Pixar’s “Cars” have circled back around.
“Cars on the Road,” a connection of interlocking shorts that just premiered on Disney+ as part of the Disney+ Day festivities, follows Mater (Larry the Cable Guy) and Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson) as they embark on a cross-country road trip for Mater’s sister’s wedding. Along the way they check into a haunted house, join the circus and cross paths with bigfoot. The shorts are incredibly charming and fit perfectly within the already-established “Cars” universe.
TheWrap spoke with Steve Purcell, who wrote every episode and directed three of the nine shorts and Brian Fee, who directed three of the shorts (and directed the very underrated “Cars 3”). Purcell and Fee told us about reusing characters from the “Cars” movies, creating stop-motion animation in CGI and how a surf guitar helped soften a ghostly visitation.
Where did the idea for “Cars on the Road” come from?...

In Pixar’s new animated short-form series, “Cars on the Road” (currently streaming on Disney+), creator/director and animator Steve Purcell puts Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson) and Mater (Larry the Cable Guy) on a cross-country trek full of cinematic nostalgia. The stops include homages to the stop-motion dinosaurs of Ray Harryhausen, the Overlook Hotel from “The Shining,” and retro sci-fi movies.
“We wanted to send them on a road trip [to the wedding of Mater’s sister], and make it so that each place they stop was its own mini-adventure,” Purcell told IndieWire. “And that afforded us a lot of opportunity to create all these different, interesting locations, each with its own sensibility, style of music.”
Producer Marc Sondheimer added that in spite of the series’ short-form nature, it still contains 65 minutes of content. And it’s tied together in episodic form. “The launch of Disney+ afforded us a different form factor to tell these stories in...

When Disney+ launched in the Us last November, it was still shaking off the remnants of its former Netflix deal. Lingering ties to the streaming competitor meant that a few completist-irking gaps were left in the Us Disney+ Pixar catalogue. At launch, Coco, Up and Incredibles 2 weren’t available to American subscribers.
Not so for the UK. When Disney+ arrives on March 24th, it’s getting the full complement of Pixar. Films, shorts, you name it. That catalogue is fuller than Emile the Rat in a binful of tainted Camembert.
Don’t miss out on this Disney+ Pre-order Deal, on us!
So if you’re planning a Pixar marathon come the arrival of Disney+ (and really, is there a more wholesome lockdown activity than spotting every Pizza Planet truck, A113 or John Ratzenberger cameo in the animation studio’s back catalogue?), here’s what’s coming your way…

Announcing the nominees for their 16th annual Ves Awards, the Visual Effects Society brought welcome news for Denis Villeneuve’s “Blade Runner 2049” and Matt Reeves’s “War for the Planet of the Apes,” each up for seven statuettes. “Despicable Me 3” is the most-nominated animated film of the year (5), while the most-honored title overall is “Game of Thrones” (11).
The 21-year-old organization consists of 3,400-plus members in 35 nations. Each year, it recognizes visual effects innovators in film, animation, television, commercials, and video games.
In 2017, Disney’s “The Jungle Book” remake claimed five Ves trophies, more than any other feature (nominations leader “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” was shutout). It’s director-producer, Jon Favreau, will receive this year’s Lifetime Achievement Award; Weta Digital director and four-time Oscar winner Joe Letteri will accept the Georges Méliès Award, named for the late French illusionist and filmmaker. Some of our very favourite interviews completed are so often with the filmmakers behind animated productions. Particularly with Pixar, it seems that in order to qualify as a filmmaker at the company you not only need to be talented, but you have to be a really friendly person. This latest interview, with Cars 3 director Brian Fee, and producer Kevin Reher, perpetuated that sentiment.
We asked the affable duo about maintaining the spirit of the franchise and yet crafting something new with this third entry into the series, while they also discuss the accessibility of the endeavour, with plenty in here for parents to take away. In line with the themes of the movie, they discuss getting older, and whether they too had a role model in the industry, and some guidance, much like Lightning McQueen gets with Doc Hudson.

MaryAnn’s quick take… Three movies in, and this world of sentient driverless cars still creeps me out, and still does nothing except advertise a mountain of related merch for kids. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing
I’m “biast” (con): not a fan of this franchise
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
So, hotshot sentient driverless race car — dammit, three movies in, and that’s still creepy — Lightning McQueen has hit middle age. He’s not as fast as he used to be. The youngsters are nipping at his heels… tires… whatever… and lapping him on the track. What’s an automobile dude to do?
I have many questions about the scenario of Cars 3.
But… wait… Who designed and built the sleek new supercharged race cars nipping at Lighting McQueen’s heels?
Where are these vehicular youngsters coming from? Jackson Storm (the voice of Armie Hammer: Free Fire,...

