also like Lizzie, Fred's anarchic behaviour has different implications when you meet him again in adulthood.
He first re-emerges after Lizzie has lost the three major totems of adulthood - her marriage,...

Good day, horror fans. The scariest thing about this week might just be the complete lack of big horror releases in theaters. Arguably the biggest debut is Gregory Levasseur.s Egypt-set supernatural horror The Pyramid, but it wasn.t even given that wide of a berth. (It isn.t playing where I live, which may or may not be inside of a haunted pyramid.) There.s also Erik Skjoldbjærg.s Norwegian thriller Pioneer, but that.s got an even smaller release window. On the VOD front, December 5th saw the release of the thriller Poker Night, which stars Ron Perlman, Titus Welliver, Giancarlo Esposito and Ron Eldard. (Go watch The Babadook if you haven.t yet.) In smaller news, Uwe Boll has taken to Indiegogo to try and fund the presumably violent sequel Rampage 3: No Mercy. (Why?) The highly anticipated sci-fi thriller Z for Zachariah, starring Chiwetel Ejiofor and...

As an avid Texas Hold’em player, I’ve honed my ability to read statuesque poker faces concealing the slightest tell (a subconscious sign revealing your rival’s hand). Sure, developing such a sleuthy skill has helped build a nice bankroll for my casino trips, but I’ve also carried this talent over into my film criticism as well. Just because a movie isn’t human doesn’t mean there aren’t tells scattered about the script and screen, as filmmakers unintentionally show their hand long before the cards are flipped. Foreshadowing, heavy-handed-dialogue, condemning red herrings – it’s not that hard to spot a tell.
Squaring off against Greg Francis’ Poker Night, I didn’t expect to face an opponent with Daniel “Kid Poker” Negreanu’s swagger. Establishing itself as a criminal thriller, we meet a police officer named Jeter (Beau Mirchoff) the night he’s abducted by a masked...

Ashton Kutcher is terrific in “Jobs,” but the true stars are the geeks who look like angelic children from another planet: Josh Gad (Steve Wozniack), Lukas Haas, Ron Eldard, Nelson Franklin, Eddie Hassell. They are not famous, but they represent the creative mind at work and at play. They are the intellectual pool from which Steve Jobs got his ideas. And creativity is what this film, directed by Josh Stern and written masterfully by Matt Whiteley, is about. The creative process and how suits can destroy a living creative force like Apple Computer. Watching Steve Jobs (Ashton Kutcher) direct and manage.

Film: "Jobs"; Cast: Ashton Kutcher, Dermot Mulroney, Josh Gad, Lukas Haas, Matthew Modine, J.K. Simmons, Lesley Ann Warren, Ron Eldard, Ahna O'Reilly, Victor Rasuk and John Getz; Director: Joshua Michael Stern; Rating: **1/2
Steven Jobs, the late CEO and co-founder of Apple, was a fascinating man. His personal and professional life had elements intriguing and enchanting, thus making his story inspirational and motivating.
The film "Jobs" attempts to demystify this genius starting from the myth and working its way back, showing the hard work and heartbreak that he endured. The narration begins in 2001, with a frail and lanky Jobs moving with an awkward gait on the podium. He delivers a straight-faced speech and with diffused.

Chicago – The revolution in technology, that has allowed the world to change completely in just two generations, was led in part by dreamers in a garage. One of those “Edisons” was Steve Jobs – the creator of Apple Computers – portrayed with an inventor’s instinct by Ashton Kutcher.
Rating: 3.5/5.0
Kutcher, and the approach that director Joshua Michael Stern and writer Matt Whiteley took with the character of Steve Jobs, are the highlights of the film. There is great respect toward the passion in the dreamers and innovations, and that type of creativity that changes our way of doing and thinking. Where the film doesn’t score points is within the “inside baseball” elements of the Apple Computer corporation. There is too much time given to boardrooms, marketing managers and staffing decisions, and while this is intriguing, it isn’t as interesting as the reflective vision that Steve Jobs gave his products.

