The Sudanese drama Goodbye Julia is continuing its impressive awards run, earning the Grand Jury Award for Best Narrative Feature over the weekend at the Sonoma International Film Festival in California.
Mohamed Kordofani directed the story set in the context of the secessionist movement that led to the establishment of the independent nation of South Sudan in 2011.
“We commend the festival for its impressive selection of narrative features and unanimously select Goodbye Julia as the best film,” jurors wrote. “An outstanding first feature from Mohamed Kordofani, anchored by two stellar performances from Eiman Yousif and Siran Riak, Goodbye Julia provides a glimpse into a culture and region that’s underrepresented and underexplored in contemporary cinema.”
The jury, comprised of Rosa Bosch (Begin Again Films), Tyler Coates (The Hollywood Reporter), Rebecca Fisher (Magnolia Pictures), Jason Hellerstein (Sideshow), and Julie Huntsinger (Telluride Film Festival), awarded a Special Mention to Hesitation Wound, describing...

The 27th Sonoma International Film Festival (March 20-24), as always, leaned into wine and food with the sold-out opening night U.S. premiere of Thomas Napper’s “Widow Clicquot” (Vertical Entertainment), starring Haley Bennett as the woman who saves the legendary winemaker’s legacy. The wine country film festival drew its highest audience attendance to date with a robust film slate programmed by artistic director Carl Spence (working with Executive Director Ginny Krieger), in his second year, including upcoming specialty fare like Luc Besson’s “DogMan” (Briarcliff Entertainment) starring Caleb Landry Jones in an incendiary performance, and Sony Pictures Classics’ raucous comedy “Wicked Little Letters,” starring Olivia Colman, along with a smattering of yummy wine and food events.
The five-day festival curated by Spence along with senior programmers Amanda Salazar and Ken Jacobson, showcased more than 100 films. Twenty-five countries were represented in this year’s lineup of 43 narrative features, 16 documentary features,...

It's time for the West Coast, Baby!
The competition is heating up, and they brought things over to the west side, on MasterChef Season 13 Episode 3, as the regional battle continued with contestants from Hawaii and Cali to Utah duking it out for one of those coveted aprons.
And befittingly, the West Coast brought us some very quirky individuals.
With a new region to explore, the Masterchef judges chose a great guest judge with James Beard Award nominees Susan Feniger.
And some of you will be pleased to know that the contestants that competed and those who were chosen didn't just hail from California.
The Wild West Delivers Everything
One of the exciting parts about regional exploration is that it considers how genuinely diverse the country is.
We have one of the most diverse ecosystems of the globe, and that's often reflected from one corner of the U.S. to the next.

Tequila rocks at Hollywood events. Some prefer it neat. Nightlife entrepreneur Rande Gerber recommends his (with George Clooney) Casamigos brand on the rocks. Icy tequila can be refreshing and cinematic: the frozen margarita got its due in “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’s” brazen finale. Although there is a surplus of Piper-Heidsieck champagne for toasting, guests at the Oscars Governor’s Ball depend on sponsor Don Julio tequila to enhance the celebratory night.
Tequila’s rise as the spirit of choice in Hollywood has its origins in Los Angeles’ proximity to Mexico and embrace of Mexican cuisines and culture. Produced under strict government regulation in just five Mexican regions — predominantly Jalisco — the most sought-after tequilas are distilled from 100% Weber blue agave plants, which take five to 12 years to mature depending on where they are cultivated. Once ripened, the agave hearts are cooked and crushed; the extracted liquids ferment and...

Today’s celebrity chefs are treated like rock stars. But mostly male rock stars. Like many other professions, men have somehow garnered more fame and bigger paychecks than their female counterparts in the restaurant world.
The new Logo documentary “Hungry” aims to examine how and why that came to be. Filmmaker Patty Ivins (“Reversal of Fortune”) took a look at gender inequality in restaurant kitchens for the film.
Among the chefs she interviewed: Los Angeles-based Dakota Weiss, who owns Estrella and Sweetfin Poke; Pink Delongpre, owner of Bacon & Brine in Solvang, Calif.; and Sarah Kirnon, owner of Miss Ollie’s in Oakland.

Is jackfruit the new soy? The starchy, fibrous fruit is popping up in vegetarian and vegan dishes, serving as the meat substitute du jour for some of the more creative chefs, restaurants—even food trucks. We first spotted it in the BBQ jackfruit bao—substituting for what might otherwise have been pork—in L.A. at Susan Feniger's Street, which serves inventive spins on global street food. "We like to use jackfruit in our vegan baos and tacos because it's not a processed fake meat," Feniger told us. "It's an all-natural plant ingredient that is not processed, and exists in natural world. When shredded and cooked, it takes on almost any flavor, so that it is a...

Feldman, who owns his own wine label Angelica Cellars, confessed, “It makes you sort of re-evaluate your own level of success.”