Veteran racer Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson) is back where he belongs at the Piston Cup, but while he’s been away saving the world or whatever it was he got up to in Cars 2 a new wave of next-generation super-cars has started to dominate the competition. Crashing out during the final race of the season while attempting to overtake his would-be successor, Jackson Storm (Armie Hammer), Lightning returns to Radiator Springs to lick his wounds and recover. With a new sponsor by the name of Sterling (Nathan Fillion), and the threat of a premature retirement closing the distance, Lightning has it all to prove as he’s forced to retrain under the tutelage of Cruz Ramirez (Cristela Alonzo) and her high-tech simulators.

Cameos are nothing new in Pixar's Cars Universe, but they almost got a little bit batty in the latest installment, Cars 3.
In a recent interview with Screen Junkies, director Brian Fee said that in an early draft of the film, Lightning McQueen almost ended up going to a Hollywood party that would have been full of movie stars, including two different generations of Batmobiles. That scene didn't make the cut but it came pretty close. Fee said:
“At one point, part of the story took place in La and we had a scene where McQueen went to a Hollywood hills party and it was full of actors, and we had the old Batmobile and the new Batmobile talking to each other at a party.”
Fee doesn't explain exactly how much the Batmobiles would have been in the movie, but it would have been interesting to hear what they were talking about with each other.

Cars 3 proved the franchise still has plenty of gas in the tank.
The filmed opened over the weekend with strong box office numbers and reviews. The Pixar magic is still definitely there with their newest addition.

To get back in the game, he will need the help of an eager young race technician with her own plan to win, inspiration from the late Fabulous Hudson Hornet, and a few unexpected turns. While the Tupac biopic All Eyez on Me earned $3.1 million in Thursday previews ahead of Disney and Pixar's animated sequel Cars 3, which cruised to $2.8 million, Cars 3 is pulling ahead of Eyez in the early Friday estimates and looks as if the animated pic will take in about $20 million-plus for the day as it cruises toward a weekend in the mid-to-high $50 million range.
Cars and Cars 2 have earned more than $1 billion in combined worldwide box office. Cars 2 opened in 2011 to $66.1 million domestically, and went on to earn $562.1 million worldwide. I know I’m in the critical minority when admitting my enjoyment of the Cars franchise, but I honestly do. It’s not even that I am a “car guy” either—I’ve never seen the appeal of them beyond their utility as a transportation vehicle. So my enjoyment of the first film was solely on the level of its message and humor. It dealt with the theme of ego and humility as Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson) discovered you simply cannot get through life on an island alone. Cars 2 may not have put message in the foreground (Larry the Cable Guy‘s Mater taking center stage to teach kids about individuality, self-esteem, and courage), but it tried something different by projecting a pure entertainment genre (spy thriller) atop its existing world.
While the second didn’t possess the same lasting power as a result, it had merit if only because it was fun.

I personally love minimalist poster artwork, where marketing is done effectively with a less-is-more approach. Disney-Pixar just released this beautiful new minimalist poster with the tagline “A storm is coming” for their recently released film “Cars 3” by first-time director Brian Fee and starring Owen Wilson, Cristela Alonzo, Larry the Cable Guy and Chris Cooper. Chicago – The Cars movies continue to be the kiddieland of Pixar Animation franchises. Kids adore them, parents tolerate them. Unlike the best of Pixar’s output, the Cars films are lovingly crafted cartoons aimed squarely at kids with far more attention detail than the average fare you’d find scrolling through Netflix. The best that can be said is that “Cars 3” represents a considerable step up from “Cars 2”.
.. which remains the worst movie Pixar has ever produced by a wide margin.
Rating: 3.5/5.0
Returning to the narrative themes of the first Cars film, this one puts Lightning McQueen (voice of Owen Wilson) back on the racetrack and dials Larry The Cable Guy’s Mater character down to a glorified cameo. This time Lightning McQueen is the esteemed veteran dealing with hotshot challengers. When a gigantic crash knocks him out for the season he must find a way to deal with the changed landscape,...

In 2006, Cars and its hotshot hero, Owen Wilson’s Lightning McQueen, sped away with the hearts of moviegoers around the world, with the franchise becoming one of the most profitable in Pixar’s history (mostly due to through-the-roof merchandise sales). The film’s commercial success stood in stark contrast to its tepid critical reception, with most critics agreeing that this was the first time a Pixar movie fell below the high bar set by their prior work. Cars 2, a dazzling but ill-conceived globetrotting spy thriller, fared even worse than its predecessor, garnering harsher criticism and a far less successful line of product tie-ins.

