I'm surprised that it's taken five years since David Bowie's passing for someone to attempt the biopic treatment. Stardust wisely shuns the standard birth-career highlights-death formula, instead choosing to focus on a specific incident in Bowie's life: an ill-fated tour of the United States in early 1971, when he was mostly known as a one-hit wonder off the back of Space Oddity. "What follows is (mostly) fiction," we are warned, which seems reasonable for a story of a man who indulged in no small degree of self-mythologising.
It would be unfair to criticise any normal human being for not looking or sounding like David Bowie, but I'm going to do it anyway because Johnny Flynn resembles Geoffrey Rush doing an Eddie Izzard impersonation. It's made all the more jarring by the extraordinary costuming work in the film, with early scenes including a near-perfect replica of the Michael Fish "man's dress" Bowie.

It sounded too crazy to be true. The host of an opening for a Welsh marina in the 1980s was a BBC broadcaster named Michael Fish and all the invited guests were locals with fish names: Salmon, Carp, Bass, Haddock …
Charlie Lyne figured that it probably wasn’t true, but he loved the story anyway. He’d heard it from his friend Caspar Salmon, who said his grandmother had attended the event on the Welsh island of Anglesey.
“I would force him to tell it to anyone I introduced him to,” Lyne said. “It just became incessant, a favorite party trick to get him to reiterate this story — culminating in forcing him to do it for the film.”

Now this is a unique, totally fun short documentary. Fish Story is a short doc produced by The Guardian, telling the tall tale of a event that happened years ago. The story goes that in North Wales, a weatherman named Michael Fish was the host behind an event where people with "fishy" last names (Mrs. Crab, Mr. Salmon, Mrs. Bass, Mr. Mullet) would attend a dinner and be served the fish of their last name. Filmmaker Charlie Lyne attempts to figure out if the story is actually true and reach the people who put it together. I admire the way this doc is presented, with the oral storytelling and nice, clean visuals to keep us captivated. Hit tip to The Guardian for first premiering this short film. Original description (also found on YouTube): "Sometime in the 1980s, Caspar Salmon's grandmother was invited to a gathering on the Welsh island of Anglesey,...

Until we invent a time machine, the Rolling Stones‘ new museum exhibition is the closest you’ll get to hanging out with the band at key moments in their history. Fleetwood Mac! Phil Collins! - and it's also a seriously tense depiction of life for two Russians undercover in Reagan's America. Now in its second season, it's not too late to get on board to find out why we're hooked on this on Saturday nights.

This is part 2 (part 1 Here) of an expanded article Clothes on Film editor Christopher Laverty wrote for men’s style resource Mr Porter analysing Michael Caine’s suits in The Italian Job. This post covers all the costumes he wore during the film.
We rejoin Charlie and his ragtag crew at the big meeting when the gang are all introduced to each other. It had to be a Doug Hayward moment and thankfully does not disappoint. In actual fact it is probably Michael Caine’s best fitting suit in the whole movie:
Dark blue worsted wool suit; double breasted jacket, wide peaked lapels, 6 on 2 fastening, slanted hip pockets, ticket pocket, high rear vents; white high collar medium spread shirt with double cuffs; narrow leg trousers; white silk necktie.
Odd to wear a white tie out of formal occasion or evening wear, but it works well as part of the ensemble.

We may be on the verge of spring with a heatwave predicted for some of the country this week, but frankly, we're not buying it. We've been burned by Michael Fish and co before, and we know that the only thing you can count on in life is a good, entertaining TV box set.

Memo to Kim Kardashian: no one wants to hear your thoughts on the Middle East
With the exception, perhaps, of gossip site tmz.com, it's hard to think of anything that has done more to destroy whatever mystique celebrities once had than giving them access to the internet. Whether it's via their personal blogs or social media, celebrities have wreaked more havoc on their own reputations than Lindsay Lohan has caused on La's freeways.
The only thing newspapers love more than nubile blond 17-year-olds jumping for joy on A-level day is padding out stories about recent news events with quotes from celebrities' Twitter feeds. Celebrities, always attuned to the possibility of more publicity, have realised this and reacted accordingly, with predictable results. In October, Lindsay Lohan – for it is she – urged folk on the east coast to stop fretting about Hurricane Sandy: "Why is everyone in Such a panic...

