The fact that there was going to be a Blade reboot as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe came as a huge surprise when the announcement was made at the San Diego Comic-Con back in July of 2019 – but all these years later, we’re still waiting on the film to make its way into production. Filming is supposedly going to commence soon, though, so we figured it was time to put together a list of Everything We Know About Blade.
Mahershala Ali
The Blade character was previously played by Wesley Snipes in three feature films and by Sticky Fingaz in a short-lived television series. This time around, he’s going to be played by Mahershala Ali, who was already attached to the project when it was announced in 2019… and while there was no indication online that Ali has been interested in playing Blade, this was actually a role he had...

The release date for Marvel’s upcoming Blade reboot has shifted several times already – at one point, it was scheduled to release in 2024 – and we’ve got another new date today.
Most recently slated for release on February 14, 2025, Blade will now daywalk into movie theaters on November 7, 2025. It’ll be the first time the vampire-slaying Marvel Comics character has been seen on the big screen since Blade: Trinity, released back in 2004.
Yann Demange (“Lovecraft Country”) will sit in the director’s chair for Blade’s big screen return in late 2025. Mahershala Ali is starring alongside Mia Goth (X, Pearl).
According to Demange, the upcoming movie will definitely be rated “R.”
Michael Starrbury (When They See Us) wrote the most recent draft of the screenplay, and we recently learned that Nic Pizzolatto (“True Detective”) is now working on the script.

At this time, the film is still dated for release on February 14, 2025, with director Yann Demange (“Lovecraft Country”) currently attached to bring Blade back to the big screen.
Marvel’s Blade reboot is part of the latest phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and Oscar-winning actor Mahershala Ali is starring alongside Mia Goth (X, Pearl).
According to Demange in a new chat with Deadline, he’s been given an “R” rating to bring the iconic blood-sucker back to life in the ruthless fashion that Blade deserves.
“They gave me the R, which is so important,” Demange tells Deadline in a new chat.

Just under two months after losing original helmer Bassam Tariq, Marvel Studios has hired both a new director and a new screenwriter for its upcoming “Blade” reboot with Mahershala Ali.
Yann Demange, a French-Algerian filmmaker whose previous credits include Jack O’Connell’s “71” and Matthew McConaughey’s “White Boy Rick,” has signed on to direct the vampire-killing actioner. Michael Starrbury, who has penned episodes of Netflix and Ava DuVernay’s “When They See Us” and “Colin in Black and White,” will write a new screenplay.
While the film has already been pushed from Nov. 6, 2023 to Sept. 6, 2024, Marvel Studios did not rush to find a replacement filmmaker. Sources confirm that Marvel was taking their time to find the right candidate. Assuming all goes well from here, production will begin in Atlanta in early 2023. Marvel Studios’ “Blade,” starring Oscar winner Mahershala Ali, has found its new director in Yann Demange.
The “Lovecraft Country” and “White Boy Rick” director takes the reins of the vampire slayer movie from Bassam Tariq, who exited the production in September. He will direct from a brand new script by Emmy nominee Michael Starrbury, which is said to be “darker than most MCU movies.”
After Tariq’s departure from the project, which was set to begin production in November, Marvel Studios focused on revamping the story and putting the right team in place, ultimately entering negotiations with Demange. Starrbury also replaces screenwriter Stacy Osei-Kuffour who was originally tapped to write the film’s script.
Last month, Disney delayed “Blade” from its planned Nov. 3, 2023, release date to Sept. 6, 2024, following the production pause. With Demange in place, production on the film, which also stars Delroy Lindo and Aaron Pierre, is set to resume in Atlanta next year.

This resulted in Eric's 'quasi-vampiric' abilities, including a greatly prolonged lifespan and the ability to sense supernatural creatures, as well as an immunity to complete vampirism.
"Eric grew up living at Madame Vanity's, and at age nine, returning home from school one December, he saw an old man being attacked by three vampires.

Mahershala Ali’s turn as “Blade” is one step closer to the big screen.
“Watchmen” writer Stacy Osei-Kuffour has been tapped to write the upcoming Marvel Studios film, Variety has confirmed. Marvel Studios announced that Ali, a two-time Oscar-winner, would portray the vampire hunter at San Diego Comic-Con in 2019.
Ali first stepped into the Marvel fold as a villain on the Netflix series “Luke Cage,” which is when the actor began pitching himself to star in a reboot of “Blade.” The franchise — which New Line Cinema first launched in 1998 starring Wesley Snipes as the titular sword-wielding half-vampire — is widely credited for presaging the current golden age of superhero cinema. The three films starring Snipes, all written by David S. Goyer, grossed roughly $418 million globally through 2004. Goyer later created a TV spin-off starring the rapper Sticky Fingaz that ran for one season in 2006 on the defunct basic cable network Spike.

When it comes to Blade's return to the big screen, it might be a matter of 'when' not 'if'...

The fearless daywalking vampire hunter was played to perfection by Wesley Snipes in two box office hits, before a tumultuous third instalment in the franchise - Blade: Trinity - pumped the brakes on Blade's cinematic story.

John Cusack is a bit of a Hollywood oddity. There’s no pattern to the type of movie he will choose to do, so he’s always kept us on our toes. Sure, he’ll make a dumb action movie, but that will often afford him the chance to make a few smaller gambles later on. Up until the last few years he’s played the system very well, but recently his ethic appears to have, um, waned? A little?
Since the heady days of Say Anything and Sixteen Candles he’s come to represent a sort of slightly weird-looking, awkwardly charming, offbeat everyman that men aged 18-49 can look at and go 'me'” - which is fine. There’s a place for that, as...

