Sequels and spin-offs and remakes, oh my! We examine the many extensions of Disney's classic, from direct-to-video movies to TV spin-offs
This Lion King article comes from Den of Geek UK.
The Lion King was an enormous hit for Disney back in 1994, and 25 years later, it seems likely it will imminently be an enormous hit again. But between Roger Allers and Rob Minkoff’s animated favorite and Jon Favreau’s “live-action” remake, the House of Mouse has not shied away from turning it into a franchise with various sequels and TV shows.
At the time the animated version was originally released, the studio was riding high on the critical and financial success of its 1990s renaissance, which started with The Little Mermaid and arguably peaked here. Having only created one sequel up to this point (1990’s The Rescuers Down Under), the studio’s feature division didn...

Some of gaming’s most prominent voice actors are currently deciding to go on strike over such issues as better pay and greater safety...
Most commonly heard but not seen, voice actors have long played a pivotal role in the games industry. It’s difficult to imagine Nathan Drake being quite the same with any voice other than Nolan North’s issuing from his mouth, for example, while David Hayter provided the distinctive tones of Metal Gear’s Solid Snake for well over a decade.
For the voice actors’ union, SAG-aftra, the profession has been overlooked by the industry for too long - particularly when it comes to things like profit shares, safety and other rights. In fact, the union is currently deciding whether to go on strike, with a recent update on SAG-aftra’s website laying out the proposals it wants to push forward. These include performance bonuses for...

From Men In Black to Free Willy and Jumanji, here's how these '90s movie properties ended up as Saturday morning cartoons.
As wise old Yogurt tells the heroes in Spaceballs, the money is really made in the merchandising of a movie, parodying the revolutionary drive for tie-in products and media that followed George Lucas' savvy handling of Star Wars. Yogurt's prophecy fulfilled itself when the film's writers Mel Brooks and Thomas Meehan oversaw a short-lived and underwhelming spin-off, Spaceballs: The Animated Series in 2008.
When the film was originally released in 1987, the writing was already on the wall and one way in which studios could exploit their properties under the banner of an expanded universe was through animated spinoffs aimed at youngsters, with a view to selling toys and cereal based on that property too.
This was especially common with movies released in the 1990s, even...

Cyber ninjas! Cyber samurai! Octo-ladies! Konami passed along a heaping helping of character and casting information for February's "Metal Gear Rising Revengeance" while somehow finding a way to obscure much of the plot for the game. But, like any post-"Solid" title in the "Metal Gear" franchise, it'll come down to one lone soldier against a bunch of augmented super killers.
Hit the jump to see renders for the major players in "Revengeance" as well as their detailed character descriptions.
Raiden (voice: Quinton Flynn)
A cyborg who wields a “high-frequency blade” capable of cutting down even the largest unmanned weapons. Born in Liberia, he lost his family in that country’s civil war before becoming a child soldier. After the war, he was rescued by a human rights group and taken to America. However, he found himself unable to adapt to peaceful society, and, after coming to the attention of...

Sometimes the best stories don't need to be made up, since history is littered with untold gems. Like, say that time the CIA thought it would be a good idea to test their new mind control drugs (Lsd) on unsuspecting "recruits." A new web series from the team at Strange Science, Operation Midnight Climax, tackles this questionable time in post-war Us history. This of course naturally allows for some rather vivid visual shots in the web series, and the stylized 50's sets and camera effects definitely take us along for the trip. The cast is stocked with veteran TV actors—Quinton Flynn plays CIA spook Jake Kowalski and Todd Cahoon stars as his former Army pal Reed Spencer. The pilot episode (above) takes us through the setup of one of the brothels and the recruiting of four "lovely lieutenants" : Millie (Meredith Salenger), June (Stephanie Lemelin), Ethel (Jessica Myerson) and...