David Attenborough and Chris Packham have given their backing to a new Christmas single in support of the Badger Trust. Others involved in 'The Present of Life' - a collaboration with eco fashion brand Rapanui - include Paul Topping, Rob da Bank, Michael Fish, Katy Thorogood, Andy Booth and Jason Paine. The track is released via iTunes on December 7, with all proceeds donated to the Badger Trust. Attenborough, whose voice features in the single, said: "The government commissioned a scientific study into culling 11,000 badgers. "And the results of that independent scientific study were that culling is not a viable policy option." Packham added: "The battle (more)...

We always had a sneaky suspicion that weather forecasting is one of those things that is far more difficult than it looks. After all, getting it wrong can haunt a man for decades - just ask Michael Fish. And now Digital Spy can confirm after being invited to front a special weather forecast for The Sims 3 Seasons that, yes, it is indeed bloody hard.
The problem is that once you've got your head around the idea that the massive green screen behind you is in fact the United Kingdom, you've still got to remember that up is down and left is right while trying to read an autocue. (more)...

American celebrities were only too happy to voice their thoughts on the super storm
Lost in Showbiz is pleased to note the wide variety of responses to Hurricane Sandy from America's celebrities. At one extreme, there was hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons, who lambasted Mayor Bloomberg for making insufficient provision for New York's homeless: "They're fucked, it's terrible." At the other there was Nicole "Coco Marie" Austin, mammiferous wife of rapper Ice-t, who posted an online video of herself in New Jersey, jiggling her surgically enhanced breasts at the incoming storm. But Lost in Showbiz's favourite celebrity reaction came via Lindsay Lohan, who before the storm hit took to Twitter to complain: "Why is everyone in Such a panic about hurricane? Stop projecting negativity! Think positive and pray for peace!" Lost in Showbiz salutes Hollywood's own answer to Michael Fish, steadfast in the belief that a Category 2 hurricane can be diverted...

Michael Fish has recreated his infamous 1987 weather report. The presenter filmed a remake of the classic forecast in which he originally said that there was not a hurricane on the way, hours before the Great Storm hit 25 years ago. In the new advert for Etta's Seafood Kitchen in Brixton Village, the 68-year-old tells viewers "to stay indoors because we're in for quite a night". After thanking a caller for the hurricane warning, he walks off camera saying: "Well that could have been embarrassing." (more)...

Michael Fish has spoken about his infamous 1987 weather report on its 25th anniversary. Tonight (Monday, October 15) marks a quarter of a century since the UK's Great Storm of 1987, where 18 people died after winds hit speeds of up to 115mph. BBC weatherman Fish became a household name for his forecast earlier in the day, telling people not to worry after a woman phoned in claiming there was a "hurricane on the way". The clip's cult status reached even bigger heights earlier this year when it was used during Danny Boyle's London 2012 Olympics Opening Ceremony. Fish revealed that the woman in question actually didn't exist, and that he told a "white lie" for his opening line. "The amusing thing is that there wasn't a lady in Wales, but still people come maintaining (more)...

The former BBC Weather presenter Michael Fish had his immortality sealed last month when the famous footage ahead of the Great Storm of 1987 was included in Danny Boyle's Olympics Opening Ceremony. If that wasn't enough, the British legend has also proved a fish (or his stunt double) can fly with a Base (buildings, antennas, spans and earth) jump to raise awareness of climate change. "Raising awareness of climate change is really important, because there is no doubt whatsoever that if we carry on the way we are there will be shortages of food, shortages of water, towns (more)...

