When it comes to predicting the Oscar winner for Best Film Editing, you can’t go wrong by looking for the movie with the most cuts. Past winners “The Bourne Ultimatum” (2008), “Mad Max: Fury Road” (2016) and “Ford v Ferrari” (2020) included high-octane action sequences with frenetic cutting. And a slew of other champs — including “Saving Private Ryan” in 1999, “Black Hawk Down” (2002), “The Hurt Locker” (2010), “Hacksaw Ridge” (2017) and “Dunkirk” (2018) — have been war pictures. (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2021 Oscar predictions for Best Film Editing.)
Oscar voters also embrace film editors who skillfully juggle multiple storylines, as was the case with “Traffic” (2001) and “Crash” (2006). And they like films that expertly inter-cut music with images, such as “Cabaret” (1973), “Chicago” (2003), “Whiplash” (2015), “Bohemian Rhapsody” (2019) and last year’s winner “Sound of Metal.” Special effects extravaganzas like “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” (2004) and “Gravity” (2014) won by deftly blurring the lines between the real and the fantastic.

The latest entry into the Marvel canon, Spider-Man: No Way Home, succeeds in regaining some of the traction for the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) that was lost by Eternals. Leave it to the ever-dependable web crawler to right the ship and guide the MCU back on course.
Spider-Man’s latest adventure begins moments after Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal) revealed Spidey’s true identity to the world at the end of Spider-Man: Far from Home (2019). This shatters Peter Parker’s world in more ways than simply making it impossible for him to be an effective hero; it continually puts his loved ones in peril. Seeking a redress of sorts, Peter approaches Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) and asks for his help. Strange goes about casting a spell to make people forget that Peter Parker and Spider-Man are one and the same. However, Peter inadvertently corrupts the spell when he questions whether “everyone” needs...

Sandwiched between the events depicted in Captain American: Civil War (2016) and Avengers: Infinity War (2018), the new Marvel film, Black Widow, follows Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson) as she attempts to clear some of the dark marks in her ledger after being drawn back into her life as a trained assassin. Ultimately, the film plays as a fine entry to the Marvel canon and proves that super heroines can hold their own every bit as well as their male counterparts.
The film begins with a prologue of sorts in 1995 when Natasha is a pre-teen living with her former faux family—father, mother, and sister—who are forced to flee their idyllic suburban life once their uncover mission is compromised. Years later, after serving time as an Avenger, Natasha is reunited with her sister (Florence Pugh), mother (Rachel Weisz), and father (David Harbour) as they reunite in an attempt to take down the...

Given the events of the most recent “Avengers” movies, it’s safe to assume that “Black Widow” is Scarlett Johansson’s final victory lap in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as she gets a long overdue opportunity to headline a stand-alone superhero movie.
Rather than deeply explore the character and soul of Natasha Romanoff, however, “Black Widow” treats her like a TV star who’s devoting an episode of her series to introducing new characters who might or might not break off into a spinoff of their own. The film does offer additional insight into the character’s tortured past, but the overwhelming effect is that of a baton being passed.
“Black Widow” excels most as Marvel’s attempt to make their own 007 movie. Like Christopher Nolan’s recent efforts “Tenet” and “Inception,” it doesn’t quite achieve that ineffable something that sets the best James Bond films apart, although each...

Peter Parker faces life after “Avengers: Endgame” in “Spider-Man: Far From Home,” and so does the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general, but by the end of this latest saga, both seem ready to face any future challenges.
In a year that’s only half-done, audience members would be forgiven for having superhero fatigue after “Captain Marvel,” “Shazam!” and “Avengers: Endgame.” (It’s almost welcome news that we aren’t getting the next McU movie until 2020.) But with a focus on character-based comedy, coming-of-age anxieties, and super-battles that exist in very specific geographical locations, returning writers Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers and director Jon Watts have carved out a space for Spider-Man that feels uniquely breezy and charming while still fitting the larger structure of the Marvel movies.
The film opens with a hilariously earnest piece of exposition — a high-school TV station’s “in memoriam” montage for Tony Stark and others...

Austin - One of the things that impresses me most about the team that throws the SXSW Film Festival in Austin every year is how adaptable they are. I've seen them roll with all sorts of things, and they seem to me to be open to all sorts of ideas in terms of programming. There was nothing originally scheduled for the Sunday night midnight slot at the Paramount, but when I woke up on Sunday morning, the festival had announced a very special treat for anyone who had a badge for the festival, and anticipation was running high because of which title it was. This coming weekend, I'll be attending the junket for "Furious 7," so I was already scheduled to see the film. But seeing it tonight at the Paramount Theater, completely packed with lunatic movie fans who were all crazy excited to be there was better than any junket screening possibly could be.
