Fox Corp.’s broadcast subsidiary and No. 2 station group Sinclair have reached a multi-year renewal covering Fox affiliates in 25 markets.
The stations reach about 11% of U.S. TV households.
“We are pleased that we have reached agreements with Fox to continue our long-standing relationship. These renewals reflect the mutually beneficial network-affiliate model, which integrates the network’s primetime and sports programming with our stations’ local news and syndicated content,” Barry Faber, president of distribution and network relations for Sinclair, said in a press release.
Added Mike Biard, president of operations and distribution for Fox, “This new agreement extends our valued relationship with Sinclair and ensures that millions of consumers will continue to enjoy Fox’s leading sports and entertainment content from the No. 1 broadcast network of the television season.”
In an industry increasingly wracked by distribution tension as the pay-tv bundle frays and cord-cutting accelerates, Fox Corp. has seen its share of carriage disputes.

Just in time for Friday’s Chicago Cubs season opener, Comcast and Sinclair Broadcast Group have renewed their carriage agreement, which includes the Cubs’ new TV home, Marquee Sports Network.
The multi-year deal covers retransmission consent of 78 Sinclair TV stations in 51 markets across Comcast’s cable footprint. It extends distribution for the Tennis Channel, 18 Fox-branded regional sports networks, and Yes Network for Xfinity TV customers. Xfinity is the service reaching the majority of cable homes served by Comcast, the No. 1 U.S. pay-tv operator.
Xfinity homes in the Chicago area will also get Marquee, the Rsn venture between Sinclair and the Cubs. Distribution for the new network had been in limbo even before the coronavirus hit. Sinclair announced the venture for Marquee in February 2019. The company also led a group that last year bought the former Fox RSNs, which were unloaded by Disney as part of the Disney-Fox deal...

Washington — A number of big media mergers have been scrapped in the face of regulatory opposition. The Sinclair-Tribune transaction didn’t just get canceled; it had a spectacular crash and burn.
The $3.9 billion combination would have created a dominant broadcast giant with more than 200 stations across the country, allowing Sinclair to scale up and greatly expand its reach in top 10 markets. Many speculated that Sinclair’s ambitions included launching a conservative news alternative to Fox News — even President Trump gave some credence to that in a recent tweet.
Instead, Tribune backed out of the deal and filed a $1 billion lawsuit on Thursday, accusing Sinclair of breaching its obligations to submit to necessary divestitures and other steps to get the deal cleared by federal regulators. The scrutiny on Sinclair’s business practices based on the details spelled out in Tribune’s complaint comes at a bad time for the Baltimore-based broadcaster.

Update. 1:55 Pm: Frontier Communications subscribers may have to live without Sinclair Broadcasting stations and the Tennis Channel for a while — maybe a long while. “There are no negotiations going on, and I have no expectations for any future negotiations,” Sinclair Evp of Distribution and Network Relations Barry Faber says. The problem? “We’re so far apart on the price” that Frontier should pay, Faber adds. The cable company had a low rate with Fisher Communications…...

Sinclair Broadcast Group is conducting an internal inquiry into an appearance made on one of its news programs by political pundit Armstrong Williams. Williams admitted last week he received more than $240,000 from the Department of Education to promote its No Child Left Behind initiative, a relationship he did not disclose to networks where he had discussed the subject, including CNN, as well as in his newspaper column syndicated by Tribune Media Services. Tribune has since terminated his column. Barry Faber, general counsel for Sinclair, a station group with holdings in 39 U.S. markets, disclosed that Williams was under contract last year as an independent consultant to the company and is believed to have interviewed Education Secretary Rod Paige on a Sinclair-produced nightly news program, "News Central", about No Child Left Behind. But he asserted that Sinclair had no knowledge of Williams' relationship with the Education Department.

Sinclair Broadcast Group's decision to pre-empt Friday's edition of "Nightline", devoted to airing photographs of U.S. soldiers killed in Iraq, drew a sharp rebuke from Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., while non-ABC affiliates and radio stations in Sinclair markets stepped in to carry ABC's broadcast. "There is no valid reason for Sinclair to shirk its responsibility in what I assume is a very misguided attempt to prevent your viewers from completely appreciating the extraordinary sacrifices made on their behalf by Americans serving in Iraq," McCain, a decorated Vietnam veteran and chairman of the Senate Commerce Committee, said in a letter to Sinclair president and CEO David Smith. In a swift response to McCain's comments, Smith attacked the "Nightline" special's objectivity. " 'Nightline' is not reporting news; it is doing nothing more than making a political statement," he wrote. Sinclair prepared its own news special to replace the banned "Nightline" special "addressing what has gone on in Iraq as well as addressing (the 'Nightline' pre-emption) issue," Sinclair general counsel Barry Faber said. Following requests from KTRS-AM in St. Louis and WHNS-TV, a Fox affiliate in Greenville, to broadcast the special, ABC News on Friday made the program available to the markets affected by Sinclair's decision. Other stations that aired "Nightline" on Friday included WPXS-TV, a Pax affiliate in St. Louis; Ohio News Network; WJTC-TV, a UPN affiliate in Mobile, Ala.; the New England Cable Network; and KWBM-TV, a WB Network affiliate in Springfield, Mo.
