Ice cool princesses on melodic voyages of self-discovery, are undeniably delightful. Yet sometimes one wants something a little more ferocious from a trip to the movies. With its roll call of eccentric characters and sweeping desert scapes, Khumba: A Zebra’s Tale provides an earnest and offbeat – if temporary - antidote to those sisters this Easter holiday. A wild and winsome tale of big courage!
Khumba (Jake T. Austin) is an outcast among his insular zebra herd. Born half-striped, raised as a veritable outsider and newly motherless, his instinct to offer a share of their dwindling water supplies to a stranger only elevate suspicions within the group. The superstitious elders of the herd – mulishly determined not to remember a time when things were different – keep the waterhole locked down by a wall of thorns and hoard the precious commodity.
Regardless, demand is outstripping supply and someone needs to act.

Moscow (Reuters) - Russia's Bolshoi Theater celebrated the 90th birthday of Cuban dancer Alicia Alonso with a gala performance this week of Russian classics performed by her pupils and countrymen.
The Havana-native, who turned 90 years-old last December, received a standing ovation at the packed theater on Tuesday night where she was honored alongside Russian dancers -- such as Vladimir Vasiliev and Azari Plisetsky -- who have worked with her over a career that has spanned more than six decades.
"I really feel like Alicia in Wonderland," Alonso gushed on stage after the performance.
In her youth, Alonso studied ballet with choreographers Michel Fokine, George Balanchine and Leonide Massine, and later brought their ballets to the Cuban National Ballet company, which she founded in 1948.
On her 17th visit to Russia since 1958, Alonso praised the country's dancers for innovating partnered ballets, with lifts and acrobatics for male dancers, which...

Are you a professional or collegiate dancer between the ages of 18 and 40? Or a male ballet dancer aged 12 to 16? If so, you may want to participate in one of two new research studies in dance medicine being conducted at the Harkness Center for Dance Injuries in New York City. A program of the Nyu Hospital for Joint Diseases, the Harkness Center provides an array of specialized health-care services for working dancers and dance students. The two studies will look at the effects of a pre-partnering strength-training class and the effects of fatigue on jumping ability. She Ain't Heavy, She's My Partner"There is no codified strength-training protocol for adolescent male dancers before they start partnering class, and as in all sports, without progressive overload training before the start of a season, there is a likelihood of injury," explains Leigh Heflin, education and administrative coordinator of the Harkness Center and co-conductor of the strength-training study.
