Looking back on this still-young century makes clear that 2007 was a major time for cinematic happenings — and, on the basis of this retrospective, one we’re not quite through with ten years on. One’s mind might quickly flash to a few big titles that will be represented, but it is the plurality of both festival and theatrical premieres that truly surprises: late works from old masters, debuts from filmmakers who’ve since become some of our most-respected artists, and mid-career turning points that didn’t necessarily announce themselves as such at the time. Join us as an assembled team, many of whom were coming of age that year, takes on their favorites.
In many ways, Marc Lawrence’s 2007 rom-com Music and Lyrics begins like a fever dream. Not only does Hugh Grant suddenly appear onscreen with a sky-reaching hairdo, he’s also singing to the camera and wearing tight trousers.

Simon Cowell had a bit of a memory lapse on the first X Factor results show.
Tonight, he decided to send home Alien Nation... we think he meant Alien Uncovered.
Vote! The X Factor 2015: Did the right acts go home tonight?
In fairness to Simon, the group did recently have a name change, but it was to add 'Uncovered' - which might be the same reason Nick Grimshaw keeps getting it wrong as well.
Twitter was, of course, talking all about Cowell's gaff:
You know you never had a hope when Simon can't even be arsed to learn your name #aliennation #XFactor

Simon didn't know their name. The band hadn't learned their name change yet and Cheryl couldn't even summon a fake tear. Vintage #XFactor

Award-winning screenwriter Justin Owensby brings us his feature film directorial debut, "Chapman", an atmospheric and visually stunning character study enlivened with a strong dose of crude humor following a young man’s journey back home while haunted by images of his past.Alex Fletcher ("Killing Lincoln’s" Jesse Johnson), a locksmith trapped inside the wreckage of a life numbed by drugs and regret, receives an unexpected and troubling letter that draws him back to his childhood home, an idyllic town in the Colorado Rockies. While facing heartbreaking memories of best friend Paul (Chris Masterson, “Malcolm in the Middle”), his first love, Marie and demons from his past, Alex’s journey leads to an unlikely new bedfellow in Claire (Christine Woods, "The Walking Dead") and a confrontation that may be the key to his emotional healing.
"Justin Owensby's feature film debut immediately resonated with us,” said Candy Factory Films’ Head of Acquisitions Caitlin Gold. “His aesthetic eye and ability to bring a character to life is something we're looking forward to sharing with digital audiences everywhere this May.” "Chapman" will be available to download on iTunes and everywhere on May 8th, 2015.

Neil Gaiman has said that he would like to write a third episode of Doctor Who.
The author told Audrey Niffenegger at a Q&A in New York that he is eager to write for current Doctor Peter Capaldi.
He previously wrote 2011's 'The Doctor's Wife' and last year's 'Nightmare in Silver'.
Gaiman said: "Whenever I'm in the UK, I sneak into meetings with [the production team]. They say, 'Can you do another one?!' and I say, 'Yes! But not yet!'"
He continued: "Now I'm just sort of hoping that I can get one done while Peter Capaldi is still the Doctor, because it would be a very sad thing if I lost my chance to write for a grumpy, Scottish Doctor."
When asked what he would like to write about in a potential third episode, Gaiman added: "I haven't done an episode set on Earth yet, and I haven't created a new monster.

"Neighbours, everybody needs good neighbours."
In early 2015, Neighbours will celebrate its 30th anniversary. The Aussie soap has provided us with nearly 7,000 episodes of drama, laughs and Harold Bishop falling off a clifftop and returning five years later as a bloke called Ted.
With preparations already underway for the 30th celebrations and the possible return of Kylie Minogue - the show's most famous breakout star - being teased, we want to find out who else you would like to see back in Ramsay Street to celebrate the show's birthday.
Here are our suggestions on who they could bring back:
Annalise Hartman (Kimberley Davies) - Alex Fletcher, Deputy Editor
Pretty much every teenage boy in the '90s had a major crush on Ramsay Street's Annalise Hartman. Played by Kimberley Davies, she was a man magnet in Erinsborough, working her way through relationships with Lou(!), Sam Kratz, Mark Gottlieb and Stonefish. She...

In case you haven't heard, The Fault in Our Stars is kind of a sad film. The reaction across the pond (where the film has been out for a couple of weeks) has essentially been one long, drawn out ugly-cry, to the point where Slate have even released a handy guide to keeping your eye make-up intact.
Even the movie's stars Ansel Elgort, Nat Wolff and Laura Dern aren't immune, as they admitted in our video interview. We also asked them what other films have made them cry, which sparked a discussion back in the office about the most effective tearjerkers of all time.
Below, Digital Spy staffers reveal the films that are guaranteed to leave them a weeping mess.

