The FBI can’t prove that North Korea is responsible for hacking into Sony, releasing thousands of documents and confidential company information. So it can’t be said with any certainty that the hack was launched as an official attack on James Franco and Seth Rogen’s forthcoming let’s-assassinate-Kim Jong-un comedy The Interview, although the outraged North Korean government has expressed their approval, stating that “hacking into Sony Pictures might be a righteous deed of the supporters and sympathizers with the Dprk.” Regardless of how it shakes out, what better time to revisit Jim Finn’s peerlessly odd, deadpan take on North Korean propaganda? 2008’s The Juche […]...

Yesterday was all about the Cannes lineup, so we've got quite a bit of news to catch up with today. First and foremost, Cinema Scope has relaunched its site with a healthy selection of pieces from Issue 50, which cinephiles lucky enough to be holding a print copy have been talking about for weeks now. Editor Mark Peranson: "So to commemorate 50 issues, I came up with the silly (not stupid) idea of deciding on the best 50 filmmakers currently working under the age of 50 (or the top, or the greatest — I've spent far too much time pondering this silly adjective). I'm anticipating heaps of criticism for this in the blogosphere, but I hope this leads to a little discussion outside of the pages of this magazine, and provides a snapshot of where cinema finds itself today."
20 of those 50 pieces are online. You'll find, for example, Raya Martin on Carlos Reygadas (and...

The 14th annual Revelation Perth International Film Festival is, once again, packed to the gills with worldwide wonderful, weird and revelatory filmmaking. The fest runs this year on July 14-24.
The highlight of the festival is the once-in-a-lifetime live performance of Gravity Was Everywhere Back Then, which will be performed on July 17 at 7:15 p.m. American animator Brent Green will be traveling Down Under to provide the live musical score and narration for his emotional, live-action animated tale about undying love and creation. He will also be accompanied by band mates and foley artists, Mike McGinley, John Swartz, Donna K and Drew Henkles.
Some other films to look out for at the fest will be the Australian premiere of Zach Clark‘s terminally twisted Vacation!, a black comedy about four girls on a debauched weekend of drinking and drugging that ends horribly for all involved; Marie Losier’s acclaimed...

The prestigious Art in America magazine profiles and interviews Bad Lit favorite Brent Green. Filmmaker and curator Cecilia Araneda has a new website that’s very spiffy looking. If you need a zen moment, go stare at the wonder of filmmaker and artist Daniel Barrow’s snowglobe. Michael Varrati has a great new filmmaker to know: David DeCoteau, the king of beefcake horror. I was completely unfamiliar with his work until I read this! Rhizome goes through the career of pioneering video artist Nam June Paik in conjunction with a retrospective of his work running at the Tate in London. Plus, some staff changes at the media arts website. I think the Underground Film Guild is a project of Tla Video, but I can’t say for sure. (Hey guys, update your About page from the automatic WordPress-install text.) But, if you want to read/watch about exploitation films, this...

It might still be summer, but it’s not too early to start thinking sending your films in for next year’s underground film festivals. Two major fests being held in the early part of 2011 are already looking for films: Florida’s Flex Fest and the Boston Underground Film Festival. Deadlines, entry info and more is below.
Flex stands for Florida Experimental Film/Video Festival, which alternates years between a competitive and a curated festival. 2011 will be their fourth competitive festival to be held in Gainsville, Fl. So, what is Flex looking for? They don’t know — and that’s a good thing! As they say on their website:
Flex doesn’t want to know in advance what experimental means. We’re interested in work that challenges generic designations (including the traditional “avant garde” or “underground”ones). Work may also draw on documentary, narrative, animation or any other tradition –- or no tradition at all.

The Chicago Underground Film Festival is always a special occasion, but the 17th edition of this venerable institution, which runs on June 24 – July 1, is a little bit extra special. This year, Cuff will be honoring the lifelong underground film champion Jonas Mekas with their Lifetime Achievement Award!
Mekas will be in attendance at the festival at will appear at several screenings in his honor. On the 25th, there will be a screening of the new documentary Visionaries: Jonas Mekas and the (Mostly) American Avant-Garde, at which director Chuck Workman, Mekas and underground film historian Fred Camper will participate in a Q&A. Then, on the 26th, several of Mekas’ own films will screen and he’ll be presented with his award.
As for the rest of the fest, Cuff usually has some sort of unifying theme, at least as far as the features go. It’s not typically a stated theme,...

Official screening dates haven’t been announced yet — although the fest typically runs in early November — the 24th annual AFI Film Festival is now officially looking for submissions. There are two deadlines, one for shorts and one for features:
Shorts Deadline:
July 30
Features Deadline:
August 13
I also don’t have entry fee information, but you can probably find that out once you start the Withoutabox submission process. AFI is usually a fairly diverse festival, ranging from screening major independent films — last year they screened Precious and The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus — to very offbeat, quirky films such as Jennifer Oreck’s lovely Beetle Queen Conquers Tokyo and short films by Kevin Jerome Anderson and Jim Finn.
The 2009 edition of the festival was the first year much of it was free for audiences. The “See a Film on Us!” promotion proved to be so successful that AFI will be bringing it...

Since I declared 2010 to be Year of the Underground Film Loop, I’ve decided to try to start doing link round-up posts of interesting stuff found on other underground film websites — and related content on other sites that might prove interesting to an underground film audience. Hopefully, I can keep this up as a series, but for now here’s some nice links for you that I’ve encountered the past few weeks:
Matthew Flanagan has put up a very beautiful series of stills captured from Jonas Mekas’ Walden DVD. (Which I sadly still have to get.) You can scan through the series here. In a somewhat different vein, filmmaker Bob Moricz is threatening to re-watch every Friday the 13th film ever made and post up his thoughts. I’m a fan of that franchise — as lame as most of the films are — so Moricz’s series is interesting to me.

The 48th annual Ann Arbor Film Festival is another exciting celebration of underground film past and present, featuring two retrospectives of two master filmmakers and dozens of short films and features from some of the most gifted talents working today.
For the retrospectives, first, Kenneth Anger will be in attendance at the festival for two programs of his classic work, including Fireworks and Scorpio Rising. Plus, for the first Anger screening, the filmmaker will be joined on-stage by film critic Dennis Lim for a discussion of his work and career. The second retrospective is of the work of the late Chick Strand, who sadly passed away in 2009. Strand’s Angel Blue Sweet Wings (1966) will actually open the entire festival, then there will be two retrospective screenings of her work, the first of which will be presented by film scholar Irina Leimbacher.