Many attribute the success of the contemporary superhero genre to Bryan Singer’s X-Men, which hit theaters in 2000 and helped usher in a new wave of comic book adaptations. However, the first successful Marvel Comics adaptation was Blade, which arrived in 1998 and starred Wesley Snipes as the titular vampire superhero.
The Blade franchise, while initially highly successful, came to a screeching halt with 2004’s Blade Trinity (and certainly wasn’t helped by the terrible 2006 series starring Sticky Fingaz), and since then the rights to the character have reverted back to Marvel Studios. We’ve heard rumors that the studio could be bringing the character to the darker, bloodier Netflix side of the McU, and expected that the role would be recast. According to Snipes himself, however, there’s a chance that he may don Blade’s fangs again after all.

With the recent successes of such TV series as "American Horror Story," "Hannibal" and Showtime's "Penny Dreadful," horror is hot on the small-screen right now -- so much so that in addition to MTV's forthcoming small-screen "Scream" spinoff, TV studios are in the midst of bringing a horde of cinematic fright-film properties to television, ranging from "Shutter Island" to "The Devil's Advocate" to "The Mist." In light of this, I've taken a look back at eight previous horror movie-to-tv translations and analyzed why they hit -- or didn't -- with audiences. "Bates Motel" (A&E) Based on: "Psycho" Aired: 2013-present Why it did (or didn't) work:a great pedigree ("Lost" showrunner Carlton Cuse), a terrific cast (Vera Farmiga, Freddie Highmore) and generally positive critical notices gave "Bates Motel" a sheen of respectability that worked well in this Golden Age of prestige television. The show has so far aired three successful seasons...

1998′s Blade movie was undoubtedly the trigger that instigated the current huge popularity being enjoyed by comic book movies as a genre – the pioneer of the modern comic book movie, so to speak. It was swiftly followed by fellow Marvel offerings X-Men (2000) and Spider-Man (2002) and the rest is history.
Such was Blade’s success, it spawned two sequels – 2002′s Blade II and 2004′s Blade: Trinity – and a 2006 television series (Blade: The Series) that was set in the same continuity as the movies, albeit starring a different actor (Wesley Snipes was replaced by Kirk “Sticky Fingaz” Jones).
However, it has been ten years since the last movie and the television series did pretty badly performance wise (it was cancelled after one season because of poor ratings). Sticky Fingaz certainly won’t be asked to return and, at 51 years old, Wesley Snipes’ vampire hunting days are over. So how about a Blade reboot?...

Hitting select theaters this Friday is a new movie starring John Cusack and Robert De Niro called, "The Bag Man." If you click on the above play button what you'll be treated to is a HitFix exclusive clip of Cusack in the film. So that you're warned, there might be a four letter word or two present, making it semi-nsfw. To set the stage a little, the movie is a crime thriller directed by David Grovic and inspired by the story "The Cat" by Marie-Louise von Franz. Outside of De Niro and Cusack, the movie features Rebecca Da Costa, Crispin Glover, Sticky Fingaz, Dominic Purcell and Martin Kelbba. And, while it is a crime thriller, not everything in it is played perfectly straight, as is readily apparent in the clip. The official synopsis reads as follows: "'The Bag Man' is a taut crime thriller that follows the story...

With shows like The Walking Dead and American Horror Story scooping up high ratings and accolades like they’re going out of style, there’s no doubt that horror is dominating TV right now. It’s even becoming a big time trend to turn popular horror movies into their own series’, with spin-offs of Psycho and Silence of the Lambs already moving into their second seasons and others based on The Shining, Scream, The Exorcist and From Dusk Till Dawn currently in the works.
That said, the road to success hasn’t always been an easy one, when it comes to TV adaptations of beloved horror flicks. Over the years we’ve seen many of them come and go, either failing to catch on with audiences the way shows like Bates Motel and Hannibal have or even failing to ever find their way in front of the cameras.

Terrible news for Luke Cage fans last week as Terry Crews has officially taken himself out of the running for Marvel's Power Man. "Everybody's like, 'I want to play this superhero character, that superhero character,'" Crews states in a recent interview with Black Film. "I'd rather make up my own. Make a brand new one, you know. 'Blade' was basically a failed character. That comic book didn't do very well."
While it is a shame to hear that Crews is uninterested in portraying Luke Cage in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, he does have a point as far as "Blade's" non-movie endeavors go. Although the vampire hunter has been the star of several ongoing comic series in the past, he never really took off until the "Blade" movie was released back in 1998, which went on to spawn two sequel films and even a live-action TV series.

With the mammoth box office opening of "Iron Man 3" last weekend, Marvel's Phase 2 is now in full swing and the studio is already looking at possibilities for Phase 3. According to the Hollywood Reporter, scripts for a new "Blade" movie as well as a "Ms. Marvel" film already exist. We have previously seen the character Blade (real name Eric Brooks) on the big screen with Wesley Snipes playing the vampire hunter three times from 1998 to 2004. A television series lasted one season and starred Kirk 'Sticky Fingaz' Jones in the title role. Ms. Marvel, whose alter ego is Carol Danvers (and...

While there are no official plans yet, a betting man could wager that Marvel will eventually be moving forward with rebooting its recently regained franchises. Out of Punisher, Ghost Rider, and Daredevil, none has reached quite the financial success achieved by the Blade series. Wesley Snipes has been out of jail since April and is already back in acting, and reportedly in talks for Expendables 3. I'm sure he'd be good to sign on, but does Marvel need him?
You might say, "Of course. He Is Blade." Exactly my thoughts when I first thought of the question. When people think of a sword wielding vampire hunter, he's the guy that enters everyone's mind...well at least most our minds.
The original movie came out in 1998, and while there were sequels, today's Jon Smith 18 year old (born in 1995) might never have seen the film or be able to tell you much about the Marvel hero.