When you think of Disney films, you usually think of the amazing songs, lovable heroes and heartwarming romantic tales.
But no Disney classic would be complete without an incredible villain to scare the bejeezus out of your inner 5-year-old.
In tribute to the release of Disney's Maleficent, we've picked out our favourite Disney villains of all time.
Lotso from Toy Story 3 (Alex Fletcher, Deputy Editor)
He may have been pink and smelled like strawberries, but there was nothing even slightly cuddly about Lotso. The villains in the previous Toy Story movies were pretty nasty - Sid, Al McWhiggin, Stinky Pete - but Lotso wins the prize for being the most dastardly of the lot. And don't even get us started on his scary baby sidekick!
His worst crime? Even after he is saved by our gang of plastic heroes, who are willing to forget his Sunnyside misdemeanours, he still turns on them again.

ITV launched its latest attempt in the breakfast TV war earlier today (April 28), with Good Morning Britain landing on our screens.
Susanna Reid, Ben Shephard, Sean Fletcher and Charlotte Hawkins co-hosted the brand new format, following Daybreak's end on Friday. But how well did they fare?
Most of the early reviews appear to be largely positive, with most people commenting on its similarity with Us morning show Good Morning America. Digital Spy has compiled a round-up of reviews and reactions from around the web below:

"The new 'serious news' format for Good Morning Britain feels like it's having to battle with ITV's natural lean towards fluff. The presentation of 'One Direction talking loves and relationships' as breaking news undermines a lot of the hard work they're putting in elsewhere. The news that Jk Rowling's upcoming Harry Potter spinoff will be turned into a new movie series came as no great surprise - spinoffs are all the rage in Hollywood right now, although many of the big-hitters are still theoretical.
Disney's new Star Wars series and Sony's Spider-Man are among the franchises with potential standalone movies in the offing, while over on the small screen The Vampire Diaries has spawned a successful spinoff in The Originals, and its CW bedfellow Supernatural is hoping to follow suit.
So what other current properties and characters are crying out for a spin-off? The Digital Spy staff have round up a few ideas across movies and TV below...
1) The Hunger Games: Haymitch - Emma Dibdin, Features Editor
One of the great strengths of Suzanne Collins' Hunger Games books – and by extension their big-screen adaptations – is the efficiency with which they flesh out supporting characters.

It's game show heaven on television right now. Not only do we have all sorts of new formats making their way to screen, but some old favourites are getting a second lease of life, too - from Fifteen to One (airing daily on Channel 4) to the second series of the revived Catchphrase (Sundays on ITV.) But it got us thinking - what other game shows would we like to see return to our living rooms?
Well, we asked that very question to Fifteen to One's Sandi Toksvig and Catchphrase's Stephen Mulhern - and then had a bit of office debate about our own favourites...
You Bet! - Stephen Mulhern (Host, Catchphrase)
"This is an easy question: You Bet! It was one of my favourite TV shows and Matthew Kelly was one of my favourite presenters. I love it.
"I can give you some great examples that still amaze me to this day.

The Muppets make their triumphant big screen return this week in Muppets Most Wanted, a continental caper that sees Ricky Gervais's villainous Dominic Badguy (it's pronounced Bad-gee!) and Kermit's evil doppelgänger Constantine use the gang as cover for a series of elaborate heists.

Statler and Waldorf - Catriona Wightman, Entertainment Editor
Inside, we're all grumpy old men - which is why Statler and Waldorf are the best thing about the Muppets. Their balcony-based banter never fails to amuse, even when their jokes are pretty much terrible ("They aren't half bad", "Nope, they're all bad").

Hot on the heels of some Stateside controversy and his second acting Golden Globe, Leonardo DiCaprio brings latest film The Wolf of Wall Street to the UK this Friday.
Wolf marks DiCaprio's fifth collaboration with legendary director Martin Scorsese, and together the duo have produced such modern classics as Gangs of New York, The Departed and Shutter Island. My favourite X Factor moment has to be 'Gummogate', a kerfuffle that saw Simon Cowell and Louis Walsh quarrelling over American independent cinema. Jamie Archer's rendition of 'Crying' during 2009's Movie Week (c'mon, Simon, have you *really* seen that film?) irked Louis so much he seemed to question the very existence of Harmony Korine's cult oddity. This all leads to the question... has Louis seen Spring Breakers?...

