After spending just over twelve years as a writer at “The Bold and the Beautiful,” Michele Val Jean is putting away her keyboard when it comes to writing material surrounding the Forresters, the Logans and the Spencers, among other families and characters featured in the popular CBS daytime drama series.
On Wednesday, it was revealed on X (formerly Twitter) that Val Jean would be leaving the soap where she had been a scriptwriter since January 2012, and comes fresh off the news that Patrick Mulcahey, her former colleague at both “The Bold and the Beautiful” and “General Hospital,” would now be spearheading the writing for long-running series alongside the show’s longest-tenured writer Elizabeth Korte.
Val Jean has yet to formally announce plans for what’s next in her life and career, particularly whether she’s looking to return to “General Hospital” to join Mulcahey and Korte as the show prepares...

In the event of a Writer Guild of America (WGA) strike next week, you can expect your favorite daytime soaps to do a lot of behind-the-scenes scrambling to make sure that the onscreen saga continues without repeats or substitution. Steve Burton is leaving The Young and the Restless!
The actor announced via Twitter that he won't be renewing his contract and will depart when it expires in December.
Burton was a long-time veteran of General Hospital and followed producer Jill Farren Phelps to The Young and the Restless when she made her move.

A lot has happened while I've been away.
I was in NY for CBS press day (summer prime time shows) and then at the Atx festival (all TV all the time!), and then this week The Young and the Restless was preempted three times. Meanwhile, the showrunner was fired, word is characters are on their way out...sheesh!
So, forgive me for my absences and if I miss anything that went down this week, because in case you didn't know, the Pittsburgh Penguins won the Stanley Cup, and a parade with over 300k people filling the streets gets priority in my hometown!
Now. Let's get to the good stuff. Ashley isn't the only one being driven nuts by Hillary.

Here’s something troubling about BrainDead, CBS’ new political dramedy from The Good Wife creators Robert and Michelle King: After watching three hour-long episodes, I can honestly say I wouldn’t be upset in the slightest if any of the central characters fell victim to the alien bugs feasting on the brains of Washington, D.C., power players and turning ’em all into deeply uncompromising, rabidly partisan monsters.

When Jeanne Cooper -- matriarch of "The Young And The Restless" for nearly 40 years -- passed away in May, fans of her character Kay Chancellor wondered how the daytime soap would manage to give her a proper sendoff.
Today, Friday, August 16, marks the beginning of CBS' multi-episode tribute that will culminate in Kay's loved ones finding out that she passed away while on a trip with her husband Murphy (Michael Fairman). Los Angeles — Love, loss, breakups, makeups, murder, mayhem, backstabbing, social climbing. Forget about a lifetime, that's just an afternoon on "The Young and the Restless."
The CBS show, daytime's top-rated soap since December 1988, hits the big 4-0 on Tuesday.
No one from its debut on March 26, 1973 – when it was just 30 minutes long – remains with the show, but Jeanne Cooper arrived six months later and is the longest-tenured cast member in her role as grand dame Katherine Chancellor.
"God knows it's claimed a big part of my life," the 84-year-old actress said, citing good writing and likable characters as reasons for the show's continued success in an era of dwindling daytime audiences, network budget-cutting and the cancellation of other soaps.
"Its foundation was set so well and you had core characters that you could grow and become involved with," Cooper said. "As you got older, they got a year older. Whether...

We're just days into 2013 but it's safe to say that Jill Farren Phelps, exec producer of The Young and the Restless, has scored the casting coup of the year. On Jan. 29, Emmy winner Steve Burton — who previously worked under Phelps when he played hit man Jason Morgan on General Hospital — will join Y&R as Dylan McAvoy, the presumed-dead ex-lover of lawyer Avery Clark (Jessica Collins). It's no secret in the suds world that Burton and Phelps are thick as thieves. In fact, they're currently teamed with actor James Franco on a telenovela in development at Sony. But how the heck did she land Burton for Y&R? Citing a need for normalcy, the fan fave left Gh just three months ago and relocated his family to a quiet homestead outside Nashville. Why's he back so soon? Phelps gave TV Guide Magazine the lowdown.

Steve Burton might not be done with daytime after all. According to TV Guide Magazine, the "General Hospital" veteran -- who recently concluded his storyline as hitman Jason Morgan -- has just booked a major role on "The Young and the Restless."
Sources tell Tvgm that Burton will join the cast of the CBS soap soon, with details of his role yet to be revealed. If true, the gig will see Burton reunited with "Gh" executive producer Jill Farren Phelps, who left the ABC soap in January 2012 and joined "Y&R" in July.
Burton quit "Gh" in August after more than two decades on the soap, telling TV Guide, "I've been through 21 years of ups and downs with 'Gh' -- regime changes, cast and crew changes, budget cuts, shakeups of one kind or another, and it's been nothing but a huge positive in my life and for my family. I have no complaints,...

Daytime TV vet Steve Burton, fresh off his run as General Hospital mobster Jason Morgan, next will surface on CBS’ The Young and the Restless.

