Danish director Per Fly's new film Hammarskjöld - Fight for Peace is getting rave reviews from around the world. At the International Film Festival Rotterdam it scored a terrific audience rating of 4.6 out of 5, with the biopic landing firmly in that festival's top 10. The film gives an interpretation of the last months of Dag Hammarskjöld's term of service as the Secretary General of the United Nations, in 1961, in which he strongly pushed for the independence of African countries. Opposed and sabotaged by several colonial superpowers, Hammarskjöld died in a very suspicious plane accident while trying to establish peace in Congo. Our Martin Kudlac gave a very positive review of the film (you can read that here). It wasn't just the film...

Dag Hammarskjöld, the second Secretary-General of the United Nations and recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize, died in 1961. But questions surrounding his tragic passing in a plane crash, and his sexuality, refuse to die down.
“We know who he is, but we don’t know that much about him,” says director Per Fly, now bringing “Hammarskjöld – Fight for Peace” to the International Film Festival Rotterdam. His journals “Markings,” published posthumously, provided a way in.
“There he was, this powerful man, and yet his writings deal with loneliness and sacrifice. There was a fragile poet inside of a politician.”
With Beta Cinema on board, the film was produced by Patrick Ryborn for Unlimited Stories. Variety premieres the trailer here.
According to Fly, Hammarskjöld was also a man who couldn’t afford to love.

Directed by Per Fly, “Borgen – Power & Glory” brings back Birgitte Nyborg (Sidse Babett Knudsen) who has just been appointed Minister for Foreign Affairs when a drilling company suddenly discovers oil in Greenland. The event sparks an international struggle for power in the Arctic.
“The series deals with some of the biggest political issues of our time, as well the relevance of the Danish Realm in the modern world, the superpowers’ battle for control of the Arctic – and not least, the climate crisis,” said Netflix, which described “Power & Glory” as “a stand-alone continuation of the previous seasons of ‘Borgen.'”

Backstabbing for Beginners is ostensibly a thriller about the corruption and intrigue surrounding the Saddam Hussein-era "Oil for Food" program sponsored by the United Nations. But the most thrilling aspect of director Per Fly's film is watching the interactions between co-stars Theo James and Ben Kingsley. Even as James sucks all the energy out of the room with his inert performance, Kingsley creates oxygen with his dynamic, wildly entertaining turn. Hearing the veteran performer find endlessly different ways to spew F-bombs makes you wonder why he's never been in a Quentin Tarantino movie.

"It sickens me to have to stand there and listen to your lies." A24 has debuted the first official trailer for a true story political drama titled Backstabbing for Beginners, from Danish director Per Fly. The film is about a young, idealistic program coordinator at the United Nations, as played by Theo James (from the Divergent series), who stumbles upon a conspiracy involving Iraq's oil reserves. Ben Kingsley stars as his boss, and the cast includes Jacqueline Bisset, Christina Dupre, Rossif Sutherland, Belçim Bilgin, Rachel Wilson, and Brian Markinson. This looks like a very compelling political thriller about a kid just trying to do what's right. And, as A24 says in their email, it's a very "timely" film for us to watch these days. Following last summer’s restoration of Swedish auteur Jan Troell’s directorial debut Here is Your Life (1966), Criterion presents the director’s most notable accomplishment from his most prolific period, the one-two punch of The Emigrants (1971) and The New Land (1972). Though technically released as two distinct features, they are more of a conjoined saga detailing the travails of America’s Scandinavian ancestors. Richly attenuated, they’re adapted from the celebrated series of four novels by Vilhelm Moberg, Upon a Good Land, hailed as cornerstones of Swedish literature. Until now, these, along with most of Troell’s 1970s titles, (who is known best for his 2008 masterpiece, Everlasting Moments) have been largely unavailable, a pity considering the level of achievement and a handful of Academy Award nominations (including a Best Picture nod) between both features. It’s difficult to imagine a more authentic depiction of the early immigration experience, narratives which have...

Seann Williams Scott (aka Stifler from American Pie, aka Doug Glatt from Goon) is a cinephile. You might not’ve guessed that, considering his acting choices haven’t been, shall we say, high caliber. Nonetheless, he loves movies, so picking his top five choices is as difficult as picking your favorite food — depending on his mood, the order and selection changes. Recently, he revealed his favorite films with this stipulation, but even then, they seemed a bit out-of-the-ordinary for the Stifmeister. During a Reddit Ama on Wednesday, Scott was asked to name his top five favorite films. At the time, he said these were at the top of his head at the time of the question: 1. The Inheritance, directed by Per Fly 2. Talk to Her, directed by Pedro Almodóvar 3. Betty Blue, directed by Jean-Jacques Beineix 4. Open Hearts, Susanne Bier 5. Chopper, Andrew Dominik Who ...

Göteborg, Sweden – One of the year’s most anticipated films, Monica Z (also known as Waltz for Monica), made its Nordic premiere at Way Out West, a month before the theatrical release in cinemas across Sweden. From her simple life as a telephone operator in a small Swedish town, to becoming a national celebrity performing in jazz clubs in Stockholm and New York, the film chronicles the life of legendary Swedish jazz singer and actor, Monica Zetterlund. Monica played a major role in popularizing jazz in Scandinavia and beyond from the late 1950s. She was awarded a medal by the Swedish government for her contributions to the cultural life of Sweden.

The Norwegian International Film Festival (Niff) is to showcase the “diversity” of the region’s current output, according to programme director Håkon Skogrand.
The 41st Niff will run from Aug 15-22 in Haugesund, opening with the world premiere of Erik Skjoldbjærg’s oil rush thriller, Pionér (Pioneer) starring Aksel Henie.
The festival will close with Gunhild Westhagen Magnor’s Optimistene (The Optimists), a documentary about a volleyball club of ladies aged 66-98.
“There is currently an impressive diversity in Norwegian cinema,” declared programme director Håkon Skogrand
However, there has been an increasing emphasis on films from Norway and the Nordic countries in recent years and festival director Gunnar Johan Løvvik has decided to give each section equal status to address this.
The sections include the main selection, Cinemagi (for children), French Touch, New British Films, Nordic Focus and New Nordic Films.
In the international line-up Skogrand will present 23 films from 13 countries and wide-ranging environments – “from New York...