For the juggernaut that is Pixar, the one consistent mark on an otherwise essentially spotless record has been the Cars franchise. Give or take one or two other outings that some people are higher on than others, this franchise is the only thing keeping the company from essentially a perfect record. This week, Cars 3 hits theaters and hopes to right the ship as it becomes part of a trilogy. Cars has a mixed reputation, but Cars 2 is Pixar’s somewhat red headed stepchild. Can Cars 3 change the trend? Well, yes and no. It’s going to be the best in the series to some or most, but it’s still very much lesser Pixar overall. I suppose your mileage may vary here (no pun intended) with this one. This sequel looks at how racer Lightning McQueen (voice of Owen Wilson) deals with no longer being the new kid on the block.

When kids – largely, but by no means exclusively, little dudes – lose their minds over the anthropomorphic autos of the animated Cars movies, it's simple math: Wisecracking racecars equals bright, shiny entertainment for the junior need-for-speed crowd and happiness for the shareholders. But if adults big-up the series for anything besides being a visual babysitter, it's for proving that yes, even the mighty Pixar is not perfect.

“It’s the comeback story of the year.” So says one announcer as the stakes go up in “Cars 3,” and while that may be hyperbole when applied to the movie itself, there’s no question that this latest edition in Pixar’s weakest franchise rescues it from mediocrity. Ironically, the first two “Cars” installments were shepherded along by Pixar guru John Lasseter, but traded the sophistication associated with the brand for hokey archetypes and surface-deep gags. Perhaps the setback came from the starting point: It was never a surefire bet that the travails of googly-eyed talking vehicles (in a world eerily devoid of other species) could muster much depth, but “Cars 3” finally gets there.
This time, Lasseter takes a backseat to new director Brian Fee (a storyboard artist on the first two films), who develops a richer scenario out of rusty parts — finding, along with screenwriters Kiel Murray,...

For generations, Lightning McQueen has ruled the roost.
It’s a reputation one can trace all the way back to ’06, when Owen Wilson’s spunky red stock car won over the hearts and minds of Radiator Springs by helping the retiring vet Strip “The King” Weathers over the finish line, sacrificing his hold on the Piston Cup in the process. That momentum carried over into Brad Lewis and John Lasseter’s Cars 2 five years later, where Lightning completed his transition from rookie to bona fide champion.
But when you’ve reached the absolute peak of stock car racing, there’s only one direction to go: down. And that’s exactly what lies in store for Lightning McQueen in Cars 3, Brian Fee’s animated threequel that’s set to introduce a fresh wave of budding racers on to the circuit. Among the fresh faces (grills?) is Jackson Storm, a...

After a detour into spy territory with “Cars 2,” Pixar gets back on track with another animated mid-life crisis movie. “Cars 3” finds champion Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson) struggling past his prime and channeling the late Paul Newman’s sagacious Doc Hudson from “Cars” for a comeback.
The filmmakers were able to use outtakes from John Lasseter’s “Cars” recording sessions with the late Newman for the sequel’s flashbacks. Fortunately, the director left the mic on the legendary actor and celebrated race car driver, who had a lot more to say than his lines. Newman would regale them with anecdotes, play practical jokes, and often utter, “That’s not racing!” They added some of his ad libs in “Cars 3.”

It’s only when we hit our lowest point that we’re open to the greatest change. At least, that’s how the old saying goes, and it’s one that very much applies to Lightning McQueen’s journey in Cars 3, the animated threequel from Pixar and director Brian Fee that’s booked in for release on June 16th.

From Castle to Slither, Serenity to Firefly, few actors are held in such high regard as Nathan Fillion. For the legions of Browncoats out there, Fillion will forever be known as Malcolm Reynolds, the swashbuckling pilot who captured our imagination throughout Joss Whedon’s aforementioned sci-fi series before it was unceremoniously pulled off the airwaves more than a decade ago.
The actor has remained a fixture on screens big and small ever since though, and fans of all things Pixar will soon be able to see – or rather hear – Fillion in Brian Fee’s animated threequel, Cars 3. Per Entertainment Weekly, we now know his character to be Sterling, a “suave chief executive coupe who becomes the new sponsor of once-glorious racer Lightning McQueen.” EW’s reveal was accompanied by our first look at Sterling in action, who can be seen imparting wisdom and advice to Owen Wilson’s down-on-his-luck stock car.