Not since the days of Jedward, Olly Murs and Rikki Loney (?!) has X Factor treated us to a Big Band Week. It's a chance for the acts to show off their most powerful vocal performances and knock out some good old fashioned Rat Pack classics. Or at least that's the plan anyway.
Can Sam Callahan finally win over Gary Barlow? How old is Nicholas McDonald? (16!!) And will Nicole Scherzinger be as 'excited' as she was on last week's Live Show? These are all questions we hope will be answered this evening.
Join us from 8pm when it all kicks off again on ITV.
21:32See you tomorrow at 8pm. Celine Dion and Robbie Williams are the special guests. Thanks for all the comments, as always. We love them all. Good and bad.
21:30That's all for tonight folks. There's no Flash Vote tonight. You'll have to wait 24 hours to find...

Halloween is traditionally a time for vampires, witches, werewolves and other such traditional figures from the horror genre. But here at Digital Spy, our most chilling childhood memories aren't associated with blood-sucking or witchcraft - they all come from the terrifying world of children's television.
Check out Digital Spy's full list of haunting kids' TV confessions below:
Simon Reynolds, Movies Editor - Orville
I remember being petrified of Orville the Duck, and years on I'm still struggling to comprehend exactly why I found him so scary. Is it the disconcerting nappy with giant safety pin? The high-pitched voice? Or possibly the fact that he's green for no apparent reason? I'm pretty sure that some form of Chucky-like horror movie evil is lurking behind those glazed, soulless black eyes.

Songs written for film's fictional pop stars typically miss the mark, but Schlesinger has shown it's possible to hit the right note
• More from the Why I Love ... series
You couldn't make Miley Cyrus up; Madonna, Britney and Divine did it for you. Pop music parodies itself all the time, but film finds it tricky. On the surface, film's fictional pop stars are in key with their real-world counterparts: they're shallow and self-centred, often a bit dim, and always image conscious. It's when it comes to the songs that the fiction falls flat. I can't buy Matt Damon as a sneering punk bro in Eurotrip (2004). It's not because of the fake piercings, or his horrible lip-synching, but because the song was written for the film and sounds like it. It gets skate-punk nearly right, so we nearly believe the performance. Nearly enjoy it, too.
Not many songwriters can write a...

At the weekend, The X Factor returned for the start of its tenth anniversary run with a super-sized double-header.
Our own Alex Fletcher described the return as "a hit-and-miss affair.
He welcomed the return of both the intimate audition room and the "refreshingly honest and candid" Sharon Osbourne but was left sighing by the "predictable" backstories and "extra helping of eggyness" with the two-day format.
But what did the rest of the critical landscape make of it? Below, Digital Spy rounds up the reviews over the weekend of The X Factor's 2013 return.
Michael Hogan - The Daily Telegraph
"You wait ages for an episode of The X Factor and two come along at once... We didn't need the schmaltzy soundtrack or cutesy kids in 'Mummy's Got The X Factor' T-shirts to tug our heartstrings. This was stirring enough already."
Emma Daly- Radio Times
"What was clear was that the new format (or rather,...

DS deputy editor Alex Fletcher and TV reporter - and Who fanatic - Morgan Jeffery talk the Thick of It star's unveiling as the 12th Doctor following last night's (August 4) big reveal.
The pair also discuss whether Capaldi's appointment means we should expect a "darker, edgier" Doctor, consider how the older 12th Time Lord might interact with companion Clara (Jenna Coleman), and even speculate on what the new man in the Tardis might wear...

Before the week is out we will know the identity of the 12th Doctor. Man, woman, black, ginger, disabled, cat, dog... we couldn't care less anymore, we just want to know who it is. The tension is killing us.
In an attempt to try to keep us busy until the big reveal on Sunday night (August 4), Digital Spy has been doing some fantasy Doctor Who casting.
Keep reading to find out who we would like to see taking over from Matt Smith in the Tardis.
Jamie Dornan - Alex Fletcher, Deputy Editor
I always prefer Doctor Who when it has a darker and more sinister tone, so ideally I'd like the BBC to pick someone who is more Eccleston than Tennant in style. If I was truly in fantasy land, I'd go for Andrew Lincoln, but he's currently far too busy kicking zombie ass on The Walking Dead.
So if I can't have Lincoln,...