Inventive effort to tell a thousand small stories in event expected to be watched by 1 billion people worldwide
From a bucolic green and pleasant land via the belching chimney stacks of the Industrial Revolution to the internet age, Danny Boyle's attempt to define Britishness in the opening hour of his Olympic opening ceremony was a madcap, surreal, moving and often confounding affair.
An "industrial parade" of Jarrow marchers and colliery bands, hundreds of dancing nurses accompanied by Mike Oldfield, the Queen's encounter with James Bond as well as a nightmarish sequence of childhood terrors – they all featured.
When Dizzee Rascal, tiny among the armies of volunteer dancers around him, appeared to sing Bonkers at the climax of a third act that starts as a love story and becomes a riotous celebration of British music through the ages, it felt curiously appropriate.
It was typical that the arrival of the head of state,...

Take a look in the gallery below...Just yesterday the latest one-sheet for The Dark Knight Rises hit the web, bringing with it a heated debate*. Now the weather outlook appears to be getting distinctly colder and wetter, with six new character banners arriving, all featuring a snow and rain theme.Yes, once again it’s the Big Three – Bats, Bane and Catwoman – who get the love in a series that Michael Fish would go mad for (or, since the source is the movie’s French Facebook page, perhaps that should be Michel Poisson?**) Yes, given that Anne Hathaway’s Selina Kyle predicts in the trailer that a storm is coming, these somehow seem apt, even if we do wonder why they all think they have to be...

It’s the Top Chef All-Stars Finale! The real one, not Part 1 of 4 where they have to cook for a king who turns out to be not a king and how is that a twist because the stakes are infinitely lower (so many chefmories)! It’s down to Richard Blais and Mike Isabella, and their Final Challenge is to “Provide a glimpse into your future as a great chef.” Richard says he dreams of someday having a restaurant where “you come in and I cook you my style of food” (it’s also a restaurant where he’s in it to win it and not there to make friends), while Mike Isabella shows the judges a crystal ball of his future self as a fat fish with a long white beard. All the All-Stars and Jamie are back, and they’re all wearing their Wackee Finalee Glasses: Everyone got their Cheffin’ glasses on?...

Kate Garraway, Richard Arnold and Debra Stephenson have made it through to the final of Let’s Dance For Sports Relief.
We were shocked when Kate and Richard first performed their Grease inspired hand jive routine on tonight’s show, we’d expected them to be awful. Let’s face it, Kate displayed no natural rhythm or aptitude for dance during Strictly Come Dancing in 2007, so we expected her to be crap tonight. However, she and Richard actually performed really well. They managed to be funny while pulling off a mildly complicated routine and that’s big praise from us, because we normally detest Kate Garraway.
Kate and Richard got the highest amount of public votes and went automatically through to the final, while the judges chose to put Debra Stephenson through above kids TV presenters Sam and Mark. It was a much deserved win as Debra was great tonight...

We can’t wait to watch tonight’s Let’s Dance For Sports Relief second show, last week we laughed so much at Rufus Hound’s Cheryl Cole impression that we almost had a toilet related accident!
Tonight’s show promises to be just as good and we are particularly looking forward to a performance by one of our favourite female comedians Shappi Khorsandi.
Also taking part on the show will be actress and impressionist, Debra Stephenson, TV presenter Richard Arnold dancing with Kate Garraway and Michael Fish dancing with the Weather Girls (Lara Lewington, Clare Nasir, Becky Mantin), presenters Sam and Mark and boxers Carl Froch, Johnny Nelson, Tony Jeffries and Duke McKenzie.
We’ll be liveblogging the whole show tonight, so make you join us here to read our commentary and leave your own remarks about the contestants and the new celebrity judges.

Spike Jonze may be busy putting the finishing touches on Where The Wild Things Are but he's found time to nip out of the post-production studio to pick up the rights to novel Light Boxes.Light Boxes, the debut novel by New York writer Shane Jones, has a quirky, surreal, Jonze-ian feel: it's set in a town beseiged by a malevolent godlike being called February, which, like its calendar namesake, pitches the place into perpetual winter, and has as its protagonist a balloonist called Thaddeus. Think Alice In Wonderland meets The Road with a script draft by Michael Fish.Light Boxes sees Jonze returns to bean-counting duties as producer, with Ray Tintori (Death To The Tinman) directing. Like Jonze, Tintori cut his teeth making music videos, with promos for Mgmt, The Killers and Chairlift on his CV.No word yet on the setting for Light Boxes' wintry city (although if...