Chicago – The new film about the founder of Apple Computers, “Jobs,” is a tour de force for Ashton Kutcher, in his portrayal of Steve Jobs. Opposite to him is familiar character actor Josh Gad, as Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak. Creating the ethereal atmosphere in the film is director Joshua Michael Stern.
Josh Gad and Joshua Michael Stern were recently in Chicago on a promotional tour for their new film, and provided insight to capturing the essence of what made those two “Steves” tick. Josh Gad has been a journeyman actor, cast in five TV series over the years (like “1600 Penn”), character film parts (“The Internship”) and in his most high profile, originating the character of Elder Arnold Cunningham on opening night of the Broadway smash “The Book of Mormon.” Joshua Michael Stern made his directorial debut with “Neverwas” (2005), and followed that up with “Swing Vote” (2008).

Super 8
Written and Directed by J.J. Abrams
2011, USA
So I know it’s Alien Invasion Month and that the key requirements of Sound on Sight’s ongoing theme are quite simple: a) aliens and b) invading. I also know that apart from the U.S. military’s invasion of small town Ohio, there’s not a whole lot of that second part in J.J. Abrams’ Super 8, least of all from its star extraterrestrial, a recently escaped interplanetary alien-spider-gorilla who’s been exacting revenge on the government that studied him by abducting townsfolk and household appliances to rebuild his ship constructed from white, morphing Rubiks cubes. It’s all very technical, if you must know.
Super 8 begins, in prototypical Spielbergian fashion, with a broken home. Joe (Joel Courtney) sits on a snow-covered swingset, clutching in one hand the locket of his mother, all while his father and the...

Here is the first trailer for the Steve Jobs biopic, Jobs starring Ashton Kutcher. He will play the Apple founder in what looks like a very safe by-the-numbers movie. It reminded me a lot of the movie Flash of Genius with Greg Kinnear playing Robert Kearns who takes on the Detroit automakers who he claims stole his idea for the intermittent windshield wiper. Note: Dermot Mulroney starred in that movie as well as Jobs, he’s like the go to biopic sidekick. That was a good movie, but like Jobs would likely play out better on TV instead – because it’s just not that interesting.
The trailer likes to make out that Jobs was “The Original Innovator”, “The Original Rebel”, and “The Original Visionary” because movies lie. There was a lot of innovation before the 1970′s I’m pretty sure. But look, Ashton Kutcher tucks in his shirt just like Steve Jobs…...

Spoiler alert! Before you read our exclusive interview with Joelle Carter, Justified’s Ava Crowder, make sure you’ve watched this week’s episode, “Peace of Mind,” written by Taylor Elmore and Leonard Chang and directed by Gwyneth Horder-Payton. With Drew Thompson now in custody, the mad scramble continues as Ellen May (Abby Miller) is on the run with Raylan (Timothy Olyphant) Nicky Augustine (Mike O’Malley) and Boyd Crowder (Walton Goggins) giving chase. Carter spoke with us about “Peace of Mind” as well as many memorable scenes throughout the season.
BuzzFocus: Let’s jump right in and talk about last night’s episode, “Peace of Mind,” an outstanding episode for Ava Crowder, who returned to the Noble’s Holler with $500,000 of Theo Tonin’s money to get Ellen May and it ends up in another friendship destruction for Ava.

Justified, Season 4, Episode 11: “Decoy”
Written by Graham Yost and Chris Provenzano
Directed by Michael Watkins
Airs Tuesdays at 10pm Et on FX
Some of you multiplex-frequenters might have checked out Kim Jee-woon’s The Last Stand this past January, in which a seemingly unstoppable cartel badass has to make his way through a sleepy border town guarded by Deputy Sheriff Arnold Schwarzenegger in order to escape safely to Mexico. Despite having about one thirtieth the budget and half the runtime of that sorry effort, “Decoy” manages to take a classic Western template – the armed standoff – and pack it in with far more thrills, tense setpieces, incredible performances, and winning dialogue. This is one for the books.
TV is a medium defined by its limitations. 22 or 44 minutes to tell a story. Minimal budget. Contracts to honor. Content restrictions. Episode orders. Fan service. “Decoy” is Justified‘s version of going “all out,...