While TV Guide Magazine, which first reported on the casting, says that details on Burton’s Y&R character have yet to be revealed, Daytime Confidential (among others) speculates that he will play Avery’s ex, Dylan McAvoy, who is a presumed-dead war vet. Such a “resurrection” surely would derail the romance between Avery (played by Jessica Collins) and Joshua Morrow’s Nick.

First, a show of hands: Who won’t miss the way-too-compact Newman ranch?
We certainly won’t, which is why Victor Newman’s new penthouse is a welcome step in the right direction for Executive Producer Jill Farren Phelps, as she continues to put her stamp on CBS’ The Young and the Restless. EW obtained this exclusive sneak peek of Eric Braeden (Victor Newman) and Melody Thomas Scott (the beloved Nikki, who continues to suffer from selective amnesia when it comes to the father of her children) as they first set eyes on their cosmopolitan new “home.”

The Young and the Restless may have found two newcomers who may (finally) help fans forget that Shemar Moore, aka Malcom Winters, ever lived and breathed in Genoa City.
Newcomer Redaric Williams (pictured, right), an international model who recently became the face of Carling Black Label in South Africa, will play the new role of Tyler Douglas. Lamon Archey (pictured left), another model making the transition to the small screen, will play a new dude named Mason. The CBS-Sony soap The Young and the Restless owed Josh Griffith a huge debt of gratitude when he did double duty as exec producer and head writer during the 2007-2008 Writers Guild strike. Not only did the three-time Emmy winning Griffith keep Y&R afloat during that treacherous time, he improved the show drastically. But no good deed goes unpunished in Soapland! When the strike was over, Griffith was pushed out. Now he's back as head writer, working with new exec producer Jill Farren Phelps to get this once-mighty serial back in shape after the devastating reign of Maria Bell.

Genoa City may be losing some attractive denizens (Goodbye Genie Francis! Farewell, Marcy Rylan!) but at least one longtime resident will continue holding court at the Athletic Club. Eric Braeden — aka Victor Newman to his fans, and The Mustache to his enemies — has signed a new deal with Y&R’s production company Sony TV that will keep him on the sudser for years to come.
“Very glad we got the negotiations successfully behind us,” Braeden said in a statement (which could certainly double as a terse little tweet). Terms of his multi-year deal were not released.

Least Shocking Reveal, Part 1: Us Weekly claims that Dianna Agron will only appear in a handful of Glee episodes, which is no surprise to anyone who picked up on the fact she not only was mysteriously Mia from the show’s season four cast photo, but more worrisome still, was seamlessly replaced in this week’s premiere by doppelgänger Kitty.
Least Shocking Reveal, Part 2: New photos of the Revenge cast feature a clearly-alive Victoria. Because we all really thought that the show was gonna off the best character on the canvas.

General Hospital is losing one of its longest-running and most important characters: Steve Burton, who has played Jason Morgan since 1991, will tape his last episode in September, he tells TV Guide. Duhn-duhn-duuuuhn. "I have no complaints, no negative feelings at all," he says, "but it's time to go." Burton's exit comes not long after Gh's long-time executive producer Jill Farren Phelps was pushed out, and it looks like the two of them, plus James Franco, are working on a new show together. According to Burton, Franco had so much fun working on Phelps's Hollywood Heights that he "want[ed] to make one of his own novellas." Such is Franco! "Jill will Ep it, I'll produce and star in it and so will James," Burton says. Take comfort, Port Charles residents.

Langford’S Picks And Pans
The L.A. Complex
It’s no secret that I am tired of coming out stories, but I am really enjoying Kal’s struggle with his sexuality. Maybe because even though it’s riddled with the usual clichés, it’s somewhat different in that it’s being told with a person of color This is a definite rarity and we’re getting a glimpse into the world of rap and how that plays into Kal’s hatred over his sexuality. It helps that Andra Fuller is doing a wonderful job in the role.
I loved his initial scene with the doctor where he saw to it that he didn’t have to leave the hospital and face the world again by confessing his continued suicidal thoughts, but I was disappointed that we didn’t get more interaction with Kal, his doctor and the other people in the hospital.

The duo replaces Maria Arena Bell, who became the sudser’s head writer and Ep after the 2007 Writer’s Strike. She crossed the picket line so she could write on the sudser that was created by her father-in-law, William Bell.
On her Facebook page, Bell indicated that she didn’t know why she was told to step down. “I am mystified as are my cast and crew.

Even as the big broadcast networks continue killing off or otherwise compromising their daily daytime dramas -- the only genre of television programming they can still call their own -- a basic cable network has stepped up to prove that soap operas don't have to die. They simply need to adapt to changing times. If that means migrating from broadcast to cable, so be it.
The network at the forefront of what could become just such a shift for soaps is Nick at Nite, which two weeks ago premiered a one-hour weeknight serial titled Hollywood Heights. Based on a Mexican telenovela titled Alcanzar una Estrella, Heights will play out until sometime in October with a total of eighty episodes.