Four Food Network stars dig into their bag of tricks to scare up some Halloween-friendly treats in a special holiday-themed episode of "Best Thing I Ever Made" airing Sunday morning, Oct. 28.
Each of the four cooks -- Sunny Anderson, Jacques Torres, Susan Feniger and Eric Greenspan -- hosts his own segment, preparing his favorite spooktacular dish.
In Anderson's case, that's her beloved candy bar pancakes with "booberry" syrup.
"You have candy bars left over, so what are you going to do with them? I make pancakes, but I crunch up either Butterfingers or Snickers, and I put them in the batter," Anderson tells Zap2it. Good morning! It's Friday!!!!
I feel like I have to deliver good news today so you can all get over your Thursday Glee/Grey's sadness. I'll do my best. We'll start with this.
Did you smile? Lol? Feel something? You'll be Ok!
Sarah Silverman talked with out activist Yetta Kurland about women's rights and sex!
Sacha Baron Cohen has decided that the story of the Hong Kong dad who tried to buy his lesbian daughter a husband is movie-worthy. The film will be called The Lesbian and I am only a tiny bit skeptical.
This might not surprise you but Jenny McCarthy used to make out with her other Playboy playmates when they were bored. She'd teased about this sort of thing before, but here's how that romance went down:

Lesbian swimmer Diana Nyad is not giving up on her dream to swim from Cuba to Florida. After her fourth attempt Nyad was pulled out of the water this morning after swimming for nearly 60 hours.
Tegan Quin is getting her beauty rest.
I can't believe I'm going to bed at 930pm. Sara/the band better appreciate how serious I'm taking this whole "rehearsal" nonsense tomorrow.

Last week: Debbie packed her knives and I forgot to watch. Oops.
Quickfire Challenge
The chefs must cook seafood without any heat or fire. Everyone immediately realizes Takashi has a huge advantage. Brian Boitano is the guest judge... apparently he's an Olympic figure skater? Brian really enjoyed the dishes made by Mark and Chris, but he chooses Takashi. No one is surprised really. He wins immunity.
Elimination Challenge
The chefs will be working in teams to make a three-course meal on a Teppanyaki grill (hibachi-style). They get 30 minutes per three-man team, which is tight. Not to mention, they will be cooking while the judges watch their every move -- including former Master Chef contestants Rick Moonen, Susan Feniger, Jonathan Waxman and some other chef whose name I forget (sorry!).
It's actually really fun to watch the chefs cook hibachi-style. Maybe it's because I love Japanese food, but it's probably one...

ABC has just purchased a brand new sitcom about Top Chef Masters competitors, Mary Sue Milliken and Susan Feniger.
Not many details have been released about the new project, but the show will take place in the 1980's and will be executive produced by Michael Eisner. With Feniger and Milliken having been business partners for the last 25 years and Milliken married to Feniger's ex-husband, this show could actually be pretty interesting.

Michael Eisner is back in the mouse house, this time as a TV producer. ABC has bought a period single-camera comedy project that Eisner is executive producing. Set in the 1980s, the untitled comedy, written by Jeff Greenstein, chronicles the early days of celebrity chefs Mary Sue Milliken and Susan Feniger’s unique business partnership and friendship. Former Will & Grace executive producer Greenstein, repped by ICM, is executive producing with Eisner, Noel Bright and Steve Cohen, while Milliken and Feniger serve as producers. Chefs and business partners for over 25 years, Milliken and Feniger own the chain of Border Grill restaurants and its gourmet taco truck offshoot. They star in Food Network’s Too Hot Tamales and have appeared on Bravo’s Top Chef Masters.

Teen heartthrob Joe Jonas is best known as a member of the Jonas Brothers, but he may pursue a future in the food world someday.
In a lengthy new profile in the New York Times, food gets top billing. Jonas cited Texas chef Tim Love, Los Angeles guru Susan Feniger, Italian master Mario Batali and el bulli chef Ferran Adrià as his culinary inspirations. He hopes to start a food blog someday.
“I don’t really get star-struck ever, but when it comes to chefs, I will sometimes get nervous,” Jonas said. “If there’s a chef I really like, I will freak, because I think their talent is so different from what I do.”
Jonas recently appeared as a judge on Top Chef. What do you think of his love of cooking?...

Two eyewitnesses tell HollywoodLife.com all about Joe’s date with his new blonde girl friend at Susan Feniger’s Street in La! Find out all the details!
Joe Jonas was photographed leaving Susan Feniger’s Street last night in Hollywood with a tall, beautiful blonde. We chatted with two eyewitnesses who saw Joe and his mystery girl and told us what they ate and how much they flirted! Who is she?
The girl looks a lot like Renee Bargh, a friend of Delta Goodrem, Nick Jonas‘ girlfriend. That would be a fun double date!
Joe and his mystery girl were apparently very lovey-dovey over dinner. An eyewitness tells HollywoodLife.com, “Joe and his girlfriend, I assume they are a couple, looked very much in love. They were smiling a lot, flirting, laughing and being very affectionate. She’s gorgeous and taller than him, but they do make a great looking couple.

Previously: Corcy finally chose to make a baby the old fashion way – by using PayPal. Sajdah put the pedal to the metal on her 2-week "relationship," despite being too young to drive. Whitney had a fight with Sara but came back after looking under her soul and finding only dust bunnies. A sober Romi cut Kelsey in half during a freak scissoring accident. And Claire didn't do anything terribly interesting, but her mane did land a role in the touring company of The Lion King.
This week, Whitney emerges from the revolving door on her bedroom to find Rachel sitting at her computer, eating a raw pepper. Whitney tries a piece because she hasn't eaten anything but Sara in days. Maternal Rachel worries she's becoming nothing more than a bunch of dreads on a stick. You mean like this?