Ashton Kutcher‘s take on Steve Jobs will not come out on April 19th, 2013 as had been expected since the Apple company celebrates its 37th anniversary that day. Open Road Films, which picked up the film in January before it closed the Sundance Film Festival, has yet to set a new release date. The distrib of the film reportedly requires more time to market the film. The indie Steve Jobs biopic previously titled jOBS, the distrib has also made the wise decision of omitting the Apple-speak and simply retitling it Jobs. Partially shot in the Palo Alto, Calif., garage that was Apple’s birthplace, Joshua Michael... David Meunier has seen his share of backstabbing and intrigue on “Justified.” As Johnny Crowder, he was next in line to take over his family’s crime syndicate after his Uncle Bo (M.C. Gainey) -- until wayward cousin Boyd (Walton Goggins) got in his way. When Johnny tipped Boyd off about his uncle's Oxy shipment, Bo retaliated by shooting his nephew in the stomach, subsequently putting him in a wheelchair. With Bo dead and Boyd now running the Crowder family business, Johnny feels more than a bit supplanted -- he blames Boyd for his state and wants revenge. He also has some lingering desire for Boyd’s fiancée, Ava (Joelle Carter), which doesn’t help cousinly relations. “Justified,” now in its fourth season, finds Johnny back in the forefront as he enacts a stealthy, multi-pronged attack on Boyd, partnering with Dixie Mafia head Wynn Duffy (Jere Burns) to kill him...

“In the words of Arlo Givens, ‘I’m trying to knock some goddamn sense into you.’”
Those words spoken by Raylan quoting his recently, but not so dearly departed father speaks loudly about what tack Raylan Givens uses in his course as a Us Marshal. It’s evident in Raylan’s youth that he clearly had two dividing lines in his parental guidance, his mother who we’ve never seen; was more of a high road mentality and Arlo was the kind of person who’d just as soon give someone a shit sandwich to right the wrongs against his wife. And that makes sense from what we know about Arlo, and the fact that no one even attempts to sugarcoat Arlo even after his death. Even Hunter Mosely,...

Even more than in past years, Season 4 of "Justified" has been about family.
Raylan (Timothy Olyphant) has of course been caught up in a cold case that involved his father, and Boyd (Walton Goggins) and Ava (Joelle Carter) have gotten engaged. There's another family angle at play as well, though -- Johnny Crowder's (David Meunier) resentment of Boyd for bringing in an outsider, Colton Rhodes (Ron Eldard), to help run his criminal enterprises.
Johnny has made no secret of his dislike for Colt, and in last week's episode he carried out a plan to prove Colt had been lying about killing Ellen May (Abby Miller), who had in fact escaped from him and, as the audience knows, is hiding out with Sheriff Shelby Parlow (Jim Beaver).
"The driving force behind the animosity in that relationship in the first place was that Boyd brings in this outsider who Johnny doesn't know,...

In ‘Outlaw,’ we really see the stakes that can be raised in this seemingly fruitless hunt for Drew Thompson. In a way, it’s like watching the chess pieces move around and around, although it isn’t as boring as you would think it to be. In fact, it’s all about the vicious cunning that all criminals and lawman possess in Harlan County. It made for a damn tense episode and a great mark for how this season’s being handled, while keeping the personal slant that this season has been inundating on the viewer.
Anything involving Boyd Crowder this week was expertly done. Again, it’s that motif of showing just how smart the criminals can be despite the aura of low-rent conniver they can give off.

Early in the episode, Art Mullen throwing out his patented sarcastic puns, cheerily drops a famous quote from another detective, albiet one from long ago. “The game is afoot,” he coyly pops off to Raylan, who could be seen as a rougher, tougher backwoods Sherlock Holmes, but never has a statement, even one in jest carried this much weight. Almost all of ‘Foot Chase’ is spent hunting for a man very near death from a forced amputation, and finding this fellow is very important because he may have all the information in the world about the most hunted man in Harlan, the mysterious Drew Thompson.
It’s great to see someone paired up with Raylan, and seeing Jim Beaver’s Shelby paired up with him works quite well.

Steve Jobs left an indelible mark on modern technology. Apple, the company he co-founded and ran for several years, is a juggernaut in the modern market, and was the driving force behind several items that are now commonplace. A biopic on the individual was announced soon after his death, with a script from first-time writer Matt Whitely, and direction by Swing Vote helmer Joshua Michael Stern. That 70s Show and Two and a Half Men star Ashton Kutcher takes on the titular role of Jobs, with a supporting cast that includes James Woods, Dermot Mulroney, Josh Gad, Ron Eldard, Matthew Modine, Lukas Haas, Kevin Dunn, Lesley Ann Warren, and Jk Simmons. The first clip from the movie, which will make its premiere at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival, has been released, and can be seen below.

Are you ready for a new season of Face Off already?

Speaking to the TCA, PBS President Paula Kerger was asked about the delay between the debut of Downton Abbey in the UK and their debut on PBS. Unfortunately, Kerger replied that January seems like a good time for the show. In other words, U.S. fans should expect to spend more time avoiding spoilers.
My first reaction to reading TMZ's report that Ann Romney turned down Dancing with the Stars was a hostile eye roll, but after a little thought I'm a little sad we won't get to see what kind of Saturday Night Live gold Kate McKinnon could turn that into.
Is an ad boasting "Enough episodes of Glee to make you question your sexuality" homophobic? Jezebel isn't sure. Honestly, it gave me a chuckle but Glee is its own universe when it comes to determining context.

When we last left Raylan Givens (Timothy Olyphant) and company, his father Arlo (Raymond J. Barry) confessed to killing Devil, thereby letting Boyd Crowder (Walton Goggins) free to be the diminutive crime lord he was born to be; Limehouse (Mykelti Williamson) lopped off Quarles’ (Neil McDonough) arm with a cleaver; and a pregnant Winona (Natalie Zea) wouldn’t take Raylan back. In only the first episode of Season 4, entitled “Hole in the Wall,” the wrongs of Season 3 are already righted. While thoroughly enjoyable, last season was plagued by having too many villains, and none of them possessed the incredible, Emmy-winning fortitude of Margo Martindale‘s Harlan County crime boss Mags Bennett. Two seasons later, we will never forget you and your Apple Pie. This season, Boyd is still the big bad it seems, and he’s going to be rivaled by a young preacher from a new fundamentalist church, Billy (former child star from Jurassic Park, Joseph Mazzello...

In a recent blog post summing up the joys of watching Justified, Vulture’s Matthew Zoller Seitz compared the show to Cheers – not because the shows share thematic or structural DNA, mind, but because the act of diving back into the show’s criminal funhouse version of Harlan County, Ky, recalled for Seitz the act of popping into an episode of Cheers and being comfortably immersed in a very clearly realized setting and set of characters, not to mention a generally stellar standard of writing. Watching the talky-but-violent, whip-smart fourth season premiere, “Hole in the Wall,” it’s easy to see his point, even if the comparison seems odd at first glance.

God bless us, Raylan Givens is back.
Last season of Justified was a spiraling taut pulp tale of corruption amongst gangsters, politicians and drug runners. All these plot elements intertwined with a lockjaw precision, a reckless abandon that was still just restrained enough to be a mighty fine potboiler of a season. There were elements that I loved like Robert Quarles and the drug baron Limehouse. There were all these crackerjack elements that tied together, but it was big, it was a massive story. So, this year they changed us up, starting with a personal story out, starting with a dead skydiver (and that was a shocking set piece from the opening of the episode, and a rather gory one at that) and the drivers license of a...
